Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include: Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". The Ground soft opened on Earth Day as a nod to its dedication to sustainability. Another recent opening we discuss is at 02:25:35 of the episode is with Richie Romero the Partner- Chief Hospitality Officer at Simplevenue and talked about Sushi by Boū is presented by simplevenue, a NYC-based hospitality group specializing in micro restaurants, and in bringing incredible concepts to underutilized spaces across the country. The company is led by Founders Michael Sinensky and Erika London, alongside newly appointed Partner and Chief Hospitality Officer Richie Romero. Its flagship brand Sushi by Boū changed the sushi counter experience in America, it offers a modern take on the classic old-school sushi counter, providing a glimpse at the hustle and bustle of Japan's food culture, combined with a truly unique, personalized culinary experience. To date, there are currently 16 locations for Sushi by Boū in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Florida, Puerto Rico and now Philadelphia too! Fishtown guests will enjoy ambiance inspired by the Hip Hop Era of the 90s, with graffiti covered walls, dozens of suspended vinyls overhead, playlights dedicated to the best of 90s Hip Hop and murals of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Hip Hop legends. Last, but certainly not last at 02:49:30 of the episode, Sam Eckstein Co-Founder of Springbone Kitchen just launched a new burger concept in NYC called Springy Burgers & Fries. It's a radically healthy take on the classic American burger joint. They've got grass-fed beef tallow in their deep fryer (just like McDonald's used to do it back in the day!) and of course their beef is 100% grass-fed; even their burger buns are gluten free. The concept is an offshoot of their first restaurant venture, Springbone Kitchen, which was an early leader in the bone broth movement. They now have 8 Springbone locations around the NYC area which are doing amazing. They used to serve a burger at their original location which was insanely popular, but they realized that to do anything well in this business you need to be a specialist. So they axed the burger and hoped to come back and do it right one day. Well that day is now! Again, in 2023, Small Bites with Donato Marino and Derek Timm of Bluejeanfood.com was blown away by winning the Best of the Best in the Philadelphia Region Arts & Entertainment category out of 80,000 votes tallied in total through Metro Philly's Best of Philadelphia for 2023. Every year, Film at Lincoln Center honors a luminary of the film industry with the Chaplin Award. This year's honoree is a beloved screen icon: the Dude, the Starman, the legend—Jeff Bridges. In advance of the 49th Chaplin Award Gala, taking place on April 29, Devika sat down with Bridges for a look back at the actor's long career. Taking inspiration from a painting Bridges made many years ago, titled Jeff Makes a Decision, which depicts him as a stick figure navigating a river full of whirlpools, their conversation touched upon several of Bridges's iconic roles—The Last Picture Show, Tron, Crazy Heart, and more—and how the actor ended up in those movies, often in spite of himself. Bridges also discussed the lasting influence his parents, both actors, have had on him; some of the crazy on-set stories behind his most memorable performances; and the television shows he is currently enjoying.

It's a Mark birthday movie-- the very non-franchise-y Crazy Heart which won Jeff Bridges an Oscar. Unlike the Academy, the rest of us hated this movie to various degrees. Andy goes on a 25 minute rant about country music fans and the Fast Car remake. Mark says Andy needs to calm down. Melissa and Kitt still don't like the movie. Alcoholism. Schroedinger's Single Mom. The age difference thing. We do like the music though. JB appears just in time for studio notes. Can we separate art from artist? Next week is JB's birthday movie, the Moroder version of Metropolis, which you can see here. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kissyourfranchisegoodbye/message
It's the final(?! for now!) Clerks movie and boy is Melissa sorry. Having sex with dead people in heaven. Mark's hot take on Cleopatra: Not Hot. O Brother, Phil and David had an absolutely fantastic, fascinating and far-ranging "Lunch" with the great T Bone Burnett while in Nashville recently -- so much so that none of them actually ate their delicious breakfast sandwiches from @hseanbrock's Joyland until after this conversation stopped. So you will hear no chewing here, yet there is a lot to chew on. The Oscar and Grammy winning Burnett goes deep about not just his own remarkable career -- from early life-changing experiences on Bob Dylan's legendary Rolling Thunder Revue and being a musician in the infamous yet artful big screen "fiasco" known as "Heaven's Gate" to his extraordinary work on soundtracks like "O Brother, Where Art Thou" and "Crazy Heart" right until today, including some notable recent recording with Dylan that reflects Burnett's deep thinking about the value of music, and the place in our world today. Phil and David want to thank T Bone -- who's produced everyone from Roy Orbison to Los Lobos to Elton John to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss to