In our Workout of the Week we talk self-massage. What you can do to help clean up and prep the muscles to aid recovery before your next training session. In One Step Ahead Mikki talks to us about whey protein. The Geek-Out - Mirinda Carfrae ran a 2:50 marathon at Kona this year. Do the physiological differences between men and women mean that women will eventually go faster than men at ultra-distance events? Our Hot Property Interview this week is with Kiwi Professional Triathlete and video host Callum Millward. Callum has been a frequent podium topper on the Ironman 70.3 scene starting his career in ITU racing before switching to long course in 2012. This year he's racked up multiple respectable finishes: fourth at Ironman 70.3 Boulder, third at Ironman 70.3 Raleigh and Ironman 70.3 Vineman, and second at Wildflower. He's now planning to go long with Ironman Melbourne on the race calendar in March 2015. Callum also hosts a popular YouTube series called 'Cupcakes with Cal' in which he interviews and pokes fun at other pro triathletes...whilst eating cupcakes. In our 5 Minute Focus we talk to Cliff Harvey of Holistic Performance Nutrition about 'Generation Ucan' - a healthy, natural, gluten-free innovation in carbohydrate nutrition. Generation Ucan (or SuperStarch) is a complex carbohydrate (derived from non-GMO corn) that uniquely stabilizes blood sugar and causes virtually no reaction from the fat-storage hormone insulin - a revolutionary fuel being used for energy, sports, and fitness. How To Know If A Supplement Is Safe - Amie asks a follow-up question from #245 @ 00:16:32 I know you ultimately recommend bitter melon extract over the cissus. However, if one wanted to try could you recommend a brand and dosage? ~ In my response to Amie, I recommend , and also the previous podcast episode we did about Also, , , and . How To Eat For A Half Ironman - Shelly says @ 00:26:39 She is doing Vineman 70.3 Triathlon in 2 weeks and has been following a low-carb diet and doesn't know what to do for fueling during the race. She has Generation UCan, Energy28 and MAP but she doesn't know what to do in terms of solids. Almond butter? Or is that too much fat? She needs some direction since most of her friends are not fat adapted. ~ In my response to Shelly, I mention and also . What To Do About Multiple Allergies - Allergy says @ 00:35:17 She has allergies to most things in nature (pollen, rag weed, dust, mold). She tried allergy shots, muscle testing and acupressure therapy and acupuncture, and all the over the counter remedies as well. What do you think about allergies? Are they over diagnosed? And what do you think of these therapies and how they affect people? ~ In my response to Allergy, I recommend an . I also recommend the podcast episode about During our discussion, Dr. Minkoff and I discuss the following resources: -Keeping kids away from potential digestive irritants or foods that could trigger an autoimmune reaction, especially gluten (a very good book I recommend on this topic is ““). - to asses whether kids are low in HCL, and if they are, getting them on an -Red blood cell test for magnesium (look for a naturopathic physician in your area who may be able to order this) and use of a if deficiency is found. -Use of and . -Considering use of a in a child who was raised on formula and not breastmilk. -Use of and . -Looking into allergy elimination techniques (i.e. ) to identify and eliminate potential allergenic foods that kids may be eating. -Educating yourself on the realities and alternatives to immunizations and vaccinations. The website Dr. Minkoff recommends is: How Much Superstarch Should You Use? - Trevor says @ 00:45:20 He went to a Bob Seebohar seminar this past Thursday (promoted by UCAN). Bob was adamant that the recommended servings of 1 per hour was more than enough (even when Trevor mentioned that you, Ben, typically recommended double that per hour) and Bob said that would only be neccessary pre-race (Bob's not a fan of other additives such as X2, MAP). Bob also suggests barely putting any water on it so you can make paste and eat it, which seems counter intuitive to the modality. Trevor's first 70.3 was yesterday. He nursed 2 servings the hour leading up to the swim then only had 2-3 servings on the bike. About 10-15 miles into the bike his quads were basically locking up on him and felt like they were glycogen depleted already. He's not a ketogenic person but he does eat low carb, super-high fat. He experimented with some on-course fuels during the run and one GU Chomp actually gave him a solid burst that lasted a good half hour or so. He hadn't consumed that much sugar at one time in over a year. Is Bob wrong? Did Trevor screw himself by cutting his dosage in half from what you recommend? Running With A Weighted Vest - Matthew says @ 00:56:19 Is switching from Triathlon to Ultra-marathons (signed up for a 50 and wants to do a 100 miler). Is wondering about using a weighted vest. He heard they can make a 1 hour run feel like a 3 hour run. Would that be a good thing to use when training for an ultra? ~ In my response, I recommend What To Do About Runner's Toe - Longtoe says @ 01:01:47 His second toe (the toe next to his big toe) is longer than his big toe and is causes him pain (when running). Is there anything he can do about that? How Women Can Naturally Increase Fertility - Jennifer says @ 01:09:01 She has recently being diagnosed with estrogen dominance, secondary to low progesterone. She is trying to get pregnant and hasn't been able to conceive (hasn't has a period in years). She has stopped exercising and is eating "a lot". Do you have any thoughts on what they can do for fertility? Is this state reversible? ~ In my response, I recommend the I also recommend the following estrogen dominance formula for enhancing fertility: -Consider WITH or -Do all the recommended and - – 1 packet per day - - take per recommendations - - 4 caps per day -) - 200mg/day -- And don't forget to go to -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Audio Question from Paul: He just raced Vineman. He knows that you, Ben, have been racing without electrolytes. Do you think that when you are not taking in electrolytes during the race that you will not be secreting salt like everyone else? Audio Question from Alberto: 8 weeks ago he sprained his ankle badly. Has a tear, bone concussion and some strained ligaments. Started swimming and riding last week but still can't run and… he