Merry Christmas, Honestly listeners! We hope you've been enjoying the parties, the spirit of charity, the lights, the tree at Rockefeller Center, the schmaltzy movies, and of course, the infectious Christmas music everywhere you turn. But did you know that the Americans who wrote nearly all of the Christmas classics were . . . Jewish? Indeed, many of the writers of your favorite Christmas jingles were the children of parents who had fled Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe during the great wave of immigration between 1880 and 1920. Sammy Cahn, the son of Galician Jewish immigrants, wrote the words to “Let it Snow!” and was known as Frank Sinatra's personal lyricist. There is also Mel Torme, the singer-songwriter responsible for composing the timeless “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” His father fled Belarus for America in the early 20th century. Frank Loesser, a titan of Broadway and Hollywood musicals, wrote the slightly naughty “Baby, It's Cold Outside.” He was born into a middle-class Jewish family, his father having left Germany in the 1890s to avoid serving in the Kaiser's military. Johnny Marks, the man who gave us “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree”—yes, he was also one of the chosens. Then there's the greatest American composer of them all, Irving Berlin. His “White Christmas” is one of the biggest-selling singles in the history of American music. Berlin's earliest memory was of watching his family's home burn to the ground in a pogrom as his family fled Siberia for Belarus before emigrating to NYC in 1893. Today, Free Press columnist Eli Lake explores why and how it was that American Jews helped create the sound of American Christmas. We hope you enjoy this delightful and surprising jaunt through musical history. Happy holidays! *** This show is proudly sponsored by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). In this heartwarming episode of "Shark Theory," host Baylor Barbee shares insights from his favorite yearly event, the Holly Jolly Christmas giveaway. As this festive week kicks off, Baylor recounts how the event has evolved over six years into a smooth-running operation, thanks to consistency and teamwork. This narrative not only highlights the joy of giving back but also illustrates the significance of growth and improvement in any long-term endeavor. Baylor reflects on the importance of maintaining consistency in activities, whether they are personal habits or organizational operations. He emphasizes that with repeated effort, tasks that once seemed daunting will become manageable, as he experienced with the annual bike and scooter giveaway. His nonprofit's ability to adapt, like switching focus from bicycles to scooters based on community needs, shines as a testament to the significance of listening to those you serve. This episode also underscores the powerful dynamics of teamwork and volunteer dedication, showcasing how collaboration toward a unified goal can lead to exceptional results. Key Takeaways: Consistency and dedication lead to growth and ease in any pursuit. Building the right team focused on a common mission is crucial for success. Listening to and adapting based on the needs of your audience or community drives effective service. Taking time to appreciate achievements and the journey is essential. The power of a unified, dedicated effort can transform charitable initiatives. Notable Quotes: "Anything that you do and you stay consistent with, you will inevitably improve it." - Baylor Barbee "If you surround yourself with people who are focused on a cause, the work will inevitably get done." - Baylor Barbee "You have to evolve with it...and always answer the call of what the actual need is." - Baylor Barbee "I just smiled and I just had a chance to actually enjoy it." - Baylor Barbee "Find a way to look at it and say, look I'm still having fun. I enjoy this." - Baylor Barbee

After spending twelve straight hours in an international airport, I can authoritatively say that we could use a few more new Christmas originals to give all those timeless classics a much needed rest. Seriously. You can rework “Holly Jolly Christmas” into reggae, Western swing, or house, but it doesn’t change the fact that at some […] The post Sloppy Scales: “Sweet Baby Jesus” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.
Many songs we sing at Christmas are reminders that Christmastime is supposed to be happy. Songs like "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," "Jingle Bells," and "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" all communicate that Christmas time is to be a joyous, trouble-free season. But as we talked about last week, for some of you, personal problems may be keeping you from experiencing the joy of the season. Today, we look at what we can do this Christmas to avoid disillusionment. How we can improve our level of joy this Christmas. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz provides an in-depth look at Burl Ives and his iconic Christmas song, "A Holly Jolly Christmas." First introduced to audiences in the 1964 Christmas special 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,' where Ives voiced Sam the Snowman, the song was later released as a single in 1965 and featured on the album 'Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.' This album charted at No. 32 on Billboard's Best Bets for Christmas in 1967. Analytic Dreamz discusses the historical significance of "A Holly Jolly Christmas," including its recognition by ASCAP as one of the top 25 most-performed holiday songs at the start of the 21st century. The song experienced a remarkable chart resurgence, first appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017 and peaking at No. 38, then climbing to a new high of No. 4 in January 2020.In 2024, the song continues its legacy with impressive achievements. It has jumped 23 positions to reach No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of December 9, 2024. On Spotify, it has seen a significant increase, gaining 46 spots to rank at No. 77 globally. Radio airplay has also surged, with 18.7 million audience impressions, reflecting its widespread popularity.Analytic Dreamz also touches on Burl Ives' enduring legacy. Even after his passing in 1995, "A Holly Jolly Christmas" remains a staple of holiday celebrations, featured on countless playlists and in festive events. The song's relevance is further underscored by active discussions on social media platforms like X, where fans continue to celebrate Ives' contribution to Christmas music.Join Analytic Dreamz for a comprehensive exploration of how "A Holly Jolly Christmas" has not only maintained but grown its cultural impact, ensuring Burl Ives' place in the pantheon of holiday music legends.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

As we embrace the holiday season, many of us, especially those over 40 who are constantly striving for success in our careers and personal lives, might be facing this struggle: Despite living a life that seems like a dream, we often catch ourselves measuring our success against where we think we should be. Sounds familiar? In this special Christmas episode, Ted explores how gratitude can transform our mental health, how shifting our mindset from idealized future goals to acknowledging our progress can change our perspective on success.
