Author and researcher Andrew Ross joins me on the podcast tonight 04/04/25 for a huge...
Incarcerated people work for penny wages, and, in several states, for nothing at all. Many of us outside of prisons rely on their labor in areas like repairing roads, fighting wildfires, or clearing debris after hurricanes. Prisoners manufacture products like office furniture, mattresses, license plates, dentures, glasses, traffic signs, garbage cans, athletic equipment, and uniforms. That's just a portion of the work that incarcerated workers make. On today's show, we talk to authors of a new book that explores these labor practices called Abolition Labor , which draws connections between the labor forced on prisoners who hustle to survive on the inside and our precarious economy on the outside. The book argues that, far from being quarantined from society, prisons and their forced work regime have a sizable impact on the economic and social lives of millions of American households. Our guests are two of the authors of that book, Andrew Ross and Tommaso Bardelli. Andrew Ross is a Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU, where he also directs the Prison Research Lab. Tommaso Bardelli is a Research Fellow at the NYU Prison Education Program Research Lab, where he conducts research on mass incarceration, financial debt, and their intersections. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Prison Labor and the Fight to End It w/ Andrew Ross & Tommaso Bardelli appeared first on KPFA.

Pastor B. Andrew Ross presents a message from the life of David about how you can come out with a full recovery.
In this episode of the Joint Action podcast, we explore how injuries to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in the knee can lead to osteoarthritis, especially in young people aged 15-25. Did you know that up to 20% of people who develop knee osteoarthritis do so because of a past injury? ACL injuries are a major culprit, and their impact can be life-changing. We chat with Dr Andrew Ross, a physiotherapist and researcher, and Associate Prof Chris Schilling, a health economist, about how we can prevent these injuries in the first place. They share insights from recent studies showing that national injury prevention programs could save millions in healthcare costs, improve quality of life, and keep more people active in sports for longer. We also discuss the challenges of getting these programs off the ground and why they're so crucial - not just for individual athletes but for society as a whole. If you're interested in how we can better protect our knees and prevent osteoarthritis, this episode is a must-listen! Sermon from Mark 9:2-13 preached by Andrew Ross
Since October the 7th we have seen an eruption of support for Palestinian liberation. On university campuses we find both the tremendous growth of activism for Palestine, and repressive and punitive measures that seek to discourage and curtail these activities. One of the most important tasks for activists is to organize broad networks of support. Today we speak with two people who have helped organize a network called National Faculty for Justice in Palestine, which now has close to 100 chapters in the US. Our conversation ranges from the genesis of this group and its goals, to an appreciation of how activism is now crossing boundaries that had formerly separated people in terms of status, rank, and discipline, and created new kinds of communities and energies that are broadly life-affirming and for the liberation of all.Andrew Ross is a social activist and Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU. A contributor to the Guardian, the New York Times, The Nation, Artforum, Jacobin, the London Review of Books, and Al Jazeera, he is the author or editor of 25 books and more than 250 articles on a wide variety of topics including labor and work, urbanism, politics, technology, environmental justice, alternative economics, music, film, TV, art, architecture, and poetry. Politically active in many movement fields, he's the co-founder of several groups: Gulf Labor Artist Coalition, Global Ultra Luxury Faction, Coalition for Fair Labor, Occupy Student Debt Campaign, and is an organizer with others, including the American Association of University Professors and the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. His books include Cars and Jails: Freedom Dreams, Debt, Incarceration; Sunbelt Blues: the Failure of American Housing; Stone Men: the Palestinians who Built Israel, and others.Sherene Seikaly is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a historian of capitalism, consumption, and development in the modern Middle East. Her book, Men of Capital: Scarcity and Economy in Mandate Palestine (Stanford University Press, 2016) examines British-ruled Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s through a focus on economy. In a departure from the expected histories of Palestine, this book illuminates dynamic class constructions that aimed to shape a pan-Arab utopia in terms of free trade, profit accumulation, and private property. And in so doing, it positions Palestine and Palestinians in the larger world of Arab thought and social life, moving attention away from the limiting debates of Zionist–Palestinian conflict. Her current book project follows the trajectory of a peripatetic medical doctor, her great grandfather, to place Palestine in a global history of race, capital, slavery, and dispossession. Sherene Seiklay is an editorial board member of the American Historical Review, co-editor of the Stanford Studies Middle Eastern and Islamic Societies and Cultures Series, co-editor of Journal of Palestine Studies, and co-editor of Jadaliyya.

