Desiree Heveroh at East Brother Light Station in Richmond, California Desiree Heveroh describes herself a steward and keeper of the history of the city of Richmond, California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay region. She was a longtime board member of the East Brother Light Station, which is situated on an island in the strait that separates San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay. East Brother is open to the public as a B&B inn, and Desiree actually lived in the lighthouse for 14 months during the COVID pandemic. She's also the shipkeeper for the historic SS Red Oak Victory Ship in Richmond. Desiree has a new book out, co-written with Victoria Stuhr. The book is simply titled Richmond. It's one of Arcadia Publishing's “Past and Present” series, which offers a special view of American life by placing historical images side-by-side with contemporary photographs. Jen Lewis, fundraising and outreach manager at the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse in northern California, co-hosts this episode.

The seas off the northern California coast are notoriously rough, and no area is more treacherous than St. George Reef, which is the tip of a submerged volcanic mountain about six miles offshore. Construction of a lighthouse on the reef began in 1883. It took nine years to complete the massive 90-foot-tall granite tower on top of a 50-foot-tall base. A powerful first-order Fresnel lens was installed, and the lighthouse began service on October 20, 1892. St. George Reef Lighthouse, California. Courtesy of the St. George Reef Preservation Society. Old Point Loma Lighthouse, photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. Congress authorized lighthouses at several California locations in 1850, including San Diego. Construction began in 1854 on a lighthouse on a high bluff at the end of Point Loma, more than 400 feet above the sea. The lighthouse began service in November 1855. Its active life was fairly short, as it turned out. The great height of the light station was a handicap when low clouds and fog surrounded the bluff, so a new lighthouse was built on the low tip of the peninsula. Darkened for good on March 23, 1891, the original lighthouse ultimately became known as the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Fresnel lens display at the Cabrillo National Monument, photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. Old Point Loma Lighthouse is now a popular attraction within the National Park Service's Cabrillo National Monument. There are three guests in this episode. Amanda Gossard is program manager for the Cabrillo National Monument. Karen Scanlon and Kim Fahlen are longtime volunteers for the Cabrillo National Monument, and they're also the co-authors of the book Lighthouses of San Diego. Point Cabrillo is in Northern California, about midway between San Francisco and the border with Oregon. The point is named for Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, an explorer who sailed the California coast on behalf of Spain in 1542 and ‘43. It took a series of shipwrecks in the vicinity and pleas from mill owners and mariners before construction of a lighthouse began in the summer of 1908. An octagonal lighthouse tower was combined with a fog signal building in an attractive building that has been likened to a small church, built of local redwood and Douglas fir. Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, California. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. The last Coast Guard keepers left in 1972 when the navigational light in the lighthouse was replaced by an aerobeacon that was mounted on the roof of the fog signal building. In 1992, the property was bought by the California State Coastal Conservancy. Restoration followed, and the Fresnel lens in the lighthouse was reactivated. After restoration, the duty of managing the station was handed over to the nonprofit Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association. Point Cabrillo's third-order Fresnel lens was created by Chance Brothers of England. It's one of only three British-built lenses still in use in the United States. Welcome Back to the Faith-Fully Podcast!    On todays episode I had a conversation with my friend Jen Lewis who is the Founder + Executive Director of Purse & Clutch.  Jen shares her story of humble beginnings and the story behind her fashion brand Purse & Clutch.    In Jen's Own Words...........  As I spent more & more time in different cultures, I began to see the difference between a handout & long term development - and the important role that steady employment plays in ending generational poverty.  After grad school, a friend of mine moved to India to help with an artisan group making handbags among other things. That's when it really clicked for me – taking a traditional, indigenous art form, a skillset the men & women already had & connecting them with a market here in the States to provide long-term, sustainable employment.  I sent them a $500 check in exchange for a shipment of block printed handbags. This became Purse & Clutch the boutique in 2011, which transformed into Purse & Clutch the brand in 2016 where we now directly employ artisans Mexico & Ethiopia to make our own designs.  Connect with Purse & Clutch:  Website: https://www.purseandclutch.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/purseandclutch/  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/purseandclutch Shop Purse & Clutch and for all US orders use the discount code: "FAITHFULLY" to receive FREE SHIPPING!  Offer ends October 31, 2020.

In today's episode I interview Jen Lewis the Founder of Purse & Clutch an ethically made handbag company that works directly with artisans in Guatemala, Mexico, and Ethiopia. Purse & Clutch strives to provide thoughtfully designed & ethically made handbags to help end the cycle of poverty and to be a part of changing the fashion industry for good.  Jen has always wanted to spend her time focusing on long-term, sustainable solutions for men & women living in poverty in developing countries with limited opportunities.  She has been drawn to the beauty of international cultures & wanted to join alongside their fight against the systems that keep people in poverty generation after generation.  From summers spent in Mexico & Bolivia to longer stints in Guatemala & Honduras, Jen has seen the need for sustainable job opportunities first hand. Jen started Purse & Clutch in 2011 to connect talented artisans with a market here in the States. She was amazed to learn about how these jobs were transforming the lives of the women & men we were partnering with & realized since she was based in the States, she could facilitate that connection to help them grow. They have the privilege of working directly with artisan groups in Ethiopia, Mexico & Guatemala, designing & co-designing beautiful textiles & styles that are meant to stand the test of time.  At Purse & Clutch, every purchase contributes to their mission of supporting long-term employment for men & women in developing countries with limited opportunities. Their handbags are truly one of a kind, slowly handcrafted by their dedicated artisans. Jen and I chat all things entrepreneurship, getting started and building a business from the ground up, and how to balance owning a business and motherhood.  Jen has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry & received her Master's in Leadership & Ethics from John Brown University in 2009.  In addition to running Purse & Clutch, she & her husband Jonathan do their fair share of running after their daughter Grey. Chad Kaiser (New Dungeness Light Station Association) In episode 2 of the podcast, host Jeremy D'Entremont interviews Chad Kaiser, general manager of the New Dungeness Light Station in Sequim, Washington. Chad is also a lampist (Fresnel lens expert) and preservationist, and a "part two" of this interview will be heard in a future episode. Chad and Jeremy (why does that sound familiar?) talk about the remoteness of New Dungeness, which is at the end of a five mile sand spit, and about the "keeper" program that offers individuals, families, and groups an opportunity to spend a week at the station while performing maintenance duties and providing tours. Jeremy and co-host Cindy Johnson tell the story of the Pharos of Alexandria, the world's first great lighthouse, and a model for many lighthouses that followed. Jeremy and Cindy discuss a 1971 movie, The Light at the Edge of the World, starring Kirk Douglas and Yul Brynner. The film was based on a novel by Jules Verne. It’s one of the rare adventure movies ever made where a lighthouse keeper is the hero. There's another trivia question and a chance to win prizes. Congratulations to Nancy McDowell and Jen Lewis, winners of the trivia contest in episode 1. The correct answer was that Hannah Thomas of Plymouth Lighthouse in Massachusetts was the first woman keeper in America in 1776.
