Writer & director Leo Leigh joins us to discuss his new debut film Sweet Sue
What are you thirsty for? 00h 11’33” You can’t have me (If you don’t have him) 00h 17’24” Vamp! 00h 22’18” I’m California bound 00h 27’44” A darker shade of blue 00h 32’36” Take it up a step 00h 36’37” Zee bap 00h 40’16” At the Old Majestic Nickel matinee 00h 46’00” Little por millionaire 00h 51’50” Some like it hot 00h 58’14” Let’s be bad 01h 03’22” Dance the world away 01h 08’53” Fly, Mariposa, fly 01h 13’28” You could’ve knocked me over with a feather 01h 18’20” He lied when he said hello 01h 23’52” Ride out the storm 01h 28’43” Tip-tap trouble 01h 34’37” Baby, let’s be good 01h 38’18” Anécdotas y curiosidades 01h 41’11” Chicago (musical “Sugar”) – Maria Santallusia 01h 48’37” A lonely Joe 01h 53’19” Let’s be bad (Smash) – Megan Hilty

Did you know that the white material on the outside of space shuttles was not metal or glass but actually fabric? Specialized quilts, two inches thick, covered the space shuttles and protected the astronauts from deadly heat and radiation. Jean Wright was one of the eighteen “Sew Sisters” who crafted these thermal blankets, mostly by hand, with incredible precision and skill. From sending letters to Johnson Space Center as a child with crayon-drawn patch ideas, Jean had always aimed to work for NASA, patiently applying and eagerly awaiting for the job she was meant to have, one that would help secure – in a literal sense- the materials that would protect the vehicles carrying the astronauts to space, and secure her place in NASA history… this is the conversation that you must not miss. On this very special 200th EPISODE of the Casual Space Podcast, Beth enjoys speaking with Jean Wright, sharing her inspiring stories from her time at NASA as a “Sew Sister.” Together, Beth and Jean discuss stories from Jean's newly-released book, Sew Sister: The Untold Story of Jean Wright and NASA's Seamstresses. The book, just like this conversation, unveils both the grandeur of space flight and the intimacy of a needle and thread, and the story of Jean's childhood passion for space and sewing, and her fascinating work for NASA's shuttle program. Listen as Beth learns the definition of what schnibbles* are. Note: It's a variant of schnibbles, a far more common term for “scraps,” or “small pieces,” which is heard in parts of the United States that were settled largely by German immigrants. The term comes from German Schnippel, meaning “scraps.” Imagine having the task of cutting the fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer that went to the Moon with Neil Armstrong, and several shuttle flight- so it could be displayed at the University of Cincinnati . And guess what kind of fabric the Wright Brother's used for the first flight? A kind of high-end, expensive fabric women would use for their undergarments! “I'm all about fabric!” – Jean Wright, Casual Space Podcast Jean Wright is a former NASA Aerospace Composite Technician- a NASA seamstress. Jean worked with the United Space Alliance at the Thermal Protection System Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. One of 18 seamstresses in this critical role, Jean and her co-workers dubbed their group, “The Sew Sisters”, using machines and hand stitching to build, create and repair thermal protection flight hardware and parachutes. Wright worked on the Endeavor, Atlantis and Discovery space shuttle missions. She also worked on test parachutes and aft-skirt blankets for the Orion spacecraft. When she's not sewing, Jean is a photographer for SpaceUpClose; www.spaceupclose.com Beth's Note: I especially loved “Big Mo,” “Sweet Sue”, and “Lurch” - the names of the sewing machines used by Jean and her team at NASA (some from 1914)! More about Jean: Jean says she's retired, but she's ever the most incredible NASA advocate, photographer, speaker and representative. Jean remains involved with NASA as a Docent for the Shuttle Atlantis exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center. She is a member of NASA's Speakers Bureau, representing the organization at civic, professional, educational and public events. She has been a keynote speaker at the MQX Quilt Festival in 2018, Women's History Month at KSCVC in 2018, Family Day at the Udvar-Hazy National Air & Space Museum in 2016, the International Quilt Festival with Astronaut Karen Nyberg and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. One of her life's biggest thrills was being asked by Mark Armstrong to cut and prepare for auction, pieces of historic muslin fabric from the Wright Brothers 1903 Flyer that his father, Neil Armstrong, carried to the moon aboard the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. Natasha Yvette Williams is currently originating the role of Sweet Sue in the brand new production of “Some Like It Hot” on Broadway. She gets real as she opens up about why she doesn't consider herself a singer, admitting that she's still a little insecure about her singing, but despite dealing with imposter syndrome, Natasha remains positive by constantly reminding herself that everything is a challenge, a lesson, and a blessing. She also shares where she used to get validation and why all the validation she needs now