Seniwati Zaiton Abdullah, 85 tahun dilamar menjadi pelakon ketika beliau belajar menjahit dan menyulam di Geylang Serai. Suami seniwati Mariani ketika itu, H.M. Rohaizad, adalah yang sering datang ke situ untuk meninjau sesiapa yang dirasakan sesuai untuk dijadikan bintang filem. "Selepas itu, satu demi satu filem ditawarkan kepada saya. Yang bikin saya teruja adalah berlakon dengan nama besar, Tan Sri P. Ramlee. "Saya perlu jalani ujian layar perak bersama Ramlee. Dapat peranan sebagai Tun Teja...ingatkan Hang Tuah suka kita, rupanya Hang Tuah nak kita jadi milik raja!" ceritanya sambil tertawa. Peranan tersebut membawa pada Anugerah Pelakon Pembantu Wanita Terbaik di Pesta Filem Asia Pasifik 1957 di Jepun. Apa yang menggalakkan adalah walaupun kerjaya lakonan Zaiton cuma selama 13 tahun sahaja, ramai yang mengingatinya kerana watak ikonik Zaiton (Jeton) dalam Bujang Lapok; Chombi dalam Ibu Mertuaku; Tun Teja dalam Hang Tuah dan Mahani dalam Anakku Sazali. My guest today is Jasmine Mariani, I discovered Jasmine through a friend who shared her instagram profile with me — Jasmine was seeking a place to share her journey of being diagnosed with cancer and moving through treatment, as well — arriving back into her past life after diagnosis… feeling like she had in a sense “lost” time. What struck me most about Jasmine was her desire to share the rawness of her story — the things she feels like ‘people were not talking about openly' in terms of moving through the process of cancer. At 28 years old, Jasmine was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. This episode, Part I & II is her intimate recollection on this point of time in her life story. Jasmine's perspective on her journey is truly gracious in the most humble of ways, this is one of the most inspiring conversations I have ever had. Jasmine is an architect and interior designer by trade. She recently opened a sustainable floral arrangement studio and is co partner of The Shelter Project an NGO based out of Indonesia developed ‘to support communities displaced by natural disasters —' This is Part II of the episode, if you haven't listened to Part I already I highly recommend you do so now. In this Part II of the interview we talk about; - Jasmine's second round of chemotherpay - The death of her dog, Nana (her soul mate) that would be the event to teach her acceptance in life, a point of view she carries into her journey with cancer - Adopting a Buddhist perspective throughout her adulthood - We touch again on this unlearning and relearning of communication that Jasmine went through as one of her greatest lessons - The toxic positivity (and language) around cancer - Dealing with reintegration into 'normal' life and watching everyone around her continue on with their lives - A great shift in self-awareness - Releasing relationships through her process of having cancer ... and so much more Find all the show notes and extra exclusive content on the;

In this episode, I speak with the poet, critic, and biographer Paul Mariani, professor emeritus at Boston College. We discuss his new book, All that Will be New and his biography of Robert Lowell, The Lost Puritan. We discuss Lowell's life, poetry, and his struggle with the permanent things: religion, marriage, art, family. Given the influence of Hopkins on his early poems, I think this episode pairs well with episode 38 with Nick Ripatrazone. As always, I hope you enjoy our conversation. Paul Mariani is the University Professor of English emeritus at Boston College. He is the author of twenty books, including biographies of William Carlos Williams, John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Hart Crane, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Wallace Stevens. He has published nine volumes of poetry: All That Will New, Ordinary Time, Epitaphs for the Journey, Deaths & Transfigurations, The Great Wheel, Salvage Operations: New & Selected Poems, Prime Mover, Crossing Cocytus, and Timing Devices. He is also the author of the spiritual memoir, Thirty Days: On Retreat with the Exercises of St. Ignatius and The Mystery of It All: The Vocation of Poetry in the Twilight of Modernity. His awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim and the NEA and NEH. In September 2019, he was awarded the inaugural Flannery O'Connor Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Imagination Conference at Loyola University, Chicago. Jennifer Frey is an associate professor of philosophy and Peter and Bonnie McCausland Faculty Fellow at the University of South Carolina. She is also a fellow of the Institute for Human Ecology at the Catholic University of America and the Word on Fire Institute. Prior to joining the philosophy faculty at USC, she was a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago, where she was a member of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts and an affiliated faculty in the philosophy department. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, and her B.A. in Philosophy and Medieval Studies (with a Classics minor) at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. She has published widely on action, virtue, practical reason, and meta-ethics, and has recently co-edited an interdisciplinary volume, Self-Transcendence and Virtue: Perspectives from Philosophy, Theology, and Psychology. Her writing has also been featured in Breaking Ground, First Things, Fare Forward, Image, Law and Liberty, The Point, and USA Today. She lives in Columbia, SC, with her husband, six children, and chickens. You can follow her on Twitter @ jennfrey. Mike Mariani: Moving On with Life After Catastrophe

