Some suggest that, since individual lifts or short-duration efforts don't rely heavily on glycogen, carb intake might not be critical for strength athletes. If glycogen depletion isn't a pressing issue, could athletes thrive on lower-carb diets without sacrificing performance? Or could there be overlooked benefits to having greater carbohydrate availablily in those sessions? In strength sports and resistance training, do carbohydrates play an important role or not? Are carbohydrates really necessary for resistance training? How does training volume, intensity and goals impact the carbohydrate requirement? In this episode, Dr. Cliff Harvey and Dr. Eric Helms offer their perspectives on this interesting and practically important issue. Weightlifting came before powerlifting, but did you know weightlifting wasn't exactly the first barbell sport? Or rather, did you know that the first iteration of weightlifting was VERY different than what we see today in the Olympics? The history of weightlifting is fascinating, and in this episode of Iron Culture Drs Conor Heffernan and Cliff Harvey are back to share their experiences with, and the history of, All Around Lifting, the original barbell sport. With literally hundreds of potential lifts to compete in, All Around Lifters are barbell generalists rather than specialists, and both strong and versatile. Modern All Around meets are very similar to the original lifting competitions from the early 19th century before weightlifting centralised around the snatch, clean and jerk and clean and press (and eventually just the snatch and clean and jerk), and before modern strongman, powerlifting or CrossFit existed. While you may know Cliff Harvey as a nutrition researcher, he is also a former All Around world champion weightlifter and amateur historian. He shares his experience while Conor goes into the fascinating tale of how weightlifting began, and how modern All Around Lifting recaptures it. 00:00 Omar? Dr Cliff Harvey is a father of two and a partner of one. He is a Clinical Nutritionist, author, educator, and all-round weightlifter. He holds a PhD from AUT and has published numerous academic papers. I have known Cliff for a decade and have always enjoyed his approach. He has a curious scientific mind and I think that shows in his approach to problem solving and the questions he is willing to ask. In this episode, we talk about his upbringing and how he got interested in training and nutrition. We discuss his sporting background and how he found all-round weightlifting. We also learn about his unorthodox path to his PhD and how various mentors have impacted his direction in life. Was great to catch up with Cliff! Rejuvenated Women: Impeccable Health for High Performing Women
Is pain driving your desire for lifestyle change? Most of us only change something when there is pain associated with what we have been doing. But according to my podcast guest today, if this is your only driver, no changes you make will be sustainable. You're also missing some essential keys that will make the difference in your success. I'm joined by the founder of the internationally known MetaProject Olly Wood, who is a former personal trainer who became fascinated by what drives behavioral change. On this episode we cover the components that drive behavior change that go far beyond nutrition and exercise and get into the specifics of weight loss, hormones, body betrayal, intermittent fasting and so much more for high achieving women. Oliver got his start in the trenches of the health world as a PT in a big box gym. After 7 years of working with primarily high-performing business owners he saw the extent to which stress, inflammation, and a lack of focus on recovery was ruining any progress they were making, and, worse still, was leaving them burnt out and unproductive mentally as well. Rather than simply encouraging high-performers to do more and work harder, Olly has worked with world-leading experts in exercise, nutrition, biochemistry, and coaching, such as Brian Walsh, The Poliquin Group, Kassem Hanson, Ben Pukulski, Linh Trinh, and Cliff Harvey, among others, to develop a more holistic, scientific, and sustainable approach to health and performance. If you're in that place of deep introspection after this episode, I'd also like to invite you to connect with me for our weekly newsletter on LinkedIn or through email. I did deeper into topics like this in the written form every Wednesday. That includes: The most important principles in resistance training (progressive overload etc.) How to use strength training for weight loss The ideal number of sets, reps and frequency for better results Why you shouldn't lift until you can't lift anymore, and what a better option is A 101 in hypertrophy (putting on muscle) Under-eating - how it's a much bigger issue than people realise and how he saw its impact on people with IBS Why the recommended daily protein intake is way less than it should be The importance of residual movement outside the gym The great thing about Cliff's take on all this is he has the scientific knowledge to explain it, but it's also understandable and usable for everyday people. He knows the studies and he's seen the results of so many different things - now it's accessible! In today's episode we are joined by Cliff Harvey to answer the question: what do COVID adverse events and long COVID have in common? We take a dive into the research that Cliff has been conducting around immune dysregulation and modulation and the similarities between the immune response to the virus and virus analogue. We look at key nutrient interactions including vitamin D, preformed vitamin A and selenium and consider the role that broad nutrient deficiencies have on our susceptibility. We then briefly discuss some new research around the role of Lion's mane mushroom – a very exciting area with more to come in future episodes. Let's dive in. Focus, Fuel, and Nourishing The Body and Mind for Peak Performance Focus, Fuel, and Nourishing The Body and Mind for Peak Performance with The Meta Project Founder Olly Wood How can busy professionals integrate healthy habits into their lives? How does a healthy body help prevent burnout? Why does most health advice get it so wrong? Why is calorie counting not the full picture? Why are diets so short-term focused? These are just a few of the questions explored and covered in today's episode of The Go Reflect Yourself Podcast. My guest, Olly Wood, a peak performance health expert and founder of The Meta Project, gives us insight into how stress and inflammation affect our bodies, energy, and whole life. Because super peak performers typically just push through and are so busy putting their heads down, just plowing through the things they want to achieve, their health suffers. Their focus and energy suffer and their stress rise, leading to many additional problems. There are answers and it doesn't have to be too complicated…stay tuned. Stay tuned to this episode of The Go Reflect Yourself Podcast. