Who is Bill Small?Bill Small is no stranger to diversifying his skills; he's made his living as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Mystiquero, entrepreneur, artist, producer, vocal coach, business and personal coach... all facets that combine into a potent musical force evident on his latest release, Call Me Lucky.Bill grew up in a musical household where everyone could sing, just a stone's throw from the Big Apple. From Sinatra and swing to show-tunes. Todd Rundgren to Pink Floyd. Growing up in the 70's with FM radio and 2 older sisters to steal records from, he caught the music bug bad. Part of his teen years were spent learning everything he could about theater while working as a student performer and intern at The Whole Theater Company in Montclair, NJ. When he wasn't doing that he was writing songs and.....you guessed it, playing in bands! Bill moved around some during high school with his family, and then on his own after graduation, and always found a band to play music with. Playing in bands has been a constant for most of his life. After 2 years studying voice at at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and another couple of years living in Jersey and working in New York City, he decided to make a change. His family had lived in a magical place called Austin, TX before he was born, and when he was very young, they used to take family vacations to Texas. He had been hearing about all the great music there and of course, being in his "Guitar Slinger" phase, the lure of Stevie Ray was too hard to resist. Bill moved to Austin along with two great friends and fine musicians from Jersey, and they found themselves performing all over Austin in the early nineties as Heavy Weather.More bands came and went in the nineties (Radio Thieves, Stringbones), and a solo record entitled Singin. There was a move back to Boston, then to Nashville, a divorce and then finally a move back to Austin in 2004. As Bill puts it, fate intervened for his longest running band gig to date. “I got a call from my friend Marcus Eldridge, another old friend from Texas who had recently returned from Nashville. He was having lunch with my friend John Greenberg, and Walt Wilkins. I heard Walt in Nashville and we met once briefly, and I was a big fan of his music. Walt needed a band for a gig at Gruene Hall and John was kind enough to remind him that I played the bass. So the Mystiqueros were born on stage at Gruene Hall in the spring of 2006. Best band I've ever worked with. Period.”Since then, there's been more records produced and or engineered, lots of miles, lots of shows, and lots more to come. Call Me Lucky is Bill's latest solo offering...a soulful and thoughtful album full of plenty of stomp and groove. Coupled with Bill's unmistakable vocal style, it makes for a journey just as entertaining as his life story. Today's guest is Bill Small, a singer-songwriter and entrepreneur at ARTIST MIND, INC. in Austin, TX. A badass business and personal coach, Bill Small has helped hundreds of clients achieve new levels of success and fulfillment over the last 15 years. In 2008 Bill joined the coaching team at Northstar ventures which provided coaches for programs by noted authors Joe Vitale and Bob Doyle, both featured in “The Secret.” That same year Bill worked with Bob Doyle as his personal coach, and was featured in the documentary film, The Boundless Living Challenge. In 2016 Bill created Artist Mind Inc. to make coaching available to small business owners. In 2018 he was asked to join the consulting team at VIP Medical Consultants, and became a partner in healthcare start-up Advanced Clinical Management. Taking a break from touring and live music performances during the 2020 pandemic shut down, Bill created and launched the Awareness Advantage Workshop, a group training course in mindfulness. In 2021 it's back to performing and launching a new podcast, The Subtle Art of Not Yelling with co-host Miles Hanson. In this episode, you'll also hear highlights from 3 of Bill's latest songs. In our interview, we talk about MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT Marketing Healthcare Business Mindfulness Creativity Career Coaching Growing up outside of New York City, Bill honed his performance skills early in student workshops at the Whole Theater Company directed by Olympia Dukakis. After attending Berklee College of music, he spent the next 3 decades working as a performer, producer, recording artist, vocal coach, and songwriter. In 2006 he became a founding member of the Texas Americana group Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros, and over the next 15 years released 5 records with the band, 4 solo records, and toured the U.S. and Europe. I first became aware of Songwriter Terry Klein in 2018 when Radio Promoter Adam Dawson of Broken Jukebox Music sent me Terry's sophomore effort, “Tex”. I saw that Walt Wilkins produced the album and that's really all I needed to know to be intrigued enough to give it a full and complete listen. He has garnered high praise from two of my musical heroes, Mary Gauthier and Rodney Crowell as well as press and radio outlets across the United States and Europe. For his third album, Terry went to Nashville and worked with producer, multi-instrumentalist and award winning songwriter in his own right, Thomm Jutz. Good Luck, Take Care is described as a raw, visceral departure from the work he's done before. Ten dynamic songs that take hold from the first measure, knock you off balance, and won't let go without a fight. Adam contacted me in early 2022 to see if I might be of assistance in getting Terry a Kansas City gig because the postponement of Folk Alliance International's Music Conference here until May 2022 was going to leave a big whole in his touring schedule to promote “Good Luck, Take Care.” Terry was able to find a Kansas City gig and I was only too happy to have him on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show the day before he was to appear in our town. Enjoy this on air conversation where we extoll the virtues of leading a lyrical life from Boston to Austin, collaborating with some of the best producers and songwriters in Americana/Roots Music and the importance of investing in your craft through co-writes and workshops.

