Putting them in the best position for success on race day and beyond.”   “We are continuously looking into new ways to enhance our athlete's journey and training experience, and we are excited to find a partner in TriDot who is a proven industry leader in training technology that benefits both coaches and athletes,” said Andrew Messick, President and CEO for The IRONMAN Group. “Through the tools and resources available, this partnership will help allow our athletes take the guess work out of race preparation so that they can have the successful and rewarding race day they deserve.”   TriDot also provides extensive ongoing support to its global coach community which includes IRONMAN legends like Mark Allen (6x IRONMAN World Champion), Michellie Jones (IRONMAN World Champion & Olympic Silver Medalist), and Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae (3x IRONMAN World Champion).   "I'm so excited about this partnership. With TriDot, my athletes are consistently getting fitter and faster. I wouldn't coach without it," says Mirinda Carfrae. Mark Allen adds, "On the surface TriDot looks simple.  Underneath that hood is the best training you'll find in triathlon. Ever. Anywhere."   Strava introduces messaging   The problem with Strava messaging is not Strava messaging, it's an environment where women don't feel safe exercising alone or existing online   Coaching Tip: How (and Why) to Test?   This week was a "Test Week" in my training plan. Test weeks are built into the Maintaining and Development Phases of an effective training plan. Tests should be excluded during Race Specific Training where the focus moves to rehearsing and executing at the fitness levels attained during the Development Phase.   The phase cycle looks like 4 weeks of build followed by a Test week. The 4-week build progressively increases the stress load. The Test Week reduces the overall load of the training that week, but inserting each swim, bike and run tests into the week. This also makes the Test week a Recovery week.   Monday - regular swim workout Tuesday - FTP Test (FTP Study: 20-Minute Power / 5-Minute Power) Wednesday - 5K Run Test (10 minute warmup; 5K for time same course every time; 10-20 minute cooldown) Thursday - easy bike Friday - Swim CSS CSS or critical swim speed is the pace at which you swim a 1500 time trial. This is quite simple but an effective way to prepare for long races. Warmup, priming 200, 400 for time, 10 minute recovery, 200 for time CSS (m/sec) = 200 / (time taken for 400m – time taken for 200m)   Benefits of Testing Keeps your training zones current so you are training the correct energy zones Regular testing familiarizes you with the discomfort and pain of pushing high intensity Familiar with all your paces and the relative RPE Helps execute your race pacing See change over time (sometimes that's progress, sometimes not, good to know)   What if you don't know or don't do Training above your body's real zones can leave you overtrained, burned out or injured Training below your body's real zones can leave you under trained, underperformance, or injury on race day for exceeding your abilities Stagnate if adaptions start to happen but training zones are not updated to set up the next progression of development Won't really know where that limit is and how to press to your performance limit in races   Video: What happened to Heather Jackson? As one chapter closes, a new one opens. After 15 years as a professional triathlete, Heather Jackson decided to challenge herself in new ways, build a fresh community, and push her own and other's expectations of what is humanly possible.   In June, Heather tackled the Unbound Gravel 200, often hailed as the "Super Bowl" of gravel bike racing, and the iconic Western States Endurance Run, the world's oldest 100-mile trail race. Facing these demanding events with just a two-week gap between them, the question looms: how will Heather approach her most ambitious goal yet?   #Wahooligan #WahooFrontiers #HeatherJackson Wahoo Frontiers: Heather Jackson

She's a professional triathlete who illustrates the mantra, "Success comes to those who endure just one moment longer."   Rinny was one of the first interviews I did for this podcast three and a half years ago, in episode 6, February 2020.   Mirinda has recently made the tough decision to retire, and we'll be discussing this significant shift in her life, how she came to that decision, and what the process was like. We will explore her most memorable moments, discuss the highs and lows, and get a glimpse into some of her most epic workouts.   We'll discuss the evolution of the sport, how technology has changed the game, and her thoughts on the future of triathlon. And, of course, what life looks like for her after professional racing.   She's a great friend, and I'm excited to get this chance to catch up.   Originally from Australia, and now residing in Boulder, CO Mirinda is a one of the world's most successful triathletes. Her 2007 70.3 World Championships win secured her ticket to the Ironman World Championships in Kona. In 2009 she set a course run record and finished 2nd in her first Kona appearance. She continued her dominance and went on to win three Ironman World Championships in 2010, 2013, and 2014. Her 2013 win included the third fastest marathon of the day including the men's field. Her blistering run course record from 2014 still stands today (2:50:26).   