Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor. The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film's story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us. We talk a little about the film's production as well as our reactions to the movie across the years. Hold onto your pineal glands and step into the attic with us, won't you! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

A few weeks back we lamented on the lack of fantasy movies. They were a part of our childhoods that we love and missed. As if on cue, we talk about the news regarding the new Red Sonja movie - another childhood favorite. We also revisit Dead Mail before it debuts on Shudder in April. The 1970s were the peak of nunsploitation. It would not last long, but a number of memorable nun horror films were released. While it has not returned to that level, there has been an increase in genre films centered around nuns. Perhaps even more surprising is that they have often been pretty good. The Baby in the Basket has a lot going for it. It looks like a Gothic horror movie straight out of the 70s. It also leans into its wacky premise. From the demonic baby to some graphic sexual content, this movie does not play around. It is unfortunate that as much effort was not put into the writing.Rob Zombie is a polarizing figure in the horror community. While some love the shock value of his movies, others wonder if he really likes horror movies or is just trying to turn everyone against them. So when we heard that his brother Spider One had written and directed a horror movie we were interested. Especially after we saw the trailer which hinted that Little Bites was about a monster that is slowly eating a person alive.Yes, it is early in the year and yes, Nosferatu was an incredibly creepy villain, but did we come across the best Big Bad of 2025? Agyar is definitely a frightening creature. Every scene he is in will make your skin crawl. You cannot wait for him to get off the screen. And this is meant as a compliment. There are some noticeable missteps along the way. For the most part, they can be chalked up to Spider One's feature film inexperience. That being said, they do stick out in and leave a negative aftertaste. But how much do they affect Little Bites? And what does Cher have to do with everything? Plus, with Cher herself onboard as an executive producer, Little Bites is shaping up to be a must-watch horror event. So, let's dig in and hear from Spider One and Krsy Fox about what went into making Little Bites, the horror of parenting, and why this film will leave audiences hungry for more.

#frombeyond #stuartgordon #jeffreycombs #barbaracrampton #brianyuzna #cultmovies #cultclassic #cultmoviereview #bodyhorror In 1986, Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton all reunited for their follow-up to their unexpected hit Re-Animator. While Yuzna was keen to do a direct sequel to Re-Animator (which he would later direct himself), Gordon and the rest of the team wanted to do an original story, piggy-backing off what they had previously learned and delivering something fresh and new. Unfortunately, despite a sizeable investment from producer Charles Band, the film failed to recoup it's $4.5M budget, largely due to the fact that in addition to tepid market, the film failed to receive an R rating from the MPAA, who insisted on labeling it NC-17 and thus drastically lowering its distribution potential. Thankfully, the film became notorious on the VHS Video Nasties circuit, and later in 2013, the film received it's much needed restoration, restoring it to it's full run-time by adding every available scene that had been cut (sadly, there are still some sequences that were lost to the annals of time). Join Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold as they analyze what makes this movie such a fun, slimy, gory classic of mid-80's body horror filmmaking, right here on Esoterica Cinema.

Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror Show!As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much much more.Francis Galluppi is the director of The Last Stop In Yuma County, a southern-fried, hard-boiled crime thriller that plays within the traditions of Tarantino, The Cohen Brothers, Taylor Sheridan, and Elmore Leonard while still establishing a feel and style all its own. I loved this movie - it's a fun, lean and mean piece of cinema bolstered by an incredible ensemble cast including Richard Brake, Jim Cummings, Jocelin Donahue, Barbara Crampton and many more. The Last Stop in Yuma County is Francis' feature debut and the film caught the eye of Sam Raimi and ultimately led to Francis being handed the reins of an upcoming installment in the Evil Dead franchise which is really awesome news.Prior to Last Stop in Yuma County, Francis' short film High Desert Hell, won several awards, including the Wes Craven Award at the Catalina Film Festival in 2019 while his followup, The Gemini Project, won Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Short Film' at the Burbank International Film Festival in 2020.In this conversation, Francis and I get into the grueling story behind the making of Last Stop in Yuma County, which was a four plus year labor of love involving blood, sweat, tears, and mortgaged houses. This is an excellent account of true indie filmmaking, the importance of preparation, working with an all-star cast, and never giving up. I owe a big thank you to my friend David Guglielmo for putting me in touch with Francis, thank you David. Now, please enjoy my conversation with Francis Galluppi.Prepare Extensively: Preparation was crucial to Francis' process, and his level of prep was extensive and very impressive. Every shot was meticulously storyboarded and diagrammed with detailed blocking directions made months before production began. Ultimately, this prep enabled him to achieve complex and high-production value work on a relatively low budget. Francis also engaged in extensive conversations with the actors, fully fleshing out the script and characters and every line of dialogue over zoom. By the time everyone arrived on set, the team was well-prepared to hit their marks which is critical on a lower budget. Francis' process demonstrates that there's no such thing as over-preparing. All of this ensured a fairly smooth production and Francis' ability to pivot when things went wrong.Set a Deadline and Make It Happen: Francis stresses the importance of setting a hard deadline and committing to it. Waiting for perfect conditions or resources can delay or prevent the realization of a project. He emphasizes the importance of prepping before you're greenlit, which may seem counterintuitive to filmmakers hesitant to invest time in a project that may not happen. However, extensive preparation increases the likelihood of your film coming to fruition. This preparation not only creates a sense of reality and momentum for your project but also impresses producers and investors, making your project appear more tangible and ready to go and ultimately easier to greenlight.Edit Your Own Work. Francis quickly mentioned that early on directors should edit their own work because doing so is a valuable learning experience. It forces you to confront your mistakes and understand what works and what doesn't about your shooting style and directorial capability. Being able to be objective at this level will ultimately make you a better...
