Alexandria (Lexi) Lutz is the Senior Corporate Counsel at Nordstrom, where she advises the company on legal matters related to privacy, cybersecurity, and AI. Prior to Nordstrom, Lexi worked for a large national hotel brand and an international food service company. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the US and Europe and holds the Charlotte Business Journal award for Outstanding Corporate Counsel in a large company. In this episode… 19 states have passed privacy laws, fundamentally altering how companies collect, share, and sell consumer data. And, as consumers become more aware of their privacy rights and how companies and their third-party vendors handle their data, retailers are at the forefront adapting their privacy programs, due diligence processes, and third-party contractual agreements to meet compliance requirements and maintain customer trust. What's more, the new SEC cyber rules place even more security requirements on retailers' relationships with third-party vendors, further complicating expectations. How can retailers navigate this complex regulatory landscape while providing the best experiences for their customers? Adapting privacy programs to evolving regulations is an intricate process requiring a company to evaluate its operations, size, and resources. No matter the circumstances, it's crucial to maintain control over consumer information and ensure all third-party vendor contracts are up to date and transparent. And as retailers incorporate generative AI into their online and in-store shopping experiences, they should take extra steps to ensure personalization, efficiency, and protection are not lost. In this week's episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels chat with Alexandria (Lexi) Lutz, the Senior Corporate Counsel at Nordstrom, how retailers can navigate privacy challenges, leverage AI, and maintain consumer trust in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. Lexi highlights how these regulations — including the SEC cyber rules — impact everything from third-party vendor due diligence and contractual requirements to in-house privacy programs and consumer data sharing and selling. She also discusses the implications of generative AI in retail, maintaining that it should enhance the shopping experience rather than replace human input.

In the fifth part of this six-part series on Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes back guest and good friend Charlie Workmon, President and CEO of Riverstone Logistics. In this episode, Charlie W discusses making the move to take over Riverstone Logistics full time with his full focus and effort. He discusses the transition as well as asking Charlie M to serve as his formal mentor in 2021. They discuss the mutually beneficial mentorship meetings that they held every two weeks, which included a formal agenda and walking through the influential Keith J. Cunningham book together, "The Road Less Stupid: Advice from the Chairman of the Board." Charlie W talked about reflecting on the phrase: Know the game you're playing. As Charlie W began to embrace the practice of "Thinking Time" that he took from Cunningham's book, he began to see clearly that Riverstone would be a people-centric and a client-centric platform for loving people well. And not to be the biggest or the best but just to be on the journey and improve a little bit each day. This belief would eventually be infused into the Company's purpose to love, serve, and improve. In 2021, Charlie W also came to the realization that the Company needed to be well capitalized in order to be able to run further faster. This realization would eventually lead him to facilitating a transaction and to bring in a sponsor (i.e., a group of investors) who believed in the vision and to come help them take the Company to a completely different level in a way that's meant to love people. Charlie W cited the connection that he made with Harold Baron, the former CEO of Nolan Transportation, and the key leader behind the strategic money and group of private investors who would invest in RLX. Harold is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors for RLX. Charlie W reflected on the day that transaction closed in mid October 2021 and the gravity of that transaction. He knew that they had put the Company in a really good position for the future, and that this was setting the stage to not just survive but to flourish with open hands. The stage had been set to have rapid growth with strong financial backing. Riverstone Logistics has seen impressive growth with revenues increasing from $13M in 2020, tripling to $42M in 2021, then doubling to $85M in 2022, more than doubling again in 2023 to $191M, and projected to reach $300M in 2024. RLX has been recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in Charlotte by the Charlotte Business Journal for the past three years, and they completed their first acquisition late last year. Charlie W says that RLX today is a sunrise company who's best days are ahead of us. Their operations reach across 31 states and three countries with 650 Extra Milers ("Extra Milers" being the term given to RLX's full-time employees). RLX is a multi-modal logistics company with a successful Final Mile division as well as a growing brokerage division. Their big customers are Lowe's, The Home Depot, IKEA, HD Supply, Crate & Barrel, Ashley Store licensees, and GE Appliances. Charlie W explains that they are playing the part of a company that is set to do business differently. He says that they have a "Field of Dreams" mindset where they bring key people in ahead of the need while waiting to see if their client would also join the company. A mindset of "If you build it, they will come." And, Charlie W says that they strive to over serve their clients, that they're structured to serve and love them well, that they have a transparent cost model, and that they work with their