Nick Hounsfield was introduced to surfing by his father Brian in the mid 1970s on his regular visits to Cornwall in the United Kingdom. He has been an avid surfer ever since.Nick became an Osteopath by trade and founded a successful family business with this wife. But as time wore on and when Nick's father passed away in the late 2000's, he started to think about the world a little differently. He began to think about open spaces in nature and the healing aspects of engaging and being in nature. He started to realize that a lot of people's poor health was due to a number of things such as not exercising, not eating well, lack of connection to others, lack of nature connectedness and so on…He set about trying to pull these different factors together and look at how he could solve some of these issues through one holistic vision. By chance this was around the same time that Wavegarden released a video of their first technology which would bring waves inland, for the first time.Nick had a eureka moment. And this was the start of his mythological quest to bring his concept of The Wave to the United Kingdom. It's been a long journey for Nick, which involves every obstacle you can think of on his way to realizing his vision. Fundraising, permits, Global Pandemic, shaky economy, Brexit, and a stroke. But, Nick persevered and has succeeded in realizing his vision and pioneered a new business model while minimizing its environmental impact and offering an exceptional surf experience with a safe, inclusive space for all surfers. We think you are going to really enjoy this episode. Did you know that Nick Hounsfield comes from a family of inventors? He didn't invent the wave pool at his surf park. No, Wavegarden did that. But he's constantly focused on how things could work. It's like a constant invitation to daydream. We learned this early on but only now have gotten around to poking at this side of Nick. In this conversation we dig into the creative side of wave pooling and explore the current state of the wave pool space and, of course, Nick's excitement for the future.

I met this week’s guest, Sean Young of Wave Garden, five or six years ago in Orlando Florida while I was moderating talks for the surf park industry.
Catching up with Wavegarden is an exciting conversation. We discuss the traditional diamond shaped "Cove" and how it could be modified to fit different locations and topographies. We talk energy and how the Wavegarden is more efficient than any of it's competitors. We talk about some of the key projects that they're working on around the world and Séan lists the "next to market" contenders. It's definitely an exciting company to be working for! One point that really stood out for me was when Séan outlined some details of the Fazenda do Grama project in Brazil. Fascinating!

We catch up with Rupert Partridge who is the Group & Brand Marketing for URBNSURF Australia. In this episode we learn a lot about URBNSURF and their Wavegarden technology, and also a little about wave pool technology in general. Rupert shares what it was like opening Australia's first wave pool with so much hype and demand, and then having quickly shut things down due to COVID, and try to operate the business through stringent Melbourne lock-downs, including a few re-opens and then shut-downs. We also learn about the plans for URBNSURF to open more locations across Australia! Enjoy!
“Wavegarden”, the sound of that name evokes a zen-like space where waves roll endlessly through green spaces pulsing with lush natural life. As if you didn’t know, it’s actually a company created way back in 2005, that sits deep in a northern Spanish valley. It’s a richly forested and abundant area ravaged by harsh Atlantic winters and pounded by massive waves during the cold, rainy months. It is from this secret hideaway that Sean Young chats to us all about the history of Wavegarden, how he came to join the exclusive firm and how they came to be operating in all four corners of the planet.
Up to 1,000 waves an hour will be generated at England’s first inland surf park when it opens, expected to be later this year. The Wave will use the second phase of technology from Spanish group Wavegarden, creating waves that vary in size from 50cm to two metres in a kite-shaped lake the size of four football pitches. I went to the site in Bristol to see how the building work is progressing, and find out more about plans for a second project near London. The Wave’s CEO Craig Stoddart told me what the development will look like once it is completed, and the challenges faced along the way.
Want to know more about wave pools? Jimmy catches up with URBNSURF Founder Andrew Ross to discuss all things wave pools. We chat the business and science of wave pools and look at what we can expect in terms of customer experience from the new pool being built in Tullamarine. We also discuss Andrew's personal journey from successful CEO in an ASX listed company to taking the leap and following a passion to bring Wavegarden tech to Australia. So much surf it hurts fuelled by the legends at Rogue Wave Brewing.

Can we make better surfing waves than the wild ocean, asks marine biologist and writer Helen Scales. Helen loves surfing but she describes it as an extreme form of delayed gratification, especially around the British coast. Nature does not make great surfing waves to order. Waiting for the perfect wave demands patience, a warm wet suit and a cool head (especially if somebody jumps the queue and steals your ride). Becoming skilful on a surf board takes years if you can only practise on what the wild sea provides and even longer if you don’t live anywhere near the sea. Helen goes in search of short cuts: aquatic engineering to make more and better ‘breaks’. Her quest takes her to Boscombe, a seaside suburb of the English coastal town of Bournemouth. The council spent £3.2 million on an artificial surf reef, which was designed to boost the wave height: lengthen the ride duration: and magnify Boscombe as a surfer dude magnet. It was already a spot known to the surfing folk of the Dorset coast but the artificial reef was going to make Boscombe a national surf destination. Unfortunately in 2010, the underwater construction of gigantic sausages of sand – covering the area of a football field - failed to do the job and the surfing is, if anything, now worse where the reef lies. Helen talks to the surfing scientist who diagnosed the reef’s ills with a GPS receiver down the back of his wetsuit, and to local surfers for their take on the Boscombe reef. But Helen has to travel to the Basque Country in northern Spain to find what she’s been looking for. She has the most exciting surf ride of her life in a man-made lagoon, the Wavegarden, in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains, kilometres from the ocean. Over the last decade a company formed of surfing engineers has invented a machine which summons up two sizes of perfect surf waves every minute. “That was a bigger wave, a faster wave, than I have ever contemplated surfing in the ocean,” she says in the programme after two rides in the Wavegarden (recorded with a double-bagged radio mic for the programme). Wavegarden engineering has been exported to an abandoned slate quarry in North Wales where the world’s first surf park opened at the beginning of August. Other surf parks will follow in Texas in the United States, the Middle East and Australia, using the technology. This particular brand of artificial wave engineering might also allow surfing to graduate as an Olympic sport. But is surfing an artificial wave in a land-locked lagoon the real thing? Surfing veterans have mixed feelings and share their thoughts on why riding the ocean is all-consuming. Image: BBC Copyright
