Former Ohio State Buckeye Joel Penton joins the show to share how a 1952 Supreme Court ruling and a vision from his hometown of Van Wert, Ohio sparked a nationwide movement. LifeWise Academy has grown from two pilot schools in 2019 to over 300 programs across more than a dozen states—bringing Bible education to public school students through Released Time Religious Instruction. Penton discusses the challenges of launching a faith-based initiative within public education, why he believes character formation matters now more than ever, and how local communities are driving this parent-permitted, privately funded model. Whether you're curious about the legal framework, passionate about student spiritual development, or interested in starting a program in your own community, this conversation offers practical insight into one of the fastest-growing religious education movements in America.
Allie is joined by Joel Penton, the founder and CEO of LifeWise Academy. LifeWise is a nonprofit organization that provides Bible education to public-school students. However, some schools are cracking down on LifeWise while permitting progressive initiatives in the classroom, like Pride Month. The Bible was removed from public schools in 1963; however, a Supreme Court ruling in 1952 allows released time for religious instruction. LifeWise takes students off campus for biblical instruction and walks them through the entire Bible in five years. LifeWise reaches 100,000 students across 34 states in over 1,100 schools, with parental permission and zero government funding. Anxiety and depression are rising among young Americans, and Joel is fighting to reach kids with the only solution: the truth and hope of Jesus Christ. This is #5 in our Revisited series as we discuss the Penton episode. This episode was one of the most emotional stories we have released. This is a behind the scenes on how the show idea came about and on the hosts personal takes on this shows impact. "Always come home". This is the story of a young Dallas Officer who had ambitions of fighting crime, serving the city and starting a new family. Mitchell Penton embraced the Northeast Patrol Division's fast pace and settled in with several other young officers that became a blue family. Mitchell loved being a cop….was a loyal son, a devoted father, and husband and everyone in his life looked to the future to travel with him on this journey. But life being what it is - a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone's control changed all of that on February 13th, 2021, on an icy morning in Dallas, Texas. Officer Penton was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he worked an accident scene on North Central Expressway and Walnut Hill. He left behind an expectant wife, stepson, amazing parents and a brother and sister. Today we are hearing from his parents, Tim and Kathy, as they give a peek into who Mitchell Penton was as a child, a soccer player, a goofy and fun-loving kid, to his decision to serve as an Officer. They take us on their own journey from the night of February 13th, 2021, to the conclusion of a trial in May of 2023. This story is a powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of life and of the importance of cherishing our moments. It encourages us to live in the present, to appreciate the people and experiences around us, and to make the most of the time we have. Please welcome the Penton family to the ATO stage. Critical Incident: February 13, 2021: Police Officer Mitchell Penton was struck and killed by a vehicle operated by an intoxicated driver at about 1:45 am. He was working at the scene of a vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of the North Central Expressway at Walnut Hill Lane. He was securing traffic with the emergency lights from his patrol car when a vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, hit the back of his patrol car. The collision pushed the patrol car into Officer Penton. Officer Penton was transported to Baylor University Medical Center when he died from his injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Penton was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter of a police officer and intoxication assault. In 2023, he was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years.
In the final episode of the Podcast-to-Book series, host Susan Diaz sits down with change leader and AI education lead Melissa Penton (Sun Life) for a human-first conversation about what actually makes AI adoption work. They talk productivity vs room-for-life, why one-prompt culture is snake oil, the shift from prompt engineering to context engineering, and the simplest enterprise question that changes everything: "What would make Monday easier for employees?" Episode summary Susan closes out the Podcast-to-Book sprint with a conversation that feels like the point of the whole series: AI isn't a tool problem. It's a people problem disguised as a tool problem. Melissa Penton shares her lens as a long-time change manager working in AI readiness and education inside a large organisation. Her focus isn't faster work. It's making room for what matters - and designing adoption in a way that's safe, honest, and grounded in real human tension points. Together, Susan and Melissa unpack why generic prompting courses aren't enough, why people get hives when they hear words like "workflow" and "agentic," and how leaders can create real change by starting with everyday pain. They also go deep on psychological safety, the fear of "training your robot replacement," and what it looks like to lead with humility in the biggest transformation most of us will live through. Key takeaways Productivity is the doorway. Room-for-life is the goal. Saving time is nice. The real win is using that time to live in your "zone of genius" and have space for the things you care about. One-prompt culture is snake oil. Useful AI work is iterative, messy, and conversational. The magic isn't the prompt. It's the human steering, correcting, and refining. Prompt engineering is evolving into context engineering. The skill isn't "write a clever prompt." It's learning to give the right context, ask better questions, and build on responses. Enterprise adoption should start with one simple question: "What would make Monday easier for my employees?" That question forces leaders to solve real friction instead of buying shiny tools. The biggest people problem masquerading as an AI problem is readiness. AI is being thrown at people who don't know where to start, how it fits their real lives, or how it changes their work without threatening them. Training should be experiential, not theoretical. Courses can help. But capability sticks when people learn by doing, inside real workflows, with real tasks, and real feedback loops. Psychological safety is non-negotiable. People won't share pain points if they fear automation will erase their job. Leaders shouldn't make promises they can't keep. They should make learning safe and transferable. Workflows don't have to be scary. A workflow is just the steps you already take. "Ask a question → make notes → read notes → act." That's a workflow. Low-risk experiments lead to higher-risk breakthroughs. The "AI coffee warmer" might feel silly. But it's part of the lab. Small experiments teach the muscles needed for bigger transformations. Leadership in the AI era requires humility. Admit you're learning. Model curiosity. Use AI to explore recurring organisational stuck points, mediate perspectives, and surface patterns in conversations. Joel Penton, CEO of LifeWise Academy, joins Scot Bertram to explore how school choice is evolving from political polls to real-world impact. Penton discusses how LifeWise is helping families access quality education options that align with their values, the challenges parents face navigating public and private school systems, and why expanding school choice is crucial for America's students and communities.
