This week on the Fall Obsession Podcast, we're joined by Heidi Stout—huntress, outdoor advocate, founder of The Light Ranch, host of From the Ashes Podcast and someone whose personal journey has been shaped by faith, resilience, and a deep connection to the outdoors. In this episode Heidi shares her story, from her introduction to hunting and the outdoors to the struggles and experiences that have influenced her passion for helping others. We discuss the lessons learned through time spent in the field, the importance of mentorship, and how hunting and the outdoors can serve as a powerful tool for building confidence, character, and community. We also explore the mission behind The Light Ranch and how Heidi is using outdoor experiences to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Along the way, we talk about conservation, stewardship and the responsibility hunters have to pass on our traditions to the next generation. This conversation goes far beyond hunting tactics and gear. It's about purpose, perseverance, and the people and experiences that shape who we become.Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/) - use code "fallobsession15" to save with HootBear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/) - use code "fallobsession" when shopping online with Bear RiverTactacam Reveal Cameras (https://www.tactacam.com/)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
There are plenty of Conservation issues earning local and national spotlights, but what is happening right now behind the curtain in Texas may not be discussed enough. Sam returns for a live solo show with a lot on the agenda. Often covering conservation topics in other States, he takes this opportunity to share a concerning look behind the curtain in his home State of Texas. While both residents and non-residents may believe everything is running just fine in the Lone Star State, there is no doubt specific people are pushing into certain positions which hold the influence to begin chipping away with an anti-hunting agenda. Additionally, Sam talks about the perception of hunting bears and predators, and what true conservation looks like. This is a very educational episode, and one that every hunter (and certainly Texans) should listen to. Trail cameras have come a long way from checking SD cards on your laptop. Today, hunters can receive real-time images from the woods, track deer movement from anywhere, and make decisions based on more information than ever before. In this episode, Sam sits down with Gregg Farrell - Vice President of Brand & Marketing at Tactacam. Gregg shares the story behind one of the most recognized brands in the hunting industry, how Tactacam grew from action cameras to a leader in cellular scouting, and what goes into developing products that hunters rely on every season. We also dive into the impact technology is having on modern hunting, how REVEAL has changed the way hunters scout and manage properties, the challenges of building a trusted outdoor brand, Tactacam's new Habitat IQ app and what the future may hold for trail cameras and hunting tech. Whether you're a die-hard trail camera addict, a tech-minded hunter, or just curious about where the hunting industry is headed, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/) - use code "fallobsession15" to save with HootBear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/) - use code "fallobsession" when shopping online with Bear RiverTactacam Reveal Cameras (https://www.tactacam.com/)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
Michigan's deer hunting landscape is changing in a big way, and this episode breaks it all down. We're joined by Michigan residents Brandon Ostrowski and Todd Sellon to discuss Michigan's new “One-Buck Rule,” the controversy surrounding it, and what it could mean for hunters across the state. We also dive into the recent changes to Michigan's rifle line law, how those updates may impact safety, hunter opportunity, and deer management moving forward. From tradition and conservation to hunter recruitment and public opinion, this conversation covers both sides of the debate and the real-world pros and cons these decisions could have in the woods during coming seasons. For this episode we are joined by Eric Clark from the Okayest Hunter crew! Eric has been a part of building an outdoor brand based on overcoming stereotypes, making it "okay" to hunt the way you want to hunt and having a healthy stewardship over our wildlife and habitats. Our conversation covers a lot of ground to include social media misconceptions about hunting, public land hunting, conservation, the overall popularity of hunting, some of Eric's hunting experiences that have made an impact on him and more! Eric and Okayest Hunter believe that hunts are not measured in inches or mounts, but rather experiences and memories!Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/) - use code "fallobsession15" to save with HootBear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/) - use code "fallobsession" when shopping online with Bear RiverTactacam Reveal Cameras (https://www.tactacam.com/)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
