Why would anyone want to live forever? Why do we trust Daniel to do anything without military backup? Why is Enrico Colantoni the greatest man in the world? And why can't MK and Courtney have a week that isn't completely unhinged?

Enrico Colantoni (Galaxy Quest, Flashpoint, Veronica Mars) is one of Canada's most successful actors with more than 100 TV and film credits to his name. He joins Tom Power to look back on his career, from his early days as a struggling actor, to getting his first big break playing John Belushi in an episode of “A Current Affair,” to developing his memorable character Mathesar in the movie “Galaxy Quest.” Enrico also talks about his current role on the CBC police procedural drama “Allegiance,” and what makes it feel different from his past roles on other cop shows.
The second season of the slick crime series Allegiance begins January 15 on CBC and CBC Gem. The shot-in-Surrey, B.C., drama stars Supinder Wraich (Sort Of), Enrico Colantoni and Samer Salem. I spoke with all three in Toronto at the CBC Winter Media Launch in December. Wraich plays Sabrina Sohal, a promising rookie police officer who fights to serve her hometown. Rico is the seasoned cop who mentors her past the hurdles of a flawed justice system. In Season Two, Sohal graduates to the Serious Crimes Unit and has six months to prove she's got what it takes to be a detective. She's paired in that task with a more experienced detective, played by series newcomer Salem. All three take part in this chatty podcast episode, taped live at CBC's Broadcast Centre in downtown Toronto. The discussion ranges from immigration and cultural clashes, fellow co-star David Cubitt (whom they all praise) and even which cast member caused the most outtakes.
Nicky Katt is playing modern but also olden time Hitler in a play. Enrico Colantoni is his director, who grapples with what a garbage bag Katt's character is. Julia Roberts interviews Blair Underwood, who is probably shooting "Eight" with Brad Pitt. Catherine Keener is going to leave her husband David Hyde Pearce, who just got fired from a job where he appears to do nothing. And Mary McCormack has to deal with David Duchovney's boner. It's time for some "Full Frontal".

Sometimes we turn into a fanboy and a fangirl for an entire episode...and this is one of those times. Have You Ever Seen #626 has us absolutely loving Galaxy Quest, which is director Dean Parisot's best film and it's also probably the best-ever Star Trek movie. All the characters get terrific arcs, but particularly Tim Allen as the arrogant commander. As great as he is in the leading role, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Enrico Colantoni and especially Sam Rockwell are hilarious throughout too. They play bad actors from a cancelled sci-fi TV show who get to become heroes, as Colantoni and the alien Thermians enlist the humans to battle a great villain (Robin Sachs as Sarris). And the obsessive nerds who worship the stars of their favourite show get to be heroes too. So discover that intense fandom can be what saves your life as we rave and then rave some more about Galaxy Quest. Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's The Penguin, Disney Plus's Agatha All Along, Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, and Netflix's Miss Night & Day. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh parse through all the lessons they learned by sorting through Netflix's latest data dump of consumer viewing on the platform over the first six months of 2024. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. All three gave the nod to Hulu this month thanks to their successful run at this year's Emmy Awards and their exciting fall tv line up, including English Teacher, Only Murders in the Building, and The Secret Lives of Mormon Rights. New Series Spotlight – This month, they are reviewing English Teacher. The series was created by Bryan Jordan Alvarez, who you may know from his popular YouTube videos or his supporting turn on the Will & Grace reboot a few years back. Here, he plays Evan Marquez, a queer, neurotic, and ever-aggrieved English teacher at a high school outside Austin, Texas. The series also stars Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher. Five of the eight episodes of season one have already aired on FX. You can also stream the series on Hulu or, if you have the Disney bundle you can also watch it directly on Disney Plus.

FX cleaned up at the 2024 Emmy Awards, but can they keep the winning streak alive? Could the engine behind Hulu's premium content even be on track to surpass HBO as the de facto home of prestige TV? We're looking at both sides of that equation with a review of the new FX comedy English Teacher and a deep dive into David Zaslav's latest swerve with Max (coming soon to a basic cable package near you!). But wait! There's more: The ABC Presidential Debate brought in big ratings across all the news networks, but did viewers punish CNN for hosting the infamous first debate? Speaking of that Cable News Network: The channel's new leadership continues to undo the legacy of Zaslav's first pick, Chris Licht. That means Brian Stelter's back, baby! The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon becomes the final nail in the coffin for Friday night Late Night, with all the major shows down to 4 new episodes a week. With ratings in a free fall across all the networks what will the future of Late Night look like? (Maybe it's more of an After Midnight style affair.) ———

