We are all too often bombarded by disturbing and distressing media and this can be extremely overwhelming for sensitive people. We can find it extremely challenging to manage the intensity of emotions that are often felt from over-witnessing suffering and violence in our media. As a result, we can spend a great deal of energy intentionally avoiding being exposed. Some things are, however, simply can't be avoided. In this insightful interview, Dr Melanie Joy shares the psychology of why we turn away from the things we desire to change the most and shines a light on common misconceptions around what is required to instigate change. Melanie discusses how easy it is for our nervous systems to become dysregulated without adequate self-care to build resilience around challenging issues and gives practical suggestions for self-regulation strategies. Throughout the interview, the topic is discussed in general terms with particular reference to animal welfare, reflective of Melanie's expertise in this area. The Podcast is Founded by: Julie Bjelland, LMFT, a psychotherapist, author, and founder of Sensitive Empowerment. I specialize in high sensitivity and adult-discovered autism. Rather than doubting God, we need to trust Him. The more we trust in Him, the greater our hearts will fill with Him hope and peace. Our incurable diagnosis might look intimidating, but it will not endure forever. One day, this illness will be healed and we will be freed from it in Heaven. All of this is only because of God. SUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:Your Daily Prayer: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-prayer/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: Finding Hope in God after a Distressing Diagnosis By Vivian Bricker Bible Reading “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).  Recently, I have been in and out of doctor's appointments nonstop. Due to persistent pain and flu-like symptoms, I went to the doctor to try to get help and later had to go to the hospital. With all the symptoms I'm having and the tests that have been run, my doctors have come to the conclusion that I have an incurable diagnosis. What I first thought was a virus turned out to be my body attacking itself in a faulty autoimmune response.  Sadly, this diagnosis will stay with me for the rest of my life as there is no cure. Thankfully there are medicines to alleviate pain and symptoms. Throughout the course of this illness and the long process of my diagnosis, I have had periods where my trust in God deepens as well as I have had times where I question His goodness. Sometimes we have to experience both of these things before we emerge on the other side.  At first, my walk with God suffered due to my intense symptoms. I felt as though God had left me to the wolves and my lot in life was to suffer. During an intense episode of symptoms, I thought I might die of the pain and I reasoned with myself that I was ready to go. There have also been times where I prayed for God just to take my life because I was in so much pain and I wanted the pain to just end.  As time has progressed, I have seen God in my pain. While He did not cause the pain, I know He is helping me through it. My symptoms have gotten better at times and this shows me God is working through the situation. Through continued prayers and petitions, I have acknowledged my dependence on Him. Even though He will not take me out of this situation, He will walk with me through this valley of death (Psalm 23).  Most of the time we think about how much an incurable diagnosis has taken from us, but I try to think about the things it has given me. The things it has given me is a renewed love for things I once enjoyed and the opportunity to appreciate the little things in life. My incurable diagnosis has filled my life with new changes and sometimes I am too tired to even get to talk walks—something I once used to enjoy.  However, on the days I feel good, these little blessings are all the greater. Being able to take an hour walk and feel good is a true blessing. I used to see exercise as a punishment to my body, but now I see it as a gift. Feeling good enough to go out for a walk, go for a hike, or run through a field are all gifts from the Lord. It is funny how we take these things for granted when we are feeling well, yet we crave them when we are ill. When we face an incurable diagnosis, we start being thankful for these little things and these mighty wonders. What might be an everyday task for someone could be a blessing in disguise for someone with an incurable diagnosis.  Each day is a gift, but sometimes our joy has to be taken away before we truly see its beauty.  Intersecting Faith & Life: The Apostle Paul tells us, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). As Paul says here, God is the God of all hope, and He will fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in Him. All of this will ensure our hearts overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Whenever our incurable diagnosis has us feeling down, we need to turn to God. He can fill us with hope as we trust in Him. It can be hard to trust God with hard things, such as an incurable diagnosis, but we need to trust Him with all things. Although God doesn't normally heal people supernaturally in the present day, there is no reason to believe that He won't help us go into remission and fight our illnesses. Challenge Questions: Is it hard for you to find hope in God during difficult times? Are you facing an incurable diagnosis? How might you find hope in Him today? Whether you have an incurable diagnosis or not, you can still take time to thank God for the little things. What might you thank Him for today? “Dear God, coping with this incurable diagnosis has been very hard. Looking ahead, I only see pain, tears, and bitterness. I'm giving all of these fears over to You. I don't know what will happen to me, but I trust in You. Please heal me and give my soul lasting peace. In Your Son's Name, I pray, Amen.”   Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

