Step into the joyful Jennyverse with singular indie folk singer-songwriter, author, and podcast host (Buffering The Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars Investigations, and The eX-Files), the prolific Jenny Owen Youngs, whose most recent magnificent album Avalanche dropped last September.
The brilliant and dazzling Helen Zaltzman pops in with some new asides in this encore episode of Ologies. Helen, host of the podcasts The Allusionist, Veronica Mars Investigations and Answer Me This, and a person who technically for a living researches the origins of language and thus is an etymologist, visits Alie's apartment to chat about various word origins, gender in language, the Bible a.k.a. The Oxford English Dictionary, origins of the filthiest slang, emoji decoding, mediocrity, step parents, babies wearing glasses, Greek kimonos, the romance of languages and the fundamental truth that language is always changing whether you want it to or not. Also tomatoes, pliable boobs, avocados, and fish trails.Follow Helen on Twitter & InstagramListen to episodes of The Allusionist mentioned in the show at theallusionist.org/notitle and theallusionist.org/sorryThis week's donation was made to POPStheclub.comMore links at alieward.com/ologies/etymologySmologies (short, classroom-safe) episodesSponsors of OlogiesTranscripts and bleeped episodesBecome a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, masks, totes!Follow @Ologies on Twitter or InstagramFollow @AlieWard on Twitter or InstagramSound editing by Jarrett Sleeper of MindJam Media, Steven Ray Morris and Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio ProductionsTranscripts by Emily White of The WordaryWebsite by Kelly R. Jenny Owen Youngs is coping with life transitions by getting lost in a whole variety of worlds. Jenny Owen Youngs' most recent EP is It's Dangerous to Go Alone. She hosts the podcasts Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. Here's some stuff we talked about: Our Feelings "That Josh Whedon stuff that went down" Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games Pac-Man is maybe the clearest metaphor for modern life as we know it Jenny is deep in The Witcher 3 When Jenny's brain won't shut up, Skyrim makes everything chill out "Our princess is in another castle!" That Super Mario Bros. movie where Mario is from Brooklyn Xalavier Nelson's episode from last season Dragonborn (ft. John Mark Nelson) Link is quite androgenous Fallout 4 is darker and gunnier than Jenny would prefer Video Game Feelings is an Area Code Audio production. Hosted and produced by Richard Clark. Associate produced by Nettie Smith. Additional help from Ashley Whitehurst and Matthew Linder.
Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 87 Sam is joined by Jenny Owen Youngs, singer-songwriter and co-host of the podcasts Buffering The Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. Jenny has chosen the 1997 sci-fi horror Cube (90 mins). Directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali, the film stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, and Maurice Dean Wint. Sam and Jenny discuss how she got started in podcasting, the box-office success of the film, and the challenges of navigating a cube within a cube. NEWS! We are doing a LIVE show at the London Podcast Festival at midday, Sunday 18 September. We're taking a quick break from reading Pride and Prejudice to watch the 2005 movie adaptation with one of our favorite podcasts, Veronica Mars Investigations.Vanessa is joined by Helen Zaltzman and Jenny Owen Youngs to dig through the movie, comparing it along the way to the BBC mini-series and, of course, the original text. They ask important questions like: How does Elizabeth hear Darcy's insult at the Meryton Ball? Is Mr. Bennet the true villain of Pride and Prejudice? And is Matthew McFadden wearing a wig in this movie? Next episode, we're returning to our original format with chapters 19 + 20 - the Collins proposal! ---Don't spend your daughter's dowry, but if you can spare $2/month, we'd love to have your support on Patreon! We had the pleasure of interviewing Hrishikesh Hirway over Zoom video!Acclaimed musician and Song Exploder host/creator Hrishikesh Hirway's first EP under his own name, Rooms I Used to Call My Own, is out now. The album features collaborations with a long list of acclaimed artists, songwriters and producers including Yo-Yo Ma, Jay Som, Baths, Jenny Owen Youngs, Jimmy Tamborello (The Postal Service, Dntel), Jonathan Snipes (Clipping), John Mark Nelson and Grammy-winners John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen) and Kimbra.Rooms I Used to Call My Own marks the first time Hirway has released music under his own name following five critically acclaimed records under the moniker The One AM Radio. A deeply personal work, the EP is informed by Hirway's experiences as a podcast host; eschewing the inward gaze of his previous work as an artist, Rooms I Used to Call My Own instead focuses on collaboration, each song formed out of a conversation of sorts with everyone he's brought into the project with him. Likewise, the subjects of the EP are all other people: the people he loves. The songs are about the deep love and appreciation he holds for his wife, Lindsey, as well as his parents and family.Hirway is also set to continue his Spring tour with Jenny Owen Youngs, performing select dates throughout the west coast in May. They'll be on stage together, doing one combined set of all their songs, performing as a duo. Jenny and Hrishikesh have collaborated as co-writers on several songs and are both storytellers, as hosts of popular, award-winning podcasts: Hrishikesh with Song Exploder, The West Wing Weekly and Home Cooking; and Jenny with Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. These special performances will be a mix of songs and stories from two dear friends; find tickets HERE and see below for a list of dates.Hrishikesh Hirway has been producing music for over two decades; first with his project The One AM Radio, and later with MOORS, a collaboration