We are back on the Wildlife Conservation Battlefield for this episode with one of our own team members, Colorado Resident John Kesler. Colorado is continually in the spotlight when it comes to hunter's rights, extreme anti-hunting agendas and frequent attacks on science based wildlife management. Once again, new actions are coming down the pipe in Colorado to include several that would be a continuation of current anti-hunting agendas, while others have their benefits for hunters and anglers. John discusses the 6 citizen petitions that will be going to the commission, along with a significant ballot measure that would give Colorado a Constitutional Right to Hunt and Fish. There's some tricky wording sneaking into some of these matters which Residents should be mindful of. We unpack all of this and more in this episode. There's no better way to kick off spring turkey season on Fall Obsession Podcast than with our resident turkey hunting expert, master turkey caller and Southeastern Regional Coordinator Kendra DeBerry! Kendra has been turkey hunting almost her whole life, and to say she is a subject matter expert would not do her experience justice. She talks turkey hunting strategies, tactics, how to locate birds, what to do when a bird is playing hard to get, calling techniques, and much more. Overcoming adversity, motivating others and living a full life sums up the theme of this Fall Obsession Podcast episode as we sit down with Terry Colley who is known as "The Outdoor Amputee". Terry has lived most of his life with two prosthetic legs and it has not slowed him down from taking full advantage of his love for the outdoors. On the contrary, it has only fueled him to reach farther. What started as the same outdoor obsession we all know and can relate to turned into a personal mission to inspire others to get outside and not let other life factors slow them down. Terry shares his personal story, his own challenges, and how his journey has made big impacts to others. We also talk deer hunting, bear hunting, and much more! Colorado's Commercial Fur Ban, Oregon's IP28, Idaho's SB1300, the Congressional Review Act... everywhere you look factual, science-based wildlife and resource management is under attack. In this episode, Sam sits down to talk about what is currently riding in the hot seat of conservation in 2026, and what outdoors men and women need to be focusing on. Sam talks about the upcoming CPW commission meeting during which a citizen petition for a fur ban will be presented and the impacts this could have on hunting and trapping. He discusses the Oregon "Peace Act' which would effectively make hunting, fishing and even raising livestock in Oregon illegal. SB1300 in Idaho could put control of the Fish and Game department in the wrong hands. And of course Congress continuing to overstep using the CRA puts land and wildlife at risk. This is not a time to relax, this is a time to engage. The fight for conservation is a constant fight, and no one else is coming to our rescue. The concept of owning your own land, managing your own whitetail paradise, or even working for a company like Whitetail Properties may seem like an unattainable dream. This episode steps outside of our normal hunting and outdoor podcasting genre for a conversation with a true American and real-life hero. Anthony Dyer is our guest this week. He is a United States Air Force Veteran who served as a Special Missions Aviator. Anthony was the guy who was activated at a moment's notice when fellow troops on the ground needed immediate air support, and during his military career he few hundreds of high-risk missions; including the 2018 Jolly Green Rescue Mission. Anthony is also the author of the book "Moon Child" which talks about veteran struggles post-service and the return to normal life. During this conversation with Anthony we discuss his military service, including the nuts and bolts of his job and some of these specific missions. However, the most significant part of our discussing is his story, experience and encouragement to others when it is time to find purpose and identity back home.Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/)Bear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/)Tactacam Reveal Cameras (https://www.tactacam.com/)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
When the Fall Obsession Team arrives in camp, you can count on good times, good fellowship, lifelong memories and animals hitting the ground! Our 2025 West Texas Sandhill Crane hunt was no exception. We are joined in this episode by a few members of that crew, Todd, Mark and Kess to recap an unbelievable weekend. Several guys in camp were veteran waterfowl and sandhill crane hunters, but we also saw some first-timers get to experience this incredible hunt for the first time. The guys talk about the realities of hunting these massive birds, lessons learned, expectations vs realities for the newbies, and why crane/waterfowl hunting is a necessity for land and resource management. The 2025 hunting seasons yielded success, struggles, memories and growth for many hunters and our team would fall into most of those categories. Sam and Nick team up for another episode to recap in detail their 2025 whitetail and bow hunting efforts. The guys worked hard to learn from previous seasons and change their tactics to try and find the edge on some big bucks, but unfortunately that's easier said than done. While both were able to punch tags in the end, it was not without challenges. Sam and Nick talk about what worked, what didn't, the pros and cons of modern day hunting technologies, and more. Sam also breaks down his own personal struggles after arrowing a Texas buck this season and the lessons he learned after. This is a genuine, raw and relatable conversation which shows we are no different than the every-day American deer hunter. The two share decades of memories and highlights with one another and our listeners; talking about some of those significant moments growing up from Sam's childhood leading all the way to hunting together in present day. Colorado hunting and science-based wildlife management have been in the crosshairs for years, and things are not looking any better. This week's guest is Josh Wamboldt, a Colorado resident, outfitter, and by self-initiation a subject matter expert on the wolf reintroduction efforts and management practices currently happening in his State. Josh is very vocal about not being strictly "anti-wolf", but he has many concerns and issues with how Colorado has handled their wolf populations, and the practices they execute moving forward. We talk in detail about all the events, adjustments and migrations pertaining to wolf populations since the reintroduction, where