On the plane to the mother land, Ali instantly recognizes the significance of this moment. Upon arrival, he instantly wins over the people of Zaire, pitting them against Foreman automatically. Known as ‘Mama Africa,' Makeba was not just a celebrated musician, but also a fierce advocate for human rights and freedom. Her music inspired change, and her courage in standing against apartheid made her an icon for both feminine grace and unwavering defiance. Today's theme challenges us to reflect on how we balance our feminine energy with our inner fighter. Do you find strength in embracing both sides of yourself? How can we honor our power while remaining connected to our essence?

In this episode of "Long Story Short," the host, Liwa, takes us on a captivating journey through the life and legacy of the iconic South African singer and activist, Miriam Makeba, known as Mama Africa. Makeba's music not only captivated audiences worldwide but was also a powerful tool for activism and protest against apartheid in South Africa.Miriam Makeba was born in 1932 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and grew up in the vibrant township of Sophiatown, a hub of culture and resistance against apartheid. Her talent was discovered by record producer Spokes Mashiyane, and she began her professional career with the Cuban Brothers, an all-male harmony group. Her career took off when she toured the United States with Harry Belafonte in the late 1950s, who mentored her as a protege. Makeba's music blended traditional African rhythms with jazz, pop, and soul influences, and she sang in multiple languages, including Xhosa, Zulu, Swahili, English, and French. One of her most famous songs, "Pata Pata," released in 1967, became an international hit and showcased her unique sound and style.Makeba's activism was an integral part of her music. She used her platform to advocate for social justice and raise awareness about the oppression faced by black South Africans under apartheid. Her outspokenness led to the South African government banning her music and revoking her passport in 1960, but she persisted in her fight against apartheid.Makeba testified at the United Nations twice, the second time in support of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners held in South Africa. She also performed at several anti-apartheid concerts, including the historic 1988 Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Many of Makeba's songs addressed the struggles and injustices faced by black South Africans, such as "Soweto Blues," a response to the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Her activism and powerful voice earned her international recognition, including the prestigious Grammy Award for her album "An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba" and the Dag Hammarskjold Peace Prize.Makeba's legacy as a pioneering African musician and activist continues to inspire generations. The United Nations declared her birthday, March 4, as "Miriam Makeba Day" in honor of her contributions to music and human rights.Join Liwa as she takes you through the extraordinary life of Miriam Makeba, a true musical legend and a fearless advocate for justice and equality in South Africa. Miriam Makeba is a legendary icon who left an indelible mark on the world of music, civil rights, and African culture. She's known as "Mama Africa." Miriam comes from very humble beginnings. Her mom actually went to jail shortly after she was born due to making illegal beer. Miriam literally started off her life in jail. Thankfully, as a child she quickly discovered her mesmerizing voice and began her musical journey. She debuted with the famous Manhattan Brothers and grew her career to groundbreaking international success with "Pata Pata" and "The Click Song. " She would blend traditional African melodies with elements of jazz, soul, and folk music. Her music is heard today on commercials, TikToks, and even that trendy Bill Hader dancing Instagram reel.  But Miriam Makeba was more than just a remarkable singer; she was a fearless advocate for social justice. As apartheid tightened its grip on South Africa, Miriam used her fame as a platform to speak out against the injustice and racial discrimination faced by her people. She played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the apartheid regime on the global stage, bringing the struggles of South Africans to the attention of the world. She was exiled from South Africa, but spent years as a global ambassador for the anti-apartheid movement while in the United States. She collaborated with activists like Harry Belafonte and met influential figures like President John F. Kennedy, all while using her music to champion the cause of freedom and equality. In this episode, we are in conversation with the architect, writer, and Professor of Architecture at Yale, Keller Easterling. Her books include Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space (Verso, 2014); Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005); and her latest Medium Design: Knowing How to Work on the World, to which we dedicate special attention to in this episode.I think Easterling's project boils down to how architecture and design can actually intervene and/or contribute to the cultural change around social justice and ecological crises; through thinking about, and ‘knowing-how' to work the systems at play. So designing within interplay; rather than the total compliance and submission on behalf of the architectural profession is what she seeks. She redirects our attention to the spatial dimension of how things are arranged, be it politically, financially, or socially. Episode Notes & Linkshttp://kellereasterling.com/ In Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space, Keller Easterling reveals the nexus of emerging governmental and corporate forces buried within the concrete and fiber-optics of our modern habitat. https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/enduring-innocence http://kellereasterling.com/books/extrastatecraft-the-power-of-infrastructure-spaceIn Enduring Innocence, Keller Easterling tells the stories of outlaw "spatial products"—resorts, information technology campuses, retail chains, golf courses, ports, and other hybrid spaces that exist outside normal constituencies and jurisdictions—in difficult political situations around the world. https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/enduring-innocenceMedium Design by Keller Easterling looks not to new technologies for innovation but rather