Elon Musk and his social media company X have pledged to fight Australia's online safety watchdog over posts about the alleged Western Sydney church stabbing. The CEO has accused Australia's eSafety commissioner of censorship and has vowed to challenge an order to remove content on X, formerly Twitter, relating to the horrific incident in court. On Tuesday, X and Meta were issued a notice to remove material within 24 hours that depicted “gratuitous or offensive violence with a high degree of impact or detail”. The companies were warned that if they failed to comply, they could face potential fines of up to AU$785,000 a day. The move is related to the alleged stabbing of bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel during a service at the Assyrian Christ the Good Shepherd church in Wakeley on Monday night. The horrific alleged stabbing was all caught on camera due to the service being livestreamed, which saw graphic uncensored clips of the alleged attack to be widely circulated online. However, the company stated that the posts did not violate X's rules on violent speech. A statement from X's global government affairs team, which was reposted by Musk, said the company complied with the directive by the commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, to remove “certain posts in Australia that publicly commented” on Monday's attack. “The recent attacks in Australia are a horrific assault on free society. Our condolences go out to those who have been affected, and we stand with the Australian people in calling for those responsible to be brought to justice,” the statement read. “Following these events, the Australian eSafety Commissioner ordered X to remove certain posts in Australia that publicly commented on the recent attack against a Christian Bishop. “These posts did not violate X's rules on violent speech. “X believes that eSafety's order was not within the scope of Australian law and we complied with the directive pending a legal challenge. “X has now received a demand from the eSafety Commissioner that X globally withhold these posts or face a daily fine of $785,000 AUD (about $500,000 USD). “This was a tragic event and we do not allow people to praise it or call for further violence. “There is a public conversation happening about the event, on X and across Australia, as is often the case when events of major public concern occur. “While X respects the right of a country to enforce its laws within its jurisdiction, the eSafety Commissioner does not have the authority to dictate what content X's users can see globally. “We will robustly challenge this unlawful and dangerous approach in court. “Global takedown orders go against the very principles of a free and open internet and threaten free speech everywhere.” Federal Health Minister Mark Butler told reporters in Adelaide that the government would take X to task if it wanted to pursue the matter in court. “Australia is not going to be bullied by Elon Musk, or any other tech billionaire, in our commitment to making sure that social media is a safe space,” Butler said. “So if he wants to fight that fine in court, well, we're up for that fight.” There have been calls for harsher sanctions for social media platforms in light of the April 13 Westfield Bondi massacre that claimed six lives. Distressing and graphic footage of the attack was rapidly uploaded online, and misinformation spread. NSW Premier Chris Minns blasted X on Saturday and said it was time for penalties for social media companies to be strengthened. “This is exactly as I'd expect from X, or Twitter, or whatever you want to call it,” Minns told reporters. “A disregard for the information that they pump into our communities, lies and rumours spreading like wildfire. “Then when things go wrong, throwing their hands up in the air to say that they're not prepared to do anything about it.” The NSW premier and other leaders met with Assyrian community groups after the alleged church stabbing and stated that they collectively condemned the violence. “If anyone acts in that way, they are doing it in complete defiance of the religious leadership of NSW and it is against the law,” Minns said. A 16-year-old male was charged with a terrorism offence over the incident and will face court in June. eSafety said it expected platforms to make “genuine efforts” to protect Australians from harmful content. “eSafety is aware social media users continue to upload and reshare distressing content and appreciates it is challenging for platforms to manage this,” the statement said. “We are also aware some platforms are responding by applying technological solutions to prevent or reduce proliferation … eSafety welcomes these actions.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Friday that social media companies were responsible for protecting the community from the spread of troubling content. “It shouldn't need the eSafety commissioner to intervene, to direct companies, in this case X and Meta, to take down violent videos,” he said. “We are prepared to take whatever action is necessary to haul these companies into line. “We've made that very clear because of the damage that a failure to act can have.” - by Jasmine Kazlauskas, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As we come to the end of another liturgical year and conclude our weekly meditation on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, the Church gives us Jesus's parable on the Last Judgment. Jesus brings to the fore the mandate that we have as his followers to perform the Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, care for the sick, etc. But the radically of today's Gospel message lies in the fact that Jesus himself so identifies himself with his beloved poor that he unites himself with them, such that he can say, "Whatever you did (or did not do) for these least ones, you did (or did not do) for me." Imbibing this truth, Mother Teresa would tell her sisters that when they went out to serve the poorest of the poor, they were encountering their Lord "in his distressing disguise." Our conviction that Jesus makes himself truly present at the Mass leads us to seek him there. But when Mass is finished, we must continue to seek him out where we know him to be -- in his poor -- by performing the corporal works of mercy. According to Jesus, our salvation depends on it!