Unbeknownst at the time, a little-known Supreme Court ruling from more than seventy years ago would ignite a growing movement of teaching the Bible during school hours called Lifewise Academy. The Bible-based education program has now partnered with over 1,000 schools across 35 states nationwide. When the federal government removed Bible education and prayer from public school curriculums, the Supreme Court ruled in 1952 on a compromise: Zorach vs Clauson. It permits public schools to release students during school hours "for religious instruction or devotional exercises." For years, the law went unnoticed and unfulfilled as secular forces in the public square banged the drumbeat of 'Separation of Church and State." But when former college football player Joel Penton discovered it, he took it and ran with it, creating Life Wise in 2019. On this episode of the Lighthouse Faith podcast, Penton talks about the new documentary on Life Wise called "Off School Property" and how the program has evolved to restore faith education on school property. Off School Property will be released in theatres on October 23 in partnership with Fathom Entertainment. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

PNR: This Old Marketing | Content Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose
Get ready for this special episode that you needed to hear years ago. Let me say this plainly: Working for someone else is the riskiest thing you can do right now. For decades, we believed that a "good job" was the ultimate security. A steady paycheck. Healthcare. Maybe a 401(k) with a match. But that model is falling apart in real time. I've seen this from the inside. I've been the employee. I've been the boss. I've been the guy who signed the layoff papers. When I was at Penton we went through three rounds of layoffs in 18 months and it was devastating for everyone involved. And this continues today but at breakneck speed. Here's the truth: no job is safe anymore...especially in marketing. AI is replacing entry-level marketers faster than we can track. Some agencies I know are in desperation mode. The only advice brand marketing teams get is to lean more into AI. Is that even the right strategy? And executive teams still don't understand what content actually does...until they decide it's too expensive (even thought it's not) and cut it. Here's the harsh truth: Most people following the “good job, good life” blueprint are broke, stressed, unfulfilled, and trapped. The old dream isn't dead because people stopped working hard. It's dead because the game changed and nobody updated the playbook. ----- This week's links: Dallas Cowboys NOT America's Team Joe Pulizzi's New Book "Burn the Playbook" Pre-Order ----- This week's sponsor: You don't become the world's most valuable women's sports franchise by accident. In light of the Supreme Court's split decision regarding an Oklahoma religious charter school, Joel Penton of LifeWise Academy talks about how churches can use laws around religion release to establish a time public students can leave campus to get Bible instruction during school hours. Penton joins Greg to discuss LifeWise Academy's impact across America since 2019 and its attempts to be more active assisting local churches and parents in Alabama. The two also talk through their dismay and surprise that legislation in Alabama requiring school districts in Alabama to adopt a policy concerning religious release time during school hours has struggled to garner necessary support. This in spite of less conservative states across the U.S. passing similar requirements. www.lifewise.org

Send us a textEmily Penton is the creator of The Inner Clarity System, which focuses on how to create your new way of being. Emily has learned that feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless is the false reality that comes with contaminated thinking. According to her, the food we eat is the first pollutant that creates the physical distress in our brains. The wrong combination of foods, along with the over-processed and imitation foods lock us into cravings and inflammation. Therefore, the brain and the body have diminished capacity, and excessive medications are used to feel better and overcome the brain fog.The toxic accumulation of chemicals becomes ineffective, and the residue builds, and bad food, unnecessary medication and crippled thinking create a powerful trifecta overlording our lives, which is no way to live.Emily Penton proposes a new way of freedom by creating a way of living that guarantees clarity, purpose and simplicity is the key to your being: a vibrant healthy body, a strong clear mind, and a true spirit. And this peaceful transformation is attainable through the application of an animal-based diet, and retraining the brain! LifeWise Academy is on a mission to reach school children with the gospel—during school hours! When LifeWise launched in 2018, the initial goal was to serve 25 schools by 2025, but it surpassed that long ago. By the start of this year, LifeWise had set up chapters in more than 300 schools in a dozen states, teaching 35,000 public school students weekly Bible lessons that are usually scheduled to coincide with lunch or non core courses such as library, art or gym class.