to sophisticated relationships between emergent and incumbent technologies. It does not try to eliminate problems but rather put them together in productive combinations. And it offers forms of activism for modulating power and temperament in organisations of all kinds. https://www.versobooks.com/books/3245-medium-designhttp://kellereasterling.com/books/medium-design-knowing-how-to-work-on-the-worldElements of Architecture was the title of the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale curated by Rem Koolhaas. https://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/2014/elements-architectureBeatriz Colomina is an architecture historian, theorist, and curator.Mark Wigley is an architect and author. shutterstock Ecology is the study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and the environment around them. It is an important branch of study, exploring how animals, plants, the land, climate and humans are interconnected. But a study of 13 leading journals in ecology over 75 years has shown that in this field, women researchers are seriously under-represented. So are countries in the global South – even those with excellent scientists. Kenya and South Africa were the only African countries represented among the authors in these journals. And only 11% of the authors were women. This is important because the world cannot afford to neglect the perspectives and experiences of women and global South researchers in addressing the global climate and environmental crisis. A more balanced view is needed to inform practical interventions. Bea Maas, a lecturer at the department of botany and biodiversity research at the Universität Wien, is one of the study's authors. In today's episode of Pasha, she discusses this imbalance in ecology research and what to do about it. People in the scientific community should start by assessing themselves and their institutions, to look for bias and under-representation. When foreign scientists work in the global South, they should actively collaborate with local scientists and local experts. Photo: “Concept of ecology. Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab leader Illah Nourbakhsh, & Raqueeb Bey, exec. dir. of Black Urban Gardeners & Farmers of Pittsburgh  join host & Endowments Pres. Grant Oliphant as they dive into the fascinating backstory of the new & innovative Center for Shared Prosperity.  One of the great anomalies of modern American society is the disconnect between the intellectual capital, innovation, and wealth creation associated with its leading research universities and the persistent challenges and inequality confronting the communities in which those centers of innovation reside. There is a better way – one in which universities focus their research and problem-solving expertise on those challenges that surrounding communities identify as most urgent. It’s a way that includes deep and long-term partnerships between community representatives, universities and philanthropy. Funded by The Heinz Endowments with its largest-ever single grant and guided by a committee of community leaders, the newly launched Center for Shared Prosperity at Carnegie Mellon University is creating a template for that better way.  Illah is the K&L Gates Professor of Ethics and Computational Technologies at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, the author of “Robot Futures,” and co-author of “AI and Humanity,” both from MIT Press.  In addition to heading Black Urban Gardeners and Farmers of Pittsburgh, Raqueeb also leads Mama Africa’s Green Scouts, a grassroots organization that works with black youth in underserved communities to encourage awareness of green education, environmental sustainability and social justice. Illah and Raqueeb share what they believe the Center for Shared Prosperity could mean for both the university and surrounding communities, and how other cities across the nation with major research institutions may use the initiative as a guide for systemic change. “I see this as the opportunity for all of us to come together in a genuine, long-term way to make  permanent change in the structure of the system,” says Raqueeb. Illah agrees: “I believe that we can be pioneers for justice together.” “We Can Be” is hosted by Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments, Josh Franzos and Tim Murray. Theme music by Josh Slifkin; incidental music by Giuseppe Capolupa. Guest inquiries can be made to Scott Roller at sroller@heinz.org.

The world is full of beautiful locations, delicious food, and histories that shape entire cultures. While we can all dream of visiting exotic locations, money and time are very real restraints. Which is a bummer. How do we experience new places and different lifestyles if we can't afford to do so? That's where food comes in. Cathy Tshilombo-Lokemba was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was surrounded by the spices and flavors of the country. But her path was a winding one, and she ended up traveling and living all over the world. With stops in Europe, New York City, Dallas, Phoenix, Cathy, known to many as Mama Africa, planted roots in Toole, Utah. While many wouldn't consider Utah a mecca of diversity, Mama Africa only saw an opportunity. A chance to bring Africa to Utahns, and help share her culture and her food. What started out as a goal to make her mother proud evolved into a mission: to show people how real, delicious African food tasted. Like many food entrepreneurs in Utah, Mama Africa first began sharing her cooking at the local farmer's markets, where the smell of her food caught many a nose's attention. Mama Africa's food caught on like wildfire, and her hot and savory spices became a constant source of mouth-watering.Join us as we sit down with Mama Africa and walk through her amazing and inspiring story. Full of laughter, wit, and talent, Mama Africa's food and the story truly make for a one-of-a-kind experience. And with her new restaurant and market located at 3460 S Redwood Road Ste. 5A, Africa is closer than ever. —This episode was sponsored by…90.9FM KRCL — Community Connection and Music DiscoveryVive Juicery — A Utah-based cold-pressed juiceryThe Chocolate Conspiracy — A project in pure, raw, honey-sweetened chocolate.Blue Copper Coffee — Specialty coffee hand-roasted in Salt Lake City, with a coffee room at 179 W 900 S.The Yelp Elite Squad — Utah's five-star fan club of all things local.—This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted by Chase Murdock and produced by Ryan Samanka.
