“While I was doing the Spine, even though I was on my own on the Pennine Way, it felt like I had the other Black Trail Runners around me.”What started as a reluctant attempt to stay active quickly became a passion for Rebecca Devereux. Her journey was fast and within three years she was standing on the cusp of one of Britian's most grueling races. The Winter Spine Race is notoriously difficult. It also had a really convenient finish line just a few minutes from Rebecca's house. It was a challenge she couldn't resist and so she was in. Community Trail Running is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As much as the race was about personal triumph, it was also about community. Black Trail Runners had been crucial to her growth in trail running. When she first stood at the start line of a race a year into her running journey, she was the only person of colour. It was an experience that left her feeling isolated, despite being used to predominately white spaces in her career and community. The disconnect sat with her until she met Sabrina Pace-Humphries at a talk and heard more about Black Trail Runners. That sense of solidarity gave Rebecca the strength she needed, knowing that she wasn't just running for herself. This new community gave Rebecca energy and a sense of belonging in the sport, and this helped her push herself into such a challenging race."I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Black Trail Runners. I wouldn't have been in that race. I wouldn't be on this podium. They've been such an important part of my running journey.”It was awesome chatting with Rebecca and hearing her story. It's so incredible how fast she's taken to the sport and amazing to think what else she might accomplish! I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.Trail Running Film FestivalWe're incredibly excited to be hosting the Trail Running Film Festival once more. Today's guest is Sabrina Pace-Humphreys, an ultra-runner, award-winning businesswoman, social justice activist, personal trainer, running coach and co-founder and trustee of the community and campaigning charity Black Trail Runners. The mother of four and grandmother of three, recently published her memoir, Black Sheep, a story of rural racism, identity and hope. It's fascinating to hear how a short walk/jog in the depths of post-natal depression evolved through marathons and ultra-distance races into Sabrina becoming a torchbearer in the running community.Sabrina opens up about the trauma she experienced growing up as a black child on the poverty line in a small town in England, the impact of her addiction to alcohol, and what led her to the Marathon de Sables aged 40.We explore how it's possible to mentally push yourself through the discomfort and stress of a gruelling race, why women have such success over long-distance events and her running ambitions for the future. Sabrina is forthright about the urgent need for diversity in trail running and the outdoors. We explore the creation and impact of Black Trail Runners, considering the obstacles that runners of colour face, and celebrate initiatives like Black to the Trails that are reshaping the narrative. This powerful episode highlights the significance of community, representation and the collective work needed to create a trail running environment that welcomes every runner, regardless of their background.Thank you to Sport England who support The Game Changers Podcast with a National Lottery award.Find out more about The Game Changers podcast here: https://www.fearlesswomen.co.uk/thegamechangersHosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production

Sabrina co-founded Black Trail Runners in 2020, fuelled by multiple personal experiences and publicised global movements such as Black Lives Matter. BTR is now a fast growing community and campaigning charity that seeks to increase the inclusion, participation and representation of Black people in trail running.Follow Sabrina:IG: @sabrunsmilesFollow Black Trail Runners:IG: @blacktrailrunnersWebsite: https://www.blacktrailrunners.run/Follow 5 Miles Easy:Instagram/TikTok/YouTube: @5mileseasyEpisode sponsor: Runna If you want to up your running game, you can get 2 weeks free with Runna by using code '5MILES' on the Runna app. Hosted on Acast. Sabrina Pace-Humphreys understands what pushing through, putting one foot in front of the other in the face of great pain and on the edge of breaking feels like. She's been doing it her whole life. But it wasn't until she discovered the world of ultra trail running that she truly understood how deeply empowered this had made her. She's now on a quest to discover just how far she can push her boundaries, for herself and for others: to represent and inspire. This is the story of how Pace-Humphreys went from growing up as the only Black identified person in a rural UK town where she experienced devastating racism and isolation to becoming a limit-pushing ultra runner and one of most dynamic, influential voices in trail running today. When Pace-Humphreys began her running journey, she was in the throws of deep post-natal depression. Getting through her first one-mile walk/jog—a suggestion from her doctor—was a tremendous challenge. But it sparked something inside her, and set her on a life-altering