In this episode, Shawn turns back the clock to spotlight the self-titled album from Willis Alan Ramsey, often considered a hidden gem and a "lost album" in American singer-songwriter lore. He delves into the album's timeless charm, exploring why it still resonates decades after its initial release. Shawn reflects on the blend of folk, country, and thoughtful storytelling that makes Willis Alan Ramsey's lone album a must-listen for any fan of roots music.Craig, inspired by Shawn's recent encounter with a local Athens artist who professed his love of shoegaze, shifts focus to the 2005 self-titled debut from Engineers. He unpacks the shimmering guitars, textured soundscapes, and introspective melodies that define this underrated album. Craig highlights how Engineers helped shape a new wave of shoegaze revival, bridging the gap between classic influences and modern indie aesthetics.Together, Shawn and Craig celebrate these under-the-radar records, encouraging listeners to discover and appreciate the overlooked corners of music's rich tapestry. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, this episode offers fresh insights into two albums that deserve another spin.

This week on the podcast, Jackie, Jonny, and Ty are joined by hilarious comic and our favourite Texan, the distinguished Mr. Tim Williams. Tim brought in just about the most Texas album he could, and oh boy, did it deliver. Willis Alan Ramsey has officially joined Fanny in our collection of "How The Fuck Did I Not Hear This Sooner" artists brought onto the podcast. Seriously, this guy rules, and no, you will not find any other album in his catalogue. Willis is the man, but to be honest our conversation focused more on Florida Swamp Trash, Shaq's pitiful free throws, and Tim's defiance of all Texan stereotypes. This is a music podcast, sorta. Sara Seven and fellow songwriter, 'Rain' venture out to the Texas Music Cafe to chat with Jonna Mae and Robert Cline Jr. before they open for headliner, Willis Alan Ramsey.
Joe Ely, Adam Carroll, and Willis Alan Ramsey. What do these three have in common? They're all born and raised in Texas and they have each released fantastic albums that are uniquely Texan. Joe Ely's 1978 album "Honky Tonk Masquerade" is a mixture of old school country, with a touch of zydeco and norteno mixed in, and a collection of songs written by Ely and his Lubbock bandmates, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. Adam Carroll's first album, South of Town, is a debut album by an excellent songwriter who seems wiser than his then 23 years old. He is like an updated version of Bob Dylan from the Freewheelin' days. And Willis Alan Ramsey's so far only release is a classic, a touchstone for many Texas artists to come, with songs that are almost impossible to categorize. We hope you enjoy this little window into the world of these great Texas songwriters and performers.

The other day I was listening to some guys on the radio (yep, I still listen quite a lot to the radio, but that's because we've got a great one here in Dallas - The Ticket). Go to TheTicket.com and download their app so you can stream it free. They were talking about the sweet spot of being on the planet. Artificial intelligence prompted the conversation which had started because of an article that talked about an AI-driven robot defeating 6 players at Texas Hold 'Em poker. The machine had played trillions of hands and learned how to win through deception, which is a big component of winning poker (so I'm told). Then this past week that face app was all the rage with people taking selfies that could project, with alarming realism, what they may look like when they're old. With my face, I don't need no stinkin' app! I've got the real thing. The phrase "deepfake" is now in our consciousness. The question being debated by the morning radio guys was, "How are we gonna ever know if what we're seeing is true or not?" Technology is allowing us to manipulate reality with convincing evidence. Some think the robots - armed with AI capabilities beyond what we may be able to currently imagine - will destroy us. That prompted the notion that being a Baby Boomer is likely the ideal. Those of us born to the World War II vets between 1946 and 1964 fit that bill. I'm one of them, born in 1957 in Ada, Oklahoma - a town not known for much of anything really until Blake Shelton hit big. He even released an album featuring the town water tower in 2014 entitled, "Bringing Back The Sunshine." My family left Ada when I was in the 3rd grade moving to Louisiana. But I've lived in Texas far longer than any other state. I'm still an Okie. It's hard to explain, but I'll try. And along the way let's see if I can bring you some value as you figure out who you are because that's really the subject. Self-awareness. Self-identity. And the realization that somewhere, deep inside, we're still the little kids we