This is Part Two of the Jamie Richards Real Deal Interview. Please visit stonecoldcountry.net for the full interview. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot off of the heels of one of his biggest career hits, Twang, Jamie Richards shows no signs of slowing down. With a professional career that started in Nashville in the 90s, Jamie's worked with several of the top major labels. But it was his Curb Records debut in 2001 that got things going for our September featured artist Jamie Richards. There is so much to love about Jamie's soul searing vocals, but Jamie is also an accomplished songwriter whose songs have been covered by Walt Wilkins, Ken Mellons, and Kevin Fowler to name a few. Jamie has also written with the very best hall of fame songwriters known to the world. Dean Dillon, Larry Cordle, Rory Burch, and Jim Rushing are just a few of the notables that have broken bread with the near legendary honky tonker. In this two part reflective interview, Jamie takes us to his Nashville years, the best song he's ever written, and the future. This is an up, and close view of an artist that has never compromised his musical integrity. Jamie Richards is among only a select few that still remain proudly, and lovingly holding the torch high for traditional country music, and we are all better for it. As season two continues, I am thrilled to have Kelley Mickwee on the show today. Kelley is a fellow Cherokee who moved to Austin from Memphis and joined up with a killer four piece called the Trishas. She's a Shiny Soul Sister in Kevin Russell's Shinyribs. She's a founding member of Red River Songwriters along with Drew Kennedy, Josh Grider, Walt Wilkins, Susan Gibson and Brandy Zdan. But what I admire most about Kelley is her show on Sun Radio called River Girl Radio. We talked about her love of said show and how the theme of the often has her diving into deep artist listening. Much like my passion for doing this podcast. Cleaning also comes into our conversation about her records. For 10 years of his music career, Adam Hood was just background noise in many of the venues he was playing. His audiences were more concerned with the eight ball in the corner pocket or chasing tail. Then this masterful storyteller, songwriter and musician came to Texas, and he was embraced with both arms. His incredible music started to be celebrated and showcased. Other artists took notice. He's written for and with some legendary names in Texas and Nashville. The last time he came on The Road Less Traveled, he described his music as “story-driven, roadhouse rock.” His lyrics have the power to speak to your soul and make you jump in your car and chase the sunset.Walt Wilkins: https://www.adamhood.com/Drew Myers: https://www.drewmyers.life/The Texan Theater: http://www.zacwilkersonmusic.com/Kincy Abstract and Sabine Title Company: https://www.kincy-sabine.com/index.htmMusic: https://www.purple-planet.com
The landscape of the Texas Music scene is beautiful, and it's the amazing singer/songwriters that celebrate that beauty. Each one of these artists brings a wonderfully great perspective to the genre – each perspective is unique and powerful. Our two featured artists on this Road Less Traveled exemplify that. Walt Wilkins is a poet that can pierce your soul with one verse. Zac Wilkerson writes powerful blues ballads, filled with fire. The respect for each other's music runs deep. That is why Drew Myers asked them to share the stage for one night at the Texan Theater in Greenville, Texas. Walt and Zac are both card-carrying members of the Defining Audacity Family. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Brandon Rhyder’s backstory in becoming a modern-day staple of the Texas and Red Dirt Music scene sounds familiar, yet is totally unique. In the beginning, a small spark is lit inside the aspiring artist. They ponder their life and the gravity of the decision to seriously give the dream of being a touring and recording artist an honest to goodness shot. Then, through a series of events, that small spark gets fanned into a flame and through hard work, dedication, perseverance and “conviction” leads to a successful career. Sounds simple doesn’t it… But in Brandon’s case, before any of that happened, it took a little encouragement from his friend Ricky to make him seriously consider giving the music business a shot; and when he did, it completely changed the trajectory of his life. Brandon grew up in northeast Texas, but it really wasn’t until he attended college at UT-Tyler that he even considered