There is a lack of teacher education materials that develop equity literacy in content courses for preservice secondary mathematics teachers. In response, we created teacher education curriculum materials for introductory statistics that include an integrated focus on developing equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. In this article, we provide an overview of our materials' design along with a detailed look at one activity regarding racial demographics and tracking in high school STEM courses. We present evidence regarding the positive impact of these materials on the teacher candidates' competency, value, and likelihood of applying their equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. Implications for mathematics teacher educators working to develop equity literacy together with content knowledge are discussed. https://modules2dotcom.wordpress.com Special Guests: Andrew Ross and Stephanie Casey.

David Young talks with The Ghost Whisperer Andrew Ross about the Ghosts of Durham.
How does the automobile—the All American symbol of freedom--become part of a “cascading” process of unfreedom for recently incarcerated people? Livingston and Ross, members of the NYU Prison Education Research Lab, talk about how cars, a necessity for securing work for so many and a symbol of independence and mobility, are enmeshed within interlinked systems that create and perpetuate debt, precarity, and sometimes death. Through predatory lending, unscrupulous auto dealers, revenue-seeking and gratuitously harassing traffic stops and citations, and data systems built into the hardware and software of vehicles that feed into a number of dangerous data bases, the “open road” can become dangerous and deadly, especially for Black and Brown peoples, who often succumb to what Livingston calls the “power of capture.”Against that bleak picture, Ross and Livingston tell stories of support networks and offer us important ways to bring about what they call “Mobility Justice.”“As cornerstones of life under racial capitalism, the automobile and prison exemplify the ease with which the quotidian can become deadly. Livingston and Ross, with the support of formerly incarcerated peer researchers, have produced an extraordinary example of how critical carceral studies can enlighten, complicate and inspire.” Angela Y. Davis.Andrew Ross is a social activist and professor at NYU, where he teaches in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and the Prison Education Program. A contributor to the Guardian, the New York Times, The Nation, and Al Jazeera, he is the author or editor of twenty-five books, including, most recently, Sunbelt Blues: The Failure of American Housing. Julie Livingston is Silver Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History at New York University. Her previous books include Self-devouring Growth: a Planetary Parable as Told from Southern Africa; Improvising Medicine: An African Oncology Ward in an Emerging Cancer Epidemic; and Debility and the Moral Imagination in Botswana. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, in 2013 Livingston was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow.

A dramatic increase in national consumer debt began in the mid-1980s and currently stands at 16.5 trillion dollars, making it a key feature of capitalism in the 21st century. Average household debt today in the U.S. – mortgages, car loans, student, medical, and credit card debt – now exceeds $96,000 and is therefore greater than the median household income. Andrew Ross discusses debt as a crucial labor and social justice issue and describes the groundbreaking work of the Debt Collective.