comes from her. Being a part of “Some Like It Hot”, she continues her goal to develop a great relationship with each and every other cast member and see how it unfolds on stage. Natasha recalls watching Lily Tomlin in “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” which sparked something in her to join the musical theatre, and why she wants to have the same impact on other people whenever she performs. Natasha Yvette Williams is an actress who has starred in Broadway shows, including “The Color Purple”, “A Night with Janice Joplin”, “Waitress”, “Chicago”, “Chicken and Biscuits”, and “Porgy and Bess”. Democrat Pat Ryan (@PatRyanUC) just won a special Congressional election in upstate New York that has the entire political world talking. Few picked him to win in the traditionally Republican-leaning area. But against the odds, the combat veteran pulled it off. And inspired people of all backgrounds nationwide. And now, analysts and strategists nationwide are rushing to understand how he did it. We'll take you inside the historic victory in a way no other conversation with Ryan has. Our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is a good friend and supporter of Ryan. He also lives in the NY-19th Congressional district that Ryan just won. This candid, smart and fun conversation takes you inside the district, the strategy, the demographics, the leadership lessons-learned, and the future. And explores what it all means for the fall election (when Ryan will run again, in a newly-designed district), for the future of politics, for the power of independent Americans, and for the Presidential election in 2024. Ryan's election victory is a case study in focus, planning and heart. And by fighting gas prices, utility companies, Trump, abortion rollbacks, and his own party, the win is a case study in how to appeal to independent voters in 2022. You'll also hear what Ryan (a former Army intelligence officer) thinks about the breaking news that Trump kept highly classified documents unsecured at his resilience in Mar-A-Lago. We'll also dig into a new effort in Pennsylvania led by former NFL football star and Vietnam veteran Rocky Blier to open closed primaries to veterans–and hundreds of thousands of other independent voters who have been shut out of the process and denied a voice. Roughly 50% of veterans call themselves independent in that state–and nationwide. Independent doesn't mean the middle. It means none of the above. And the solution for empowering them is not a new party founded by Republicans and Democrats who switched jerseys a few weeks ago. It's fixing a broken election system–with efforts like this one at the state level in Pennsylvania. We'll pull apart why. And, speaking of independent politics, we'll share a #WhereIsYang update. It's been one week since Forward Party Co-Chair Andrew Yang ghosted on a scheduled interview on this show. And after lots of outrage from the independent Americans community–and casual observers–Paul has significant developments to share. And, we'll check in with Paul's 3 and 7-year old boys, and reflect on a wild summer. You definitely wanna hear this pod and start your September off right. Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Families are such an important thing. We enter life into a family, and then we generally will be around them the rest of our lives. The most important events in life are spent with family, and family is there when you need help the most, so it's natural to have stories about family and the impact its members can have on each other. Each family is different, and so each story is unique, and it's something that makes the world beautiful and varied. Today we have some stories about family, among others, and each is a different take on what family means. We'll be able to listen to Don White, Joe Pagliuca, and Donna Ingham. On today's episode, enjoy the following: “Sweet Sue” by Donna Ingham from Waiting for Roy & Other Family Tales (2:45) Radio Family Journal: "Stories About Other People" by Sam Payne (17:08) The Daily Mix: "Jackie Torrence" with Ed Stivender (22:45) “Crying Woman's Channel” by Don White from More Alive (30:57) “Tricky the Turtle & the Lion's Cave” by Big Joe Pagliuca from 6 Silly Stories (47:44)
On Saturday, May 1, a partnership of city entrepreneurs put on a COVID-responsible celebration called Troja Est Open, signaling that the city was, if not entirely open, at least eager to be open. HMM correspondent Corinne Carey spoke with a number of those involved, including the organizer of the event and local entrepreneur Susan Dunckle, the event's publicist Duncan Crary, and Troy Deputy Mayor Monica Kurzejeski. The event featured a parade, promotions from local businesses, a “Trojan Horse,” by Danny Killion of Weathered Wood Troy, which was fitted with a hollow belly to receive special handwritten missives about people, events & feelings from 2020. Nighttime events kicked off with a drone light show over the Hudson River. The day was presented by Sweet Sue’s Copper Pot, with financial support from River Street Market, Troy Local Development Corporation and Troy Capital Resource Corporation. The drone light show was sponsored by the Troy Redevelopment Foundation.

