On episode 113 of the Planet LP podcast, host Ted Asregadoo welcomes guest John Maschino to dive deep into the world of protest songs. While many immediately think of the 1960s, this episode explores how rebellious anthems have evolved and continue to be a powerful force in music. From the satirical observations of Devo's "Beautiful World" to the deeply personal liberation in Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club," and the unflinching social commentary of Childish Gambino's "This is America" and Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," this episode covers a wide range of musical rebellion. Ted and John also discuss examples of religious rebellion, such as The Lovestrange's "Hey Now, People," along with economic injustice in Oliver Anthony's "Rich Men North of Richmond," the fight for marriage equality in The Gossip's "Standing in the Way of Control," and the broader landscape of protest in the music of Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and more. Jump right into a deep discussion on the intersection of music, change, and rebellion. Planet LP's sponsor is Steve Fox's Old School. The first place to go to stream R&B dance hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be re-releasing a few of my favorite past conversations on Tuesdays. This one was a lifelong dream for me: getting to talk to DEVO's Gerald V. Casale about their body of work--a band whose musical and visual identity showed teenage me that it was o.k. to be different, weird, and skeptical. Jerry does not suffer fools gladly, so I was quite nervous going into the interview, but once he realized I wasn't going ask about the flower pot hats, we both relaxed and took a serious deep dive into how he and DEVO altered the world forever, as well as how lonely that could be for them. Episode 35 originally aired on May 9th, 2024.The original podcast show notes:This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo's Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo's film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo's aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde' influenced the 'Beautiful World' video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter's dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor's ‘Mongoloid' short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It's Devo' tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music' and having your own action figure made of you.So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!JERRY CASALE (videos, action figures, music, art):https://www.geraldvcasale.com/DEVO:https://www.clubdevo.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Her creations for runway fashion shows, gala events and the White House evoke meadows, forests and fields. Fifteen years after her disruptive arrival on the floral scene, she has published a book documenting her work. Martha and Emily talk about their floral obsessions and creating unforgettable work in the most ephemeral of arts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight, we'll read a Snoozecast original, “Spandex Jackets (One for Everyone).” Listeners who are fans of Steely Dan may be aware that the title is a reference to Donald Fagen's 1982 track “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)”. The story itself draws inspiration from the song which paints a retro-futuristic dream of undersea rails, solar-powered cities and the promise of a gloriously bright tomorrow. The acronym in the song title I.G.Y. references the “International Geophysical Year” a real life global scientific project that ran from July 1, 1957 to December 31st 1958. It brought together scientists from 67 nations to collaborate on studying Earth's geophysical properties, including its atmosphere, oceans, and polar regions. IGY marked significant advancements in space research, such as the launch of the first artificial satellites (Sputnik by the Soviet Union and Explorer by the United States). Its spirit of international cooperation laid the groundwork for many subsequent collaborative scientific endeavors. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When you don't use a muscle or a skill, it's a well-known fact that atrophy inevitably sets in. To improve oneself, an active effort must be made to ensure progress. But what happens with the advent of AI, designed to make things easier? What implications will this have on the cognitive processes that require continuous refinement? In this thought-provoking episode of The Great Indoors, host Matthew Roberts speaks with renowned author and philosopher, Charles Eisenstein, about the evolving role of technology and its impact on aspects of our lives that were once firmly rooted in the tangible. They delve into the core concepts of Eisenstein's work, including Sacred Economics, and discuss the far-reaching implications of replacing the real with the digital. Through engaging anecdotes and philosophical reflections, Charles challenges us to reconnect with the material world, nurture authentic relationships, and consider why oral storytelling may become the future's most reliable tool for building trust. With increasing domination from ones and zeros, it's time to explore the possibilities of a more beautiful and connected world.

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we have Jerry Casale on the show, a founding member of the legendary band DEVO. Devo were one of the foundations of the post-punk/new wave era with songs like "Uncontrollable Urge," “Girl U Want,” “Beautiful World,” and their biggest hit and early MTV staple, 1980's “Whip It.” The formation of the band, however, was born from the tragic events of the shootings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, which Gerald witnessed first hand. Here, he tells us about that day and how that led to the formation of one of the biggest bands of the 80s.  Musical credits: "Dany PKL" by Blue Dot Sessions More about Gerald and his art and records can be found here. When musician ARTHUR RUSSELL died in 1992, at age 40, of complications related to HIV-AIDS, he was an obscure figure — though a legend in the 70s and 80s underground music scenes at downtown New York clubs such as The Loft and Paradise Garage.  RICHARD KING, author of 'Travels Over Feeling'(Faber) a poignant and evocative visual chronology of Arthur's life and times, came to the the Bureau to tell us about him and why he matters. Despite his prodigious output, his inability to finish songs, and the genre-busting uniqueness of much of his music, meant that he released only two albums under his own name in his lifetime. But in the decades since his death, a series of posthumous releases have generated a deep love and admiration in many who have been lucky to come across his music.   We also get into indie record shop culture, music sobbery, the underground New York club scene of  the mid seventies and ask the question: 'How do you know when, a song, a book or a piece of art is finished?' Thanks to Dan Papps at Faber, to Steve Knutson of Audika Records and Cat Corrigan of Beggars Banquet who have posthumously released much of Arthur's unpublished work, for permission to include his music.