Shaping Opinion

Author Mike Mariani joins Tim to talk about what he learned about how people move on in their lives after enduring a life-changing trauma or catastrophe. He's the author of the new book called, “What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us: Who we become after tragedy and trauma.” In this episode, Mike uses the famous saying that inspired the title of his book as a launching point to tell a story that doesn't sugar-coat how people respond to adversity, while providing hope and inspiration. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Life_After_Catastrophe_auphonic.mp3 Friedrich Nietzsche was a late 19th Century German philosopher who had a great deal of influence on society at a pivotal time in history. His writings and his voice came along at a time when society itself was undergoing a transformation in both Europe and America, relying less on the agrarian economies of nations, and increasingly on an emerging industrial economy. Leaders and peoples were starting to question the status quo, and Nietzsche offered up some of the answers.  Yet there is one quote of his that has embedded itself into our culture, particularly in America, that is so ubiquitous that it is almost never questioned even to this day.  Nietzsche is the one who said, “What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.” This saying was the inspiration for a new book by Mike Mariani that states, “What doesn't kill us makes us,” but he doesn't finish the sentence. Does he believe it or not? Actually, it's not that simple. Mike has had his own share of troubles in life, things that didn't kill him, and for the longest time, he lived by that mantra, “What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.” But in the past ten years – Mike is only 36 years old now – he sensed that life isn't so black and white. Maybe the issue isn't whether something that doesn't kill us should make us stronger or weaker, just different. That was the starting point for his research and his book. If tragedy and trauma don't make us stronger, for better or worse, how they change us? To imagine the kinds of trauma Mike was thinking of, think of someone who lost the ability to walk, or someone who has been sent to prison for a long time and lost their freedom, or someone with a condition that prevents them from living the life they once knew. Mike asks, how does a person go about reconstructing their existence in the wake of calamity after much of that existence has been irretrievably lost? What do those whose lives have been knocked off their orbits have in common? How do we make sense of and find meaning in a life where suffering and misfortune go uncompensated? Before we talked about the stories or the themes of the book, I wanted to know how he researched it. Who did he talk to? How does he know?

Can you trust your intuition to lead you out of the most difficult circumstances and into a life of joy and fulfilment? Award-winning artist and movement leader Stef Mariani believes you can, having experienced personal tragedy and learning how to move herself from being shut down to playing at the top of her game in just a few years.Stef Mariani won awards as a negotiator and business strategist based in Hawaii, closing over US$100M in real estate deals. She also won Hawaii's Na Hoku Hanohano Award for her album Stay Gold In 2018. Stef has produced live events and attended many high profile ones herself including the Grammys. Her current focus is to grow her international movement of people committed to staying true to themselves despite the worst circumstances such as the financial impact of COVID and the war in Ukraine.Quotes from this episode:"The key with events (and if this is the only thing you do, it will make all the difference) is your mindset. When you walk in, you need to take time to really think about why you're there and who your audience is and why you care about those people.""It's hard to throw a bomb at somebody who you feel connected with, because if I hurt you, I hurt myself. You don't open fire at schools. If you feel connected. You don't throw a grenade. You can't even participate in war, be a soldier if you feel connected. And the fact is we are all connected.""If you care about people, it doesn't matter what you do, you're going to do really well."-Stef MarianiMusic Use My Imagination played with permission from Stef Mariani.Connect with Stef and join Stay Gold for free:Website: www.thestaygoldmovement.comFB Group: StayGoldMovementStef's non-profit for Hawaii-based artists:Website: //staygoldhawaii.comUse My Imagination (No More War) music video:https://youtu.be/pDJu9Wt2BOUConnect with Adelaine:Email: uponarrivalpodcast@gmail.comRecord interviews remotely with Riverside:bit.ly/RecordWithRiversideGet 15% off your subscription with code: AdelaineEdit interviews like a word document with Descript:bit.ly/EditWithDescript

How important is free will in your life? We live our lives day after day, but we rarely stop to think about the power of our own free will. We can choose everything, from the clothes we wear to the job we want or the people we want to have around. Making free choices has become second nature to us, and we rarely think how lucky we are for that. Having free will is a gift, and not everyone has it. This is why we should not take our freedoms for granted. We get to fight for free will for ourselves and our communities. Take a moment to honor this blessing today, my friends. Today's guest, Stef Mariani, will tell us how she got free of a religious cult, found freedom in her music career, and decided to create the Stay Gold Movement. Stef Mariani is a singer-songwriter. She started an internationally inclusive movement founded in Hawaii based on her recent Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning album, Stay Gold. The Stay Gold movement's goal is to help people live a life of meaning and purpose by learning and implementing the eight pillars of the state gold principle. Stef recently released her newest single, called Use My Imagination. This song is a part of her latest project under the Stay Gold movement. Stef shares with over 1000 members from Hawaii to Kenya to Europe how to stay gold or true to themselves in an ever-changing world. Her outstanding results caught the attention of Huffington Post's Deepak Chopra and other various national media outlets. Stef also currently sits on the Forbes musician coalition. However, often you have the unique challenge of having to communicate a new idea that customers aren't aware of yet. Sometimes it's a new type of business or even a new industry. Olivia shared how she's worked to do just that with Curbio. “Home improvement sucks right now.” That's why there's Curbio! That said, even when customers learn what it is (the nation's leading fix-it-first, pay-when-you-sell home improvement solution for those selling homes), they still don't believe it. “People are always saying it's too good to be true.” Storytelling and the voice of the customer. Olivia's work focuses heavily on storytelling and the voice of the customer. All of this came together on Curbio's recent “Do we have to?” campaign. What brand has made Olivia smile recently? Olivia shared her amazing experiences with Outdoor Voices, an Austin-based athleisure brand.