Mirinda is a threat at every race she enters with over 50 wins at major events throughout the world. Her Ironman 70.3 World Championship title and three Ironman World Titles and seven podium finishes in Kona in the span of a decade marks her as one the of the greatest triathletes of all time.   Growing up in Queensland, Australia, Mirinda Carfrae, widely known as “Rinny”, was a sporty child, with basketball her primary focus. At 5' 3”, however, her true athletic potential remained untapped until a high school triathlon coach noticed her speed on the court and suggested she give multisport a go. At the age of 19 she competed in her first triathlon and shortly thereafter–with no prior background in swimming, cycling or running–made the 2001 Australian Junior Elite Team.   Rinny represented Australia at the ITU Triathlon World Championships from 2001-2005, twice earning silver medals (2002 & 2003) before turning her attention to long distance racing. A victory at the Nice Long Course Triathlon (2004) and a silver medal at the ITU Long Course World Championship (2005) were early indicators that endurance was her forte; a third-place podium finish (2006) and ultimately a world title at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (2007) confirmed Rinny as one of the top talents on the non-draft racing circuit.   That victory was pivotal, not only as a precursor to Rinny's numerous half iron-distance wins to that date, but also to punch her first ever entry ticket to the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, an honor she postponed until 2009. That October, as a wide-eyed Ironman rookie, Rinny stepped off the plane onto the Big Island and was quickly swept up in the race week frenzy, heralded as the next great hope for the title at triathlon's “holy grail” despite having yet to prove her prowess at the distance.   But prove it she did, using her finely-honed foot speed to post a course run record and secure second place. The following year, Rinny's constant drive to improve resulted in her first title as Ironman World Champion. In the years that followed, despite race day struggles that might derail a lesser athlete, Rinny never strayed from the podium steps in Kona, earning second (2011) and third (2012) before regaining her crown in 2013. In so doing she struck fear in the hearts of competitors both male and female, posting the third fastest marathon overall (2:50:38), a new run record enroute to scoring the women's Kona course record in 8:52:14.   2014 was a year filled with exciting new adventures for Rinny. Her winter wedding (December 2013) to fellow triathlete and Ironman Champion Timothy O'Donnell marked the start of a thrilling new chapter in her personal life. Professionally, the reigning Ironman World Champion expanded her horizons to Europe, claiming victory against a highly competitive field at Germany's iconic iron-distance race, Challenge Roth, and confirming that all eyes will be on her yet again in Kona.   Links Be sure and check out bennettendurance.com Find Greg on social media: Twitter @GregBennett1 Instagram @GregBennettWorld   And follow Mirinda Carfrae: website: https://www.mirindacarfrae.com/ twitter: https://twitter.com/mirindacarfrae?lang=en instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mirindacarfrae/?hl=en facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rinnytriathlon/   Timestamps 9:06 - Winning Kona 3 times firmly places Mirinda at the top of the sport of Triathlon. This year, Herring will return to defend her title.   In our preview below you can find everything you need to know, from start times to streaming information, plus a preview of the professional women's field.   Start time and how to watch live The race takes place on Sunday 22 May 2022.   The Pro race will start at 0650 local time (Eastern). That corresponds to 1150 in the UK and 1250 CET.   The race will be shown live, with the event the fourth of 12 IRONMAN 70.3 events to be broadcast in 2023 in a partnership with Outside TV. I haven't raced that much in the past 18 months so it's going to be good practice to just maybe improve some things on a different course and in different conditions. It can be joyful. It can be heartbreaking. It can be empowering.   Just ask Golden-based lawyer Megan Hottman (aka The Cyclist-Lawyer), who is one of six bicyclists featured in The Engine Inside, the newest cycling film coming out this summer by Anthill Films.   Narrated by Phil Ligget, The Engine Inside shares the stories of bicyclists from all over the globe who reveal the unique power of the bicycle to change lives and build a better world. “I feel incredibly honored to be featured as one of the six people in this film, when I know that Anthill Films had a long list of amazing humans with amazing stories to choose from,” said Hottman.   Hottman is well-known in the cycling community for her dedication to making Colorado a better place for bicyclists. Her tireless work on behalf of all bicyclists has resulted in numerous, and hard-fought positive outcomes for the cycling community.   She notably represented the family of U.S. Masters road race champion (and friend and former teammate) Gwen Inglis who was killed by a driver in 2021 and was awarded an unprecedented $353 million verdict in a civil lawsuit against the driver.   The Engine Inside offers a rare glimpse into how Hottman experiences the world as a bicyclist- both in public and private life.   Specifically, the film captures Hottman at her most vulnerable- at a ghost bike dedication for Inglis shortly after she was struck and killed by a driver. Or, when Hottman herself is hit by a pickup truck driver and suffers serious injuries.   