De Loodzware Jongens on tour @ Rockparty of the YearAfgelopen zaterdag waren De Loodzware Jongens te gast bij dé Rockparty of the Year in een uitverkochte Boerderij Zoetermeer.

Barry and Abigail discuss Rockin' From the Grave and sample Pumpkin Shandy from Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (in collaboration with Soergel Orchards in Wexford, Pennsylvania), Jack from Urban Artifact in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Mind Over Matter from Magnify Brewing Company in Fairfield, New Jersey. We have gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album or Abigail's personal White Album, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Both Black Magic Woman and a cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia by Steve Ouimette appear on GHIII: LoR, but Abigail was mistaken about (Don't Fear) The Reaper's inclusion; in fact, Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll is the Blue Öyster Cult representation on GHIII: LoR, and (Don't Fear) The Reaper is actually on Rock Band, which Abigail has played, but the Hummels have never owned.Listen to our exploration of The Munsters Theme's many different iterations in last year's Halloween episode, New Belgium Halloween (New Wave Halloween & New Belgium Brewing)! Today, we also listened to the version with lyrics and briefly discussed Far Out Munsters, the episode where the Munsters rent their home to a Beatles-inspired rock group.Edgar Winter's justification of naming his song Frankenstein because of its “monster-like, lumbering beat” reminded Abigail of Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.Watch the music video for Addams Groove by MC Hammer.Barry educated Abigail about the famous “More Cowbell” sketch from SNL, which centers around the studio recording of (Don't Fear) The Reaper! In looking deeper into the fun fact from Carlo's Corner about salt killing yeast, we stumbled upon this article on the history and science of Goses written by the brewmaster of Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Boonville, California, a brewery known for their Goses. Per the article, some Goses from the early 20th century had between 130 and 280 ppm of salt. Anderson Valley typically adds about 800 ppm of salt - but only after fermentation. It is thought that as little as 100-150 ppm of salt can cause osmotic stress to the yeast and therefore decrease fermentation rates, but the salt concentration required to completely inhibit fermentation or cause death for the yeast are much higher than humans would tolerate as palatable in a beverage.Santana's Black Magic Woman is a mash-up cover of Black Magic Woman by Fleetwood Mac and Gypsy Queen by Gábor Szabó. Abigail would much rather listen to Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas). While Abigail believes Johnny clearly won the fiddle battle in The Devil Went Down to Georgia, John Oliver strongly disagrees. Watch the boss battle against the devil from GHIII: LoR.We previously discussed the word “pompatous” (found in Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who) during our discussion of Steve Miller Band's The Joker in our episode Cans (k.d.lang and Cigar City Brewing).Read more about Paracelsus and the absolutely nauseatingly eye-rollingly annoying reason he took the name Paracelsus.Barry made Abigail play a little bit of Grandmaster Dee's Haunted Scratch, the original B-side to Freaks Come Out at Night by Whodini.Twilight Zone by Golden Earring was inspired by The Bourne Identity novel, and you may be able to tell this from the music video. The other song from two-hit wonder Golden Earring you may have heard of would be Radar Love.(Ghost) Riders in the Sky is a cover originally written and performed by Stan Jones. Prior to The Outlaws' version, Johnny Cash's version was the most well-known.Up next… Brothers in Arms by Dire StraitsJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Not to be outdone, SpaceX is mad about other people's space junk, France is criminally probing X for algorithm manipulation, and Meta is giving the EU's AI code of practice a hard pass. Amid warnings the AI bubble is worse than the dot-com implosion, we've seen Replit delete a user's database, ChatGPT hallucinate features into existence, and the FDA's own AI fake medical studies. Do you know it's been 50 years since 'Radar Love', first hit the airwaves? Ever thought Golden Earring was a one-hit wonder? Do you know how they got their name? Find out all during this episode as Drummer Cesar Zuiderwik shares his stories and memories. Golden Earring, formed in 1961 in The Hague, stands as one of rock's longest-running and most influential bands, boasting a career that spanned 60 years before disbanding in 2021. Originally called The Golden Earrings, they were inspired by 1960s pop but soon evolved their sound, embracing hard rock and progressive rock, which led them to international fame. Founding members George Kooymans (guitar, vocals) and Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards) were later joined by Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute) and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums), solidifying a lineup that would remain remarkably stable for decades. Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joined Golden Earring in 1970, bringing a raw energy and technical prowess that transformed their rhythm section. Known for his explosive, versatile drumming, Cesar quickly became central to the band's sound, especially on tracks like the iconic Radar Love from their Moontan album. His dynamic and precise playing style added a layer of complexity and excitement, with live performances often showcasing his spectacular showmanship, including high-flying drum leaps and onstage antics that thrilled audiences worldwide. Cesar's impact was evident on other standout hits, such as Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles, where his drumming drove the intensity and drama of each song. His syncopated beats and intricate fills gave Golden Earring a powerful, unique edge that appealed to fans of both classic rock and hard rock genres. He was known not only as a musician but also as a performer with a theatrical edge, sometimes incorporating pyrotechnics and solo drumming displays that made Golden Earring's concerts legendary in the Netherlands and abroad. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Golden Earring continued to release successful albums and tour internationally, becoming a mainstay on both European and American stages. Cesar's influence extended beyond the band, as he became an inspiration for aspiring drummers, known for his attention to rhythm and his ability to adapt to different musical styles within rock. He continued to play with Golden Earring right up until their retirement in 2021, after George Kooymans was diagnosed with ALS. Today, Cesar remains active in the Dutch music scene, contributing to various projects, teaching drumming workshops, and mentoring young musicians. He is also active in another band called Sloper. What the Riff?!?
