It’s time for another Old Spooky Club, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stuart Gordon’s horror-comedy classic, “Re-Animator”, which bears very little resemblance to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. We’ve got notes about severed heads, chomped-on fingers, lobotomized deans, weird character motivations, creepy stalkers, a literal blood bath, and everything Barbara Crampton. Jason Snell with Steve Lutz, Tiff Arment and Monty Ashley.
Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond) joins us this week to open up about her journey from cult horror icon to truth-seeking storyteller. Barbara shares what it was like growing up in a carny family, the fractured reality of her parents' marriage, and how she eventually found closure with her father. We also talk about her early soap opera days, her breakout in horror classics, and her reflections on vulnerability, meditation, and balance. A deeply personal and inspiring look at a career built on truth and resilience. Thank you to our sponsors:
After an odd, new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue. As always, the October MOTM is horror themed, but for a time, the horror was our communities indecision. Twice films tied for the selection, executive action resolved the dilemma and "Re-Animator" from 1985 is our film this week. A horror film filled with gore and comedy seems like a perfect choice, but a couple of the guests were less than enthusiastic, and it may surprise you as to who. If your favorite band of the 1980s is Talking Heads, you are going to love this movie. It may be classified as a zombie film, but it is closer to the mad scientist trope of horror, in spite of the large number of living dead. Bruce Abbot, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton star in the film, but David Gale may be the antenna topper that makes it memorable.
WE ARE STILL HERE occupies a crossroads in the horror genre: that of the '70s & '80s-inspired supernatural chillers, the gorefests from guys like Lucio Fulci and the patient character studies of grief popularized in the '10s (anything A24 would touch). These elements shouldn't work so well together but I guess when you got a horror nerd like Ted Geoghegan writing and directing, it simply does.Paul and Anne Sacchetti (Andrew Sensenig & Barbara Crampton) have just suffered the death of their college-aged son, Bobby. In an attempt to lessen the pain, they pack up everything and move to a remote New England house with a strange 100-year-old history. The rest moves as you'd expect: Anne hears noises, sees things shuffling about on their own. She's convinced Bobby is somehow in the house trying to connect with his parents. Her husbands drowns the pain with whisky and denial. Once the supernatural grows too obvious to ignore, Anne calls their friends, Jacob and May Lewis (Larry Fessenden & Lisa Marie) to give the house a once-over and provide some much needed friendship. If you're equally a fan of movies like THE CHANGELING, DEAD & BURIED and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, you'll find the threads tying these elements together. It's patient enough with its characters to allow them the space to grieve while also brisk enough to satisfy any genre thrill-seekers. It's a unique balance that leaves me talking about every individual piece for hours after it's over. WE ARE STILL HERE is a pizza-and-beer-and-shoot-the-shit-forum of a flick and isn't that what we want from a proper Halloween watch?WE ARE STILL HERE's 10th anniversary Blu-ray is available to buy now from Dark Sky Films.---Follow, rate and review THE MOVIES wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow THE MOVIES on Instagram, Bluesky & Letterboxd
In this episode of the show, our Stuart Gordon-Tober continues with a great chat about his sophomore piece From Beyond. Joined by Kevin and Erin, the wonderful duo of hosts behind The Podcast That Wouldn't Die, we delve deep into the thick of things as we discuss how this movie came together, how it translates (or doesn't) the H.P. Lovecraft story to the screen and how it co-exists with other 80s horror movies, like The Thing or Prince of Darkness. We also talk about the movie's BDSM fetish and how it makes From Beyond look like a cousin of Hellraiser, Barbara Crampton as a cosmic horror dominatrix, the wonderful special effects and how everything gets better with more pineal gland action.

