In business, especially the art industry, we face a lot of rejections, and it is easy to get ahead of ourselves or think that we cannot get where we want to be. However, when you are resilient, focused, and true to yourself, your dreams will come true in a way you might not expect, which can be more special than what you would have created for yourself. Sometimes we don't see ourselves at different levels of success because of what people say and perceive about us. But taking power out of other people's hands and owning our own identity, regardless of how others see us, will empower us and change how we walk into a room.In this episode, Broadway actor Ashley Blanchet talks about how to step into your power as a woman (and a black woman) and how to own the your power and the things that make you different instead of shying away from them and trying to hide them from people. “People are all over watching, and if you have the integrity to do good works no matter what, it will come back around.” Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[03:19] Ashley's career journey and how she got where she is today.[06:13] Ashley's Broadway comeback experience in WAITRESS at Barrymore theater.[08:40] What was it like for Ashley to be the first black woman to play the role of Elsa?[11:34] A lesson that Ashley learned in a camp as a kid that she will never forget. [13:09] How is Ashley able to thrive in an industry where rejection is constant and part of the process? [18:42] Ashley's favorite and memorable projects that she has been part of.[23:38] How has pivoting helped Ashley discover new ways to use her acting skills during the pandemic?  [27:17] The things Ashley keeps exploring and stretching herself in to improve and grow. [30:44] Ashley's advice on self-tapes and taking classes to get your skills set and how to keep them accessible[35:13] What is Ashley doing to engage her fan base? How Ashley navigates performing and the business side of being a performer.[37:46] Ashley's advice on how to find a good agent, create a package, and put yourself out there.[41:45] What does working from your happy place means to Ashely?  [43:59] Ashley's advice for young people starting out on how to find their unshakable success.About Ashley Blanchet -Ashley Blanchet was most recently seen on Broadway as Dawn in WAITRESS at the Barrymore theater. Brian has been a fantastic guest on the podcast before on episode RSR174 to talk about working with indie rock bands. He's worked with thousands of artists over the years and has made albums in almost every genre imaginable.  Some of Brian's many credits include The Vatican Commandos featuring a young “Moby” as the lead singer, Dispatch, pop artist Marina and the Diamonds, Weakened Friends, and his longtime work as a producer and touring member of the band “The Sheila Divine”.  Brian is also an educator working with Berklee College of Music, Emerson College, The Walnut Hill School for The Arts, and The Recording Workshop. And he is the creator of the “Transatlantic Plate Reverb” at his plugin company Rare Signals where he digitally recreated the iconic plate reverbs of Zippah studio. Tragically in December 2021 His Home base studio, Zippah Recording (of 33 years), was destroyed in an 8-alarm fire. This week I chatted to Jovanna Burke a multi talented lady based in Vancouver. We chatted about her journey into acting, studying New York, creating your own work, auditions and some fun rapid fire questions. So, grab a coffee and enjoy! BIO: Jovanna grew up in a latino household and spent her childhood playing dress-up and creating characters. Since then she's done many things: graduated from school, met her true love, birthed two children. But she always seems to find herself back in the playroom with her dress-up clothes and her stories. Jovanna co-wrote and starred in her first play, `Gags Life’ in 1986, about a girl who magically and tragically lives in a tent with her mother Moisa on Campground 6 with the rest of her tragic extended family. The show was produced by and performed in the dining room of her family home, and ran every day for a staggering year straight. She was six years old. She followed her passion for storytelling to Walnut Hill School for the Arts as a Dance Major and in her junior year, landed her first professional gig. Dancing with the prestigious Boston Ballet. After an injury forced a major pivot, she continued her education in theatre at Circle in the Square, Weist-Barron Studio in NYC and then Vancouver Film School. Since then Jovanna has performed on stages across North America and accrued many hours on set in many capacities. Most notably acting, choreographing and producing. A couple of her favourites credits are: 'The True Heroines' (Leo Award, CSA Nomination) and 'The Trap' ( Leo Award Nom). With her extensive experience as an actor in film and television (over 45 credits to her name) and producer (The True Heroines, (YouTube + Hulu Plus) Jovanna’s creativity is constantly evolving. Having visualized stories since she was a child, she looks forward to telling important stories that focus on female driven narrative. Instagram: @officialjovanna