Hottman said, “One part I am happiest about is the inclusion of Gwen's story in my section- and that now she'll be known and honored globally everywhere the film is shown. It's one small way to keep her name and legacy alive and shared.”   “I'm not afraid to show my emotions -on film or off- as we're all in this human experience together and it's hard. To pretend otherwise does our experiences a disservice. I am who I am, real and raw, and at times emotional. I'm glad the film captures that range of emotions not just in my story but in other character stories as well,” she continued.   While a bicycle can have a positive impact on physical and mental health, it can also be utilized as a powerful tool for social change, as Hottman demonstrates.   By deconstructing the lived experiences of bicyclists, The Engine Inside urges audiences to consider what can be accomplished by simply riding a bike. What change can we make every time we get on the saddle?   Transcending geographical borders, economic circumstances, and language barriers, the transformative power of the bicycle to those who use it in their daily lives is inspiring.   “We were looking for really well rounded people that had an amazing story to tell, and that each had a connection to the bicycle from a different perspective,” explained The Engine Inside director Darcy Wittenburg.   “Although there is some overlap with some of them, they each represent some of the major ways bicycles help humanity from mental health to transportation and everything in between,” she continued.   The narratives shared by The Engine Inside are as diverse as its six participants. Their stories confront a culture that revolves around cars, and encompass global issues that range from climate change, more livable cities, socio-economic inequality, and indigenous trauma.   Despite often formidable personal and systematic obstacles to overcome, each bicyclist used the bicycle as a catalyst for hope and agency.   Threading their powerful stories into a cohesive narrative was also a challenge. “There's so many ways to look at this as it was a challenging project all around! Narrowing down the vast world of cycling into an 80-minute film was probably the first and ongoing challenge for us,” said Wittenburg.   “The main motivation was to focus the film on personal stories that many people can relate to. It was a tricky balance keeping the topic of cycling in the background so the characters' connection to cycling could shine through,” she added.   Sponsored by Hottman Law Office, The Engine Inside Golden premiere will take place 5:30 to 8 PM on June 29 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased here. Proceeds will benefit Bike JeffCo.   “We're really excited to be part of sharing a film that has the potential to change how bicyclists are perceived! The bicycle is truly a vehicle for making change, both in individuals and communities,” said Bike Jeffco Chair, Jan Stevenson.   “From the time you are a new rider, you learn how to be resilient, how to navigate, how to solve problems. You build confidence in your ability to get things done. These stories take that confidence and show how to elevate these abilities to bigger solutions to bigger problems,” she continued.   Stevenson remarked how fitting it was that The Engine Inside's overarching theme intersects with the mission of Bike Jeffco. “We want to share the joy of biking! The shared global stories really highlight the wide range of positive impacts that simply riding a bike and having access to bikes, can bring to a community,” she said. “Biking is fun, exhilarating, and hard work all at once! The sense of freedom and empowerment that comes with the ability to control where and when we go places is huge,” concluded Stevenson.   Bike Jeffco will be holding a Meet and Greet at Colorado Tap House on June 10 from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's time to say goodbye to Witsup. The thing is, I don't want to write “it's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye … “ because my heart has done so much heavy lifting the last few weeks, if not months, as I have come to the incredibly tough decision to close down WITSUP and move on. I want to say that I'm finally in a space that it's with a light and happy heart that I can close this chapter, be excited about the next one and truly celebrate all of the awesomeness that WITSUP has achieved over a decade. From day one, WITSUP was a fight for improving the media landscape and the community for women in triathlon and sport, and we achieved so much in this space. But, for me, I now need to move on and find what lights my fire again. We decided to give WITSUP a send off via a podcast, so if you want to join us for an emotional trip down memory lane, we asked some of our faves to help share some stories. Hot tip: Don't edit your own finale podcast - it was brutal, but a beautiful thing. Thanks to Linsey Corbin, Belinda Granger, Mirinda Carfrae, Laura Siddall, Jordan Blanco, Meredith Kessler, Caroline Steffen, Rachel Joyce and Lizzy Blatchford. So what's next? I'm not entirely sure, but I know I'll dive in with the passion and drive I had when we launched WITSUP. And stay tuned, maybe the podcast will be back but will just be slightly different. Who knows. But firstly, and most importantly, I'm going to change the batteries in Frankie's toy that I've been telling her I'll do for weeks, steal a few extra cuddles, and probably have a gin. Thank you everyone so so much for all of your support over the years. It's been a hell of a ride.