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- To truly have the life you want; the career, house, family, relationships, car, lifestyle, wealth, freedom, you name it….you must learn what success is and where it comes from, starting with how you think. Welcome to The Go Reflect Yourself Podcast, where we provide brain-based strategies for your success; in all key areas of your life, including wealth, health, business, relationships, etc. Go Reflect Yourself was created after years of being a corporate employee and an independent business owner. Throughout all of those years, I learned that no matter what level of success people had achieved, and specifically financial success, typically they were still missing something, missing true joy, well-being, and fulfillment. I've spent a career helping business owners, leaders, and entrepreneurs learn the skills needed to discover their inner brilliance, and that's how Go Reflect Yourself was born…my goal is to help as many as possible learn the necessary skills to achieve ultimate fulfillment and well-being, becoming you are meant to be. Your host, Heather J. Crider, CEO of Digital Architect Media, A High-performance strategist, neurocoach, author, and speaker, talks today with peak performance health expert and founder of The Meta Project, Olly Wood. What you will learn from today's episode. Identifying the origin of stress Understanding and classifying three main types of stress How to adjust to changing biology Understanding the factors of healthy digestion How inflammation shows up The understanding of how hormones factor into your overall state of being How your body responds to hormonal and environmental changes The effects of toxins on our bodies Simple strategies to help with your energy and overall brain health The importance of brain health and productivity More about Olly Wood As the Founder of The Meta Project, Olly Wood is known for his ability to see the big picture. Rather than simply encouraging high-performers to do more and work harder, Olly has worked with world leading experts in exercise, nutrition, biochemistry, and coaching, such as Brian Walsh, The Poliquin Group, Kassem Hanson, Ben Pukulski, Linh Trinh, and Cliff Harvey, among others, to develop a more holistic, scientific, and sustainable approach to health and performance. Olly came from a small town in NZ and was brought up on homegrown real food. As he grew up and saw how the food industry changed, he realized how many issues were brought back to the lack of nutritional focus and how much food alone can rebuild the body and health. Olly got his start in the trenches of the health world as a PT in a big box gym. After 7 years of working with primarily high-performing business owners, he saw the extent to which stress, inflammation, and a lack of focus on recovery was ruining any progress they were making. Olly refocuses his Peak Performers on the power of nutrition alongside his team of experts in areas of mental health, nutrition, biochemistry & training with a guiding philosophy that you can only push as hard as you recover. Olly's goal is to help professionals in the pursuit of growth and improvement, to make sure they don't leave their body and energy behind, and with this framework can change the way people fuel and nourish their bodies for good. themetaproject.co olly@themetaproject.co fb/olly.wood.902 ig/ollywoodnz/ __________ To learn more about Heather Crider visit www.heatherjcrider.com What You THINK Matters. In part 2 of our current discussion with Cliff Harvey we take a deep dive into the COVID-19 vaccine landscape. As you have already learned, Cliff and I have somewhat opposing views on this element of the pandemic, but have both taken great pride in continuing to remain not only colleagues but friends, and to foster pragmatic and compassionate discussions on what can be a very heated and polarizing topic. We explore our societal contract, continue to discuss Cliff's working hypothesis surrounding long COVID and adverse events, current issues with exemptions, vaccine mandates, and so much more. My hope is that you find this episode to be a breath of fresh air and so helpful leading into Christmas Day and many of the interactions you will have. In today's episode we are joined by Cliff Harvey to explore the current landscape with regards to COVID-19 – what positive opportunities the last one to two years has provided us, or, alternatively, what the other direction, of fear, has created. We explore the failings of public health, a system that rewards consumerism and materialism and what needs to change to create health, and mostly importantly, happiness. Cliff shares with us some upcoming research, and the hypothesis that specific nutrient deficiencies involved with “long COVID” may also help us understand why some experienced adverse events, and others do not. We also start to explore how a difference of opinion is possible and that two opposing truths may exist at the same time, so please, keep this in mind as you tune in today. You know those podcasts with nutritionists that focus on one thing, and if you’re not interested in it then it’s just boring? This is not one of those! Dr. Cliff Harvey and Bella Marinkovich are nutritionists that focus on holistic health - and this includes so much more than you’d think. They have amazing tips on the stuff you’d expect: experimenting with different diets, fasting and supplements, but they also have some incredible knowledge on edible weeds, dealing with adrenal fatigue, the growing problem of under-eating and even the little-known benefits of microdosing hallucinogens. Whatever your interests, there is something in this one for you. It’s a light-hearted, fun and informative deep dive that really does offer something for everyone.
In this week's episode, Mikki answers your questions with Dr Cliff Harvey and Bella Marinkovich related to health and nutrition in the first of a four part series. I’ve been taking it before a work out, do I still need protein powder after? Does it go of your weight how much you have? 2. Debi Hi Mikki, I've never been a coffee drinker, but appreciate the benefits of a caffeine hit, esp prework out. any suggestions for getting the hit from other sources please?

In today's episode we are joined by Cliff Harvey to explore two publications, firstly, ‘A plant-based, low-fat diet decreases ad libitum energy intake compared to an animal-based, ketogenic diet: An inpatient randomized controlled trial' and secondly ‘Effects of a Ketogenic Diet on Muscle Fatigue in Healthy, Young, Normal-Weight Women: A Randomized Controlled Feeding Trial'. We discuss the unprovable proposition that there is one best diet for everyone, and consider the bookend phenomena - that maybe extremes are not the answer for anyone. Cliff is a wealth of knowledge and I hope you will enjoy the dissection of these studies and consider the role of subject size, statistics and cross over designed studies, as well as findings being replicated by future studies. Let's dive in. Visit https://www.stephlowe.com/podcasts/286 for show notes, episode transcripts and more.

Distances vary depending on venue, but will generally consist of 200m swim 10km cycle and 2km run. Racing will also be streamed live from their website.