On the Saturday May 4 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet novelist and writing coach Heidi Reimer. Her front-row seat to the theater world of her debut novel, “The Mother Act,” began two decades ago when she met and married an actor, and her immersion in motherhood began when she adopted a toddler and discovered she was pregnant on the same day. Then, we'll meet photographer-turned-film director, Caitlin Cronenberg. Her new movie “Humane” stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire and Enrico Colantoni is a wild story about a family dinner that erupts into chaos when a father's plan to enlist in the government's new euthanasia program goes sideways.
We finish up Daniel's Central American Adventures and Sam's Outer Space Quest in Evolution Part 2. This is the one episode where we finally see the small, casual intimacy between Jack and Sam that we really should have been seeing all along. Enrico Colantoni as Burke is just the best thing ever. We love him. Why don't Stargates have caller ID? That would be helpful. Annoying from a plot perspective, but helpful for the receiving gate. We're still not entirely sure how ring transporters work, but the scene where the Kull Warrior gets wooshed away in mid-air is just awesome. And thanks to a listener email, we find out whether or not the Stargate could actually exist. And a few more jokes…. TV shows don't just write and produce themselves. That takes showrunners! Two of the best in Canada have been Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern, the husband and wife team behind such hits as Flashpoint, X Company and Transplant.Their latest is the new Wednesday night CBC police drama Allegiance. The series stars Supinder Wraich as promising rookie cop Sabrina Sohal. She's teamed with a savvy police veteran played by Enrico Colantoni, my previous guest on brioux.tv : the podcast. Stephen Lobo also stars as Sabrina's wrongfully accused politician father. On this episode, I'm joined by Mark Ellis, who talks about the importance of casting, writing and setting this series in Surrey, B.C. Ellis also talks about how he really didn't have much of a sense of Canadian identity until his family returned to Canada from England when he was a lad and he started watching The Beachcombers."I thought, okay, this is Canada," says Ellis. "Here we are in a boat with Nick and Relic and we're racing down the sunshine coast... and I thought, well, this is a lovely place." Hear how Mark is bringing that vision up to date now with Allegiance.

As the anniversary of Phoebe's death approaches, Grant is haunted by what happened. We'll also spend some time with comedian Ronny Chieng. You know him as a senior correspondent on "The Daily Show," the star of Ronny Chieng Takes Chinatown, one of the stars of “Crazy Rich Asians” and the blockbuster “M3GAN,” and as one of the most I demand comedians out there. Today we'll talk about why he waited until he was in university to give stand-up comedy a try and why he says, “I'm still trying to figure out if I am funny,” despite selling out theatres across the world.
Of the 137 podcast episodes I've done here over the past four-plus years, the most amazing conversation might be the second one we recorded. That was with one of my favourite actors, Enrico Colantoni. The man has done very well since he left Etobicoke for the Big Apple as a student at the American Academy of the Dramatic Arts. Distinguishing himself there led to memorable roles in "Galaxy Quest," Just Shoot Me, Veronica Mars, Flashpoint, "A.I.", "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" and on and on. We pick up where we left off with this episode as Rico talks about his latest project, playing a well-seasoned police officer mentoring a keen new recruit (played by Supinder Wraich) in the new procedural Allegiance (premiering Wednesday, Feb. 7 on CBC and CBC Gem).Rico throws himself into a conversation the same way he tackles a role. He is 100 per cent all in and, as a result, up goes everybody else's game. We go all over the map as usual, talking hip replacements, his re-teaming with showrunners Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern (the husband and wife team behind Flashpoint) and, of course, Apache Burger. He even shares a story about his late-great Just Shoot Me colleague, George Segal. Please join us.

"Party Down" is a 2009 comedy series that follows a group of struggling Hollywood caterers trying to make it big in the entertainment industry. Despite an amazing cast and being positively reviewed the show didn't gain much traction in the ratings department. As result the show was canceled after only two short seasons. Party Down eventually found its audience after its initial run and became a bit of a cult favorite. This led to the cast returning for a third season in 2023. What went wrong in the shows initial run? Was this show ahead of its time? Did it land on the wrong network? Was it simply just not as good as people say? This week Jackie and Danielle are starting on season 3! And what better way to celebrate not only their third season but also jumping into triple digits of episodes with a super special fangirl packed, Marshmallow approved Veronica Mars episode! You heard that right, grab the remote, get snacks during commercial breaks and hop on over to the UPN/CW/Hulu as they unpack this cultural phenomenon. A long time ago, we used to be friends…. On this episode of the Richard Crouse Show we get to know, all the way from Cornwall in South West England, Jeremy Brown and Jon Cleave, two of the founding members of the sea shanty singing group Fisherman's Friends. They have incredible story of being discovered by a music producer who visited their small fishing village of Port Isaac, and propelling them to stardom. Their recordings of traditional sea shanties have topped the charts and they've played on the main stage of the Glastonbury Festival in front of 100,000 people and for royalty at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Their story has inspired two films, “Fisherman's Friends” and the sequel, which is in theatres now, “Fisherman's Friends: One and All,” starring James Purefoy and now it's a stage show called “Fisherman's Friends: The Musical which has just touched diown at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto after a successful run in the UK. Then, Enrico Colantoni stops by. You know the talented actor from portraying Elliot DiMauro in the sitcom “Just Shoot Me!,” Keith Mars on the television series “Veronica Mars.” On the big screen he has appeared in the films “Galaxy Quest,” “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” “Contagion,” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Today we talk about his latest film, a comedy about four stoners, the self-proclaimed "Vandits", have a bright idea to knock over a senior citizens bingo hall on Christmas Eve. In this segment we talk about the unusual way he paid for theatre school in New York City and how the cast and crew of “Vandits” persevered after all their equipment was stolen the night before they were to start shooting. Finally, we'll meet Elegance Bratton, the film director who turned his story of being a young gay man, who found unexpected strength, camaraderie and support when he joined the Marines, after being rejected by his mother, into a critically acclaimed film called “The Inspection.” It is a classic against-all-odds story that paints a vivid picture of life inside the boot camp, the dehumanization, the violence, but also the brotherhood. The movie carefully builds the world of the boot camp, creating a palette of claustrophobia, brutality and tension that adds layers to the telling of his survival story.