1974 - August: Little Feat “Feats Don't Fail Me Now”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2024 37:13

This week we are delving into one of the greats of Southern Rock.  Well, they are southern rock if you count southern California.  Little Feat took its name from a comment Frank Zappa made to his band member Lowell George regarding his having little feet. George would become a founder and driving force behind Little Feat, providing guitar and vocals.  Other members were Paul Barrere on guitar and vocals, Sam Clayton on percussion and vocals, Kenny Gradney on bass, Richie Hayward on drums and vocals, and Bill Payne on keyboards and vocals.Feats Don't Fail Me Now is the band's fourth studio album, and it went to number 36 on the US Top LP's chart.  It is hard to go wrong when, in addition to the regular band members you have the Tower of Power on horns, and backing vocals from Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt.  The album was recorded at Blue Seas Recording Studio in Maryland, and it provided two advantages.  First, it had just opened and needed a band for their "shakedown cruise," letting Little Feat record on the cheap.  Second, it was far away from their home base in Los Angeles, which kept Lowell George away from many familiar temptions of drugs and women. While Lowell George would soon begin to deteriorate in health (he died of a heart attack in 1979), this album shows him and his band at the height of their artistic prowess.  The surviving members of Little Feat would regroup in 1987, and the band continues to perform today.Wayne takes us through this little feat of southen rock for this week's podcast. Feats Don't Fail Me NowThe title track received significant airplay on FM radio and it leads off side two of the album.  That driving bass line and funky drumbeat is sometimes called Country Funk Boogie.  The message of the song is one of perseverance and determination to get back the girl the singer loves.Oh AtlantaIf you were living in the metro-Atlanta area in the 70's or 80's, you definitely are familiar with this song.  Billy Payne takes lead vocal duties on this track, and it features Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris on backing vocals.  "Well, you can drop me off on Peachtree, I got to feel that Georgia sun.  And the women there in Atlanta, they make you awfully glad you come."Spanish MoonThis track was written by Lowell George and features the Tower of Power horn section.  This is a deeper cut, but it has a latin groove while maintaining both a bluesy and funky sound.  The origin of the song is a dream George had of a dangerous nightclub in New Orleans called the Spanish Moon.Rock and Roll DoctorThe song considered the hit off the album is an anthem to the healing power of music.  "Two degress in bebop, a PhD in swing, he's a master of rhythm, he's a rock and roll king."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Together Brothers”The Love Unlimited Orchestra provided this title track to STAFF PICKS:Radar Love by Golden EarringLynch's starts our staff picks this week with a Dutch rock band originally formed in 1961.  Lead vocalist Barry Hay and guitarist George Kooymans wrote this single that reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.  The lyrics describe a man driving a long way to be with his love, and communicating with her through a mystical bond he calls "radar love."Keep on Smilin' by Wet WillieBruce features the title track from Wet Willie's third studio album.  It is their biggest hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song itself is rather stoic, encouraging the listener to keep smiling through the difficulties and pain of life. The Night Chicago Died by Paper LaceRob's staff pick is a story telling song that topped the US chart for one week in 1974.  The lyrics describe a shoot-out between the Chicago Police and Al Capone's gangsters, and worries from the wife of a police officer that her husband wouldn't make it home.  The song ends on a positive note when her husband walks through the door.Beach Baby by The First ClassWayne brings us a British band made up of all session players.  They call themselves "the first class" because they considered themselves to be a kind of supergroup of the UK music session set.  This song would be a one-hit wonder, reaching number 4 in the US, but other singles would not see the same level of success. NOVELTY TRACK:Rub It In by Billy "Crash" CraddockThis novelty song hit the top of the country charts.  It may be more familiar as the jingle from Glade air fresheners, where they sing, "plug it in." Rockshow episode 202 Golden Earring Golden Earring was a rock band from the Netherlands, founded in 1961 in The Hague. The band initially went by the name The Golden Earrings and released their first single, “Please Go,” in 1965. They shortened their name to Golden Earring in 1969. Golden Earring is best known internationally for their hit singles “Radar Love” (1973), “Twilight Zone” (1982), and “When the Lady Smiles” (1984). Their music style blends rock, hard rock, and progressive rock, with influences from psychedelic rock in their early years. The band's most enduring lineup included Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute), George Kooymans (guitar, vocals), Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums). This lineup was remarkably stable for decades, contributing to the band's longevity and consistent sound. Golden Earring maintained a significant presence in the Dutch and European rock scenes for many years, with a career spanning over five decades. They released numerous albums, both studio and live, and continued to perform until 2021, when they announced their retirement following George Kooymans' diagnosis with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
