What's made our groceries, housing and everything we spend our paycheck on, especially here in the Upper Cumberland so much more expensive? We're told daily our economy in the State of Tennessee is one of the best in the United States. According to the published budget on our state website we have a rainy day fund of $2,070,000,000.00. However, Tennessee is ranked in the top 10 states for poverty, and the median income is $33,901.00. Good Morning Nashville ☀️ We are beyond excited to be entering the last month of the year with our listeners and supporters. If you have rocked with us all of 2024, we want to say thank you for your loyal listenership. Stay tuned, as we have more stories to be told of men overcoming their mental health in the future. December will introduce our final season/series titled “Black Fathers & Sons.” The goal of this season is to dedicate our platform to black fathers and sons as we bring these men on to discuss the positive dynamics within the relationship that are often overlooked by society. Got a great guest pair kicking off this season, let's get into today's episode! We are excited to bring to our platform the first guest duo for our “Black Fathers & Sons” season. Brandon Sawyers (son) is a graduate of Tennessee Tech University with a degree in Accounting. Although he couldn't make it, we want to give a shoutout to Brandon's older brother AJ, who also has played an influential roll in the overall development of Brandon as a young man. Representing the south side of Chicago, we bring forth Neru “Mr. Lawrence” Gobin (bonus dad) to the platform. A graduate of the University Of Illinois, and majored in Psychology, he began working at a hospital in Illinois. Time surpassed where Mr. Lawrence traveled down south to Tennessee State University where he ventured into starting his career, and while in that process, also meeting the woman that he now calls his wife. We dive into our conversation with these young men and see how mentally they have managed life individually, as well as together. One topic we brought up is how a man can often times be crippled mentally and emotionally when he doesn't have a dollar to his name. Any black man, or man in general, surely can say that it's no fun when there's nothing in your pockets. But especially for black men, we are labeled, stereotyped, and stigmatized daily. Then to not have any way to support your family or yourself? Surely could put anyone in helpless state with their mental health. A lot to take away from this episode, please take some time to listen to a father & son vent today. ✌

Heather and Sabine are joined by guests Jim LaPinska, Mark Pancratz, and Tyler Pavlis for an enriching discussion on developing a business owner mindset. The episode covers vital topics such as: Understanding Business Ownership, Vision and Purpose, Long-Term Commitment, Selective Listening, and Work-Life Balancing. Listen in to gain insights on setting high standards, financial management, and the importance of personalized coaching. The guests share their experiences in coaching, recruitment, and achieving success in the financial industry. Don't miss practical strategies to balance aggressiveness with patience, maintain flexibility, and set clear priorities for long-term success.Episode Highlights:06:46 - I think the first business owner mindset is to have vision. And I'll say that and people hear it, and then they'll go to try it, and it's hard. Like, it's not obvious. So pursuing a vision, creating a vision, which really dovetails into understanding your why and purpose, a lot of people have heard that in some form or fashion. 10:12 - Have different skill sets that are better or different than yours. I think why our business works well between Jim and Tyler and myself is because we are all different, and we trust each other with our own specific skills that are unique, that then rise the business to higher levels than if I was just trying to do it by myself. And so a lot of business owners have to humble themselves to build a team to create a more successful business that goes beyond just their own capabilities.35:15 - It goes back to relying on each other's strengths, trusting each other. I don't have to worry whether this person is going to be a good candidate or not. But what we have done that's helped is in this era of recruiting, we've got to get people through the process faster, and we kind of got to make offers faster. And so we'll make an offer, but there are expectations that need to be met after that offer for it to continue.ContactHeather Price ConsultingTyler PavlisTyler Pavlis, current Director of Operations at Northwestern Mutual – Knoxville.Tyler was born in Knoxville, TN and today lives just 4 blocks from his birth house in a home that he bought from a childhood friend. He never went far from his community having grown up in Knoxville and staying in Knoxville, except for the few years he attended Tennessee Tech University. Graduating at the height of the financial crisis in 2008, he took a position at a staffing firm where he stayed for over 10 years. Tyler grew up a big sports fan and participant playing basketball, football, baseball, boxing, and track. Knowing early in life that the Olympics nor professional sports were in his future, he wanted to find a way to be close to sports out of college. While working as a recruiter at the staffing firm, he initially served as a track coach for a middle school and a basketball coach for an inner city non-profit for about 4 years. Wanting more out of the sports industry, he had the opportunity in 2012 to join a start up adult sports club business that eventually was renamed and co-founded by Tyler named Everplay Sport & Social Club. Serving as its Managing Director and starting in the Knoxville-area originally, Everplay grew to nearly 13,000 annual participants and almost 80 part and full-time employees across 8 states at its peak. Tyler sold this business, location by location, to multiple employees throughout the network between 2020 and 2022 after a 10-year run in the business. Through this business, he met a player named Jim LaPinska,...