clients to share costs and help rein them in. And he says that they focus on being open hands, being transparent and reliable, and enroll them on the front end as to what is a fair margin for their services. Charlie W unpacks the inspiration behind the company's Purpose statement "to use our God-given talents and opportunities to love our neighbors, serve our communities and improve our industry," which he and the management team crafted in late 2021. And then Charlie W also walks through the seven Core Beliefs of Riverstone Logistics: - Go the Extra Mile - Run through the Storm - Canoe the Mountains - Win the Right Way - Pencils Have Erasers - Mutual Prosperity - Profit Fuels Purpose Book mentioned: The Road Less Stupid: Advice from the Chairman of the Board - Keith Cunningham - https://www.amazon.com/Road-Less-Stupid-Keith-Cunningham/dp/0984659269 RLX Purpose & Core Beliefs: https://rlx.us/purpose/ Listen to part one of this conversation, Family Business to Logistics Leader: How Charlie Workmon Got Started: https://youtu.be/2dtnhUNHwLs Listen to part two of this conversation, Parenthood, Prayer, and Perspective Fuel Purpose for Charlie Workmon: https://youtu.be/aqYuV1qQokk Listen to part three of this conversation, Broad River's 2015 Bold Reset: Turning Challenges into Opportunities with Charlie Workmon: https://youtu.be/1AW0WwZaC4A Listen to part four of this conversation, Purpose-Driven Leadership in Retail Operations with Charlie Workmon: https://youtu.be/1AW0WwZaC4A This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/nS3gzJAjF0s Visit https://www.storiesfromtheriver.com for more episodes. Craft beer is more than just a beverage, it's a culture driver. Each brewery has its own personality that's expressed through product and place, be it a neighborhood watering hole or concert venue or the place to play cornhole with your kids while you enjoy a pint. Resident Culture in Charlotte, NC, founded in 2017 by Amanda and Phillip McLamb, has a modern, welcoming style, in beer and design and the brewery gathering spaces, and it's quickly become one of the hottest breweries in the country. It's already received accolades that include “Top 10 Best New Breweries in the World” in 2018, one of VinePair's "25 Best Breweries in the Country" in 2022, and that same year, Amanda was the recipient of The VinePair 50 and The Charlotte Business Journal's 40 Under 40. When I'm in Charlotte and walk into either location, it's evident that there is something special happening at Resident Culture, and the brewing of seriously delicious beer is just the beginning.

Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Jordan Schindler. Jordan is changing the game and leading and inventing a whole new category of clothing, Healthware. He is the founder and CEO of Nufabrix, the #1 fastest growing company in the region as named by Charlotte Business Journal, the Deloitte Fast 500 #2 Fastest Growing Pharmaceutical Company in North America, and INC. 5000 #50 Fastest Growing Company in America. If that's not enough, Jordan was also a 2021 EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist. I love seeing entrepreneurs break through and create entirely new markets, true blue oceans and that is what Jordan is doing with Healthware. I'm excited for him to share his journey and lessons he's learned on how to build a whole new market and succeed. www.Nufabrix.com Jordan has been an entrepreneur since he was a kid doing all kinds of things in Tucson, Arizona. He took a trip with his parents to China where he came across an MP3 player market and convinced his parents to let him buy 10 and bring them back to sell on eBay. This turned into a passion project in early High School. He went to school in Seattle and after working around the area moved to North Carolina founding Nufabrix. Tell us about the product and what you are doing with it and how you are creating new markets… He started Nufabrix to solve a personal problem. He had bad acne in college and learned about the link between your pillow case and bad skin where as you sleep dirt and oil builds up clogging pores. The dermatologist recommended to wash his pillow case 2-3 times per week which seemed a little ridiculous. It got him thinking about how it may be possible to deliver medication through fabrics with their skin touchpoint. With this, the idea for Nufabrix was born. The idea that instead of having to take a pill or put on a patch, what if you just had to get dressed in the morning and your clothing delivered a controlled release of medication or nutritional supplements, was intriguing and possible. At 7-minute market, Jordan talks more about the product line and its possibilities. How do you get medication or supplements into the fabrics? It is like a transdermal patch. They took an active ingredient and invented a way to embed it into yarn. It can last through a number of washes and then the fabrics can be recycled. You grew tremendously during the pandemic, what happened to cause this grow and how have you kept it going? They found a niche to help with PPE and facemasks in the pandemic. They converted one of their machines to make facemasks and had the facility to test and meet requirements onsite. They were one of the only suppliers that could meet demand on the timelines needed. In fact, the US Govt sent 3 Blackhawk helicopters to their facility to pick up 250,000 masks. They ended up being one of top 5 biggest producers of masks in the country with 6 employees! What lessons did you take from the experience? “Next man up.” You never know when you can fill a need and your ability to meet a need quickly is where you can outcompete. The power of being willing to innovate. It was also a great lesson in making a decision and then taking action when an opportunity presents itself. It was also finding a way to help that leads to opportunity. At the 17 min mark, we have a discussion about how we found ways to succeed