Today I'm joined on the show by Don Phin, speaker, advisor, and mental fitness coach for executives. Don Phin has been a California employment practices attorney since 1983. He litigated cases for 17 years, figured out how ridiculous it all was, and decided to help employees and companies avoid destructive dramas. In 2002 Don launched his business HR That Works which he sold to ThinkHR in 2014. After two years as a VP on the ThinkHR executive team, Don left as planned to begin his newest work on his most recent program, Great HR. Don has written 6 books on the workplace, created dozens of training programs, and presented to hundreds of CEO, HR, and insurance groups. His goal is to help companies build powerful employment relationships that grow careers and the bottom line. His book, 'The 40/40 Solution: Mastering Emotional Energy in Leadership and Sales' is 'the solution to ending painful and destructive dramas, whether in the boardroom, coaching session, sales meeting, at home, or in conversations with yourself. Unlike most emotional intelligence books that focus on thinking your way through emotional problems, this book helps you learn how to feel your way through them. So that you can feel good about yourself afterward.' Don has created 10 courses for LinkedIn Learning. He recently finished recording and producing the LinkedIn Learning program on Transferable Skills. LinkedIn has asked him to do a new program about Building a Skills-Based Organization.  In a wide-ranging discussion, Don and I talked about: Transitioning from law attorney to the HR world. Don has presented over 600 times -two-thirds of which have been to Vistage CEO groups - this has created a unique opportunity to understand the needs & wants of top leaders.  How to run an HR hotline with 3500 clients by yourself! The decision to sell your business and move on. Using white labeling to add extra value through your consulting service. Don's book, 'The 40/40 Solution - Mastering Emotional Energy in Leadership and Sales'? How the LinkedIn learning programs started. And much more! Thanks, Don! Office Hours with The Practical Prof®... and Friends!

In today's episode, The Practical Prof®, Dr. Santo D. Marabella talks with his friend (and former student), Landon Eckles, about the healthy food company he and his wife, Kat, started.Landon Eckles found himself at a crossroads in life. After spending five years in sales and management in the pharmaceutical industry in his early career, Landon moved into a Managing Partner role for Rose Rock Group, a global investment management firm specializing in Asia specific projects, in 2012.  Although this career was exciting, the weeks of international travel required for the position was not conducive to a healthy and balanced family life he had often envisioned - especially with his wife, Kat, at home with 4 children (at the time, now 5 children).  In 2014, while chatting about life on their family ski boat with their children and other family members, Kat and Landon officially decided to change their life's course by quitting their jobs, moving from Pennsylvania, and opening up an organic juice bar. Within a year, they opened their flagship Clean Juice store in Huntersville, NC and the rest is organic history. Currently, there are over 100 Clean Juice locations open across the country with many more in active development. Additionally, in 2020, Landon completed the acquisition of a non-toxic nail and beauty bar and rebranded the company to Freecoat nails. The first franchises have been awarded and several stores are set to open in 2021. Landon puts his faith first and is inspired daily by entrepreneurship, leadership, business, and team management. In late 2020, Landon was named to one of the Most Admired CEOs by the Charlotte Business Journal and is highly sought after as a public speaker.  He is also an active member of the Charlotte, NC area Vistage CEO group, his family's church in Elevation Lake Norman, and spends the rest of his time chasing his five young children. Landon graduated from Moravian College with a B.A. in Business Administration in 2007.Support the show (https://paypal.me/MarabellaLLC?locale.x=en_US)

Leo is back on the road again. Today he's in Cinncinati, Ohio where he's been addressing some Vistage CEO groups. We catch up to discuss a variety of things on our mind and realize we're producing our "Seinfeld" episode...because today's show doesn't really have a specific theme. Our guest today, Mark Taylor (https://MarkTaylor.NYC/), shares what members of his Vistage CEO groups did to avoid mistakes and take the actions necessary to survive, and sometimes thrive, in an everchanging post-lockdown world where no one knows what the "new normal" will look like. Mark is a Master Chair in Vistage NYC, a peer advisory group and the second-largest Vistage Chair in the world, where he coaches and facilitates 7 peer advisory groups in New York City. He is an executive coach to CEOs, a TEDx Speaker, and was founder, CEO, and a leader in multiple businesses over 4 decades. We spoke about how a peer advisory group differs from just having a coach and how it differs from having a business operating system like Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) that I help leadership teams implement. 169: Elisa Spain—How To Create A Post-Career Life With Meaning