Another triple OG joins us on AHJ! We know this is a guest the people have wanted for a long time! Stop for a second……there are serious layers to this episode. Many in the BC hoops community would know John as the outgoing and fun personality he is, however, his story has lots of details you might not know. Growing up in Chilliwack, BC, John fell in love with hoops after the mentorship and guidance of his Grade 5 teacher who made him believe in himself. From there John spent most summers heading to camps in the United States, staying with family and stacking up against American talent!! After two dominant years in high school, the Provincial (Yup, jumped over 3 people!!) slam dunk champion got what he finally wanted; a Division 1 scholarship offer. The offer was from a small school deep in the United States, Tennessee Tech University. Once John steps on campus is where his journey really starts to take twists and turns, and where we will stop typing and you should start listening. Ironically this episode drops over Canada Day weekend, a time that changed John's life forever. After diving into shallow water John had a moment where he thought his life was over, breaking his neck and unable to move in the water he had the literal “flash before my eyes” moment, but it wasn't meant to be for him. He went on to have a risky surgery that worked, rehabbed his way back to health and finished his eligibility at UBC!! Tap in! Corey's work involves tracking duck populations using GPS transmitters and studying their movement patterns. He also investigates the impact of disturbing duck refuges on hunting success. Corey emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between scientific research and public understanding, especially in the field of waterfowl conservation. In this conversation, Cory Highway discusses his research on duck movements and behavior in Western Tennessee. He explains how his team used GPS transmitters and shotgun recording units to track the movements of ducks and analyze their behavior. They found that ducks tend to stick close to refuge areas and are less likely to move if they have a safe area with abundant food. They also discovered that birds in closer proximity to other refuges were more likely to be harvested. The research aims to understand how the landscape and hunting pressure affect duck movements and hunter success. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A research idea, born in a duck blind, matures into a $2 million cutting-edge study, is funded heavily by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency through dollars collected from hunters and shooters, and sets out to answer dozens of questions about the wintering ecology of mallards in the Mid-South. In this episode, Dr. Abby Blake-Bradshaw and Dr. Nick Masto join Dr. Mike Brasher for Part 1 of their long-awaited discussion about the study we've all heard about. Led by the Cohen Wildlife Lab at Tennessee Tech, the study sought to answer questions about winter movements of mallards, their use of sanctuary, effects of disturbance, interactions with food, and how this information can help improve our conservation and management of wintering landscape for mutual benefits to ducks, hunters, and other outdoorspeople. Rural Reimagined is a no-cost program to borrow an EV for two weeks. The only costs are for charging the vehicles and for a three-year Motor Vehicle Record check. It will come with equipment to charge right at home. The federally funded project, administered through Tennessee Tech University, is intended to introduce EVs to under-privileged areas in five states including West Virginia. “My wife and I traveled to Maryland from Huntington, and we were able to make that whole trip at no cost because every place we stopped to stay at a motel gave you free charging overnight,” Walker said. The longtime Stripers announcer and new Voice of the Braves joins the show. Plus:  Gwinnett County has a new fire chief and his appointment is making history for the department. Fred Cephas, who has been Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services' deputy chief since 2020, was appointed by county commissioners to be the new fire chief on Tuesday. Cephas will be the county's first Black fire chief in the department's nearly 52-year history. He will officially become fire chief on April 1. Cephas will replace soon-to-be-former chief Russell Knick, who is leaving the fire department after about five years as chief to take on a new role in the County Administrator's Office. Cephas is a native of Mobile, Alabama, and a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served as a Department of Defense aircraft rescue firefighter. He joined Gwinnett's fire department in 2001. He rose through the department's ranks over the years and served in a variety of capacities. Some of those capacities included strategic planning, accreditation management, operations, and as a licensed polygraphist. He then became deputy chief, making him the second highest ranking member of the fire department, three years ago. Cephas earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from Shorter University. Last week Georgia Gwinnett College counselors traveled to Collins Hill High School to offer seniors at the school a unique opportunity — an instant decision on admission. Called Instant Decision Day, these events allow college hopefuls to meet with GGC admissions counselors, who evaluate their transcripts and help them fill out GGC application forms. Students