with Oscar-nominated rapper/actor Lakeith Stanfield. As a composer, his credits include the Netflix original series Everything Sucks!, the theme for ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast and the theme for the Song Exploder series on Netflix. Hirway launched the award-winning podcast Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and tell the stories behind their inspiration and creative process, in 2014. Since then, the podcast has been streamed and downloaded over 65 million times, and has featured guests including Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Solange, U2, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Roots and many more. Kristen Bell joins the show this week to talk about her new series The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window. It's a parody of domestic thriller movies like The Woman in The Window and The Girl on the Train. Kristen plays the character of Anna in the show, a woman who lives in an upscale suburb and is having a rough go of it lately. Anna does not do much other than drink lots of red wine and stare out her window from a comfy looking chair. That is until one day when she witnesses a horrific crime across the street, or at least she thinks she does. Interviewing Kristen this week is our friend Helen Zaltzman. Helen hosts the language and linguistics podcast The Allusionist and Veronica Mars Investigations, which recapped Kristen Bell's breakthrough show of the same name. Helen talks with Kristen Bell about the new show and what it was like not only starring in it, but also to produce it. Kristen also talks about some of the extreme things Veronica Mars fans have done in the past to get the show renewed. Plus, she shares the name she preferred to go by when she was growing up.

On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, we've reached the semi-finals of Making It, and also discovered the makers' post-show Instagram Live events... which are possibly more fun than the show itself?! Mentioned: Blake's recently completed bear sculpture; all the makers on Instagram [visit https://parentingroundabout.com for all links].We also returned (reluctantly) to Veronica Mars season 4, with the wrap-up episode from the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast. It didn't convince us to have fonder feelings for season 4. The VMI crew will be re-watching the show's pilot on Saturday, August 28, if you're interested. For next week: We'll watch the finale of Making It and check out Coda, a new movie on Apple TV+.
Join Jenny Owen Youngs, Helen Zaltzman and our resident legal expert Lo Dodds to celebrate the completion of the second year of Veronica Mars Investigations, with a parade of outtakes - about what happens to police dogs when they retire, how old is too old to join the FBI, gambling with pasta, and the very real dangers of huffing petrol (especially at any point in time since the Great Depression). Also! We have news about what we'll be doing for the grand finale of Veronica Mars Investigations! We will be ending at the beginning, with a rerecap of the pilot - and before we do, we want to watch it with YOU. Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman are joined again by Special Agent LaToya Ferguson to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 and try to solve its many remaining mysteries, including (but not limited to): who is the fifth lady of Veronica Mars? Will we ever get more Veronica Mars, and in which forms? Why has it taken so long for Veronica to have a fun night out?? Was Logan fridged? What IS 'fridged'? And was Jane The Therapist the criminal mastermind behind all of it??? Content note:Veronica Mars contains heavy themes, and this episode includes discussions referring to murder, rape and violence. On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, the mega-craft returned to Making It, along with a new project called the procrasti-craft. And we said goodbye to Baseball Blake, whose extremely cool origami door could not save him from a hanging chair that couldn't quite hang.We also said goodbye to Veronica Mars season 4 with "Years, Continents, Bloodshed" (title drawn from this season 2 scene [https://youtu.be/pR5ED-rnruo]). We knew what was coming and we are still annoyed. Next: We will return to Veronica Mars in a few weeks after the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast [https://www.veronicamarsinvestigations.com/] drops their wrap-up episodes. In the interim, we will continue with Making It and, in a tribute to the best season of Veronica Mars (that'd be #1) and its many flashbacks, we'll flash back to a movie from 1998: Practical Magic [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120791/].

For Tedious But Fine reasons, this month we've swapped the new episode and the retro one. So you'll get an all-new AMT in a fortnight, but now there's Retro AMT82 from 2009 and it's a really fun one! Some things have changed - technology, the nature of entrepreneurship, people wearing Bluetooth earpieces everywhere - whereas others are eternal, like the pain of teen romance, and Americans finding British words funny. On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, we watched the second half of Girls5Eva (episodes 5-8), which was just as silly as part 1. If you haven't checked out this joke machine yet, do yourself a favor and cue it up.We also took a sidelong glance at Neptune, California, with three episodes of the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast [https://www.veronicamarsinvestigations.com]: Season 4 Pitches, The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, and Mr. Kiss and Tell. What we learned: It's nice when someone else watches or reads for you and just gives you a nice tidy summary! Mentioned: The Veronica-in-the-FBI pitch that thankfully failed to win over TV execs [https://youtu.be/2_JzzR-zP0w].Next: In spite of ourselves, we're jumping in to season 4 with episode 1, "Spring Break Forever," and the accompanying VMI podcast episode. We'll also watch the multiple Academy Award-winning movie Nomadland.
