Making a film is a laborious task that requires dedication, passion, discipline, and inspiration. Seeing the success of other filmmakers, who are more often than not in the same position as us, is not only motivational but can be a guiding light for those making their first film. In today's episode, No Film School's Yaroslav Altunin speak with multi-hyphenate creative Andrew Bowser to discuss:  How Andrew came up with the Onyx character Starting his career as a child actor before becoming a writer and director Questioning his original script after getting some harsh notes  Why having multi-hyphenate creatives work on the film was necessary Working with VFX and puppets and the challenges that came with it Discovering some continuity errors they didn't catch in the final edit  Why Andrew likes a slower editing process  Not looking down on non traditional film platforms Memorable Quotes “It was this revelation. I felt like I had found something to pursue creatively.” [2:23] “I was led to writing and directing purely out of a want for more control.” [5:39] “On indies there's not a lot of time to explore.” [40:22] “Editing for me is such slicing and splicing.” [48:19] Resources: Onyx, The Fortuitous, and The Talisman of Souls Tickets to Onyx The Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls https://www.fathomevents.com/events/Onyx-the-Fortuitous-and-the-Talisman-of-Souls/ Andrew's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@BowserVids Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter  https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube  https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! Chris & Kelsey go back to the well to revive Stephen King adaptions in the form of sequels! The Classic Film: Pet Sematary II (1992) "A teenage boy and his father move to his recently-deceased mother's hometown, where they encounter the ancient Native American cemetery with the power to raise the dead” (IMDb.com). This bonkers sequel is fairly lovable in its weirdness, even if the ending goes a little off the rails. The Modern Film: It Chapter Two (2019) "Twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back” (IMDb.com). Having enjoyed Chapter One in episode 15 of the podcast (or “liked okay” in Kelsey’s case), we were surprised to find that Chapter Two was massively hobbled in what appears to be an attempt to end the story and include every popular ingredient from the first chapter at the same time. The Original: Ringu (1998) “A reporter and her ex-husband investigate a cursed video tape that is rumored to kill the viewer seven days after watching it” (IMDb.com). With much more subtle storytelling than it's famous gaijin remake (if you discount all of the psychic stuff), this incredible original might have you wondering why they bothered remaking it in the first place. The Remake: The Ring (2002) “A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Vampire's Kiss (1988) “After an encounter with a neck-biter, a publishing executive thinks that he's turning into a vampire" (IMDb.com). Nicolas Cage is at his cagiest in this flick that stumbles in the middle with its severe treatment of Maria Conchita Alonso but manages to make up for it with it’s fantastic meme-ness… for some... The Modern Film: The Voices (2014) “A likable guy pursues his office crush with the help of his... talking pets, but things turn sinister when she stands him up for a date” (Lionsgate). It’s everyone’s favorite UL: The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs! Plus, we talk way too much about gender dynamics and dating. The Remake: When a Stranger Calls (2006) “During a babysitting gig, a high-school student is harassed by an increasingly threatening prank caller" (IMDb.com). In 1979, Fred Walton added about 70 or so minutes of content to a 20-minute concept to make a pretty awesome film; in 2006, Simon West tried to get about the same length without adding ANYTHING. CW: Mental Disorder, Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Potential Self Harm Dissociative Identity Disorder is the order of the day on this week’s Pod Sematary. Chris & Kelsey talk for way too long about these surprisingly fascinating movies. 1992’s Dance Macabre asks, “What if the phantom was Freddy Kruger and the opera was a Russian ballet school?” This would be interesting enough, but then it adds, "Oh, and go ahead and throw in multiple personalities while you’re at it.” It’s an angle that adds something to the story, but is that something a good twist? 2016’s (M. Night Shyamalan’s) Split, on the other hand, astonishingly ditches the plot twist and instead explores the possibility that DID patients are the key to unlocking human potential.
