"Instead of the Mahi-Mahi, can I get just one Mahi, because I'm not that hungry?" We watched "The House Bunny", from 2008, with our friend Justin Allison and we want to pledge Zeta! The early aughts were a time the Playboy brand was definitely having a moment and Anna Faris and the filmmakers really capitalized on the wave Hef and the bunnies were riding. Mall stores were marketing the bunny to children, "The Girls Next Door" were riding high on E! and "The House Bunny" had us cackling. We may take a few detours to remember Holly, Bridget and Kendra, but we promise it's all to serve our conversation of this movie. Anna Faris herself channeled Bridget's look (and some mannerisms) in her portrayel of Shelley, the down on her luck Playmate in search of meaning in her life. Anna sets the comedic bar very high in this one and everyone in this cast is really pulling off the comedy. Early outings from double oscar winner Emma Stone and Kat Dennings really show off their comedic talents and all the Zetas are so much fun to watch. The gang at Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions really pull off a "girl's comedy" without punching down - which is refreshing coming from such a bro-centric group. You can tell they were really just about finding the funny and for us - they found it. "The House Bunny" is utterly quoteable to this day and Anna Faris deserves all of her flowers for this killer performance. Netflix takes Adam Sandler back to school! Directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel, and David Wachtenheim, Leo is the animated musical comedy film starring the voice of Adam Sandler. It is the second animated feature from Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions. Jaded 74-year-old lizard Leo (Adam Sandler) has been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades with his terrarium-mate turtle (Bill Burr). When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to experience life on the outside but instead gets caught up in the problems of his anxious students – including an impossibly mean substitute teacher. It ends up being the strangest but most rewarding bucket list ever.
Leo is a 2023 American animated musical comedy film directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim (in Marianetti and Wachtenheim's feature directorial debuts), written by Smigel, Adam Sandler, and Paul Sado, and produced by Sandler and Mireille Soria. The second animated feature from Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions, it stars him in the titular voice role, alongside Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Rob Schneider, Jo Koy, Allison Strong, Jackie Sandler, Heidi Gardner, Robert Smigel, and Nick Swardson. It tells the story of a tuatara longing for the wild and worried about dying who is taken home by different students per the assignment of a strict substitute teacher.Leo was released by Netflix on November 21, 2023 to generally positive reviews.Leo is a jaded old lizard with a heart of gold who's been stuck in the same Florida classroom for longer than he can remember, alongside his terrarium-mate Squirtle the turtle. He's watched generations of students come and go but feels like he's missed out on life. When Leo learns he only has one year left to live, he plans an escape to experience the world. Thanks to a new substitute teacher who task the kids with taking one classroom pet home for the weekend, Leo has a chance to escape. His hilarious attempt to head for freedom and him opening his mouth to break the one simple role that seems to be the theme in the movie, you can't let humans know animals can take, which is pretty dope, like imagine if that was the case in real life, talk about restrain. In Florida, Leo the tuatara and Squirtle the turtle are the class pets of a fifth-grade classroom at Fort Myers Elementary School and are prepared for another year with a new set of students. During a parent-teacher conference night, where the students' pregnant teacher, Mrs. Salinas, announces that she must go on maternity leave, Leo overhears one of the student's parents say that he's old, making him despair that he never accomplished anything with his life. The next day, Ms. Malkin, the students' strict, no-nonsense substitute, arrives and is quickly loathed by the students.Leo is taken home for the weekend by Summer, a girl who is highly talkative. While trying to make his escape, Leo accidentally reveals to Summer that he can talk, and suggests to her that she ask more questions after saying that her constant talking tires everyone out. As a result, Summer becomes more popular among her classmates. Soon enough, the students begin to request that they take Leo home with them, where they share with him their own personal dilemmas, to which Leo offers them life advice. Before long, each of the students have taken Leo home with them and offer them their phones so that they can keep in touch with him.Fed up with the attention Leo is getting, a jealous Squirtle decides to expose Leo by revealing that he can speak to all of them, as he lied that the only ones who could understand him