Back we go to 17 October 2013 for retro AMT275. Geri Halliwell was launching a comeback, British coffee was not yet pumpkin spiced, two 14-year-olds needed a lucrative business plan, an adult was eating crayons, and listeners were dealing with unwanted gifts of paintings as they still are judging by our inbox. On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, we said goodbye to Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, season 2, with (almost) everyone in a pretty happy place. Since season 3 isn't a done deal yet, we can live with that. And to take away the sting of losing Zoey's song-and-dance numbers, we watched the first four episodes of Girls5Eva, a new original series on Peacock that is incredibly silly and a lot of fun. Next week, we'll watch the remaining four episodes. We'll also tiptoe back toward Neptune, California, with three episodes of the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast: Season 4 Pitches, The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, and Mr. Kiss and Tell.
Helen Zaltzman (The Allusionist, Answer Me This! and Veronica Mars Investigations) and Helen O’Hara (Empire Podcast and magazine) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Helen Z’s choice Center Stage. Center Stage 2000 teen drama about a group of young dancers from different backgrounds that join a prestigious (fictional) ballet school in New York City. Directed by Nicholas (Madness of King George) Hytner and stars a mix of actors and dancers. Out of the main characters who are dancers, four are professional ballet dancers (Amanda Schull (her debut) Ethan Stiefel, Sascha Radetsky, and Julie Kent), one is a professional figure skater (Ilia Kulik), one had ballet training (Zoe Saldana in her debut also), and two were actors with no ballet training (Susan May Pratt and Shakiem Evans). Body doubles were used for many of the major dance sequences. Peter Gallagher also stars as the company director and choreographer. Center Stage is essentially a high school drama set in a ballet school. Nothing is ambiguous and if you missed anything then it is all summarised - through dance - in the dance finale. The brutal side of ballet - no pizza and bad feet, Mandy Moore and bland boyfriends feature heavily - if that’s your thing then you’ll love it. Scores [supsystic-tables id=214] If it’s not then you’ll probably not enjoy it - this caveat was heavily reflected in the scores with an average of three for recommendability which ends up giving an overall score of 3.34. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist returned after a short vacation and proceeded to meddle in and muddle up everyone's love life, including her own. Can't a heroine be happy once in awhile? Next: "Zoey's Extraordinary Session."On Veronica Mars, at long last, we came to the finale of season 3, "The Bitch Is Back." While not one but two plot points were recycled (sex tapes! Secret societies), we did enjoy seeing Veronica up to her old tricks, smoking out bad guys and exacting revenge. Next: we'll watch Veronica Mars the movie and listen to the two Veronica Mars Investigations podcast episodes about it.
On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist was off, so we took on two episodes of Veronica Mars, season 3: "I Know What You'll Do This Summer" and "Weevils Wobble But They Don't Go Down." Veronica solves two cases-of-the-week and we also hit the plot point Terri's been dreading: A sex tape starring Veronica and ... Piz?!Next week: We close out season 3 with "The Bitch Is Back," and the accompanying episodes of the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast (for this episode, and the whole season); and we cleanse our palate with "Zoey's Extraordinary Double Date."
Off we go to August 2015, to find the first romcom, learn some new names for nipples, and list the crimes committed in the film Overboard. On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, Zoey's powers weighed heavily on her as she tried to help her sister-in-law, Emily, with a serious problem--while her mom was out on the town with Bernadette Peters. In Neptune, it was another case-of-the-week, but it involved a fading rock star played by Paul Rudd, so we'll take it. And we think Keith should let Vinnie Van Lowe have the sheriff's job if he really wants it. Next week, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is off, so we'll watch the next two episodes of Veronica Mars ("I Know What You'll Do Next Summer" and "Weevils Wobble But They Don't Go Down") along with the accompanying episode of the Veronica Mars Investigations podcast, "I Know Weevil's Wobble Tapes."
‘Where do you get your ideas?' It's a common question, asked of all kinds of writers and storytellers – and of musicians, artists, journalists. Their answers typically involve some combination of curiosity, hard work and practice. Often, a simple prompt or idea becomes the seed of something unexpected and engrossing. HALLOWEEN SPECIAL - Part 2! It's been a long-time coming, but Jane has finally made Kurt watch The Haunting of Hill House. In this spooky episode, we discuss how the concept of being 'haunted' is an allegory for the manifestation of familial trauma. On a more technical note, we also discuss how lighting and cinematographic techniques can be used to create a sense of unease and unnaturalness, and how the exploration of character backstories help to push past tropes into complexity.Find us @madeyoulookpod on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, or email jacarandamedia@outlook.com if you want to chatSeries: The Haunting of Hill HouseEpisode: Season 1, Episode 2 "Touch"Rating: 4 EyesWhat are we watching: The Boiler Room and Veronica Mars Investigations (podcasts) & Ad AstraDate recorded: 27 September 2019Thanks to Incompetech for the theme song!Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.Thanks to Incompetech for the theme song!