Colorado is failing wildlife and residents with the current situations, and other factors and rumors surrounding CWD, their impact on other species and ranchers, and more. This is a very education conversation, and recorded as a live episode with active audience engagement we are happy to share this very informative discussion. We all know the whitetail grind. Year after year, around the clock and through all the seasons putting in the work hoping it will one day pay off on a monster buck. Very few work as hard as Ryan Reading; running dozens of cameras, studying deer patterns, and waiting to take the perfect moment and opportunity once it presents itself. For Ryan, it all came down to the 2025 rut and watching his giant target buck moving towards him from a stand he never thought he would see that deer from. Our show returns with a one of a kind guest, Eddie Boyer. Eddie is a Washington State resident, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and an inspiring conservationist. Eddie and Sam waste no time before they dive in to an educational and motivational conversation where they discuss current conservation issues, attacks on hunting, and issues specific to the State of Washington. They talk about current political climates; both local and national and the impact a hunter's voice can have when used appropriately, social media presences, and more. Eddie also shares a little bit of his personal life, describing himself as not your typical hunter or outdoorsman. Listen in to the inspiring story as Eddie shares how archery, hunting, and a love for the outdoors literally helped him turn his life around from a prison cell to the great outdoors, and from rags to ridges. You may have heard of it, "Ambler Road"; the 211-mile roadway authorized via Presidential Executive Order to run through Alaska's Brooks Range. Meanwhile, Congress has used the congressional review act (CRA) to overturn the BLM's resource management plans in Montana, North Dakota and Alaska, putting over 160 million acres at risk. And don't forget about Utah Senator Mike Lee's latest attempt to defile the current wilderness act. These are the main topics Sam brings to our attention in this episode. Our government is seemingly overreaching and not listening to science-based wildlife management and conservation and it is up to you, the hunter, the American and the voter to address it. This week's conversation is with a man named John, who you all may know as "The Public Land Advocate"! If you follow his page, you know John passionately uses his platform to advocate for any and everyone to be able to use our beloved public lands. We invited him to join us for an episode to discuss those same public spaces, the threats that seem to constantly attempt to limit access or take them away, and why it is important to protect our public access. John takes the conversation beyond just scenarios applicable to hunters, but how all outdoor enthusiasts find value in public land access, and the importance of working together to preserve these places for future generations. John originally found Fall Obsession back when we released episode 220 in which we discussed anti-hunters, haters and social media trolls. We discuss the hunter's social media presence, and the importance of representing hunting in an authentic sense. This week Sam sits down to bring some important topics to the front and center of our listener's minds. The push to remove hunter's and outdoor enthusiast's rights, access and abilities to enjoy America's public spaces continues to be threatened. Sam discusses the Roadless Rule, and the even more recent Public Lands Rule that are currently on the chopping block. He puts some emphasis on how some of the threats in 2025 have not come from any anti-hunting or animal rights extremists or groups, but instead from right-leaning politicians that many may believe they align with personally. Sam talks about how hunters should address these situations, and how they should carry themselves publicly when advocating for hunting and our rights. This is more than just another conservation episode, this is a call to step up and defend what you truly believe in amidst a world seemingly on fire. We discuss with her the life of a wildlife officer, navigating the wide range of wildlife and dynamics present in the state of Florida, ethics and legality, and Courtney's personal journey info enforcing Florida Law to protect Florida Game. Courtney shares what many listeners may hope to hear - some stories of the unique things and people she encounters in the role, in addition to some hunt talk. It was great to catch up with Courtney, and we hope you will join in and listen!Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/)Bear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/)Trophy Edits (https://trophyedits.com/?ref=fallobsession)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
This week we are joined by Cable Smith, host of the Lone Star Outdoor Show, for a hard-hitting conversation on the current battles surrounding wildlife conservation and hunting in the public eye. Cable shares his perspective as a longtime outdoor media voice on why hunting is so frequently and publicly under attack, how hunters contribute directly to conservation, and some of the issues currently in the crosshairs of Anti Hunting and Wildlife Groups and Extremists. No State is immune to it, and we discuss some of these immediate matters; including the Oregon PEACE Act - IP28 which would effectively ban all hunting and much more in the State of Oregon in 2026. If you're a hunter, angler, conservationist, or simply someone who cares about the future of wildlife and wild places, this is a conservation conversation you won't want to miss.Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/)Bear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/)Trophy Edits (https://trophyedits.com/?ref=fallobsession)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)