Learn how to re-think your life looking forward! I have known Elisa Spain for a long time. Having presented to a number of her Vistage groups, I'm deeply familiar with her particularly effective approach to helping people and their organizations change. As she has watched her members craft the next stages in their careers—selling their businesses, retiring from leadership positions, coping with transitions—she has changed too, shifting her focus to help them see their lives through a fresh lens. Her approach, grounded in successful executive coaching, leadership development and even from her own life experiences, has worked exceptionally well. Can others benefit from her insights? Definitely! In this podcast, you'll hear more about her approach, how it works, and how it might work for you. Listen in to my conversation with Elisa and hopefully you'll begin to see how her ideas could help you re-think your own life, leading up to or after that great (anticipated? dreaded?) “retirement” day. In these modern times, we have added almost two decades to our lives. But, we have not done such a good job of planning for those extra twenty years. And they come and go swiftly. Don’t waste them. The three most important forces facing people as they look forward in their lives: 1. A lack of focus. They used to have a daily routine and often now they don't. 2. A lack of purpose. Their careers and families previously defined their purpose in life. Without work and with their children now grown with lives of their own, how can they re-craft a purpose and give their days meaning? 3. A lack of community. We are humans and thrive with others around us. When we leave the workplace full of people who helped us define ourselves and shared our duties and our accomplishments, we flounder looking for others who we can likewise share the same experiences and stories. Sitting in Starbucks or McDonalds looking for someone to chat with just isn't the same. More about Elisa Spain Elisa’s commitment to executive development is reflected in her leadership agenda, “Inspiring Excellence, One Person at a Time.” She has served as an executive in a Fortune 500 Company, owned her own business, and successfully guided accomplished leaders of small and midsized companies. This varied experience allows her to see business and leadership from multiple points of view and tailor her coaching accordingly. Her clients are included in Inc. 5000, Crain’s Fast 50, Chicago Tribune’s Top 100 Workplaces and Crain’s Largest Privately Held Companies, having achieved these prestigious rankings during the time they worked with her. A Vistage International member since 2006, Elisa led five peer advisory boards for several years, then in 2012 became a Vistage Master Chair. In both 2013 and 2014, she earned Vistage's Star Award, ranking her in the top 2% of Vistage chairs worldwide. Today, in addition to her private coaching, she leads a high-performing Vistage CEO group.  Elisa is a member of the Board of Trustees of the City of Evanston Firefighters’ Pension Fund and a member of the Advisory Board for the Independence Equity I, LP Venture Fund. She earned her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management.  To contact Elisa Email: elisa@elisaspain.com  Mobile: 312.421.1813 Website: www.elisaspain.com  LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/elisakspain  Twitter: twitter.com/elisakspain   More about leadership and planning ahead for your future  Blog: Who Says You Have To Retire? 114 From Dream to Success - Dave Nelsen URL: http://www.julieannsullivan.com/dave-nelsen/ Summary How do you take a dream and make it a reality.  How do you start a company with knowledge and no money and create one of the best companies in Pennsylvania? Today I’m talking with serial entrepreneur and award-winning speaker, Dave Nelson. We’re going to be exploring a company that Dave started back in 1998 and eventually ended up selling. When I asked Dave what employee engagement means to him, he said, “People passionately pursuing something they believe in while learning from each other, making themselves more valuable professionally (at the company and in their future careers).” You’ll learn how Dave put these words into practice at his company and how you can do it as well. Dave’s bio: Dave Nelson is President of the Dialog Consulting Group. He speaks to more than 100 Vistage CEO and Key Executive groups each year about 1) Social Media for Business or 2) Doubling Business and Personal Productivity - 49 Apps You Can't Live Without. He also speaks to many industry associations and corporate groups on these topics. Dave was recognized as the Vistage 2010 & 2012 Impact Speaker and 2011 Best Speaker of the Year (#1 rating among 1,500+ speakers. About Dave’s company: Dialog Consulting Group LLC helps businesses enhance the conversations with their most important internal and external customers using proven social networking, social media, and internet communication tools. Principal Dave Nelsen personally works with more than 500 CEOs (as part of the Vistage International network) every year to help them improve their companies' sales, marketing, and even internal communications. You’ll discover: The history of Dave’s company, how they attracted top-notch software engineers, and why they won so many awards. Why they established a “ROWE” company--a results-only work environment. Why a leader should focus on motivating, delegating, and empowering rather than providing all the answers. The value of “flipping the pyramid” by seeing the CEO as a person who clears the barriers and gives people the resources to get one what they need to get done. Why Dave’s company paid 30-50% higher salaries than their competition for A-list software engineers.
