"Always come home". This is the story of a young Dallas Officer who had ambitions of fighting crime, serving the city and starting a new family. Mitchell Penton embraced the Northeast Patrol Division's fast pace and settled in with several other young officers that became a blue family.  Mitchell loved being a cop….was a loyal son, a devoted father, and husband and everyone in his life looked to the future to travel with him on this journey. But life being what it is - a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone's control changed all of that on February 13th, 2021, on an icy morning in Dallas, Texas. Officer Penton was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he worked an accident scene on North Central Expressway and Walnut Hill. He left behind an expectant wife, stepson, amazing parents and a brother and sister. Today we are hearing from his parents, Tim and Kathy, as they give a peek into who Mitchell Penton was as a child, a soccer player, a goofy and fun-loving kid, to his decision to serve as an Officer. They take us on their own journey from the night of February 13th, 2021, to the conclusion of a  trial in May of 2023.  This story is a powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of life and of the importance of cherishing our moments. It encourages us to live in the present, to appreciate the people and experiences around us, and to make the most of the time we have. Please welcome the Penton family to the ATO stage. Critical Incident: February 13, 2021: Police Officer Mitchell Penton was struck and killed by a vehicle operated by an intoxicated driver at about 1:45 am. He was working at the scene of a vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of the North Central Expressway at Walnut Hill Lane. He was securing traffic with the emergency lights from his patrol car when a vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, hit the back of his patrol car. The collision pushed the patrol car into Officer Penton. Officer Penton was transported to Baylor University Medical Center when he died from his injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Penton was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter of a police officer and intoxication assault. In 2023, he was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years.

In this week's episode, our host Jonathan Aymin sits down Amanda Peoples owner of Walnut Hill Wedding Venue to discuss what it was like turning her childhood family home into a wedding destination, how she has changed her advertising strategy over time as they grew in business, and how she juggles family time and working full time at the venue with her husband. About Our Guest: Amanda Peoples has a background in luxury customer service from her years working at some of Raleigh's landmark businesses such as The Umstead and Bailey's Fine Jewelry. She then moved to the events industry working with Party Reflections before opening Walnut Hill. Walnut Hill was once Amanda's childhood playground. The barns were her play houses, the chicken coup was the best hiding place, and the lake was where she perfected her swimming skills. As she grew up this piece of land was where she would go to get away from the world and find peace. In 2019, they began hosting weddings at the family estate. When this all began she thought they would do a few weddings a year and it would be a small part time job while she stayed home with her children. Well she never could have imagined how they would grow! Walnut Hill is now not only a full time project for Amanda, but her husband Scott joined the company in 2022! Christian made a repeat visit to RFB so we could talk about his family history, which is pretty complex. You can see how it does make sense that he's a comedian though—a sharp sense of humor is a testament to his survival skills! His younger brother was born when Christian was 8 and his older brother was 10. His younger brother was born with a serious heart ailment which by necessity became the focus of his parents. His mother had Borderline Personality Disorder and was super dramatic. Let's just say this was hard on his dad too. His parents split up. Christian father enrolled Christian into a boarding school for performing arts when he reached high school age which set him free—well somewhat. This is an inspiring story of a resilient young man who became a successful comedian with a fantastic marriage in spite of a dramatically difficult beginning. Subscribe to Christian Finnegan's new Substack: https://newmusicforolds.substack.com/ and keep you up to date with his expertly curated new music. I listen to new music. I'm perpetually chasing that new car smell. I spend hours every week scrolling through various New Release sections and indiscriminately clicking play. Results are inconsistent, but that's okay—it's primarily an avoidance mechanism! But as a result, I always have at least one new song to love. More about Christian HERE: https://christianfinnegan.com/ Twitter: @ChristFinnegan HERE'S an earlier Dr. Lisa Episode where Christian talks about his recent special: Show Your Work BIO: Christian Finnegan is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City. In high school he attended Walnut Hill, a boarding school focused programs in the performing, visual, and creative arts located in Natick, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of NYU where he studied acting and playwriting. He began his stand up career in 1995 in New York and regularly performs at comedy clubs and colleges around the country. Over the years, Christian has been a fixture on Comedy Central, having starred in his own one hour stand up special “Au Contraire”, as well as “Comedy Central Presents”, “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and countless network interstitials. He's also appeared on “Conan”, “The Late Late Show with James Corden”, “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show”. When not on tour, Christian Finnegan can usually be found in Queens helping his wife, author Kambri Crews, with her venue QED Astoria or walking their faithful pooches, Griswold and Chief Billy Bowlegs.

Van Hansis is a three-time Emmy Award nominated actor, best known for playing Luke Snyder on As the World Turns and Thom in the dark comedy web series Eastsiders. Currently Van is crowd funding on Kickstarter for his latest project: Ms. Guidance, a dark irreverent comedy which he is producing, directing and starring in. Ms. Guidance tells the story of Jenny Bump, a talented but self-absorbed actress who, after having a mental breakdown on the New York stage, decides to give up her dream of stardom and return to her alma mater, Loch Hill School for the Arts where she becomes a guidance counselor. But listening to her students' dreams only makes her long to act even more, and soon she is scheming for fame and ruining lives, including her own. It's a show about theater kids and the life that waits for them in the real world. It's a show about unrealized dreams, the disconnect between what we hope we will become and the reality that we end up with. It's a show about trying to let go of a dream that won't let go of you. In this conversation Van and Walker reminisce about their days at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, the inspiration (and location) for Ms. Guidance. They talk about who they were then and who they are now. They talk about how unique a place Walnut Hill is, and how the school changed their lives. Also- Van remembers his time on As the World Turns and sheds light on how to stay sane as an actor: never compare yourself with others, define success for yourself and create your own work whenever you can. Plus, tune in to hear Van explain how the character of Walker Pate in Ms. Guidance is different from Walker Pate Vreeland. And there is a difference. :-)