journey. In her quest to find her ultimate ultra challenge, Pace-Humphreys has completed some of the most challenging ultra events in the world, including the multiday stage race the Marathon des Sables and the 268-mile Spine Race, in addition to numerous other ultra and trail endeavors. Her next challenge is the 200-mile Winter Downs, which takes place December 2023. Among her many accomplishments as an activist and game-changer, Pace-Humphreys has authored the powerful and important memoir Black Sheep: A Story of Rural Racism, Identity, and Hope; she co-founded the Black Trail Runners; and she hosts the podcast Sabulous. In addition to all that, Pace-Humphreys, 45, is the mother of four children and grandmother of three, has recovered from addiction, and is an award-winning businesswoman. Note: This episode contains issues surrounding mental health. If you, or someone you know, have been affected by any issues raised in this podcast, support and information is available at BBC Action Line. Even the most active of us know how tough it can be to even slide a toe out of bed on a cold morning, never mind put our kit on to go for a run or get to the gym. Perhaps it can be a little intimidating too? If you're running alone you want to feel safe and comfortable. If you're working out in the gym, you might not want to be in a weights section dominated by men. Perhaps you're menopausal or coming back from pregnancy and don't want to be surrounded by lots of other people while you sweat away. Of course this isn't the case for everyone, but it's just some of the reasons why women might falter when trying to create healthy habits in an active lifestyle. Plus with so many online platforms and influencers to turn to in the world of health and fitness, how do you know what's right for you? In this episode of Women's Sport Matters, Katie Smith goes to Muscle Works, a body-building gym in Orpington to look at why and how we exercise. Katie's joined by Kat Merchant, England World Cup winning rugby union star, now turned online trainer, who tells us how she helps clients find confidence in whatever activity they enjoy, and how she's overcome online trolls commenting on her body. Sabrina Pace-Humphreys helped to set up the charity Black Trail Runners following the pandemic, creating a safe community for black people to learn about and enjoy the beauty of trail running in this country. She reveals her battles against rural racism, alcoholism and depression and tells us how running saved her life. Meanwhile Doctor Candice Lingam-Willgoss, senior lecturer in sport and fitness at the Open University, gives insight into how and why we may find creating routine and exercise habits difficult. Plus BBC Sport's Becky Grey details the safety issues that many elite and recreational runners feel when out running alone. We also hear from online fitness influencer Alexia Clark who has over two million followers on social media. We discuss the benefits and pitfalls of influencers online. “What we've tried to do is work with events and work with media to try and represent the sport in the way that we would like it to be, which is one that actually represents the population as a whole.”Sonny Peart is a co-founder of Black Trail Runners. Peart recognized that Black people were underrepresented in trail events across the UK and decided to do something about it. The group didn't have any expectations of where it would lead, they just wanted to take action.“We've been surprised because when we started this, we had no idea where it was going to go. It just felt as though something should be done and if anyone was going to do it, it might as well be us. So a few of us got together and started this.”Black Trail Runners first move was asking races to include reporting ethnicities that were signing up for races. Through the data they found that although about 5.5% of the UK identifies as Black, less than 1% of runners at trail events were Black. Peart explained this stems from Black people having less access to the trails (both geographic and economic), being less skilled as a result of the lack of access, and being underrepresented in trail running marketing and media. Black Trail Runners is working on these issues in many ways and they really just want to make it possible for Black people to get on the trails. “We have regular, free social runs with qualified run leaders around the country in the UK. And we also put on what we call trail taster events, which is an opportunity for people to, yes, go out for an inclusive, lead, run, but also to take part in workshops, learn skills, whether that's around navigation or gear or running technique or whatever it happens to be. And an opportunity for people to experience the trails in a relaxed, inclusive environment where they feel safe. They don't have to worry about being accepted or not.”Black Trail Runners on StravaBlack Trail Runners on InstagramBlack Trail Runners on LinkedInSonny shared a lot more about the organization and what he's training for himself, including running the London Marathon for Sporting Equals and taking a crack at Wendover Woods 100. Black Trail Runners are a campaigning group and registered charity who strive to diversify trail running, encouraging, inspiring and supporting black people to participate. Black Trail Runners has quickly grown into a movement that campaigns to remove the barriers for black people to take part in trail running. About Sabrina   Sabrina Pace-Humphreys is a 44-year-old mother of 4 and grandmother of 3, an award-winning businesswoman, an ultrarunner, a social justice activist and a recovering alcoholic. She is a mixed-raced woman, the daughter of a white Scottish Roman Catholic woman and a Black man.    