As Peter Levine once said, it is imperative to understand and heal trauma. That's exactly what we aim to explore in this episode. We begin by introducing the term "sanctuary trauma," coined by Dr. Steven Silver. Sanctuary trauma occurs when individuals seek solace and support in what they believe to be a safe environment, only to encounter more trauma. We acknowledge that many of our listeners may have experienced this type of trauma themselves, and we want to validate their experiences. Trauma is subjective and varies from person to person. We provide a psychological definition of trauma and sanctuary, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals who have experienced trauma. Unfortunately, betrayal often goes hand in hand with sanctuary trauma and can shatter a person's sense of safety and security. Throughout the episode, we provide examples of situations where sanctuary trauma can arise, such as mistreatment or dismissal by healthcare providers. We highlight the profound emotional distress that sanctuary trauma can cause, including feelings of hurt, anger, and confusion. This type of trauma can have long-lasting effects, leading to issues such as anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We dive deeper into the connection between sanctuary trauma and its impact on individuals' ability to form healthy relationships and connections. This perpetuates anxiety and trauma, leading some individuals to turn to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms, which can escalate into addiction, causing further harm. Sanctuary trauma can also manifest in physical health problems, such as headaches, sleep disturbances, and chronic pain. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Some think of perseverence as an expression of their own strength - a white knuckle grip to hang on. As Paul concludes this call to perseverence, he gives commands to be obeyed, but ends with this hope, "God is faithful, He will surely do it!" Our confidence is in God's faithfulness above our own. Remaining Steadfast in Distressing Times: We live in distressing times. There is a thin veil that has been placed over our eyes most of the time, causing us to forget that death and destruction are right around the corner. And then there are seasons when that veil is torn from our eyes, and suddenly, fear surrounds us. We are no longer blinded to the dangers of sickness, wars, death, and so many other things. On this side of eternity, our reality seems dreary. But even in difficult times, there is hope to be found! Join Dr. John Neufeld in this 15-message series called Remaining Steadfast in Distressing Times that will dive into 1 Thessalonians, as we study the early Church and learn what they did to remain steadfast through hardship.

Rav Yishak Yosef, in his Yalkut Yosef (starting on p. 501), discusses the Halachot regarding waking one's father and mother. He addresses the case of a father who generally makes a point of adhering to the view of the Magen Abraham (Rabbi Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1637-1683) concerning the final time for the recitation of Shema. The final time according to the Magen Abraham's view is earlier than the final time as determined by the Vilna Gaon (Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna, 1720-1797). The Yalkut Yosef writes that if the father is sleeping as the time of the Magen Abraham approaches, and the child could assume that the father would feel disappointed if he did not recite Shema by that time, then he should wake his father. If, however, the father occasionally misses the time of the Magen Abraham, relying instead on the view of the Vilna Gaon, then the child should not awaken the father, unless the father had explicitly requested to be awakened at that time.If a parent receives a phone call while he or she sleeps, the child should not wake up the parent, unless he knows with the certainty that the parent would be distressed over having missed the call. Thus, for example, if the call is from a distinguished person, such as a prominent Rabbi, and the child can assume that the parent would want to be woken to answer the call, then he may wake the parent. This applies to visits, as well. If somebody comes to the door and asks to see a parent who is sleeping, the child should wake the parent only if he knows with certainty that the parent would otherwise be distressed. Likewise, if a needy person or charity collector comes to the door, a child should wake his parent only if he knows with certainty that the parent would prefer to perform this Misva personally. If he has any doubt in this regard, however, he should not wake the parent. If nine men are assembled in the synagogue and need one's father – who had already prayed – to complete the Minyan, the child may wake the father if he knows that the father would want to be woken to perform this Misva. In all cases where Halacha allows one to wake his parent, he should preferably have somebody else wake the parent, rather than do so himself. One should not bring his father or mother news that would make him/her feel distressed, unless it is necessary for the parent to hear the news. If a child receives word that his parent has been diagnosed with a serious illness, Heaven forbid, and the parent is still unaware of the diagnosis, he should not bring the news to the parent, and should instead have somebody else report the distressing news.Summary: One should not wake his father or mother, except in situations where he knows for certain that the parent would want to be woken. Even in such cases, it is preferable to have somebody else wake the parent. One should not relay distressing news to his parents unless it is important for them to hear the information.