Identity Crisis: Jude starts out the show with an EXTREMELY detailed revenge fantasy, and then expresses a complete lack of interest in Identity Crisis aside from some fun bits and one crystal clear moment of characterization for Finch and Reese. Oh, and Finch apparently invented social media. Don't talk to cops without a lawyer present.Flesh and Blood: Buckle up, Elias is making his move. So I'm supposed to write a blog about our latest episode where we recast Galaxy Quest. But that's incredibly hard when I've got Chappelle's Show playing in the background. I could write about Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver anchoring this meta sci-fi classic, but I'm too busy learning about the time Eddie Murphy's older brother kicked Rick James in the chest. Something, something, Enrico Colantoni absolutely owns this role and you can see the rest of the alien actors following his lead. Whatever, I'm catching up on Wayne Brady doing his best Alonzo Harris impression. Anyone who has been listening lately will appreciate us picking a Sam Rockwell movie where he's almost inconsequential, even though we try to cast him in everything. Although, there are some people whose lives are irrevocably changed by playing a tiny part in an insanely popular cult sci-fi classic. But don't take our word for it. Justin Long and Rainn Wilson make their cinematic debuts, which kind of feels right. What also feels right is the late, great Alan Rickman being a little too convincing as a classically trained actor who resents the fact that they never got the big drama part they were looking for, and ended up in sci-fi, repeating your nauseating catch phrase every day. This movie kicks ass and we try to do it some justice in the recast. Thanks for listening everyone! We appreciate all of you, and we want to hear from you! Find us on twitter @recastingpod, or email us at recastingpod@gmail.com. If you like the podcast, tell a friend. If you LIKE like the podcast, tell 5 friends. Actually, we don't need that qualifier. You don't have to commit to LIKE liking the podcast in order to tell 5 friends. I'm sorry for imposing that on you. Life is hard enough without your favorite podcast forcing you to define your relationship. I'll try to do better next time. Now if you'll excuse me, I will return to my stories of Prince breaking fools down on the basketball court.
You know, sometimes things don't always work out the way you planned them. Sometimes it ends up going to shit, but if you are broadcast masters like us, you just find a way to pump out unbelievable content regardless of the circumstances. The universe gifted us a last minute rescheduling, and we decided to do a Quick Cast. Which leads us to our movie this week, Stigmata. This was pretty clearly Patricia Arquette's best work, and she had some weird chemistry with Gabriel Byrne, which just works somehow. Billy Corgan provides the music (along with some very special friends that we talk about in detail during the pod), and Mike channels his inner holy spirit and crushes the games segment of the show. This movie is about *SPOILER ALERT* a woman who is experiencing all of the afflictions of the Stigmata, and Byrne is a Vatican investigator sent to determine the legitimacy of the claim. Not only is it legit, but it's the most insane case ever recorded, and it points to a giant conspiracy within the church. Jonathan Pryce, Enrico Colantoni, and Dick Latessa all provide great characters within the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy , while Nia Long, Portia de Rossi, and Patrick Muldoon provide a heavy dose of 90's nostalgia. The recast itself may technically count as blasphemy, so this is one you don't want to miss. Thanks for listening, everyone! We're going to be starting up our Roundtable series again this winter, so reach out to us with any suggestions for topics you want us to talk about. We would also love to hear any suggestions for future recasts that you have, or casting picks of your own that you want to share. American Crime Story returns after a triumphant first season with an all-new mid-nineties crime, and Tara Ariano returns to discuss it, and whether, after 20 years, we should accept that sometimes there is no "why." We'll also be discussing whether Sarah's the only one who thinks Édgar Ramirez as Versace looks AND sounds like Enrico Colantoni; if it's appropriate to covet a character's clothing if that character is a spree killer; and the question of The Nose in Penelope Cruz's portrayal of Donatella. In our Cold Case section, Sarah sits down with Chad Boushell -- the unlucky Rob McKernan in the Bride Killa ep we looked at for Episode 39 -- to ask what's the hardest thing about playing the body, and the responsibility actors feel to real victims.