In July 2020 she co-founded the fast-growing community and campaigning charity, Black Trail Runners, and is also a well-known ultra-marathon runner. She finished the 'toughest footrace on earth', a 250km multi-stage marathon across the Sahara Desert known as the Marathon des Sables, as 10th UK woman and most recently she completed the Spine Race, a non-stop 268 miles race down the Pennine Way.    Sabrina is the author of Black Sheep: A Story of Rural Racism, Identity and Hope “In Black Sheep, Sabrina reveals how she got from there to here: about growing up in a home, a school and a town where no-one looked like her and her subsequent struggle to understand and find her identity; about her lived experience of rural racism; about becoming a teenage mother and her determination to break that stereotype; about her battle with alcoholism and her mental health; about how running saved her life; and ultimately about how someone can not only survive but thrive in spite of their past. Sabrina's experience will chime with anyone who has felt like an outsider. Poignant and eye-opening, and exploring themes of trauma, identity, mental health and addiction, Black Sheep is a tale of triumph: of grit and determination, of hope over despair.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday 7am UK time - Subscribe button so you don't miss out.    To find out more about supporting your favourite podcast and becoming a patron please visit www.patreon.com/toughgirlpodcast.      Show Notes Who is Sabrina Previously chatting on the TGP - July 7th 2020 What was happening in late 2020 Launching Black Trail Runners (BTR) in July 2020 Black Trail Runners - writing an open letter to race organisers  Taking about the issues and the lack of diversity in trail runners Moving house, welcoming a new grandchild, running the Ramsey Round Doing the 3 peaks challenge and seeing me at the top of Ben Nevis (Watch the vlog) Building the community of Black Trail Runners and the impact  Having the uncomfortable conversations Collecting ethnicity data Having a BTR race fund  Taking real action and breaking down the barriers Running the 4.5% challenge in 2021 Working with youth groups Coping with the mental and emotional pressure Running and mental health Running as a form at activism Understanding her why of running the Spine Race The Spine Race  Working with her running coach Damien Hall Figuring out her race strategy and how her race goals changed over time Focusing on the “B” goal - completing the race Focusing on 10k stretches and reaching certain views  Keeping in the moment and not thinking about the full distance Struggling with sleep deprivation and figuring out a new sleep strategy The power of sleep and needing 30 mins of sleep at every checkpoint Dealing with food pain and having to implement a pain management strategy Training for the Spine Race and what a typical week looked life Doing more back to back training runs and weighted runs Winning her first ultra marathon!  Kissing a wall The lessons learned from running the Spine Race “You can do hard things - you can do this” Being on the June cover of Women's Running UK  Book: Black Sheep: A Story of Rural Racism, Identity and Hope. This episode of The Checkpoint podcast is supported by Adidas Terrex. Earlier this year, Black Trail Runners won a grant from Ciele Athletics to send a team to compete in The Speed Project. If you don't know what The Speed Project is, you're not alone. Taking place once a year in non-Covid times, it's an extreme challenge that proudly espouses a ‘no spectators' philosophy. In simple terms it's a running relay. But it's much more than that, because it's a relay over 340 miles, from Santa Monica on the California coast to Las Vegas in Nevada. It's a relay that traverses Death Valley. It's a relay with effectively no rules. Teams self-navigate and self-support, with runners and crew sharing large RVs (that's a Recreational Vehicle, or camper van, to our UK listeners). Technically it's not a trail race, but it has many of the features of one. Varied terrain. Extreme weather conditions. A need to manage nutrition, pacing and logistics. And frankly, it's epic! BTR's team of six flew into Los Angeles a couple of days before, some of them meeting for the first time, and some of them being in America for the first time. Angela, Deo, Jazmin, Laurence, Nethliee and Tony were supported by a three-man crew from the US – Dan, Gordon and Kevin. Having had only 10 weeks or so to train for the event, our team's goal was about challenging themselves, about the experience, and about representing the BTR community in what, despite, or perhaps because of its mystique, is an iconic event. A couple of weeks after they returned from the US, Sonny spoke to some of the team about their experience. First Jazmin, then Laurence, Deo, Angela and Tony.

