Presented by the Alliance Française in association with the Embassy of France in Australia and Unifrance Films, the 2020 season will screen at Palace Cinemas (Cinema Paradiso) and Luna Palace Cinemas (Windsor Cinema and Luna on SX). This year we are celebrating the 31st edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival which from 11 March until 8 April will be screening a selection of contemporary French cinema. Showcased via 9 distinct categories with expressively piquant headings such as ‘Eternal Odyssey,’ ‘Intense & Unsettling,’ ‘The Voice of the Countryside,’ ‘Magnetic Love,’ and ‘City of Lights,’ the 2020 line-up has a strong emphasis on social engagement and altruistic endeavours. These qualities are depicted in films such as the multi-award-winning Les Misérables, Ladj Ly’s searing snapshot of corruption and simmering tensions in modern-day Paris; School Life, a comedy/drama set within a Saint Denis high school; Invisibles, which follows the unorthodox antics taken by an illegal women’s shelter to avoid closure; Oh Mercy!, a darkly compelling exposé of the human condition as observed by a police chief in Northern France; the poignant rural drama, In the Name of the Land, starring Guillaume Canet as a farmer battling to maintain his dignity in the face of incessant setbacks, and many more extraordinary films. In times of social, environmental and political uncertainty, cinema also looks to heroic figures for inspiration, a trend which is echoed via themes ranging from space travel (Proxima and How to Become an Astronaut); fairytale princes (The Lost Prince and Donkey Skin), political leaders (Alice and the Mayor and Savages); submarine soldiers (The Wolf’s Call) and spirits (Zombi Child). High on the list of 2020 highlights is the international premiere of director Martin Provost’s How to Be a Good Wife. Set at a time when women were still expected to be largely subservient, this delicious comedy stars the luminous Juliette Binoche as the pristine head of a housekeeping school who, when faced with adversity, takes her first steps towards emancipation. There’s also the hotly anticipated La Belle Époque, which tells the story of Victor (Daniel Auteuil) a disillusioned man who is given the opportunity to relive the great love-affair of his youth, and the whimsically romantic Notre-Dame - shot before last year’s horrific fire - about an architect who wins a competition to redesign the Notre-Dame esplanade; a movie which, given events of the past year, is now considered visionary. Breathing life into this cinematic cornucopia will be a host of France’s most electrifying actors, including Fanny Ardant, Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Emmanuelle Bercot, Bérénice Bejo, Jean Dujardin, Fabrice Luchini, Noémie Lvovsky, Eva Green, Jacques Perrin, Gaspard Ulliel, Roshdy Zem, Léa Seydoux, Yolande Moreau, Xavier Dolan, Virginie Efira, Sandrine Kiberlain, François Cluzet, Gilles Lellouche, Laurent Lafitte, Christophe Lambert, Mathieu Kassovitz, Virginie Ledoyen and Lidvine Sagnier, who will feature in films directed by, amongst others, Christophe Honoré, Zabou Breitman, Xavier Dolan, Martin Provost, Olivier Nakache, Éric Toledano, Guillaume Canet, Erwan Le Duc, Rémi Bezançon, André Téchiné, Cédric Kahn, Dominik Moll, Arnaud Desplechin, Cédric Klapisch, Michel Hazanavicius, and Yvan Attal. And in celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Festival will present a restored version of the aforementioned, Donkey Skin, a luscious fairy-tale musical from legendary New-Wave director Jacques Demy, featuring a soundtrack by Michel Legrand and starring the eternal Catherine Deneuve who headlines four films in this year’s programme. The Alliance Française French Film Festival screens at Palace Cinemas Raine Square (Perth CBD) and Cinema Paradiso (Northbridge) and Luna Palace Cinemas Windsor (Nedlands) and Luna on SX (Fremantle) from 11 March – 8 April.

Join us in a new episode of conversations with Dr. Carol Hullin, Ph.D. in Digital Health, masters in law and a global leader in Digital Transformation. In this opportunity, we'll be talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. Probably you use Alexa, Netflix Siri, and Amazon.com for entertainment or to buy your favourite stuff. All of them use AI, which means learning from your interaction with their systems to give you a better service. How far are we from being in front of a "machine" which can interact like a human being, with answers and even feelings like the ones we have? With Dr. Hullin we will also analyse the #ethical and #legal aspects of AI.
This is our second conversation with Dr. Carol Hullin, Ph.D. in Digital Health, an international consultant on digital transformation and senior lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia). Today apparently the data is everything. We constantly produce and share data. How safe is that data? What is your security strategy for your personal data? How much of your personal information is freely available on social media? Are your computer's cameras protected? Does your phone have a shield protecting your data? We invite you to our cycle of conversation with Dr. Carol Hullin PhD in Digital Health, master’s in law and global advisor in digital transformation. In this opportunity, we will be talking about considerations to keep your data safe and accessible.
We proudly present you a series of conversations with Dr. Carol Hullin, Ph.D. in Digita lHealth, an international consultant on digital transformation and senior lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia). A few weeks ago we interviewed her and knew her story of effort, resilience, and achievements. In this show, we talk about the role of women in digital transformation, opportunities, and threats. Talking with Carol is not a linear conversation. Her experiences in life, knowledge, and professional development bring a new vision to currents topics.