In Episode #92: The Things You Always Wanted to Know About Sunscreen, But Were Afraid to Ask , I interviewed Dr. Nic Martens about the same sunblock that Ironman World Champions Craig Alexander and Mirinda Carfrae use. In today's episode, Nic is back, specifically to talk about how certain types of sunscreen can inhibit body cooling, and how sunscreen can block pores. Nic discusses the formulation called "Scape Sunblock", which is available at http://www.scapelabs.com. You'll get Dr. Marten's formulation sent straight to you. ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -Click here to donate $1 to keep this podcast going! -BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle is now just $1 for a 14 Day Sneak Peek! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Melanie asks: I need advice on how to reduce estrogen dominance. I'm not interested (at least right now) in using a progesterone cream. I'd like to reduce estrogen naturally. Which foods will help reduce and which foods will increase the problem? I avoid soy like the plague and I eat a mostly organic, whole foods diet. I exercise (maybe not enough) and I try to avoid drinking from plastic and avoid parabens in cosmetics. Also, I read that high fat diet should be avoided. Does this apply to healthy fats? I eat lots of fats, but the good ones (love nuts and seeds). Any advice is appreciated since PMS derails my exercise and healthy eating. Joy asks: I'm doing my 1st Sprint Triathlon in July. I own a stationary bike and was wondering if and or what the big difference is between using an indoor trainer or a stationary bike? Was thinking of buying an indoor trainer but didn't know if I should spend the money when I Do own a SB. Chris asks: Do you have any advice for general Achilles health?  I've had to modify a lot of the hill training simply because after I do the hills my Achilles will ache.  I've also noticed (all the sudden) that at distances greater than 13-14 miles I start getting achilles pain. Suzanne asks: I saw that you were taking Phenocane as a COX2 inhibitor. In your opinion how would you compare this to Saligesic or White Willow stem bark for pain management? And for inflammation comparing Boswellia and Proteolytic enzymes (and of course fish oils -omega 3's)? I know that everyone is different and you have to be willing to be your own test dummy sometimes, but it's helpful to gain insight from others. Also, do you recommend a specific high quality supplement company for Phenocane? Brian asks: I noticed a lot of pre workout supplements have 1,3 dimethylamylamine is this a safe ? I currently take Jack3d with the following ingredients: Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, Creatine Monohydrate, Beta Alanine, Caffeine, 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (Geranium [Stem]), Schizandrol A Rich asks: What are your thoughts on the supplements: Juice Plus & Mona Vie from a general health point of view? I have been taken these two supplements for awhile and as a new listener I am thinking about maybe switching to or at least adding the Living Fuel Supergreens to my diet. Jack asks: I'm 17 years old, and for as long as I can remember I've had very shaky hands. Usually not a big deal, but I'm a competitive rock climber and going into the Army, which both require steady hands. I've been to many doctors with little success. Any diet or supplementation advice that might help? I eat pretty healthy, especially for my age, but my diet still isn't perfect. I've been trying Natural Calm Magnesium for a little while, but no success yet. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