Over the past few years, since taking his training to the next level due to working with the well-respected coach – David Roche – Adam has podiumed, and won, some impressive US based trail races. He thrives through hard work, dedication, finding joy in the process and having fun while being super consistent with his training cycles. Adam - a mixed race man – was encouraged to go for a trail run six years ago. As often happens while out there on the trails, this 4-mile run turned into 8 miles and just a few months later he signed up for his first 50K. Yes, trail running is that addictive! Nowadays you can find Adam out on the trails of Colorado finding joy in the process, coaching his own athletes, or working – as we do at Black Trail Runners – to increase representation of Black people in trail running. Discussing race used to be something that sports organisations avoided at all costs but thankfully in recent years things have moved on a little, even if the conversation is far from finished. For the latest Playbook Podcast, Matt Rogan welcomes Sonny Peart, co-founder of Black Trail Runners, on to the show to look at the relationship between sport and race. Peart explains how his charity took a data-informed approach to responsibly demonstrate the problem and quickly break down any bias in the running community - while explaining how this method can be applied more broadly. The conversation also covers why it is important to avoid the ‘low cost and easy' approach to creating awareness around implicit and explicit racial prejudice in the sports industry - and how to prioritise action and impact to create genuine change. Finally, Peart outlines how senior leaders can champion change by educating themselves and others, placing critical emphasis on the importance of business leaders taking personal accountability for making this happen. And more good news! The SportsPro Podcast has been nominated for a Sports Podcast Award. If you like what you hear, please vote for us in the Best Sports Business Podcast category here. We're going for some inspiration and motivation to start 2022, as well as some hard-core thinking and reflection. We start with Matt Izzo, who says his life has changed thanks to triathlon.   I'm pretty sure you will be able to relate to some of the things he says about doing his first triathlon, as well as learn something from his mindset when it comes to making a change in your life. Sonny Peart is a runner and co-founder of Black Trail Runners. He explains the reason Black Trail Runners started, the work they are doing and why representation and diversity in endurance sport matters. Something we could all think about more in 2022. You'll hear: 03:20 Helen and Rich give listeners an update into their training for Beyond the Ultimate's 3 day Highland Ultra. 12:10 Start of the interview with Matt Izzo who says triathlon has changed his life. 'The first 35 years of his life was a struggle with obesity, self image and depression. 3 years ago now I lost 75lbs for the third time in my life, but I have managed to keep it off.' When you first lose weight, you get a lot of attention and comments, but when the weight goes back on, nobody says anything. You are so far from where you were that it is really easy to get discouraged.' 24:00 Matt talks about setting himself a target of running a mile that was a shift in mindset. 'It felt pretty amazing. I wasn't sure I could do it. I just remember suffering and it made me think 'running shouldn't be this hard.' 28:43 How a photo reinforced his behaviour. I'm smiling for the first time and it's clear that making that decision changed me in some kind of profound way.' 30:00 Matt talks about his first triathlon and how he came to love it. 37:18 Matt explains How you can make a change in your life by taking small steps. 44:00 Start of the interview with Sonny Peart, from Black Trail Runners - a charity and a campaigning group that is creating change and aims to increase the participation of black runners in trail running. There was a group of more than 20 runners, including a contingent from our friends Emancipated Run Crew, many of whom were running on the trails for the very first time. We were hosted by Camino Ultra and Orion Harriers Running Club. Regis Martin from Camino gave a map-reading and navigation workshop, focused on the route we would later run. Darren Strachan from Camino shared trail running kit advice. Then it was out into the cold of late November for a run along the grass and leaf-strewn trails of the largest ancient woodland in the south of England, with views across London from Pole Hill, 91m high on the Greenwich Meridian. So much fun was had that some of the group went out and ran the route again, finishing with some night-running practice! In this conversation we share firstly some of the key learnings from the workshops that you can apply. And secondly you can listen to some of the great conversations we had on the trails. We have plans in place for more trail tasters events in 2022. We'll be heading to the Lakes, to Wales, the South Downs and elsewhere. The former U23 European Cross Country Champion switched to triathlon in 2012, but admits she felt out of place in triathlon for a long time. But 2021 has been a stellar season for the British born triathlete who now lives in South Africa with her husband Jared and their dogs. You'll hear: 35:00 Why she approached Tim Don for coaching 'he's made me believe I can be a biker' I haven't been good at pacing in the past, but he is so knowledgable and reads about everything that is coming out. 39:00 Patience and the art of going slow. When you are competitive in sport, you almost crave that big push and because I was running at such a young age, it was game on from the word go and I guess you develop habits. 