Cue the holiday cheer, as Matt Fox and I take you through a musical sleigh ride counting down our all-time favorite holiday songs. Picture the glow of twinkling lights and the scent of pine as we reminisce on the melodies that score our festive memories, from "A Holly Jolly Christmas" to hitting the dance floor with "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." And we're not just about spreading joy through music; we also share a heartwarming tale of a sheep's rescue from a precarious cliff in Britain, a testament to the resilience and compassion that embody the spirit of the season. Then, get ready to open your hearts to Tiberius, the lovable canine awaiting his forever home, as we highlight the importance of pet adoption during the holidays. As we bid farewell for a short break, we're leaving you with an invitation to carry the torch of positivity into the New Year. It's a blend of laughter, speed, and kindness that we hope you'll take with you into the coming days. So, pull up a cozy chair by the fire, and let's share in the stories and songs that warm the soul.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. Award-winning performer John Owen-Jones (Les Miz/Phantom) releases a Christmas single - track one Holly Jolly Christmas and track two On Christmas Eve. Both tracks are taken from John Owen-Jones: The Christmas Album released last year. On Christmas Eve, is a previously unheard track from the vaults of legendary songwriter Les Reed who wrote Delilah and It's Not Unusual among many others. John said “I was given permission to update the original demo Les made and give it a more contemporary feel, so I completely re-orchestrated it. At the same time I took the opportunity to rewrite some of the original lyrics by Bill Martin (Puppet On A String/Congratulations) too and I'm delighted with the result” On Holly Jolly Christmas John said: “This is my fun take on an always popular Christmas classic that was a joy to record and I think it really captures that live-from-your-living-room vibe. I even got some pals into the studio with me to capture some realistic Christmas party crowd sound effects!” Highlights of 2022 include John performing at the Sydney Opera House, creating a leading role in the brand new musical Great British Bake Off and a successful solo UK concert tour culminating with a sold-out show at Her Majesty's Theatre in London's West End. John will be performing more concerts in December. In 2023 John returns to the West End in the Great British Bake Off Musical with a lead role as Phil Hollinghurst! This year John released his own theatre-based podcast with fellow Broadway and West End star Alistair Brammer called ‘The Last Show on Earth' that asks special guests the question: What show would you see if you had one night left on Earth? The first episode aired on Friday 3 June with guest Matt Lucas and new episodes are released monthly. At just 26, John became the youngest actor ever to play the role of ‘Jean Valjean' in the West End and was the first British actor to play the role both in the West End and on Broadway. John Owen-Jones has also played the role of ‘The Phantom' in ‘The Phantom of the Opera' nearly 2000 times - more than any other actor in the history of the West End production. John has so far released five albums, ‘John Owen-Jones' (2009), ‘Unmasked' (2012), ‘Rise' (2015), ‘Bring Him Home' (2016) ‘Spotlight' (2019) and ‘The Christmas Album' (2021) Hosted on Acast. “I have been researching music and religion for most of my career. I'm especially interested in the study of religion through the experience of people. It's called lived religion. It's not as much the sacred texts and the books, but how people experience religion and how they act it out. Music is very important to that experience. It's a big part of why people stay connected to churches. “In this season, we're all aware that religious music is never heard more often than during the holidays. Everywhere you go you hear the familiar Christmas jingles, but also some of the hymns of Christmas that go back hundreds of years. And now we don't think of them as particularly religious. Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and Silent Night are actually hymns. So, it's a great time to think about how religion enters the experience, not just of religious people and Christians, but everyone in America who is surrounded by this music. “I'm also interested in the double-edged feeling of Christmas. Because on one hand it is a holiday of joy, and for a lot of people it's their favorite time of year. But it also has a different side. There's often a lot of stress associated with the tempo of the season. And other people feel disconnected during a time of year when people are supposed to be enjoying their families, friends, and loved ones. A lot of people are not really a part of that, especially with the isolation that has come along with the pandemic. It can be a difficult time for those people. “But I think for everyone, there's what I call a brew of nostalgia and melancholy that is characteristic of the season. Even if you have family and are surrounded by loved ones, there are inevitably people who are no longer in your life. We lose parents and grandparents. And children grow up and move away and can't always make it home for the holidays. So, it's really easy to feel dislocated this time of year. It's a time where we think about the passage of time and reflect on how we've changed and the people around us have changed and may not exist anymore. The music can capture those feelings because music holds memories for people. Aromas and music trigger memories like nothing else. “I want to