Floral designer Emily Thompson has a very different vocabulary from many florists: she creates thickets, heaps, vapors, gusts and gales, using birds, beasts, branches, trees and flora. Her creations for runway fashion shows, gala events and the White House evoke meadows, forests and fields. Fifteen years after her disruptive arrival on the floral scene, she has published a book documenting her work. Martha and Emily talk about their floral obsessions and creating unforgettable work in the most ephemeral of arts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight, we'll read a Snoozecast original, “Spandex Jackets (One for Everyone).” Listeners who are fans of Steely Dan may be aware that the title is a reference to Donald Fagen's 1982 track “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)”. The story itself draws inspiration from the song which paints a retro-futuristic dream of undersea rails, solar-powered cities and the promise of a gloriously bright tomorrow. The acronym in the song title I.G.Y. references the “International Geophysical Year” a real life global scientific project that ran from July 1, 1957 to December 31st 1958. It brought together scientists from 67 nations to collaborate on studying Earth's geophysical properties, including its atmosphere, oceans, and polar regions. IGY marked significant advancements in space research, such as the launch of the first artificial satellites (Sputnik by the Soviet Union and Explorer by the United States). Its spirit of international cooperation laid the groundwork for many subsequent collaborative scientific endeavors. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When you don't use a muscle or a skill, it's a well-known fact that atrophy inevitably sets in. To improve oneself, an active effort must be made to ensure progress. But what happens with the advent of AI, designed to make things easier? What implications will this have on the cognitive processes that require continuous refinement? In this thought-provoking episode of The Great Indoors, host Matthew Roberts speaks with renowned author and philosopher, Charles Eisenstein, about the evolving role of technology and its impact on aspects of our lives that were once firmly rooted in the tangible. They delve into the core concepts of Eisenstein's work, including Sacred Economics, and discuss the far-reaching implications of replacing the real with the digital. Through engaging anecdotes and philosophical reflections, Charles challenges us to reconnect with the material world, nurture authentic relationships, and consider why oral storytelling may become the future's most reliable tool for building trust. With increasing domination from ones and zeros, it's time to explore the possibilities of a more beautiful and connected world.

As a dyslexic child, Akbar explored his curiosities about the world through visual wonders, and by having literature read aloud to him. As an adult, his love of art evolved as he became the patron of a multicultural group of calligraphers, painters, poets and more. A now infamous Mughal artistic style developed from his court, with iconic paintings full of bright colours and meticulous details. How did Akbar shape this style? And how was his art and architecture impacted by the religious tolerance he promoted? Listen as William and Anita explore the art and architecture that emerged from Akbar's court. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we have Jerry Casale on the show, a founding member of the legendary band DEVO. Devo were one of the foundations of the post-punk/new wave era with songs like "Uncontrollable Urge," “Girl U Want,” “Beautiful World,” and their biggest hit and early MTV staple, 1980's “Whip It.” The formation of the band, however, was born from the tragic events of the shootings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, which Gerald witnessed first hand. Here, he tells us about that day and how that led to the formation of one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Musical credits: "Dany PKL" by Blue Dot Sessions More about Gerald and his art and records can be found here. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! You can find out more about my work and the 80s and 90s books at my website here. When musician ARTHUR RUSSELL died in 1992, at age 40, of complications related to HIV-AIDS, he was an obscure figure — though a legend in the 70s and 80s underground music scenes at downtown New York clubs such as The Loft and Paradise Garage. RICHARD KING, author of 'Travels Over Feeling'(Faber) a poignant and evocative visual chronology of Arthur's life and times, came to the the Bureau to tell us about him and why he matters. Despite his prodigious output, his inability to finish songs, and the genre-busting uniqueness of much of his music, meant that he released only two albums under his own name in his lifetime. But in the decades since his death, a series of posthumous releases have generated a deep love and admiration in many who have been lucky to come across his music. We also get into indie record shop culture, music sobbery, the underground New York club scene of the mid seventies and ask the question: 'How do you know when, a song, a book or a piece of art is finished?' Thanks to Dan Papps at Faber, to Steve Knutson of Audika Records and Cat Corrigan of Beggars Banquet who have posthumously released much of Arthur's unpublished work, for permission to include his music. One of my favorite aspects of hosting this podcast is the opportunity to meet new people & also to feature some of my closest & dearest friends in the world as I truly believe that human connection is the most important medicine in very short supply in the world right now & my hope is that by featuring these individuals that have supported me in my life, that you too can connect with them, allow them to bring more magic into your life & to make yourself RICH beyond all measure in the #1 medicine necessary for a beautiful experience while here on earth. Todays guest on the show is a woman who I have known for the last 8 years or so & who met me at a time where I had a lot of goals & a vision, but felt powerless to actually manifest the life I was envisioning & she has been an immense source of inspiration for me in building my own business, taking the initiative to drop the victim mentality & become the victor of my life & has been someone I can always rely on to be my friend & soul sister in this lifetime. In today's episode, I catch up with her & she shares some VERY powerful recent psychedelic experiences she's gone through, including one with her Mom that truly touched me as being able to connect with these medicines with our families is something not many of us have the opportunity to do, yet so many of us yearn to be able to experience.Breathe With Cannabis August 15thhttps://christopheraugust.mykajabi.com/offers/xpNQiQmU/checkoutShow Notes:(00:42) Leah's Bio.(03:35) Recent psychedelic experiences.(08:05) Challenges faced, and experiencing plant medicines with a parent.(15:11) Laughter is like crying!(30:11) The feminine perspective.(45:59) The mindset shift.(59:31) Hermetics. The New Yorker: The Writer's Voice - New Fiction from The New Yorker
Sally Rooney reads her story “Opening Theory,” from the July 8 & 15, 2024, issue of the magazine. Rooney is the author of three novels, “Conversations with Friends,” “Normal People,” and “Beautiful World, Where Are You.” A new novel, “Intermezzo,” from which this story was adapted, will be published in September.
It's a beautiful world, If you look past the darkness and into the light.
主播:Anne(中国)+ 梅莉(法国)歌曲:Beautiful World今天,我们聊一部刚刚大结局的剧(a Chinese TV drama)——《庆余年2》(Joy of Life Season 2)。 Celebrating the Remaining Life,“remaining life”sounds a bit sad especially in English。 • vibe /vaɪb/ n. 氛围There's a collaboration with Disney Since its release(上映), "Joy of Life 2" has become the most popular drama from the China mainland ever on Disney+(《庆余年2》成为了Disney+平台上有史以来最受欢迎的国产电视剧).That's a huge success!02《庆余年》简介庆余年是 adapted from a popular online novel(改编自一部网络小说). It's really a combination of several popular genres(是多种流行体裁的融合),剧中包括time travel(时空穿越),武侠还有romantic comedy(浪漫喜剧)。• genre /ˈʒɑ:nrə/ n. 除了男主角的名字,这部剧里还有一些punny names(有双关含义的名字),一些名字are just plain funny(只是为了好玩),而另一些have connections to real historical figures(是与历史上真实人物相关的)。• figure n.(重要的)人物比如,男主角的侍卫(bodyguard)名叫滕梓荆,他的名字很大可能性是a direct reference to(直接引用)滕子京(a friend of the famous Chinese writer大文豪范仲淹)。 很多人都猜测,this is hinting at the friendship between these two characters in the drama,剧里这么取名暗示了两个人物之间的友谊。Using names with puns and historical references(使用带有双关含义和历史典故的名字)其实是一种 writing technique(写作技巧)that's used in a lot of Chinese literature(在很多中国文学里都会出现)。• technique /tekˈni:k/ n.(尤指体育或艺术方面的)技巧第一季电视剧剧情(plot of the drama)里,under the guidance of mysterious mentors(在神秘高人的点拨下),男主精进武艺(learns martial arts),学习药性药理(makes discoveries about medicines),然后为了解开(to unravel)自己的身世之谜(the mystery of his identity),决定前往京城寻找答案(decides to go to the capital to find his answers)。• unravel /ʌnˈræv(ə)l/ v.弄清第二季里男主的journey(经历)主要是如何跟他的alliance(同盟)一起seeks the truth以及如何fights against(对抗)deeper conspiracies(更深的阴谋)。