Questions? 1. Do you believe that God created Earth in six literal days? 2. Do you believe the Earth was covered with a literal flood? Undeniable evidence that both of those accounts in Genesis are accurate and have been verified by "Answers in Genesis" scientists. They are presented to the public at the Creation Museum (https://creationmuseum.org) and Ark Encounter (https://arkencounter.com) attractions in Northern Kentucky. Sweet Sue and I visited there a while back and strongly encourage each of you to put a visit to both attractions on your "bucket" list. You will be blessed to learn the truth! Here, spokesman Patrick Kanewske gives insight into the "genesis" of Biblical truth! https://www.buzzsprout.com/474535/2361464-biblical-truth-about-creation-and-the-flood.mp3?blob_id=7633028&download=true
HAPPY NEW YEAR!Sweet Sue and I gave up New Year Resolutions long ago. We quickly learned that they don't work if we don't make them work!So...because so many of you have asked how and why we got started with our radio/podcast ministry, we kick off 2020 by airing the interview we did early on with Carol Henry, owner/manager of WKTO-FM in New Smyrna Beach, FL.Carol was the first one in the radio industry that we contacted with our God-directed program idea. She strongly encouraged us to forge ahead...and WKTO was the first to air our weekly programs. We know that we know that God called us to record and share "God Thing!" stories more than 10 years ago! Sharing your story or one you've heard is an extremely effective way to to fulfill Jesus' command to share the "Good News" to the World. We pledged to serve Him this way and we are both totally "all-in" until He leads us somewhere else or takes us home to Heaven.Enjoy the interview!Chuck & Sue Cooper, HostsP.S. Your story needs to be told! Send a summary to us at: itsagodthingradio@hotmail.com. We will respond quickly!

The family visit episodes are always charged with emotions and we certainly got a double dose of those this week. You had a lot to say about that aspect of the game, and talk of the impact that Justice made was front and center. The featured religious moments prompted several comments, but certainly lots of us were happy to see it toned down from the over the top productions from seasons past. The predictions you offered up pivot on Abi, and it will be interesting to see her role in all of this play out in episode 13. For each episode, we provide 3 podcasts: an episode recap, an interview with the castoff, and a chance for Survivor fans like yourself to sound off on what you saw and how you think the castaways are fairing in the game. Nineteen fans shared their thoughts on episode 12 and predictions for what we'll see next. We want to thank and acknowledge everyone who contributed to another great Listener Feedback show. This week we heard from: Dale, Sue, Jeremiah, Brian, Samantha, Lil' Russ, Anna, Ryan, Rashmi, Drew, Boston Mark, Michael, BrandonB, Christy, Josh, Jen, Carolyn, Paul and Krista. As part of The Jazz Show's tribute to Fall and the "back to work/school/grind" syndrome we present Part 2 of our educational and I hope, entertaining Jazz Feature explaining this unique American art form known as Jazz. Maestro Bernstein tells you with musical demonstrations by himself at the piano and guest artists like Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Buster Bailey, Louis Armstrong etc. what is and what isn't Jazz. The second part is an an analysis of a "standard" tune (Sweet Sue) and the way different artists interpret and improvise on it with people like Phil Woods, Teo Macero and Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Leonard Bernstein is his usual eloquent and lucid self making the learning process fun and educational and will give one a basic idea of what Jazz is all about. Viva Leonard Bernstein!
The production team of "Sweet Sue" - advertising representative Fred Golden, general manager Larry Goossen, playwright A.R. Gurney, casting director Donna Isaacson, and producer Arthur Whitelaw - discuss the path the play took to Broadway, each panelist's individual involvement, the challenges of casting, production costs, ticket prices, and how box office grosses effect the advertising campaign.
This is Part 2 of The Jazz Show's "back to school" mode. Maestro Leonard Bernstein is arguably one of the most important musical icons of the 20th century and being American born, he heard Jazz music from the time he was very young. Bernstein loved Jazz and it's players and most importantly, respected those players as artists. Bernstein recorded this album in 1957 but it's message is universal and timeless. There are a few quaint references, of course that are dated but they don't affect this disc's message. It's basically in two parts. In Part 1, Bernstein tells us what is and what isn't Jazz and what gives Jazz music it's distinctive sound. In Part 2 Bernstein takes apart an old standard tune called "Sweet Sue, Just You" and we hear how musicians of different eras interpret and alter this melody.Bernstein is entertaining, funny and educational at the same time. His great communicative skills are evident throughout this recording. Sit back and enjoy "What is Jazz".