are the ones he was taken home with. Feeling betrayed by this revelation, they decide to disregard him, and Ms. Malkin, having caught on that Leo can talk and that the students' changes in behavior are the result of his advice, decides to take him to her home. While at Ms. Malkin's home, Leo learns that the reason she's grouchy is because she never got to accomplish her dream of being a real teacher, always getting relegated to being a substitute. The next day, the school is having a history fair, and the students manage to win the grand prize of a field trip to Magic Land Park with their reenactments of famous historical figures. When she is praised for her work, Ms. Malkin, wanting to take all the credit, decides to abandon Leo at the Everglades, and proceeds to lie to the students by telling them that he abandoned them, much to their dismay, as they had wanted to apologize to him.As the students head to Magic Land Park, Squirtle catches up with them and reveals that Ms. Malkin lied about Leo, to which she confesses. Upon arriving at Magic Land Park, the students and Ms. Malkin hijack the bus so they can drive to the Everglades. Meanwhile, Leo, while trying to fit in with the wild animals, learns from other lizards that he can live to be more than 75 years old, reinvigorating him. While trying to find a way out, he suddenly encounters a congregation of alligators, but they are successfully scared off when the students arrive and reunite with Leo.On the final day of the school year, the graduating students ask Leo how they could get through middle school without his advice, to which he says that they just have to look out for each other. Ms. Malkin is given a full-time job as a teacher and is promptly assigned to the kindergarteners, with Leo and Squirtle as the class pets. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
"Leo" is only the second animated film from Happy Madison Productions following "Eight Crazy Nights." It has garnered positive reviews for its animation, comedy, voice-acting, and music and stars the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Bill Burr, and Cecily Strong. **(Warning: Some sound bites in this episode contain explicit language)**Long time listeners will remember this show from 2021. To satisfy the multiple requests for this film, we decided to re-launch this episode. Enjoy the show!*****26 Years of Happy Gilmore! Join Kenny and Del as they pay homage to one of the 90s best comedies. After being fired from SNL, Adam Sandler went straight into his first film Billy Madison. A modest hit, Billy Madison proved Sandler had Box Office potential and Universal Studios immediately committed to his second film Happy Gilmore (thank goodness). The success of Happy Gilmore prompted Sandler to create Happy Madison Productions. Sandler has been "critic proof" ever since, because no matter what he makes, we must see it. In this show, the guys will cover history, cast and crew, trivia, and Happy Gilmore's place in cinema over 26 years. The research involved for this Podcast resulted in an overwhelming amount of fantastic information. We tried to get as much as we could into this podcast, but ultimately what you hear is a condensed version for a recording session that could have lasted for hours. Our goal is to inform and entertain you, and as an added bonus, if our discussion piques your interest on Happy Gilmore, we consider our job done. Did you like the PS Scene? Barker had been training with his neighbor, Chuck Norris, and wanted to show off his skills.Although Christopher McDonald has become synonymous with Shooter McGavin, he was not the first choice for the role. Producers were hoping that Kevin Costner would play the part but he was interested in making “Tin Cup.” McDonald almost turned down the role of McGavin as well because he was trying to break of the stereotype of playing villains. After meeting Adam Sandler and realizing how funny the film would be, he agreed to the role. McDonald has since said it was one of the very best moves of his career.Happy was loosely based on a childhood friend of Sandler's named Kyle McDonough. They grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and would sometimes play golf—but Sandler could never outdrive his buddy, which he attributed to McDonough's extensive background playing hockey. McDonough went on to play in the East Coast Hockey League, the British Hockey League, and a league in Norway. He remains friends with Sandler to this day. He's hard to recognize under all of that hair, but Otto the homeless caddy was none other than Allen Covert, Sandler's longtime friend and Happy Madison Productions collaborator who played the title role in the cult comedy Grandma's Boy ten years later. Almost 20 years after Happy Gilmore, Mothersbaugh composed the music for Adam Sandler's Hotel Transylvania, at the urging of his then young kids. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. **(Warning: Some sound bites in this episode contain explicit language)**25 Years of Happy Gilmore! In this show, the guys will cover history, cast and crew, trivia, and Happy Gilmore's place in cinema over 25 years. This is episode #48 of the series called "first watch/first listen" where we do little to no research except for watching a movie or listening to an album only once and then talking about it based only on our feeble memory. **SPOILERS** - - - - The year, 2022. The production company, A24. The name, Kevin James. Imagine this. "This city is afraid of me," he whispers to himself. "I have seen it's true face." Observing the city below he decrees aloud, "The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'no.'" Kevin James is RORSCHACH. On this week's episode the boys are joined by friend of the show, Matt! The fellas discuss the brand new entry into the "Saw" franchise with Chris Rock's "Spiral: From the Book of Saw." They also accidentally talk about the history of the Fast and the Furious franchise whilst talking about the new "F9" trailer. And talk about Adam Sandler's production company, Happy Madison Productions, signing a massive deal with Netflix. And of course, the boys talk about the amazing and visually stunning new (2019 lol) film from the Safdie Brothers, it's "Uncut Gems" baby! All that and more on this week's episode! We're now on Instagram! Give us a follow at: http://www.instagram.com/twinspeakspod/----more----
Hi everyone! We’re closing out the week with a doozy. Anyone who likes the Safdie Brothers knows that they can tell a hell of a story, set on the unforgiving streets of New York. In 2017, I took in their last two features, which include HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT, a heartbreaking, gutter noir look at addiction, and GOOD TIME, a pulse-pounding quest around the city starring Robert Pattinson. It was also their first collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never, aka Daniel Lopatin, one of my favorite musicians. So, I was stupid excited to see today’s film, as long as my heart could take it. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Comics in Motion podcast. Every week, Dave and Chris look at a film which made its way from the comic book page to the silver screen, and sometimes even back again. They look at the lore, the rendition, and everything related, delivering a fun look at each film. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @comicsinmotionp and on Facebook @ComicsInMotionPodcast. They were some of our biggest supporters last year, and we can’t thank them enough! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is UNCUT GEMS, the crime thriller directed by Benny and Josh Safdie, and written for the screen in collaboration with Ronald Bronstein. The film follows Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a jeweler in New York’s diamond market, who has run out of time to payback loan shark Arno (Eric Bogosian). While waiting for the payoff of a lifetime for a rare opal snuck into the country, Howard begins making a series of high stakes bets around town looking for the biggest score of his life. No spoilers. However, I am going to issue a content warning for gambling addicts out there. Gambling addicts may get very uncomfortable watching this film, mostly for its incredible portrayal of the rush. If you have a gambling addiction, please seek professional help. The Safdie Brothers like to deal with flawed characters, specifically those who live in and around New York City. Each character might be flawed in different and unique ways, but one flaw they all share in common is that they end up being the cause for their own downfall. It’s clear to everyone else on screen and clear to the viewers in the seats, but never to the main characters portrayed by the Safdies. Howard Ratner has this same flaw, a fact we could easily surmise from the trailer, but a point that is driven home when Howard is introduced, having just left one important appointment for another at his jewelry shop. Over the course of the next few scenes, we learn two very important points. First, Howard has an incredibly bad gambling problem, which is untampered despite owing a great deal of money to a loan shark. And second, this is Adam Sandler like you’ve never seen him before. The real genius of UNCUT GEMS is Sandler’s casting. The Safdie Brothers have managed to craft a character that fits Sandler in a way that doesn’t make it feel like an Adam Sandler film. And you know what I mean by an Adam Sandler film – that particular brand of attention-seeking late-night comedy which made him famous on Saturday Night Live, made him successful in the transition to the silver screen, and exactly what is expected when producers engage Happy Madison Productions. Everyone either loves or hates these films, but that’s not what we have here today. By contrast to the typical Adam Sandler film, Howard Ratner is the Star Trek mirror universe version of Adam Sandler, right down to the goatee. He even has a much darker profession that still employs his particular set of skills: grabbing and maintaining attention. By the end of Howard’s opening scenes, we’re ready for a very tense journey, one not unlike Voltaire’s Candide, as Ratner’s sheltered and privileged life is catching up with him. Also much like Candide, Howard is constantly rationalizing and re-rationalizing his actions, based on real and perceived score and riches, in a perfect depiction of the gambling addict trapped into the gambler’s fallacy. Around Howard is a mixture of real-life and fictional characters. Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd play fictionalized versions of themselves, the former focused on acquiring the opal from Ratner, the latter being worked over for a few sales by Howard’s assistant/mistress Julia (Julia Fox). Julia Fox’s debut role is incredible, a role written for her by the Safdie Brothers as the film was being written and re-written over the last decade or so. LaKeith Stanfield is also great as Demany, who works as a jewelry consultant to bring in the big name clients to Howard, looking for a break into the jeweler’s world. Idina Menzel plays Howard’s wife, ready for a divorce, and the only one concerned about their children by all measures. There’s even a host of fun cameos for Ca$h Out, Pom Klementieff, Trinidad James, Tilda Swinton, Natasha Lyonne, and Josh Ostrovsky. Howard leaves a huge, disastrous wake throughout the film, especially as the stakes climb even higher. And it’s a hell of a ride. The Safdie Brothers are the masters at maintaining tension, using a combination of long take scenes that maintain the tension, along with microphone dropping scenes that communicate a lot of information very quickly. Much like HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT and GOOD TIME, the subject matter contains a lot of explicit material, often without much warning, but always for great and useful effect. Incredible visuals are included that play with the refracted light within the gems, all driven by Daniel Lopatin’s excellent electronic score. It is a top notch film, with only a few moments throughout where the film felt fatigued, which matched up with Howard’s character, but not with the overall pacing. A very small complaint. My last thought is that I sincerely hope this film begins to help redefine what is meant by an Adam Sandler film. I think we got a glimpse of what might be possible in 2017’s THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES (NEW AND SELECTED), where Noah Baumbach was able to leverage Sandler’s strengths in a more dramatic fashion. He’s not the only independent film to take a crack at a dramatic Sandler, either. I actually wonder how many more films like this might have been possible if Paul Thomas Anderson’s PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (2002) starring Adam Sandler had turned out better. Based on his performance and framing in UNCUT GEMS, I have a feeling more filmmakers will be willing to take a shot. UNCUT GEMS is a pulse-pounding, stress-inducing look at high stakes gambling addiction, New York’s diamond market, and the lies we tell ourselves about the future to justify our present. Adam Sandler is incredible as Howard Ratner, proving he has the range outside of popular expectations, and hopefully the first of many more dramatic roles. Fans of the Safdie Brothers will definitely check out this film. Adam Sandler fans should be ready for a much darker role, dealing with mature subject material, but will definitely appreciate his work regardless. Definitely recommended for all New York street-level crime fans! Rotten Tomatoes: 93% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 89 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 9.5/10 UNCUT GEMS (2019) is rated R and is currently playing in theaters.
This week we watched Anger Management & The Master of disguise. however Danes Microphone decided not to record the second half of the review. So as a Result we have introduced the backup plan: Movie Butts Mini! if something goes wrong we will upload a special episode, in this case half the review. Enjoy! Joe: [00:00:12] Hi Welcome to MovieButts. I'm Aunty Joe Dane: [00:00:15] I am Dane. Joe: [00:00:16] This is a podcast where we basically do a bunch of math and determine the best and worst of a particular topic that we've chose. I think this week it's Happy Madison Productions. What movies did we watch then? Dane: [00:00:30] We watched because it's the first. Is that the first 10 films of Happy Madison Productions? Joe: [00:00:35] It's the first 10 films of Happy Madison Productions. Yeah. Dane: [00:00:38] Yeah. So we watched Master of Disguise and Anger Management. Joe: [00:00:45] So basically what we do here is we calculate the Metacritic score, the Rotten Tomatoes audience and critic, the IMDB user score and box office and budget and determine which is the worst and the best. It was actually quite a surprise for what the best one was, to be honest. I thought Mr. Deeds would have been the best one. I don't notice that. Did you think that at all? Dane: [00:01:12] I wasn't surprised. It was anger management. Because I remember that being really big when it came out. And I can imagine it getting a little more critical praise because of Jack Nicholson. And it's not so stupid. This one. Joe: [00:01:29] No, it's it's hot. It has its really goofy moments, narratively