Tuomas Heikkilän 13 miljoonan euron megahanke mullistaa historiantutkimuksen ja paljastaa: Suomen Nato-yhteys juontaa jo keskiajalle Turun yliopiston dosentti, Helsingin yliopiston kirkkohistorian professori Tuomas Heikkilä johtaa kolmen kansainvälisen kollegansa kanssa yli 13 miljoonan euron CODICUM-tutkimusta. Tavoitteena on valaista keskiaikaa ennennäkemättömällä tavalla. Ensimmäistä kertaa Euroopan tutkimusneuvoston jättirahoituksen on Suomessa saanut humanistinen tutkimus. CODICUMin kymmenien tutkijoiden ryhmän johdossa on historiantutkija Heikkilän ohella tanskalainen kirjallisuustieteilijä, norjalainen paleografi ja biokodikologi Britanniasta, koska nykyisin kaikki huippututkimus on monitieteistä. Aineistona on maailman suurin kokoelma keskiaikaisia kirjafragmentteja, joista tutkitaan tekstien lisäksi muun muassa kirjainmuotoja, väriaineita ja pergamenttinahkojen eli kirjoiksi päätyneiden vasikoiden, lampaiden ja jopa hylkeen DNA:ta. Heikkilä kuvaa kirjoja keskiajan ylivertaiseksi informaatioteknologiaksi, joka muokkasi yhteiskuntaa ja loi kulttuurisia arvoverkostoja, joihin Pohjolassa haluttiin kuulua. Heikkilä pitää Suomen ja Ruotsin liittymistä Natoon luontevana, koska läntisten yhteyksien kautta juuret ulottuvat 1200-luvulle. It provides elaborate, rich ethnography to make sense of how the Mengen engage with their land and outside actors like companies, NGOs, and the state through agriculture, logging, plantation labor, and environmental conservation. These practices have shaped the Mengen's lived environment, while also sparking debates on what is considered valuable and how value is created. The book is the result of hard work: for years Tuomas Tammisto has gained rich empirical research to detail how indigenous Mengen people perceive and live with the threats of logging. The chapters are not only rich in ethnography and theory, but they are also interlaced with beautiful photos and poetic song lyrics both in the original and translated languages, to provide an eye-opening window into Mengen perceptions of their complex lived environment. Sieltä mopoiästä asti aamuyöstä lauantaina leipomolle noustiin, Joonas muisteli tutustumistaan leipomotyöhön.- Yleensä meillä oli niin, että kello 1.20 soi perjantain ja lauantain välisenä yönä kello. Puoli kolmeksi ajeltiin Viitailasta Lahteen leipomoon, Teppo jatkoi.Veljesten isä Veikko Ylä-Hemmilä osti Viipurilaisen Kotileipomon 90-luvulla ja leipuriveljekset ottivat perheyrityksestä vetovastuun vuonna 2014.Perheyrittämisen arki on veljesten mukaan omanlaistaan ja erilaista, kun jos olisi töissä, tai jos mukana olisi muita osakkaita, kuin oma perhe.- Olemme selvinneet ja pystymme istumaan samassa pöydässä edelleen. Se on hyvä, että suhteet ovat säilyneet. Se ei tarkoita, etteikö siellä oltaisi kipuiltu välissä, Teppo kertoi ja muistutti, että juttelu veljesten kesken on välillä hyvinkin kärkevää.- Kai se on rikkaus kuitenkin, hän summasi.Kuuntele haastattelusta, luonnistuuko jokaisella veljeksellä leipomossa homma kuin homma tarpeen vaatiessa, montako uutta tuotetta on jo kehitteillä tulevaisuutta varten ja miten näiden asiantuntijoiden mielestä juusto ja kinkku tulee asetella leivän päälle.

Pihlajalinna on tehnyt tuloskäänteen. Samalla liikevaihdon rakenne on muuttunut radikaalisti.Siinä missä vuonna 2021 julkinen sektori toi 430 miljoonan ja yksityinen puoli 220 miljoonan liikevaihdon, viime vuonna voimasuhteet olivat jo lähes toisinpäin: julkisista palveluista tuli enää 270 miljoonaa, yksityiseltä puolelta jo 450 miljoonaa euroa.Isoja ulkoistussopimuksia on päättynyt ja päättymässä, mutta samaan aikaan Pihlajalinna on kasvanut vauhdilla erityisesti vakuutusasiakkaissa. Vakuutusyhtiöiltä kertyi viime vuonna 150 miljoonan liikevaihto, eli kolmannes yksityisen puolen liikevaihtoeuroista.Vakuutuspuolen kasvu alkoi kiihtyä vuonna 2022, jolloin Pihlajalinna osti Pohjola Sairaalan ja solmi samalla yhteistyösopimuksn Pohjolan kanssa. Kun Pohjolan vakuutusasiakas soittaa Pohjola Terveysmestari -palveluun, puhelimeen vastaa Pihlajalinnan työntekijä. Samanlaisen ohjauspalvelun Pihlajalinna tuottaa myös Fennialle.Eikö vaarana ole, että suuremmat kilpailijat kopioivat toimintatavan?"Jostain syystä tätä mallia ei ihan sellaisenaan ole näkynyt markkinalla aikaisemmin", Pihlajalinnan toimitusjohtaja Tuomas Hyyryläinen sanoo. "Joskus esimerkiksi markkinakolmosena on kiva olla, koska voi tehdä sellaisia asioita, jotka joillekin toisille toimijoille eivät ole yhtä luontevia."Liikevaihdon rakenteen muuttumisen lisäksi Pihlajalinna on saanut kannattavuutensa kuntoon. Yleensä matalakatteiseksi mielletty julkisten palvelujen puoli teki viime vuonna peräti 8 prosentin oikaistun EBITA-kannattavuuden.