为了不spoil the show(剧透),if you're curious, you could watch the show for yourself!• alliance /əˈlaɪəns/ n. “There is no absolute fairness in this world. Just like some people are born with great wealth, some are penniless, some are talented and quick-thinking, and some are as wise as fools.”范闲多次谈到fairness(公平)一词,而这个角色也经常是 standing against the unfairness of the world(与世间的不公作斗争),有a sense of justice(一股正义感)。• justice /ˈdʒʌstɪs/ n. “People will change. No one in this world should be nice to you by nature.” “He is a human being, not a pawn.”Pawn就是象棋里的兵和卒,在英文里也代表被操纵的或者可以被牺牲的人。• pawn /pɑ:n/ n. • filler n. No one is a plain bad or good character. • villain /ˈvɪlən/ n.(小说、戏剧等中的)主要反面人物#Comment 4这位观众对《庆余年2》有点失望,他misses the magic of the first season(怀念第一季带来的吸引力)。

EP 12: The Spin-Offs Riker Lynch (Glee, Dancing With The Stars, American Song Contest) John D. Carrion, Executive Director of The NYC Gay Men's Chorus On this episode, we're talking about the numerous times that the European Broadcasting Union (or EBU) has tried to spin-off the Eurovision concept. We start by taking about the European spin-offs that were started under the EBU's network of national broadcasters, including Eurovision Young Musicians, Eurovision Young Dancers, and Junior Eurovision. We then talk about the complications of exporting the Eurovision brand under a commercial model abroad, focusing in on the American Song Contest-- hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg. We then interview American Song Contest runner-up Riker Lynch as he pulls back the curtain on the process of bringing the Eurovision concept to American audiences. Finally, Executive Director of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus and Eurovision fan John D. Carrion stops by to play a game about the American Song Contest called Eurovision: Lost In Translation. John uses his knowledge of Eurovision to evaluate ASC numbers and analyze what it is about the Eurovision format that's so difficult to export. Charles Eisenstein shares his vision for a more beautiful world that our hearts know is possible. He explains why all the crises we experience today, are rooted in the single origin of separation, and how by healing this wound within ourselves, we can heal the world. Charles dives deep on the importance of energetic intention within any revolution for change, the limitations of labeling things as 'good' and 'bad', and how to alchemize anger into a collective awakening. In this era of change, everyone plays a role. And each person's role is just as valuable, no matter how big or small it may seem. Blondes - "Beautiful World" from the 2023 EP In Separation from Lab Records. For today's Song of the Day, Nottingham-based quartet Blondes share an early listen to their forthcoming EP, titled In Separation, with the dreamy pop track "Beautiful World." "'Beautiful World' feels like our first proper pop song," shares guitarist Alex Davison. "It's my favourite that we've written so far. It's about our relationship with our environment and each other. We wrote it to speak not just for ourselves but to anyone that finds themselves looking around at our world and wondering just how we've become so disconnected from one another and the planet. We hope you like it.” In Separation will be released July 14th via C3 Records / LAB Records. "In Separation is a collection of songs written and recorded over the past two years," they say via a press release. "It's a project that explores the ways in which we become disconnected from one another, taking you on an emotional journey through separation to reconciliation. It speaks to the ways we live with, and without, each other." Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Original Airdate: December 19, 2018What will come to define the human race for future generations? Philosopher, teacher and writer Charles Eisenstein provides insight into what could await us in the future, and discusses how cynicism, self-delusion and separation help to create our troubled world. In his book The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible, Charles explains why he believes the one way to resolve conflict is when opponents try to understand one another on a human level, become less judgmental and then begin to find common ground. Charles says, "It's basically anything that says, ‘Yeah, we're connected. Your well-being will bring my well-being. More for you is more for me. We're not really separate.'" Charles also talks about the themes of civilization, human cultural evolution and being aware of one's own existence.