Alexander Soukas is a contemporary realist painter from Denver, Colorado.  His serious training in the fine arts began upon attending the Walnut Hill School for the arts, one of five high schools in the country dedicated to rigorous training in music, ballet, theatre, writing, and visual arts. Unsatisfied with his studies, and desiring to pursue a career as an artist, he began homeschooling as a way of earning his diploma while undertaking an apprenticeship with realist figure painter Jason Polins.  Soukas studied traditional painting and drawing in Boston with Polins for 4 years, where he now visits as a guest instructor at Polins' atelier, The Boston School of Painting. After high school, Soukas studied with scholarship, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in a coordinated program with the University of Pennsylvania for a year before leaving to seek a more rigorous classical training at Studio Incamminati.  While there, he worked for and studied under Nelson Shanks as one of his last apprentices. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/alexandersoukas In this episode, Alexander discusses: -What spurred his initial interest in painting. -The decision he had to make between painting and playing the cello. -His experience at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts and with Jason Polins. -His experience at The Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts and Studio Incamminati. -His advice to anyone that is unsatisfied with their education. -Working for and studying under Nelson Shanks. -How to approach working itself and understanding how to most effectively learn. -The importance of play (and how to find it). -Color studies and which types of people succeed at them. -Attacking your weaknesses. -Realizing the importance of enjoying the act of painting as opposed to worrying about creating a work of art. -How he balances his time. -Giving yourself a full line of questioning before quitting your job to become a full-time artist. Alexander's Final Push will inspire you to connect with the impulse that inspired you in the first place.   Quotes: “You just have to follow your gut.” “All education is self-education.” “Trust that internal compass and seek out what you need no matter what the risk.” “You will not find the perfect school.  It does not exist for anyone.  Part of the education is learning what you don’t want.” “I decided to attack that weakness and now it is one of my strengths.” “The struggles never end.  In fact, they only get more complicated.  But you get better at handling them.” “Your painting does not lie to you.  It simply can’t.  It’s a very intense mirroring of your inner life.” Links mentioned: After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path by Jack Kornfield Poet Robert Bly Studio Incamminati Connect with Alexander: Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!

Interview with the Artist

Van Hansis is a three-time Emmy Award nominated actor, best known for playing Luke Snyder on As the World Turns and Thom in the dark comedy web series Eastsiders. Currently Van is crowd funding on Kickstarter for his latest project: Ms. Guidance, a dark irreverent comedy which he is producing, directing and starring in. Ms. Guidance tells the story of Jenny Bump, a talented but self-absorbed actress who, after having a mental breakdown on the New York stage, decides to give up her dream of stardom and return to her alma mater, Loch Hill School for the Arts where she becomes a guidance counselor. But listening to her students' dreams only makes her long to act even more, and soon she is scheming for fame and ruining lives, including her own. It's a show about theater kids and the life that waits for them in the real world. It's a show about unrealized dreams, the disconnect between what we hope we will become and the reality that we end up with. It's a show about trying to let go of a dream that won't let go of you. In this conversation Van and Walker reminisce about their days at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, the inspiration (and location) for Ms. Guidance. They talk about who they were then and who they are now. They talk about how unique a place Walnut Hill is, and how the school changed their lives. Also- Van remembers his time on As the World Turns and sheds light on how to stay sane as an actor: never compare yourself with others, define success for yourself and create your own work whenever you can. Plus, tune in to hear Van explain how the character of Walker Pate in Ms. Guidance is different from Walker Pate Vreeland. And there is a difference. :-)

Works for keyboard and string quartet by George Li and Musicians from Marlboro.Haydn: Sonata in C Major, Hob. XVI: 50Haydn: String Quartet in E-Flat Major Op. 64, No. 6Joseph Haydn had a pretty comfortable life for a musician. He had his first appointment with a Bohemian nobleman at the age of 27, and from then on, he enjoyed a fairly quick ascension to the post of Kappellmeister in one of the richest courts in the Habsburg Empire, which encompassed both Austria and Hungary: the Esterhazy family. But a unique opportunity presented itself after the death of Prince Nikolaus, the second Esterhazy prince for whom Haydn had worked. Haydn received an invitation to go to London and present his work for an entirely new audience. It was an exciting turn of events for a composer that had spent many years rather isolated in the country, and Haydn accepted. The second piece we’ll hear on today’s podcast, Haydn’s String Quartet No. 52 was written just before that first big trip to London, when Haydn surely would have been busily working up a repertory of work to bring with him on his trip. His first trip was a triumph, and Haydn returned to London a few years later, in 1794, for his second (and last) visit. And the piece we’ll hear first on our program today, before the quartet, dates from that latter visit. We’ll begin with that piano sonata, performed in our recording by the young pianist George Li, an incredibly accomplished teenager studying in Boston at the Walnut Hill School and New England Conservatory. Then, we’ll move on to the quartet, played by Musicians from Marlboro.