who met GPA requirements are provided an instant admissions decision on the spot. Twenty-one students were admitted to GGC at the Collins Hill event, which was held on March 2. GGC has offered more than 50 Instant Decision Day events to schools in Gwinnett County and metro Atlanta since September with more to come, Lisa Boone, GGC's assistant director of admissions. Boone said the program has expanded this year to high schools as far east as Savannah and as far south as Valdosta. The school's future plans include expansion of the Instant Decision Day program to Georgia's border states. With the support of the University System of Georgia, GGC recently established a waiver so that students in states that border the Georgia will pay in-state tuition Piedmont Eastside Medical Center welcomed a new chief executive officer this week. The hospital, which is located in Snellville, announced on Wednesday that Larry Ebert became Eastside's new CEO on Monday. Ebert previously served as CEO at Piedmont Walton Hospital in Monroe for the last five years. He replaces Trent Lind, who had been Eastside's CEO for more than seven years but recently left to join Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tennessee. Ebert has been with the Piedmont system since 2017, when he became the executive director of strategic operations at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. He then became Piedmont Walton's CEO in 2018. During his time at Piedmont Athens, Ebert oversaw the planning and execution of strategic efforts, such as the coordination of a master facility plan as well as a key construction and renovation project on the hospital's main campus. And, during his time at Piedmont Walton, Ebert oversaw that hospital's integration into the Piedmont system; worked on the creation of a joint program between the hospital and the nursing program at Athens Technical College's Walton campus; recruited primary care and specialty clinicians; tripled the hospital's medical staff; and launched and expanded new service lines. Ebert earned his bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech University and his Master of Healthcare Administration from Louisiana State University. He and his wife Jessica are the parents of triplets Gavin, Preston and Abigail. Sixteen Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students and faculty members exchanged their Christmas holidays for a mission trip to Guatemala where they impacted the lives of almost 1,000 patients. First, second and third year DO students, along with a DO student from the PCOM South Georgia campus, staffed several clinics located near Antigua, some in remote mountainous areas. Donald Penney, MD, the chair of clinical education and a clinical professor of emergency medicine at PCOM Georgia, served as the chief medical officer for the trip arranged through International Medical Relief, a nonprofit mission organization headquartered in Colorado. According to first year DO student Alice Manning, the trip to Guatemala was “an amazing and eye-opening experience.” She explained that each clinic had several stations including triage, community education, health care and dentistry. In the community education area, Manning enjoyed informing patients about proper handwashing techniques and hygiene, along with providing information about diabetes and dentistry. Manning shared that she used many skills learned in medical school including taking patients' histories and vitals and using osteopathic manipulative medicine. She used OMM for neurologic motor exams, upper extremity range of motion tests, special tests for carpal tunnel syndrome, and diagnosing rotator cuff strains. She noted that a highlight of the trip was using a pocket ultrasound so a pregnant woman could see her baby for the first time. During the trip, the students' routine included debriefing sessions each day after clinics to discuss issues related to the day's work. Some of the students used their free day to hike Pacaya, an active volcano. Manning was fascinated to see a local cooking a pizza on top of lava at the volcano's peak. At the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber's First Friday breakfast for March the organization honored Norcross High School's Corbin Blum with its monthly Character Award. The award was created to recognize outstanding students whose attitudes and actions embody the organization's mission, passion, and commitment to excellence and community action. Blum serves as the Council Service Chair on the school's student leadership council and has been selected for several academic honors societies. He participates in karate, ultimate frisbee, band, and golf and serves as a camp counselor during the summers. He looks forward to attending college. Happy listening!Ray Holloman (often at his most hilarious in tandem with his wife Alicia) is one of those people whose posts cause you to actually cackle. He's witty, kind, silly, freakishly productive, obsessed with dinosaurs— and until 6 years ago, was living in a body that didn't feel like his own.In this episode of Creatures of Change, Ray shares about how transitioning his gender not only resulted in feeling more at-home in himself than he's ever felt, but also equipped him to embrace all kinds of other changes, including leaving a company he'd been with for 12 years. We also talk about balancing change with routine, because the comfort zone is NOT an inherently bad place to hang out. Also, for real, read Ray's bio below… the man is HELLA impressive.