We're finally at the end! We've showered you with 1985 horror all month but didn't even get close to all of the great movies from that era. This was simply dipping a baby's big toe into the pool. Here, compiled in one convenient package, is the compleat Conclave 18 examining Stuart Gordon's 1986 H.P. Lovecraft adaptation "From Beyond," starring Barbara Crampton and Jeffrey Combs. As always, our Omnibus episodes are missing the episode breaks, modified opening crawls, and Verifier Andy's breathlessly-recounted "The Story So Far," so if you want those you'll need to go back and listen to each piece of the Conclave. Congratulations to the cast and crew of this film for being nominated for Fangoria Chainsaw Award! Huge accomplishment in the horror community and well deserved! This is a monster movie that I can get behind because of the originality and creativity and not to mention the phenomenal cast: Krsy Fox, Barbara Crampton, Heather Langenkamp, Bonnie Aarons and Chaz Bono. This movie speaks volumes about a mother protecting her daughter and for me, it home. Please give a warm welcome to Jon Sklaroff.I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jon and getting the inside scoop behind his character and the movie. I really enjoyed this interview; not only due to the fact that Jon talks about some really deep stuff about himself and his character, but also what he did in order to prepare for the role. This gentleman has my upmost respect! If you have not seen this movie, it's still streaming on Shudder, and I highly recommend watching it as soon as humanly possible.
We're celebrating the 10th anniversary of queer director Ted Geoghegan's feature debut, We Are Still Here (2015). This is a quiet indie film with some serious star power (Barbara Crampton, Larry Fessenden, Monte Markham, and Lisa Marie?!), as well as great FX. But a decade later, it's the quiet depiction of grief that we appreciate a great deal more. Questions? Comments? Snark? Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor. The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film's story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us. We talk a little about the film's production as well as our reactions to the movie across the years. Hold onto your pineal glands and step into the attic with us, won't you! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

We also revisit Dead Mail before it debuts on Shudder in April. The 1970s were the peak of nunsploitation. It would not last long, but a number of memorable nun horror films were released. While it has not returned to that level, there has been an increase in genre films centered around nuns. Perhaps even more surprising is that they have often been pretty good. The Baby in the Basket has a lot going for it. It looks like a Gothic horror movie straight out of the 70s. It also leans into its wacky premise. From the demonic baby to some graphic sexual content, this movie does not play around. It is unfortunate that as much effort was not put into the writing.Rob Zombie is a polarizing figure in the horror community. While some love the shock value of his movies, others wonder if he really likes horror movies or is just trying to turn everyone against them. So when we heard that his brother Spider One had written and directed a horror movie we were interested. Especially after we saw the trailer which hinted that Little Bites was about a monster that is slowly eating a person alive.Yes, it is early in the year and yes, Nosferatu was an incredibly creepy villain, but did we come across the best Big Bad of 2025? Agyar is definitely a frightening creature. Every scene he is in will make your skin crawl. You cannot wait for him to get off the screen. And this is meant as a compliment. There are some noticeable missteps along the way. For the most part, they can be chalked up to Spider One's feature film inexperience. That being said, they do stick out in and leave a negative aftertaste. But how much do they affect Little Bites? And what does Cher have to do with everything? #frombeyond #stuartgordon #jeffreycombs #barbaracrampton #brianyuzna #cultmovies #cultclassic #cultmoviereview #bodyhorror In 1986, Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton all reunited for their follow-up to their unexpected hit Re-Animator. While Yuzna was keen to do a direct sequel to Re-Animator (which he would later direct himself), Gordon and the rest of the team wanted to do an original story, piggy-backing off what they had previously learned and delivering something fresh and new. Unfortunately, despite a sizeable investment from producer Charles Band, the film failed to recoup it's $4.5M budget, largely due to the fact that in addition to tepid market, the film failed to receive an R rating from the MPAA, who insisted on labeling it NC-17 and thus drastically lowering its distribution potential. Thankfully, the film became notorious on the VHS Video Nasties circuit, and later in 2013, the film received it's much needed restoration, restoring it to it's full run-time by adding every available scene that had been cut (sadly, there are still some sequences that were lost to the annals of time). Join Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold as they analyze what makes this movie such a fun, slimy, gory classic of mid-80's body horror filmmaking, right here on Esoterica Cinema.