once were. Roots run deep for most of us. And it's not just place that follows us the rest of our lives, but it's also time. The time when we grew up. And how. So feel free to think about your childhood. Consider the days of your youth. Reminisce. I hope your memories are mostly good, but whatever they are - I hope you find a way to leverage them to make your future better. Willis Alan Ramsey is a local DFW guy who grew up in the grand privilege of Highland Park, the wealthiest section of Dallas. He released one brilliant album in 1972. On it was a song about another Okie, Woody Guthrie..."Boy From Oklahoma." The chorus goes like this... Just a boy from Oklahoma On an endless one-night stand Wan'drin' and a-ramblin' Driftin' with the midnights and He played the blues and the ballads And all that came between His heart was in the Union And his soul was reachin' out For the servant's dream I really grew up in Louisiana and I have a special fondness for the culture, music, and food of southern Louisiana, but I have always felt more connected to Oklahoma. Sooner football was important early. I recall playing in the leaves in our yard in Ada tossing a football to myself, pretending to be a star athlete wearing the crimson and cream. Sooner state born people were always on the radar. Mickey Mantle, Johnny Bench (even though I was not a baseball fan), Tony Randall, Dale Robertson, James Garner, Ron Howard (hey, Opie) and of course, Will Rogers, the state's favorite son. These were the Okies of my youth. Merl Haggard wrote and sang "Okie From Muskogee" but he was from Oildale. A city in California. But both his parents were Okies who migrated like tons of others during The Great Depression. I wonder what California would be like today if it weren't for The Gold Rush and The Great Depression. Anything with "the" in front of it is a big deal. Well, all these Okies stars of my youth would be joined by country music...
It's been noted that perhaps Willis Alan Ramsey was Lyle Lovett...before Lyle Lovett was Lyle Lovett, mostly, come to think of it, by Lyle Lovett. That's what happens when your debut album mines the intricate details of the emotional barriers we often erect to stave off matters of the heart, and when you do so from stages where a young future troubadour might connect with your style to the point of honoring it. Ramsey weaves and stitches timeless, folksy yarns that sound, in retrospect, a bit like an antecedent to the tumult of the time they were hatched. And then he did something no one saw coming. He never made another album (well, not one that's been released since, anyway). And the one he did make influenced a varied tapestry of performers who've become household names in their own right. Lend an ear and hear where it all began. Bill and Brian welcome legendary Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and acclaimed LA musician Luther Russell for a slightly different than usual episode. We had the pleasure to have the artists themselves provide a track by track commentary! Bill and Brian took the opportunity to head down to Memphis, spend time at Ardent Studios, and chat with Jody and Luther about the making of their album, the self titled debut from Those Pretty Wrongs (due out May 13th, 2016 from Ardent Music and Burger Records). Jody and Luther discuss the beginnings of the band, the cross continent writing process, recording at the historic Ardent using some of Chris Bell's guitars, their influences (such as Willis Alan Ramsey), and the positivity inherent throughout the album before we discuss the entire album, one song at a time. As we make our way through, we talk about how mean Eva Gardner could be (in film), Jody's dog's journey through some health issues, empty Chinese cities, arranging harmonies (that feature Danny De La Matyr!), a great story about a toy cube and sideshow freaks, the influence of Big Star's Alex Chilton and Chris Bell on the songwriting and their presence in the DNA of the music, remaining positive in the face of loss, and so so much more! Make sure to check out the album from Those Pretty Wrongs, due out May 13th from Ardent Music in partnership with Burger Records! www.thoseprettywrongs.com ardentmusic.11spot.com www.burgerrecords.org Many thanks to Addison Hare for making this happen!
2015 kicks along as legendary Australian singer/songwriter Kevin Bennett (ofThe Flood) joins host Jeremy Dylan to talk about the little known but hugely influential 1972 classic (and only) album from Americana artist Willis Alan Ramsey. Along the way, they break down classic tracks “Muskrat Candlelight/Muskrat Love” and “Northeast Texas Women” and chat about how Ramsey made his meticulous sophistication seem laid back and organic, speculate as to why he never made another album, examine his innovative Americana style and reveal which cover of a song form this album was voted the 2nd worst song of all time.
