Mary Grimm leads listeners through the tunnels, dreams, purgatories, and ghost towns that appear in her new story collection, Transubstantiation. Along the way, she discusses her literary influences and heroes, experimental writing, story beginnings and endings, publishing short fiction in The New Yorker and beyond, the line between autobiographical fiction and creative nonfiction, setting fictional stories in real places, post-mortem photography, why she loves teaching writing, what makes a good title story in a collection, why she wrote a story in response to the “it was all a dream” trope, and more. Mary Grimm's previous books include the novel Left to Themselves and the story collection Stealing Time. Her stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Antioch Review, and the Mississippi Review, as well as in a number of journals that publish flash fiction, including Helen, The Citron Review, and Tiferet. Currently, she is working on a series of climate change novellas set in past and future Cleveland. Page Count is produced by Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library. We often think we are time-poor because we can be bad at time management or disorganised at times. Our guest speaker on this podcast episode, Maria Kilcommins, speaks with us about why this may not be the case and how oftentimes, it is technology that is at the root cause of our time deficits. We discuss the value of time and the deeply spiritual and religious sense it holds. How can we value our time better? Maria shares with us how a serious cancer diagnosis 11 years ago reminded her of the sobering fact that time is not limitless. Maria talks about how if we want to live an intentional life, we need to be aware of what is strengthening and competing with our relationships. We discuss how technology can help but can also hinder these relationships. In addition, Maria explores the core values or cardinal virtues of the will and the heart which can ensure our time choices align with what we value most.------------Hearts + Minds Official website - hearts-minds.ieIG - @heartsandmindsireFB - Hearts+Minds | FacebookEmail: hello@hearts-minds.ieHearts+Minds events in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Galway and Navan

Torah 283: Rabeinu explains why it is that sometimes there are two Tzadikim who share the same shoresh/root and yet they still have strife between them. The reason for this is one is the aspect of tov/good, and the other is the aspect of chesed/lovingkindess. Good is concealed within, but lovingkindness is spread outward. This is the the essential reason for the strife between King David and Shaul!Torah 284: One time a person came to Rabeinu complaining that he had no time to engage in Torah because of business. Rabeinu told him that a person must “steal” time from work to study. Rabeinu explains the Gemara in Shabbat and teaches us what it really means!Torah 285: When a person tastes the Torah of the true tzadik, that light will always remain by him even at the time when he's far away and distant from the Tzadik. Rabeinu explains this in the context of the verse written in Proverbs 31.Torah 286: The essential pleasure of Gan Eden is the upper and lower wisdom of G-dliness one attains if he merits to enter Gan Eden. But to enter, one needs to enter via the gates of Gan Eden. These gates, though, have been submerged in the earth and in order to raise these gates form the earth, one needs to study Jewish Law/Halacha!

Julie Carrick Dalton has written countless articles in Business Week, the Boston Globe, The Hollywood Reporter and many more, but what she is really passionate about is the environment, her forest, her farm and her kids. All the passions culminated into a pretty darn successful first novel, Waiting for the Night Song, which in 2021 was identified as the most anticipated book by the likes of Newsweek * USA Today * CNN * Parade * Buzzfeed * GoodReads * The Nerd Daily * SheReads and more. It did not disappoint having become a best seller and winning many literary awards. In this episode, we learn about her single-handedly saving a forest, creating a farm, raising bees, and raising kids, even though we learn that she has been called to the mat regarding some of her parenting practices. She was a joy to meet with and to learn of how she grabs that string and flies that kite. Bethany Clift's debut has come out at JUST the write time. 'Last One at the Party' tells the story of a woman alone on Earth, after humanity has been wiped out by a virus. We talk about how the idea came on a long, lonely journey, and how she got to know the character that readers would be spending so much time with. It's one of the publisher's lead titles this year, and the film rights have already been sold, so it's set for success. We discuss how her background in film production helped her visualise and plan the story slightly differently, and why she owes so much to her editor. You can hear how much she knew about the story before she started, and why the first sentence was so important. We have a good run through her writing space and working day, and how things are changing as she moves on to her second book.Get a copy of 'Last One at the Party' here - https://amzn.to/3fh5145You can support the show, and get involved at Patreon.com/writersroutine too!@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Boomtank Business Show with Carolyn Cole | Where Business Success And Happiness Meet
In this Fast Take episode, I read the quick story of Joan of Arc to bring home how implausible her story was, but yet how true. It's important we remember, "the most extraordinary" is possible. The second story is a story about stealing time. I read this one to illustrate our calendars are things of our creation; we control calendars. Never let your calendar, especially January 1st, control what you believe is possible each year. Date selection is arbitrary and each day fully matters. Tune in and enjoy! P.S. If you like the podcast, please subscribe and leave a 5-star rating/review in iTunes. It really helps the show and I'll be sure to give you a personal "shout-out" in a future show episode. TY! https://www.boomtank.com