like, I think. But we'll get into that. But I don't know. For some reason I feel like more people know or talk about or like Mr. Deeds. Dane: [00:01:44] Well, I like Mr. deed's more. I think so. I didn't watch Mr. deeds, but I think I, like missed. I liked him more as a kid. I didn't like anger management as a kid. And we'll get into why because I know the reason. Joe: [00:01:56] They're actually quite close on everything except for the Metacritic score. The Metacritic. Yeah. Brought Mr.Deeds down like a lot. You know, so. Yeah. So as a result, we're watching. We watched anger management. Can you give a brief description of anger management? How would you how would you just what would what's the film about? Dane: [00:02:20] Ok. So it's basically about this guy played by Adam Sandler, who is a bit of a pushover. He's like a secretary or something for an advertising firm or whatever. And he licks the boss's ass. He gets pushed around a lot. And he's in, you know, at the beginning of the film, the boss is mean to him and hangs up on him and he's, you know, tries to like suppress his anger. And he's a bit shy. Yeah. And then. He gets into a situation on this airplane flight when some guy takes his seat and it's his whole big complicated thing. I don't want to really fuckin describe the whole thing because it's such a silly scene. But anyway, through a series of events, he ends up accidentally hitting a flight attendant lady. Goes Yeah, goes to court. And the court says he has to undergo anger management therapy. So he goes to group therapy for anger management. And the therapist says that he has internalized rage and then the therapist ends up staying with him. It's it's a fucking actually bizarre film, but the therapist ends up staying with him. And the therapist is played by Jack Nicholson and he's crazy. Jack Nicholson, like he's weird. He's kind of psycho. Joe: [00:03:59] I think a lot of the I think a lot of the comedy is meant to come from the fact that Adam Sandler's character is fine and clearly doesn't need anger management. You know, I think that's that's kind of the I think the crux of the film, as you mentioned. I think it's like you meant to be frustrated and kind of annoyed with him that he has to do all this crap. I think that's like the the main joke, right? Dane: [00:04:25] Yeah. Well...
It’s a Double Feature Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey decide whether or not to check the children in this urban-legend-turned-feature-film combo recommended by listener Alex! The Original: When a Stranger Calls (1979) “A psychopathic killer terrorizes a babysitter, then returns seven years later to menace her again" (IMDb.com). It’s everyone’s favorite UL: The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs! Plus, we talk way too much about gender dynamics and dating. The Remake: When a Stranger Calls (2006) “During a babysitting gig, a high-school student is harassed by an increasingly threatening prank caller" (IMDb.com). In 1979, Fred Walton added about 70 or so minutes of content to a 20-minute concept to make a pretty awesome film; in 2006, Simon West tried to get about the same length without adding ANYTHING. It goes about as well as you could expect. Get more at podsematary.com! Lisa London joins Bob & Suzanne and delivers a message every actor needs to hear! Lisa is the daughter of Jerry London, one of Hollywood’s legendary television directors. She grew up on her dad’s sets surrounded by major Hollywood stars. It was there that she found her show business inspiration. In her teens, Lisa realized she had a unique instinct for spotting talent. After working as a production assistant, she landed an apprenticeship with Lynn Stalmaster and Toni Howard, two of Hollywood's most legendary casting directors. In classic work-your-way-up-from-the-bottom Hollywood fashion, Lisa ultimately joined with Catherine Stroud to build London-Stroud Casting, now a respected resource for studios, directors, and producers who are looking for the “special someone.” After more than two decades casting for major studios like Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, as well as for every major broadcast network, London-Stroud has been consistently responsible for discovering young acting talent and putting them on the road to stardom. It was Lisa’s keen eye for talent that tapped Myley Cyrus for her showbiz debut as Hanna Montana, cast Jennifer Aniston in her first feature film, and brought superstars like Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Jonah Hill, and Selena Gomez to the public’s attention. In this interview, you’ll hear how Lisa came to write From Start to Stardom – The Casting Director’s Guide for Aspiring Actors, a serious step-by-step roadmap to breaking into and thriving in the Hollywood acting scene. She also talks about the realities of casting sessions and the necessity to “make a choice” as an actor, and shares her tips for a successful professional audition. If you’ve ever dreamed of an acting career…if you truly want that starring role…you’ll want to hear Lisa London as she shares her passion.
