This month we take a look at the classic jazz standard, All Of Me, and use some of the concepts we have been discussing in the past couple of episodes. In the etude I have prepared for you, we are thinking rhythm first and basing the melodic and harmonic language from a different point of view. If you have worked on the exercises from episodes 260 and 261, you will be well prepared to play this material and get something out of it. Enjoy the episode and etude! You probably guessed this would be the tune of the month, but here it is. This month we will be taking a look at the great Sonny Rollins composition and, as always, I've prepared an etude for you over the chord progression. In this etude, I really focused on using the syncopation style we spoke about in episode 257. I also went ahead and borrowed a phrasing idea used by Clifford Brown in episode 258 and based much of the etude on it. I hope you enjoy and have fun with this composition on this fantastic chord progression! ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This week we take a look at one of Miles Davis' original compositions, Nardis for our tune of the month episode. we will be attempting to use the concepts we talked about over the month involving diatonic playing and space. I'm not going to lie, I had a lot of trouble with this etude and don't think it's my best work. We talk about this difficulty and how you can get through something that doesn't come naturally to you. This month's tune comes from Cy Coleman and is one of the most interesting chord progressions I have come across. It actually manages to demonstrate all three modulations we have been talking about this month! Welcome to another Tune of the Month episode! This month we are finishing up our series on the playing of the legendary Charlie Parker by writing an etude over one of his most well known tunes. I strove to use the concepts from the previous three episodes this month in my writing and I think you will find a nice mix of the things we have talked about and explored. The challenge for this etude is to practice it enough to be able to be play at quite a fast tempo, as Bird would have. Good luck and have fun! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This week's episode brings our series in October to a close. Do you feel like you gained some valuable information on learning tunes in multiple keys?? I sure hope you did. We are going to finish up the series with an etude written over, It Could Happen To You. There is a catch, however. The etude is written in the key of concert F (which is a key you should know this tune in). Your challenge is to learn the melody in concert F before you even touch the etude. Good luck and have fun! This episode culminates our work on using blues phrasing in places we may not have thought of in the past. So far we have discussed using the blues on the ii-V progression, the iii-VI-ii-V progression, and we have looked at some amazing examples of legendary musicians using these techniques. Now it's time to put all of these things together in the form of an etude and see what we get. In this etude you will notice many techniques being used side-by-side in an effort to create a complete statement. Thanks for listening and enjoy the episode! This week, we finish up our series on the melodic minor scale by utilizing the tune that I think gives us the best opportunities to put our studies into action. This week is the culmination of our series on fourths and we celebrate it by playing a killer etude over the Miles Davis composition, Tune Up. We use this episode as a way to talk about the form, chord progression, and one tricky spot in the tune. Then we move into how I attempted to use fourths mixed with other material to, hopefully, make it sound a bit more natural in context. Enjoy the episode! This week wraps up our month of listener questions. We are taking a look at the famous Wayne Shorter composition, Footprints. This month, we are going to take a look at the amazing Jerome Kern standard, Yesterdays through the lens of the articulation principles we have been discussing in the past 3 episodes. We have a three chorus etude and our aim is to get a bit more adventurous as we move through the composition. One important thing to remember, is to keep the basic principles of swing in mind for the entire etude. Just because we are mixing things up a bit, doesn't mean we can ignore the basics. This week we are taking all of the concepts we learned about the bebop scale and applying them to one of my favorite jazz standards by Duke Ellington, In A Mellow Tone. Your job this month will be to find all of the instances of the bebop scale used in this etude and see how they are incorporated into the bigger picture. I'm a fan of the chord progression here because it largely follows the circle of fourths and relies heavily on the dominant chord (a great place for the bebop scale!). Enjoy the episode! We try to utilize some of the concepts that we have talked about over the last three episodes and put them in a real life situation with some context. This week brings an end to our series on melodic fragments (crying sound) and, like we always do, we are finishing this one off with a bang featuring an etude over our tune of the month. This month features Miles Davis' composition, Four. It seemed appropriate to feature this tune since there is, in fact, a melodic fragment that starts the melody. It also contains great changes to practice these fragments we have been discussing this month. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This culminates our series on reading with an etude based around the minor blues. We tried to bring together everything we talked about in the last 3 episodes and implement it, providing for a very tough exercise! If you really want to go the extra mile, we have also written a version of the same etude up a half step. Enjoy the episode and good luck! