Negative thoughts are just one tactic it uses. And as you know, they can be powerfully convincing. My negative thoughts are actually quite sweet. I name her Nancy (get it?) and she tells me that it's okay to slow down. My family will still love me if I quit. Which is true. But it's not what I truly want. So I practice mental strength exercises to toughen up that mental muscle. I teach these to all my athletes and include one lesson at the end of every podcast episode.