Counting Crows and The Wallflowers -- and Michelle Freetly for setting up their mics at East Iris Studios and making this "Lunch" far and away our coolest and most atmospheric recording yet. #835 - John Goodwin - Third Interview The John Goodwin Third Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Believe it or not, I already knew you were here. Believe me, I knew you had tuned in to The Paul Leslie Hour. Would you believe Paul took a little four day trip to Nashville, Tennessee. You better believe it. One of the activities Paul found himself enjoying was having a burger and fries at Brown's Diner. He said it was exceptional, maybe even unbelievable. One of the highlights of the trip was to spend time with the clever, very witty John Goodwin. It made Paul recall this archival interview recorded telephonically many years back. John Goodwin is really an incredible singer-songwriter. At the time of the interview, he had released his album entitled “Goodwin.” That unbelievable record featured a new direction for John with solo acoustic performances and duets with Jessica Andrews, Michael McDonald and Jeff Bridges. John Goodwin is also a visual artist–a painter and photographer. Please check out goodwinartgallery.com to see some of his work. Another interesting fact about John. His songs have been featured in several major motion pictures including Crazy Heart, Surf's Up, The Amateurs, and Tideland. We'd be so honored and pleased if you'd subscribe to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel. We're really trying to push the channel as it helps us in our pursuit of our mission. What mission is that? Helping people tell their stories. Please believe in us and subscribe. Okay, let's hear this third interview with John Goodwin from the archives. It's got that kind of “telephone” sound to it, but you'll be able to understand. Transcript is on the website for your convenience and reading pleasure. I believe it's time to start this one. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Christian Bale and Scott Cooper join the show to talk about their latest collaboration,The Pale Blue Eye. Set at West Point in 1830, the film follows world-weary detective Augustus Landor (played by Christian Bale) who is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Impeded by the cadets' code of silence, Landor enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would later come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.Bale and Cooper give their unique perspectives on what drew them to the original source material, describe the process of casting Harry Melling (who plays Edward Allen Poe), and provide perspective on the essential role that music plays in the film. They also give insight into what makes their creative dynamic click, explain the shorthand they've developed over the years, and share a few small wins that have brightened their lives recently.
Scott Copper (Director, Screenwriter, Producer) made his feature film directorial debut in 2009 with Fox Searchlight's Oscar-winning CRAZY HEART, which he also wrote and produced. The film, which starred Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall, earned three Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Actor (Bridges) and Best Original Song (T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham). Cooper won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and earned WGA, USC Scripter and Independent Spirit Award nominations, for his screenplay.Cooper's follow-up was the Leonardo DiCaprio/Ridley Scott-produced OUT OF THE FURNACE, starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Zoë Saldana, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard. For his work as writer, director and producer, Cooper won the Best Debut and Second Film Award at the 2013 Rome Film Festival, where he was also nominated for a Golden Marc'Aurelio Award. Next was Cooper's 2015 Warner Bros. gangster film BLACK MASS, which Cooper both directed and produced and which made its worldwide debut at the Venice International Film Festival. The box-office hit garnered wins from critics associations across the country, and earned lead actor Johnny Depp the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, as well as a Best Actor nomination from the Screen Actors Guild. In 2017, Cooper's western epic HOSTILES debuted at both the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festivals, earning widespread critical acclaim. The film reunited Cooper with his OUT OF THE FURNACE star Christian Bale and featured performances from Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane and Ben Foster. Cooper followed this up with ANTLERS, an exploration of yet another genre in the Guillermo Del Toro-produced horror film. Searchlight released the film to acclaim in October 2021.Most recently, Cooper re-teamed for the third time with Bale on THE PALE BLUE EYE, an adaptation of Louis Bayard's novel of the same name. The film tells the story of a series of murders at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1830 and a cadet the world would later come to know as Edgar Allan Poe. Robert Duvall, Gillian Anderson, Timothy Spall, Toby Jones and Harry Melling round out the cast. The Netflix film will debut in Fall of 2022. Born in Virginia, Cooper now resides in Los Angeles. Please enjoy my conversation with Scott Copper.
Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell as country music icons?! Where do we sign? In this episode, Mike and Brian dive into director Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," an intimate character study of an aging and down-on-his-luck musician (Bridges, who won the Oscar for Best Actor). The film owes a lot to Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler," and Mike and Brian parse out those comparisons. They talk "fake" biopics, the complicated world of happy endings, how original music compares to the ultra-famous songs that frame out films about real-life legends like Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, then decide whether or not this movie will make their top fives of 2009. Vi pratar också om: Red Screening, The Last Matinee, Cassandra Khaw, Nothing but Blackened Teeth, V Castro, Goddess of Filth, Mestiza Blood, Spår, Creepypodden, Ramsey Campbell, The Parasite, Mats Strandberg, Konferensen, Grady Hendrix, The Final Girl Support Group, Richard Chizmar, Chasing the Boogeyman, Stephen Graham Jones, My Heart Is a Chainsaw, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Vänligheten, Karin och Abel, Johannes Pinter, Karmakoma, Fredrik P Winter, Olycksfåglar, Vikarien, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Candyman, The Night House, David Buckner, The Ritual, Hellraiser, The Power, Corinna Faith, Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Grim, Grävlingen, Things Heard & Seen, All Things Cease to Appear, Elizabeth Brundage, Emanuel Swedenborg, Skräcken på Wakenhyrst, Scream, There's Someone Inside Your House, Patick Brice, Creep, Wes Craven, V/H/S 94, Timo Tjahjanto, Macabre, May the Devil Take You, Halloween Kills, David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Vicious Fun, Horror in the High Desert, Lamb, Noomi Rapace, Wrong Turn, Censor, Squid Game, Don Coscarelli, Psycho Goreman, Steven Kostanski, The Void, The Advent Calender, Antlers, Scott Cooper, Crazyheart, Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, The Vigil, Midnight in Paris, Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead, Legatum: arvet, Johan Sehlstedt, Quentin Tarantino, I död och lust, The Trip, I onde dager, Tommy Wirkola, Död snö, Old, M. Night. Shyamalan, Gustaf Hammarsten, No One Gets Out Alive, Adam Neville, His House, The Feast, Anders Fager, Ingemar Fredmans epistlar, Caveat, Possum, Malignant, Black Mirror, Come True, Hellbound, The Silent Sea, Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass, Salems Lot, Tre kronor, The sacrament, Brand New Cherry Flavour, Catherine Keener, Get Out, Willys Wonderland, Nicholas Cage, Titane, Julia Ducournau, Raw, A Quiet Place II, Sator, Blood Red Sky, Fried Barry, In the Earth, Ben Wheatley, Killist, A Field in England, For the Sake of Vicious, Don´t Breathe 2, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Surge, Ben Whishaw, Slaxx, Fear Street, Saint Maud och självklart lite om Skräckkokboken, men inte nödvändigtvis i den ordningen. Icke-Patreon-lyssnare missar hälften, men det är billigt att inte göra sig den olyckan. Nostalgi, löst tyckande och akademisk analys.
This week Jeff, John & Dave talk about Antlers, now available on HBOMax, directed by Scott Cooper, who is a FORCE. Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Hostiles, Black Mass, now this. Actors love him (he was one of them), Guillermo del Toro loves him so much he essentially forced Cooper to make this film, stepping up as producer. Scary antler stuff, lore, an Oregon meth town in the woods, Kerri Russell, Jesse Plemmons, a child actor who's insanely good... this movie is really great. Give Scott Cooper your love. F the critics. I was thinking about roles that were not only perfectly cast but ones that you could almost not picture any other actor being able to pull off. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool came to mind. So did Jeff Bridges' portrayal of Otis “Bad” Blake from Crazy Heart. At the top of my list, tho, has to be Mickey Rourke as Randy “The Ram” Robinson in The Wrestler. Not only was his physical acting and physique perfectly fitting for the character, but, the acting work he does outside of the ring is so convincing, you almost forget it isn't a real person you're watching, which makes for an entirely immersive movie viewing experience. I'm curious if you guys have any film roles that you couldn't picture anyone else doing.” Peter's Picks: Daniel Day Lewis as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, Harrison Ford in Star Wars, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight HT's Picks: Ben Affleck in Gone Girl, Charlize Theron as Furiousa in Mad Max: Fury Road, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa Chris' Picks: Mads Mikkelsen, Hannibal; Daniel Day Lewis, gangs of New york; Cate Blanchett, Carol To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