reassure people that if they're feeling this ambivalence and conflicted emotions around the holidays that that is natural and almost universal. There are good reasons for it. Hopefully people won't get themselves into a Charlie Brown-like funk over it but just recognize that this is a season of the year where we reflect, and it's OK to be a bit introspective. We all need some time away from the hustle and bustle of family life to think about the kind of world we live in and the part we can play in making a better world.”Read David's piece at The Conversation here and his piece in the Los Angeles Times here. Since I recognize that the holidays are often busy, stressful, and not so holly jolly, I want to remind you of some of the things we singles should be grateful for and also give you all some ideas to bring a bit more joy to your Christmas season. We can plan time away without permission or agreement (within reason)We can decorate as little or as much and in any fashion we want.We don't have to share the goodies and gifts we receive. We can get a little extra fluffy (or unshaved) and no one knows the difference or cares. We can listen to Christmas music and watch movies without enduring eye rolls or ridicule. Some of us have less work to do overall... less food to make, fewer gifts to wrap, one side of the family to visit, etc. Some ways to make your holidays more jolly:Travel with your kids.Give to a cause - time or money or bothKeep things simple and NOT perfectTake care of yourself- take a bath, a walk, a nap. Pamper yourself. Get a facial or massage.Say a prayer. Meditate. Reflect on things you are grateful for.Merry Christmas, Friends!xoxo,StacieSupport the show

We at What the Riff!?! hope that y'all have a great Christmas — we hope these songs make your season a little more merry and bright.“Deck the Halls” by Twisted SisterThis classic carol was probably not originally envisioned to be quite as rocking as this, but Dee Snyder and Twisted Sister took it up a notch! This is the sixth and last Twisted Sister studio album they would produce, and we're sure they donned their gay apparel for this final outing. “Skynyrd Family” by Lynyrd SkynyrdSome southern charm was put on this song that tells of Lynyrd Skynyrd finishing up their tour and headed home for Christmas. It is off their eleventh studio album entitled “Christmas Time Again,” released in 2000. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” by the Jackson 5John Lynch brings us a classic Christmas song as performed by the Jackson 5. Michael Jackson recorded this song on his 12th birthday in 1970.“2000 Miles” by the PretendersThis song was on “Learning to Crawl,” the breakout studio album by the Pretenders released in 1983. Chrissie Hynde wrote the song for James Honeyman-Scott, the group's original guitarist who had passed away the year prior to this recording.“Mistress for Christmas” by AC/DCRob may find a lump of coal in his stocking for picking this song for the Christmas podcast! Brian Johnson of AC/DC isn't looking for peace, love, and joy for Christmas…but for a little Christmas nookie. We learned that this song was inspired by Donald Trump.“Joy to the World” by Michael BoltonWe don't get a lot of Michael Bolton on our podcasts, and John Lynch set out to rectify that. Bolton voices this classic Christmas hymn in his unique Yacht Rock style.“Boogie Woogie Santa Claus” by the Brian Seltzer OrchestraBrian Seltzer of Stray Cats fame put this one out there in 2002. The Brian Seltzer Orchestra formed in 1990 as a swing and jump blues band, and put out the album “Boogie Woogie Christmas” with this and other Christmas classics. This is a cover of the song, which was originally released by Mabel Scott in 1954.“(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” by Perry ComoPerry Como released this classic Christmas song in 1954. It tells of the longing to be home at Christmas, and some of the travelers making their way home.“Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda LeeJohnny Marks, who wrote “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and other Christmas songs wrote this one as well. Brenda Lee recorded this in 1958 when she was 13 years old. It is the fifth best selling Christmas single of all time according to Neilson SoundScan. “Feliz Navidad” by Jose FelicianoPuerto Rican musician Jose Feliciano wrote this in 1970. He recorded it in Los Angeles while feeling homesick at Christmas as his extended family was in New York. “Feliz Navidad” means “Merry Christmas” in Spanish. “It's Gonna Be a Punk Rock Christmas” by the RaversWayne brings us a bit of PUNK for the Christmas season. The Ravers released this back in 1977. “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy WilliamsWe decided to include more “non-rock singles” in this episode, and this classic holiday tune originated in 1963 on Williams' first Christmas album. It tells of all the activities that surrounds the Christmas season.“Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!” by Dean MartinSammy Cahn and Jule Styne wrote this in the summer of 1945 during a heat wave in Hollywood, California. Dean Martin released a version in 1959, and re-recorded it in 1966.“Blue Christmas” by Seymour Swine and the SquealersThis novelty song was recorded in 1984 for a North Carolina radio station morning show. Denny Brownlee is the comedian and impressionist who brought Seymour Swine to life - primarily to avoid copyright issues associated with ©Porky Pig.“O Come All Ye Grateful Dead Heads” by Bob RiversComedian Bob Rivers had this parody on his “Twisted Christmas” album in 1987.We hope y'all have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