in our businesses during the pandemic. What's your advice to go from idea to action and execution? Swim to the next buoy. Even if you take one small action, it can make a big difference. You do this enough and the world looks a lot different. There is something to be said about having some ignorance going into an idea. If you don't know how hard it is, you are more likely to give it a shot and succeed. Focus on the things that are really going to make the most difference. What are the 1-2 or 3 things that if you just did those make the most difference in moving the needle. At the 29 min mark, we talk about Stoicism and focusing on only what we can control. Talk to us about raising money and what is like to keep up with the growth… They have taken a few rounds. A decent investment came from the Department of Defense. They went out and found the right individuals to help accelerate growth like family offices, angels, etc. in areas like pro-sports teams and former Walmart execs, etc. that had the knowledge and experience and can help them. It is important to stay true to what matters and build a business that can scale. If you need to take on investment to do so, do it, but do it smart and in a calculated way. Anything you learned from securing investors that others should know? Treat an investor like a customer. Investors are consumers like anyone else and if they can themselves consuming your product, they are more likely to invest. Open communication is also very important. Don't be afraid to overcommunicate. Best advice for an entrepreneur just starting out? Learn and don't re-invent the wheel. Get a mentor or advisor. Most everything you want to do or the challenges you have are not new and others have gone through them. Learn from them. Groups like Entrepreneur's Organization are helpful as well. Best Quote: “Next man up.” You never know when you can fill a need and your ability to meet a need quickly is where you can outcompete. Jordan's Misfit 3: Think of business like a conveyor belt of problems, challenges, and opportunities that keep coming at you. Pick up each challenge or problem or opportunity and put it on the conveyor belt. Each time you do this, you make progress. All you can control is your reaction and your response. Don't focus on things you cannot change or have an impact on. As your company grows, you role must change, so take time regularly to assess what your role should be to ensure the company is on the right path. WINGS for Growth presents "Showing Up as A Leader" with Ghazale Johnston, former Managing Director of Accenture, and now the Founder and Principal of Joon Solutions. There was a pivotal moment in Ghazale's career when she realized there was a second chapter to her story and she wanted to do something different; thereafter, she became the COO for a startup called DayMaker. She says, being from an immigrant family, meant that you do not have social capital the way that people do; you know that no one will ever owe you anything, so you have to keep trying your best every time and get it right on your own. Being a first-generation immigrant, I fully agree with this.During our fun-packed conversation, we also asked Ghazale how to restore trust once it is shattered. I heard this expression before: “Trust arrives on foot but leaves on horseback.” In other words, building trust can take a very long time, but breaking trust can happen in an instant. Ghazale's advice is to own your mistakes and be honest. Quotes:Empathy is about putting yourself in other people's shoes and recognizing what you will never understand about someone. Listen and learn, don't assume. Always choose to do what is right over what is easy. If you are a mother don't plan past 6 months, there are many unknowns, and it can overwhelm you. I want to be remembered by how I treated people, not how I delivered the business process. Profit and Purpose can and should exist in the same concept.Guest Bio:As Founder and Principal of Joon Solutions, Ghazale Johnston advises rapidly growing companies on business development, client integration and workplace engagement. She is also an active angel investor and serves as advisor to early stage CEOs/ Founders. Ghazale specializes in purpose-driven businesses as well as companies focused on solving societal issues that disproportionately affect the lives of women and minorities. She is regularly involved in programs that address the emotional and educational needs of children impacted by trauma and poverty, which includes serving on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas. Her focus on education extends to her leadership roles at North Carolina State University. Ghazale is currently serving as the Vice Chair of the NC State University Foundation Board, is on the Leadership Council for the Wolfpack Women in Philanthropy and is a member of the Wolfpack Investor Network. Prior to launching Joon Solutions, Ghazale served as the Chief Operating Officer for Daymaker- a compassion platform that helps companies engage their employees through intentional acts of giving and service. Ghazale continues to advise Daymaker on strategic priorities and growth initiatives. Ghazale formerly spent 20 years at Accenture where she was a Partner/Managing Director in the Financial Services practice. In 2013, she was a winner of the Charlotte Business Journal 40 under 40 award.Ghazale loves telling stories and helping others tell their stories. She creates content, provides coaching and speaks publicly on various topics including helping women re-enter the workforce; advancing social causes; and the gifts and lessons she has gained as an immigrant. Ghazale lives in Charlotte with her husband, Andy. They have two children, Alex (15) and Millie (13) and a sweet Schnoodle named Duffy. Her "perfect day" includes a 5 mile run, traveling with her family and/or enjoying delicious food with friends. About WINGS:Hope you like what you heard.