40:35 Emma talks about her first experience of training in Kenya, when she was with British Athletics. 'we were the first white people there and the kids would run along with us. It was such a humbling experience and as a camp, I really enjoyed it as really simple living. 43:30 I feel more like a rounded athlete and I feel like I am understanding the sport more, I can respect my body more. Emma also talks about confidence and believing in herself. 48:30 Learning not to beat herself up after a race, thanks to her husband Jared. "When I had my first bad race with him, he was really relaxed and that has rubbed off on me over time. If you have done the best you can leading up to a race and in the race, then you can't do anything about it. 'A happy athlete is a faster athlete. You have to enjoy the sport and love what you do. When you put a lot of pressure on yourself, you can easily lose sight of the enjoyment if you're not surrounded by good people." 57:30 I feel like I am more balanced. I never had that balance before and I am performing better. 1:00:55 Tim Don has told Emma he thinks she can be a really good Ironman athlete. 1:05:00 Why Emma won't be getting into the gravel biking scene any time soon. 1:07:42 Her experience of being mentored by double Olympic gold medallist Kelly Holmes, through 'On Camp with Kelly' 'Everyone still keeps in touch, she created something pretty massive' and what Emma is doing to give back in South Africa too. This is a behind the scenes chat about the film - This is our London which is available to watch via Youtube via this link: https://youtu.be/jBbV-lP3KNQ When I watched London marathons before I was a marathoner, whilst the leading runners were African. However as a Black British kid growing up in London, I couldn't relate to both British and African running culture. Sport was never a priority in my household, and I wasn't exposed to running clubs, or cross country as a youth. I couldn't relate to the runners from the elites, or to the masses, based on the people that I saw in the area I lived and existed within. However the London marathon was a celebration of the city I lived in. Often it is easy to live in a place but to not know it. The marathon seemed to provide a way to open up and show a space that was often closed off. For example Canary Wharf I remember going there as kid and it was fairly underdeveloped, and it's a world apart from the place we see today. Watching the London marathon on the BBC brought out the best of Londoners and the best of London. I was drawn to explore the unseen parts of my city that I called home. The marathon seemed to unite a group of people that in other days just passed each other like ships in the night. The London marathon means a lot to me because it was my first experience of it I ran 4:55. I earned a GFA 2.56 and last Sunday I ran 3:00:06. So it has taken me on a massive journey revealing what I'm capable of, which I've learnt through running. This translates into other areas of our life's and I hope that it inspires other people to take part. The film aims to bridge the gap between the existing running community and encouraging new people into marathon running. It tells the stories of runners based internationally, as they share their honest, at times funny and truly unfiltered thoughts about what running the 2021 London marathon means to them. Their stories create a powerful narrative showing what truly connects the runners behind the thousands of anonymous runners. Their collective voices show what London, and what it's marathon means to them, and ultimately what it represents to us. I hope that after watching the film that it inspires people to apply to run the 2022 London marathon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is our London, shares the stories of runners based internationally, as they share their honest, at times funny and truly unfiltered thoughts about what running the 2021 London marathon means to them. In part 2 of the Blazing Trails series, The Start Line Girls are joined by Sabrina Pace-Humphries and Sonny Peart, co-founders of the trailblazing Black Trail Runners (BTR), on the day they celebrated the first anniversary of their launch.   The group which was born in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movements of 2020, was formed to create a space for Black runners to experience the joys and challenges of trail running.  BTR actively campaigns for an increase in representation, inclusivity and access to a sport where black people represent only 0.7% of trail race entrants, in a country where they are 4.5% of the population.  On 1 August 2021, Black Trail Runners together with Strava launch the 4.5 challenge, which asks participants to  complete 4.5 hours of activity on Strava between 1-31 August,  (it doesn't have to be trail running!),  then donate a minimum of £4.50  to help more Black people to experience trail running. Some more on the BTR founders:Sabrina Pace-Humphreys is a 43 year old mother of 4 and grandmother of 2. Sabrina started running after the birth of her fourth child in 2009. She initially took up the sport as a way to lose 5 stones of weight gained through her pregnancy, and manage her mental health while living with post-natal depression. By self coaching over time she lost the weight but also found a passion for running and used it as a way to ‘reclaim herself' while living with anxiety and depression. In her early running journey, Sabrina completed a variety of distances from 5K to marathon distance and has travelled the world via the love of her sport – completing New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Edinburgh