Sådan lød det fra Hendrik Verwoerd, Sydafrikas premierminister i 1961, der på en pressekonference forsøgte at forklare hvad 'apartheid' er for en størrelse. Det drejer sig om at hjælpe hinanden på grundlag af de forudsætninger man har som race, sagde Verwoerd og tilføjede at 'apartheid' er en positiv adskillelse, således at hver gruppe kan udvikle sig på sine egne præmisser. Verwoerd regnes for 'hovedarkitekten' bag apartheid, men hvad var det for en ideologi, han byggede på? Hvordan tog dette 'gode naboskab' sig ud i virkelighedens verden? As South Africa prepares for the 2024 national and provincial elections, there is widespread speculation about the ruling ANC's prospects for remaining in power. If the ANC fails to maintain its majority, there is speculation about which parties it might consider forming a coalition with. Former ANC Member of Parliament, South African Ambassador to Ireland, and current columnist and political analyst, Melanie Verwoerd, reveals that there is growing talk within the ANC about the possibility of seeking a coalition with the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party. Verwoerd told BizNews the ANC National Executive is, despite the fear-mongering of the DA, not interested in a coalition with the Economic Freedom Fighters. Julius Malema, she says, “is the guy whose party storms onto the stage while the president is talking in parliament. They don't like that kind of chaos and disruption.” Verwoerd said coalitions after 2024 need not be formal, they could be formed to pass money bills. She also commented on a possible IFP Presidency which she said would be “chaos.” According to Verwoerd, South Africans remain remarkably loyal to the ANC, despite their anger. Many continue to vote for the ANC due to the lack of viable alternatives. She stated that if the ANC continues to win, it would serve as a strong indictment against opposition parties.

Melanie is a political columnist and has written a number of books. Her latest book has the intriguing title “Never Waste A Good Hysterectomy” and I spoke to her about the book, her career and her famous surname.

The relief among investors was clear to see as they assessed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s South African cabinet line-up. The slimmed down executive were given the thumbs-up and the retention of the crucial Finance Ministry post to Tito Mboweni, while allowing Pravin Gordhan as Public Enterprises Minister to continue the clean-up of the state owned enterprises calmed the markets. The Rand advanced immediately after the read out of the names and continued its upwards move gaining another 0.4% around midday after the announcement. De Zuid-Afrikaanse schrijfster, journaliste en stand-up comedian Marianne Thamm groeide op in de minder gegoede suburbs van Pretoria tijdens de hoogtijdagen van de Apartheid. Vandaag de dag is ze een uitgesproken feministe en de trotse moeder van twee tieners. In haar boek De ondraaglijke blankheid van het bestaan (in Zuid-Afrika verschenen onder de titel Hitler, Verwoerd, Mandela and Me) beschrijft ze haar leven. 'Geen fantast had het zo gek kunnen verzinnen' schreef Tom Lanoye in het voorwoord.

British prime minister speaks of “winds of change” in Africa. On February 3, 1960, when British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan addressed the Houses of Parliament in South Africa, he said “winds of change” were blowing through the continent. This got a rather chilly response from the white minority rulers of South Africa at the time. After all, he seemed to be suggesting that blacks be allowed to run their own affairs, if not their own countries. Macmillan also spoke of the need to "create a society which respects the rights of individuals – a society in which individual merit, and individual merit alone, is the criterion for a man's advancement, whether political or economic." South Africa’s prime minister, Dr. Verwoerd, responded, "We are the people who brought civilisation to Africa… To do justice in Africa means not only being just to the black man of Africa, but also to the white man of Africa." Although it would be another 30 years before blacks were given the vote and the control of their own country, Macmillan was the first of his power and stature to make such comments.
