On this week's episode of Life's a Drag, the boys break down a wild World Finals weekend that had a little bit of everything. From frustrating rain delays that threw schedules into chaos to the on-track drama that decided championships, they're recapping all the highs, lows, and unexpected twists from Pomona. Then it's off to Pechanga for the NHRA Awards Banquet, where the sport's biggest names swapped fire suits for formal wear. The guys share behind-the-scenes stories, standout speeches, and all the moments that wrapped up an unforgettable season.
Nitro belongs to the people who build the cars, tow the trailers, and wrench late into the night—and that's exactly where we start. We sit down with IHRA Division Director Doug Foley to unpack how a racer-led sanctioning body is rebuilding big-league drag racing around access, value, and raw excitement. Think eight-car nitro fields, a clean two-day show, and five passes to a $50,000 purse—designed to cut costs without cutting thrills.Doug takes us inside IHRA's class lineup, from Top Fuel Funny Car and Top Fuel to Pro Mod, Top Alcohol, and the fan-favorite Mountain Motor Pro Stock. He explains why IHRA's rules hew close enough to NHRA for cross-compatibility while staying flexible for teams sidelined by expensive mandates. We also dig into the hidden economics of safety recertifications and how smarter formats reduce parts attrition and travel burn, giving privateers a real shot. One of the biggest shifts: IHRA now owns multiple tracks, including National Trail Raceway, Milan Dragway, and Galot Motorsports Park. Facility ownership creates stability, consistent prep, and better sponsor value. Add in serious member insurance—robust liability, accident coverage, and income protection—and the message is clear: take care of racers and the show gets better for everyone. We map the season opener in Ohio, the World Finals in North Carolina, and tease livestream details so you can watch from anywhere. If you care about sustainable nitro, big-inch Mountain Motor action, and events built by racers for racers, this conversation is your pit pass. Subscribe, share with your track crew, and leave a review to help more fans find the show. What would you change to make pro drag racing stronger? Drag racing fans rejoice! The International Hot Rod Association is roaring back to life with a racer-friendly approach that challenges the status quo of professional drag racing. Division Director Doug Foley joins the In Wheel Time podcast to share how IHRA is reinventing itself after years in the shadows of larger sanctioning bodies. The biggest news? Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars are returning to IHRA competition after a 15-year absence, with full eight-car fields already committed to the upcoming season opener at National Trail Raceway in Ohio this July. Racing legends like Scott Palmer, Dale Creasy Jr., and Terry Haddock have signed on, drawn by IHRA's compelling format: $50,000 winner purses requiring just five runs to claim victory, compared to eight runs in other series."We're not trying to copy anybody else," Foley explains, detailing how IHRA has crafted its program specifically for racers who want competitive action without breaking the bank. While top teams in other series might spend three to four million dollars annually running 20+ events, IHRA's five-event national schedule allows teams to participate at less than half the cost. The organization has invested heavily in infrastructure, purchasing five racetracks including National Trail and Galot Motorsports Park, while developing industry-leading insurance coverage that protects competitors with $1 million liability policies. Beyond the nitro classes, IHRA features Pro Mod, Mountain Motor Pro Stock (with larger engines than traditional Pro Stock), and various alcohol categories. For fans of grassroots drag racing who remember IHRA's heyday, this revival represents a return to the organization's core values—providing thrilling competition without requiring corporate backing to participate. The season culminates at the World Finals in North Carolina this November, with live streaming planned for those who can't attend in person. What's your preferred style of drag racing?