and London Marathon to name but a few.Sonny Peart took up running in 2012, since then he has completed a dozen marathons, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Brighton. Now a trail and ultrarunner, he completed the Centurion Running 50 mile Grand Slam in 2019, and the 100 mile Grand Slam in 2020/1. This year he became an ASICS Frontrunner. He co-founded Black Trail Runners in July 2020, aiming to increase the participation, inclusion and representation of black people in trail running. When not running or campaigning for diversity on the trails, he teaches at King's College London, and enjoys watching Bielsa ball. You can follow Black Trail Runners on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and sign up to their 4.5 Strava challenge. We have been such a huge admirer of Martin Johnson for some time. This podcast was a revelation. We found out that Martin owes everything to Andrew Smith (CactusRuns)!!!! Seriously we love how Martin took on and beasted the wonderful Thames Path 184 miles and created a new Fastest Known Time. We discovered that Phil Young (Board Stupid) helped inspire and support the attempt and with Patagonia there is also a film being produced that will be available later in the year Having podiumed at Centurion events and helped establish the "Black Trail Runners" we had plenty of fantastic new territory to cover off. It was a real privilege to get some advice on how everyone in our running community can better involve all marginalised groups and Martin has certainly inspired us to do get some more skills sessions and promotional material together to support this. Looking forward to supporting Martin in a possible 2022 entry in our beloved Spartathlon. “At the end of the day you need to think about, what am I doing to be a better person, a better human for my community? Not just supporting Black people, but supporting women, supporting trans. What are you doing to be a better person?” –Marcus Brown In this episode we cover… The benefits and value of having a run coach even if you aren’t a professional runner. “If you want to be one of those people who reaches your best, whatever that is, then a coach is going to be the person who's gonna help you get there. Letting go of the misconception of perfection.  Letting go of the idea of a perfect race. Just focus on doing the little things right. Kids pick up what you do, not what you say. Marcus reminds us of the importance of modeling behaviors for kids because they are watching all the time. He says he’s mindful of getting and training and coming back day in and day out because those are the actions he wants to show his kids. Even when external circumstances impact a race or training, it’s important to accept and move on. He shared that during the Boston Marathon of 2018 when the weather was terrible,  he had to switch off from what was happening.“I had to accept that the weather is terrible and that I was going to get through it,” he said. “Just one foot at a time.” Running is like a mirror exposing our weaknesses. But it’s the practice of facing those things that you learn the most about yourself. Life is challenging and there will be more things that will try and knock you down. More challenges down the road, but if you take a breath and see your own worth, you’ll realize you are good enough and have everything you need to make it through them. As co-founder of Black Trail Runners with Sabrina Pace-Humphries, Marcus says the goal of the group is to one day not have to have it exist with that name, but right now it is very much needed in order to help people feel comfortable running in outdoor spaces and feel included. “We just need to appreciate that if someone's lived experience isn't the same as ours, we should still listen to them and we should still trying to pay them some kind of respect.” Inclusion needs to transcend just being included on covers of magazines. Of course, that’s an important step, but the real questions are: Who is making decisions to put the person in the magazine? Who's making decisions about what they wear? Who's making decisions of how it's presented? We need to have that kind of representation in the places that matter. Sabrina Pace-Humphreys – Ultrarunning mum of 4 and co-founder of Black Trail Runners. Sabrina is a 42 year old mother of 4 and grandmother of 2. She started running after the birth of her fourth child in 2009. She initially took up the sport as a way to lose 5 stones of weight gained through her pregnancy, and manage her mental health while living with post-natal depression. By self coaching over time she lost the weight but also found a passion for running and used it as a way to ‘reclaim herself' while living with anxiety and depression. In her early running journey, Sabrina completed a variety of distances from 5K to marathon distance and has travelled the world via the love of her sport – completing New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Edinburgh and London Marathon to name but a few. In 2016 Sabrina increased her distance to ultra marathon and found a love of trail running while preparing to run the toughest footrace on earth – the Marathon Des Sables – a 250K multi-day ultramarathon in the Sahara desert. This was an adventure she wanted to ‘compete' in as a goal event to celebrate her 40th birthday. In 2018, Sabrina completed this race as 13th UK woman to cross the finish line. This sparked something inside her to want to help others use running, and trail running in particular, to manage their mental health. In July 2020 following the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, a rise sparked by the murder of runner Ahmaud Arbery amongst others, Sabrina co-found the fast growing community and campaigning group – Black Trail Runners. A trail running community for black people who want to experience trail running. Whether new to the discipline, or an experienced trail runner, this communities common goal is to provide a safe space for Black men and women who are looking to connect, get support from and be inspired via a community of Black men and women, and white allies, who are passionate about trail running and inclusivity for ALL.