is doing Kona! He needs to recover fast! ~ In my response to Alberto, I recommend: , , and . Also take a look at the injury recovery section of . Audio Question from Ben: Digestion and elimination. He is a martial artist and a weight lifter. Was a high carb paleo isn't anymore. Has incorporated grains, sprouts, etc… His morning bowel movements are explosive (it isn't diarrhea but the urge to go comes on quickly and there is a feeling of he'd be in trouble if he weren't at home) and make a pile vs. a log. He usually poops one more time in the afternoon around 3-4pm. Has heard logs are better than piles. Wants to know how to firm up his stool. He has no problems like stomach aches, gas, loud stomach, etc. He feels fine all the time! He thinks he does all the so-called "right things" and yet still is having poorly formed poo! PS: He has never eaten breakfast. He eats lunch and dinner so he gets all his calories in two meals (about 3000 calories daily). ~ In my response, I mention this , eliminating as much as possible, and also the book: "". Brock mentions Scientific American's . Horacio writes: Hi Ben, odd question coming: I happen to travel on planes very frequently so I spend a lot of hours in airports and there are no gyms there (perhaps a biz opportunity?). What good workouts can be done when I have a good 2-3 hours of waiting for my next flight? (while avoiding being deported for public disorder). ~ In my response to Horatio, I recommend and the . I also mention any of my and . Anderson asks: I was listening to some old episodes and I remember that you said in one of them that we have to eat every 1.5 - 3 hours to have the "thermogenic effect" of food. But on the Fat Loss Secrets Seminar you said we don't need to have a lot of snacks, elevate the blood sugar all the time, there's no evidence of benefits of this practice. So, how many meals should I eat? I don't know if that changes something but I have skinny genetics and want to gain muscle. Of course I know I need to lift some weights. ~ In my response, I mention the article . Giles says: I have found an online health supplement company here in the UK, , and wanted to get your take on the "super smoothie mix" the guy is touting. The reviews for it are great and plenty of, pardon the terminology, tree hugger types seem to rave about it. Could I ask your opinion of whether this could be a good product to include in my diet. Bert asks: Your comments on diet soda have me motivated to drop my litre to two litre a day habit... don't think I can go straight to water. I have seen a few of these new "water additives" like Mio. Let me add this variable: I need the solution to be easy. If it isn't easy, I most likely won't make the lifestyle transition; which sounds odd as I used to weight 310 lbs and could not walk to the end of the street but am now a 3:20 marathon runner. The key for me was that I made one "easy" change at a time. Cameron asks: You answered a question a while ago about other fats that would be good to include in her diet by discussing the smoke point, saturation level and propensity for oxidation during cooking and/or for colder uses. One thing struck me though. You said to avoid fats that are "completely unsaturated" and "don't have any of the hydrogens" like canola, corn and sunflower oil. My understanding is that these fatty acids have omega 3's, 6's, 9's but no more than three double bonds per fatty acid. That means that all of the rest of the hydrogens (26 out of 30) are still there. Considering that, when I look at the composition of fatty acids in canola, safflower and sunflower the composition of specific monounsaturated fatty acids are different but not substantially. Is it possible that for cold applications each of these oils are perfectly fine? ~ In my response I mention these videos: How canola oil is made: How butter is made Emily asks:I was wondering if you were familiar with "healing touch". I have heard there has been some research but I'm not sure how legitimate the studies are. Also, I struggle with eating enough during long runs, marathons or longer. I typically don't eat gels during training and try to supplement during races. They don't upset my stomach I just don't like eating while running. Have any recommendations on liquids or mental techniques to push myself to eat enough. I've noticed that I do sometimes get irritable towards the end of long runs, which I've heard you mention can be a sign of low blood sugar. We had a great pair of Oakley transition sunglasses that Rolland sent through for us to review. We decided that we would have a competition to give them away. We’ll pick three finalist and then we can all have a vote for the winner. Entries close at the end of August. It’s time to create! Topic of the week When I interviewed Macca in Roth he came up with the idea of having a metal system for Ironman races. So for example a 13 hour athlete would get a bronze, 11 hours silver and so on. Do you think this is a good idea? Give us your reasons if you do or don’t. Plus if you think it’s a good idea how should it work. Click here to add your comment. Age grouper of the week Alan Hanley sent through this weeks age grouper. Lee Jackson, who’s getting married in a few weeks, had a great race in Germany. He managed to do a time of 9:18. The reason he got age grouper was because his goal was to beat my time in Roth. He managed to do it by one minute. Well done Lee, you are our age grouper of the week! Website of the week Here’s a site that Matthew sent through: have you guys ever been over to http://weightweenies.starbike.com/ It's a site devoted to high-end cycling etc. but a lot of time you can get a lot of good information about equipment and some of the latest and greatest tech that has not been released. what i also like about it is that a lot of the contributors are from outside the us and have a real passion for the sport of cycling. Matthew James Flynn sent us through the first club website: HEAT-- Hartford Extended Area Triathletes http://www.ctheat.org it's a good club, we have at least one Kona qualifier so far. High 5 David Liversidge gave us this weeks high 5 on how to improve your swimming. Thanks for that David. 1) If you are not a good swimmer - get a coach or at least someone to look at your stroke. 2) Distance per stroke - By this I mean MAXIMIZE your stroke. 3) Work on drills every session. 4) Swim with your hips. 5) Don't cross the center line. 6) Don't kick to much.