picking up the guitar. Once he did, it was a natural evolution for him to start stringing chords together behinds the words he’d already been writing. But, that’s almost where the story ends. After graduation, Brandon did what most good boys and girls do; he entered the workforce, took a steady job and settled down with his wife. The thought of pursuing a career in music hadn’t even crossed his mind. He and his new wife built a home and began what looked to be a very “normal” life. Interestingly enough, within a year of building the home, and through the encouragement of the home builder himself, (the previously mentioned Ricky), Brandon and his wife headed for Austin. They put a for-sale sign in the front yard and took off to chase the music dream. Almost 20 years after making that decision now, it’s certainly proved to be the right one. In this interview with Brandon he talks with us about his early years in Austin and slowly building a following. Then, he explains that after meeting and sharing the stage with legendary singer-songwriter, Walt Wilkins, things quickly changed. Walt produced Brandon’s 2005 record, “Conviction”. After that, Brandon’s career gained steam very quickly with larger crowds at live shows and record sales going way up. With the success of Conviction, Brandon was soon playing 180+ live shows per year; a pace that would continue for the next 6 years. In the interview Brandon also talks about recording trips to Nashville and working with other legendary artists like Radney Foster who would also go on to produce Brandon’s 2008 record, “Every Night”. During this time of his career Brandon explains how he landed a deal with a Nashville publishing company and was travelling there at least six times a year or more to write with other people. Towards the end of this interview the conversation takes a more serious tone as Brandon divulges his recent multi-year struggle with a health issue. Finally after many, doctors and many tests, they were able to pinpoint what had been plaguing him and now Brandon is feeling better than he has in years which has lead to great vocal range and more new songs being written. Brandon also talks about the awful disease that is Cancer, and how it recently claimed the life of his hunting and fishing buddy, who also happened to be his father-in-law. The silver lining in this sad story is that Brandon has written and recently recorded a new tune stemming from this experience which pays homage to his father-in-law. In the final minutes of the interview Brandon relays a very sad story to us involving a friend and fan of his music named Jacob who was a member of our armed forces whom just in the morning before this interview was recorded, had attempted to take his own life. Brandon makes clear that he wants to shine more light on the tragedy that is PTSD and the high suicide rate of former military personnel. In Carly’s outro for this show she gives a couple resources for those suffering from PTSD which we ask that all listeners of the podcast and readers of this blog to share with others. The first is Mission 22, who’s goal is to put an end to veteran suicide. Please visit www.mission22.com and consider donating to their cause. The second resource is the Suicide Prevention Lifeline whose number is 1-800-273-8255. One life lost is one too many…. If you love songwriting and storytelling this is the show for you! Drew Kennedy and Walt Wilkins are incredible, and their chemistry together on stage is undeniable. It was my dream show. I was SO excited about putting Drew, Walt and their incredible music in the spotlight. This live-audience show did not disappoint! #liveonpurpose #supportlivemusic
Walt Wilkins is a legendary singer/songwriter on the Texas Music scene. I found out during my in-studio conversation that he's an even better human being. What an amazing man. I was so honored and blessed to get to know him and talk about his goals, dreams and aspirations, which includes working at a small-town airport.
This week Bobby and Donovan get the chance to talk to master songwriter, producer & friend, Walt Wilkins. Recorded live from the Live Oak Music Hall green room in Fort Worth, the guys touch on many topics with Walt including: his musical beginnings, influences, the move to Nashville and then back to Texas, nightmare songwriting stories from Nashville, his favorite concert, the birth of The Mystiqueros, how he feels about being referred to as the "Godfather" of Texas songwriters, his new record "Streetlight" & the time he hung out with Michael Jackson.