Andrew Ross received his BFA from The Cooper Union in 2011, where he was awarded the Gelman Trust Award for Excellence in Sculpture. He attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011. He's been a resident and/or fellow of programs including The Triangle Arts Association, The Drawing Center's Open Sessions, LMCC's Swing Space, The Macedonia Institute, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, and he is a current awardee of Two Trees' Cultural Space Subsidy Program. Ross has exhibited in group exhibitions at The Hessel Museum, The Drawing Center, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Artists Space, Center for the Humanities at CUNY, White Columns, and Greene Naftali. He has staged solo exhibitions at Signal (Brooklyn, NY), American Medium (NY, NY), Clima Gallery (Milan, Italy), and False Flag (Long Island City, NY). Ross' work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America, Cultured, Flash Art, Mousse, and the Brooklyn Rail. Ross is a sculptor and new media artist who creates fragmentary constructions with figurative elements and everyday objects. With attention to metaphoric associations that his imagery elicits Ross' tableau scenes oscillate between speculative fiction and cartoonish satire. His figures are chimeric and mythical in appearance yet typically occupied with some form of work and juxtaposed with commonplace detritus. Joining traditional sculpture, assemblage and digital imaging, Ross's works capture existential issues regarding the conundrum of representation in our age of many avatars.
This episode offers a discussion of Andrew Ross' recent book, Sunbelt Blues: The Failure of American Housing. Ross shares his firsthand account of the burgeoning and largely overlooked housing emergency in our nation's suburban and rural hinterlands. Reporting from Florida's Osceola County, he describes families and people of all ages who cram themselves into dilapidated motels or literally pitch their tents in the woods. Adding to these dire circumstances, the people Ross comes to know find themselves also reckoning with psychological trauma, poverty, and nihilism. This compelling interview also examines the causes of the housing catastrophe and suggests what it will take to end it.
Shanna Bennett speaks to three Debt Collective founders Laura Hannah, Thomas Gokey, and Andrew Ross about the formation of the Debt Collective and how far they've come. They also discuss the upcoming Pick Up the Pen, Joe: April 4th Day of Action to challenge the end of the student loan moratorium and demand student loan cancellation in front of the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. Emma hosts Andrew Ross, professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, to discuss his recent book Sunbelt Blues: The Failure of American Housing, on the continued financialization of the housing market in the wake of the 2008 recession as seen through myriad communities throughout the sunbelt. They begin by situating Professor Ross' research within the sunbelt region, moving back two decades to the birth of Disney's Celebration Village, where he lived as he researched the fledgling years of the town, before looking at the rapid global expansion of the affordable housing crisis, and the focus of the coverage centering on urban areas, despite the expansive effect of the crisis on rural and suburban areas. Professor Ross explores how the sharpest poverty increase has been in areas like Celebration in the Sunbelt, as he explores the sale of the town to a private equity firm in 2004 as an early example of what we saw in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis: venture capitalists swooping in and purchasing homes across the US aiming to jack up the rent, refinance them, and generally bleed them, and their communities, dry. He and Emma then look to the effects of this rampant exploitation, as Prof. Ross dives into the flood into local motels and encampments as the levels of poverty grew in this relatively well-off village, eventually making the high school in Celebration the largest enrolled of homeless students. They explore the lower requirements of motels and how this translates into a lack of tenants' rights, especially with the eviction moratoria of the pandemic, before looking to how the immediate need for money to pay for housing pushes people into the more precarious informal economy. They wrap up by taking on the complete transformation of America into a full-on rentership society, as Black homeownership has reached a lower rate than before the Fair Housing Act of 1968, and a complete lack of federal investment in affordable housing since before the Reagan years, while wage stagnation and the Wall St-focused response to the 2008 recession reinforced this, before they walk through the genuinely obvious solution of mass investment in public and full-spectrum social housing policy. Emma also covers Mitch McConnell running on the child poverty platform, and Democrats' inability to capitalize on the disgusting policies of their opponents. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Nomiki Konst as they celebrate International Women's Day, Nomiki dives into Russia invading Ukraine the day she arrived in the Bay of Pigs, and they take on Fox's Oil Tycoon coverage and their deep desire to serve the whims of tyrants and dictators. Wren from Oregon calls in to discuss Biden's violent inaction in refusing to federally take on Texas' family criminalization and separation tactics against trans kids, and Emma and Nomiki discuss Florida passing the “Don't Say Gay” bill. Louie from Palm Springs expands on Florida's insane upper-class housing projects, and Kowalski wraps up with a quick discussion on the recent IPCC report. Tulsi Gabbard ties the invasion of Ukraine back to CRT and queer people in the US, plus, your calls and IMs!