Two friends from Bindoon (Western Australia), a town 80 kilometres at the north of Perth, launched a couple of years ago the Northern Valleys Locavore Store. They are Tamieka Preston, founder and former editor of the Northern Valleys News, and Trish Murrell, owner of the Northern Valleys Tax, also President of the Chittering Chambers of Commerce. Their Locavore store was their answer to what they could do supporting producers and other businesses of the region. Developing this e-commerce platform they provide a marketplace between growers and food producers with consumers who want to buy local and on season products. Thus, costumers can buy online and then collect from the shop. At this moment there are tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, diverse leaves, authentic pastured eggs, honey, avocados, olive oil, cheeses, marmalades, also wildflowers. With a unique life experience, Dr. Carol Hullin inspires us with her stories. Conditions such as to be born in Chile in a poor family with indigenous ancestors, as well as being a woman, would be enough to keep her in the cycle of poverty for more than 200 years. Thanks to her tenacity unwavering faith in God, her resilience and intelligence plus the opportunities that Australia gave her, she left that past behind and today she leads digital innovation programs for the health sector in several countries of the world. She has worked for the World Bank, for the government of Chile and has been the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Universidad Catolica de Temuco, Chile. Nothing stops Carol. 2020 is the year of sustainability. In a few more weeks we will be talking about how to be more efficient and reduce our impact on the environment. We are witnessing how climate change has extensive regions with years of drought that puts people's food at risk as well as the balance of today's fragile and stressed ecosystem. In this context, producing our own food makes a lot of sense. Looking for visionaries, we found Danny Hetherington who we asked to visit his house in the Perth Hills to learn what he is doing. We were amazed at the efficiency of land use. Everything is a symbiosis, everything is for something. In addition, almost arriving at his house, there are orchards that he shares with his neighbors. Danny is a generous man. He introduced us to Jo, who is a gardener and who also uses her backyard as a farm. There, she produces exotic mushrooms that are sold under Jo's Gourmet Mushrooms brand in some of Perth's local markets, such as Palmyra Farmers Market. Danny also produces mushrooms and we know he is willing to commercialise his growing production in the next months. During the interview we were tempted with homemade bread, butter made by Dany's father and although it doesn't sound very professional, we tried an exquisite craft beer. In addition to having his farm in his backyard, Danny has photography as a hobby. We were impressed with his ability with the lens and his artistic proposal. For the last few years David O’Connell has been the film critic for X-Magazine (although has seen publication in numerous other publications – The Music, Film Ink, The Brag). A self-describe “geek”, David has a love of film and TV (especially in the of sci-fi, fantasy and cult variety), which he has been fortunate enough to be able to explore in his interviews and reviews. He also has a passion for his hobby of gaming, which he jokingly laments, can often take up a lot of his time as well as storage space at home.
Knowing Miguel Berlanga, Spanish actor, from Valladolid has been a gift to my soul. I laughed during the 40 minutes of the interview and understood that being happy is an attitude, that great challenges have their difficulties, but when you achieve your goal, every sacrifice was worth it... I learned that from a clown. Miguel has participated in dozens of plays, in television series and has also made films in Spain. Today is enjoying one of his biggest dreams: to be part of Cirque du Soleil. Kooza will be in Perth until the 11th of June at the Belmont Park Racecourse. Do not miss the opportunity to laugh and go back to being children. For more information: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/australia/perth/shows
I visited the American artist Bonnie Atlan at her Studio and we had a great conversation. If you have been at Guilford for sure you have visited her shop gallery called “Stories on the Wall” on James Street. She and her taste are big part of the attraction there. She has paintings from her last exhibitions, furniture, silk scarfs all with her designs, actually they have been taken from her palettes; they are absolutely unique and fine. If you go there during weekend for sure you will have the opportunity to meet her and understand why this woman is a fount of inspiration. She is an unstoppable artist and next Friday 26th of May she will be launching her new work so we have another excuse to visit her again. For more information: www.storiesonthewall.com

The science is giving us great surprises and this time is coming from Ben Garcia-Bloj a Chilean physician and scientist that started working with gene engineering technologies during his Ph.D. Passionate about finding innovative therapies, his goal is to reach a much larger number of patients that he would ever do as a medical doctor, treating one person at a time. In 2013 he arrive to Perth working with a brand new epigenetic tool, known as CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), and its potential as a treatment of high mortality rate cancers such as gastric, breast and lung. He strongly believes in the power of the human body to cure itself and use CRISPR to activate dormant genes in cancer cells. Ben has great news and he will be sharing them in Passion Fruit on Air!

One day she took the Plastic Free July and her perspective about how to be environmental friendly changed since then. “Because there is a better way to live than accumulating more and more, and tossing it in the trash when we’re done. Letting go of the excess means making room for new experiences and time for doing what we truly love. Who doesn’t want more of that?” Lindsay Miles in www.treadingmyownpath.com