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Welcome to our last episode of 2019! This has been an absolutely awesome year and I want to thank all of our listeners and community for the show of support and all your hard work to become better musicians. Looking forward to 2020! This episode is the culmination of our series on using tensions in context. Will will take all of the information gathered over the month and see it in a real world situation over one of my favorite jazz standards, There Is No Greater Love. I have done the hard work for you in the first 8 bars, showing you exactly what structures I am using to realize these important tensions. The rest of the analysis is up to you. This week we culminate our work for the month by looking at one of my favorite jazz tunes, Last Night on the Back Porch. This tune is simple and requires us to understand some of the most basic and important chord movements that occur so frequently in jazz. I'm hoping that the work you've done so far this month will prepare you to finally put it all together and handle this tune nicely. I have prepared our usual etude for you with some if the concepts covered and hope you enjoy this month's episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This month's tune of the month and etude are a carry over from last week's episode where we talked about a phrase from the great Charlie Parker composition, Ornithology. In this episode, we are going to explore a very specific melodic device based on triplets and surrounding chord tones. We are using this particular set of changes because it puts us in many different keys and situations where we need to be flexible. This is a great facet of a complete musician, flexibility, and this week's episode will put us through our paces. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This month we take a look at yet another Monk tune and we focus our efforts on phrasing. Phrasing is the biggest and most important factor when it comes to playing a solo that makes sense and is memorable. Our goal with this month's episode is to get you to think about phrasing over the chord changes. We have a tendency to play these little self-contained phrases that stop right before the chord moves on. When we break this habit, so many of our limitations disappear. Enjoy this episode and remember to grab the PDF exercises and etudes! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This month we cover one of my favorite Thelonious Monk tunes, Well You Needn't. This tune is unique in many ways. It uses almost exclusively half-step motion in the chord changes which provides us a unique challenge when improvising. In this episode we talk about using motivic development yet again to gain some facility and knowledge of the chord changes. This is a great way to approach this tune when you're starting out and develop fluency before trying more complicated devices. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the PDF! We are back with another edition of our tune of the month series! This month's episode is an extension of things we have been working on in the past couple of episodes. We are doubling down on double time (see what I did there). This episode is going to teach you how to apply the concepts we learned about in episodes 165 and 166. Remember, the key to anything you're practicing comes down to application. This episode features that sentiment in action. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? This month we take a look at the great jazz standard, Solar. We are trying something different this time. We are placing a pretty serious restriction on ourselves over this tune, playing in only one octave! This may be one of the most frustrating things you have ever done but it really makes you think about the material you are playing at all times. It's so easy to fall back on what we know, and that's exactly what we confront in this episode. When confining yourself to a single octave you really have to think about where you are going and not fall back on any muscle memory or lines that you play without purpose. Enjoy the episode and the etude! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Head over to our Patreon page and when you donate $3 or more a month you get this PDF and every other. This is one of my favorite jazz standards of all time. This tune can be very intimidating due to the bridge. The topic of today's show is how to approach a tune that has a tricky section causing you to avoid it. By using a simple trick that allows you to think through difficult changes slowly, we can start to sort some of these things out in our playing. Thinking fast is essential when playing this music, but thinking slowly is also an essential part of practicing. Learning to balance the two will benefit your playing tremendously. Enjoy the episode! Confirmation is one of those tunes that is very scary to look at. There's a good reason for this as Confirmation is usually played at extremely fast tempos and has a ton of changes! But don't fret, we are here to simplify some of the most difficult parts and give you a way to approach them with sequences. Sequential playing is an important aspect of playing bebop and tunes like Confirmation. It does a couple of important things: Gives you good sounding material that helps you learn the texture of the changes and helps you to be less intimidated by very difficult harmony. A win-win all around. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the etude I have written for you by clicking the link below! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Welcome back to another tune of the month episode! This month features one of my all time favorite tunes by Joe Henderson. Recordame is a tune with multiple personalities and in this episode, we focus on the first section and a very specific sound. We are all about harmonic minor and using this sound over a minor seventh chord. First we explore the scale and it's make-up. Then, we give a couple of short phrases to get you into the sound. Ending the episode with another etude designed for you to see the new sound in action and give you some useful material to draw from in your own learning. This month's tune of the month episode is a tune I have been playing and thinking a lot about lately. There Will Never Be Another You is a great jazz standard with many of the chord movements that we talk about on this show. The circle of fourths is very present in this particular composition and gives us a chance to work on many concepts relating to tension and release. This is exactly what we are doing this week when we look at a #9 to b9 resolution model. These two notes sound fantastic in tandem with one another and when they resolve is one of the most effective sounds in jazz. In this episode we feature an exercise utilizing this line in multiple keys and then we have written an etude for you featuring this sound in many different situations. Enjoy! We are starting a new series here at the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson. It's called Tune of the Month! Every month we will be taking a look at an important jazz standard and coming up with a great exercise to get you improvising fluently over it. For our first month, we take a look at the classic standard, All The Things You Are. We talk about how the chord structure revolves around the circle of 4ths and how we can use this to our advantage with an exercise built off of chord tones and extensions. I also throw in a cool etude for Patreon subscribers just for the fun of it! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??