*** ****To follow Sabrina's running visit her on Instagram @sabrunsmiles (https://www.instagram.com/sabrunsmiles/) **For more information on Black Trail Runners, please visit them on IG at @blacktrailrunners (https://www.instagram.com/blacktrailr...) You can also visit them on the web: Black Trail Runners (https://www.blacktrailrunners.run)*** ****Host, Coach Pilar Arthur-Snead, https://linktr.ee/mindfulrunner **** Leave me a message at https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead/... ***Please Like and Subscribe to The Last Tenth Podcast on You Tube: https://bit.ly/37foa2f ***Listen toThe Last Tenth Podcast on: Anchor.fm (https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead), Apple Podcasts (https://apple.co/3lXB5ek), Please be sure to leave your positive feedback and 5 star review on Apple Podcasts! Welcome to episode 4, series 2 of the Women's Running podcast. In this episode we speak to Sabrina Pace-Humphreys. We weren't sure what to expect by the time we spoke to her: at that time she had garnered quite a bit of interest partially because she's one of the founders of Black Trail Runners, and had already been a cover star on a different running magazine. What we didn't expect was just how inspiring, how brilliant, how funny she was: in many ways, Sabrina has been one of the most fun conversations we've had but also one of the most revealing. She challenges us to have the balls to get out there and actually do something. Not just listen, not just act surprised when we're told that few black runners are taking up trail running (or even running), and to not just accept the lack of diversity at the start line of races. She wants us to demand change from event directors, and to question decisions, and to question our own motives. She is so passionate, so wonderful, and incredibly moving. She talks here not just about setting up Black Trail Runners, but also her history with running, taking on the Marathon des Sables (and besting it), and how “small steps lead to massive change”.@sabrunsmiles@blacktrailrunnersRead more about Sabrina in our interview with her.Runderwear Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=67575412)

“Running isn't always comfortable. It's not always like some sort of nirvana that you're jumping out of bed and clicking your heels to do. But having those kind of whys really kind of reframed me rather than having one why of, ‘it must be about the medal, it must be about the time.' You have different whys…you need a pocket full of whys basically depending on the day to achieve your goals, really.” Marcus Brown, known as @themarathonmarcus on Instagram, is a six-star World Marathon Majors finisher from London. He hosts the A Runner's Life Podcast, and he's one of the co-founders of Black Trail Runners, a UK-based community and campaigning group that seeks to increase the inclusion, participation and representation of Black people in trail running. We covered a lot of ground in this episode. Marcus told me about his journey into running, how his relationship with it has evolved over the years, and why he views the marathon as a metaphor for life. We also discussed his relationship to anxiety, learning to be happy within yourself, and why it's important to have a pocket full of whys. He also told me about growing up black in the UK and why he had chip on his shoulder as a kid, launching Black Trail Runners and the fight for intentional inclusion in the sport, and the importance of opening up access to running and creating positive change in our local communities. We also geeked out about podcasting, talked about Marcus' relationship with Instagram, where he has a sizable following, and much more. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by New Balance. 5 simple things we can do to increase trail running diversity - Taz Anwar (Twitter @ThisHijabiRuns)

I'm really looking forward to this chat on some super positive, easy things we can all do to increase diversity in trail running with Tazneem (Taz) Anwar, an Asics Frontrunner, mum of 3, hijab-wearing runner. Taz is @ThisHijabiRuns on Twitter, so do follow her there for fun, inspiring and thought-provoking posts.  Original YouTube version https://youtu.be/_w03LZgH1ss Taz is a strong, determined woman whose mission is to show that wearing a hijab is not a barrier to being physically active. She wants to encourage women to get outdoors and be active, particularly women who for cultural reasons feel they can't be active because of how they dress.   Taz started running on a family holiday to get fitter and lose weight after having her three children, then she plucked up the courage to do her first parkrun even though she was worried about how people would view her for wearing the hijab. She was relieved to find they were all very friendly and she is now a regular parkrunner and volunteer marshal.   In October 2019 she ran her first marathon, something she never thought she would do, and now she is discovering the joy of trail running. Whoop! She and I plan to meet in the Peaks this November to make a film to encourage more BAME women in particular to try trails. https://thishijabiruns.wordpress.com/   Some thoughts from me If you've not known me for long you might think I'm just jumping on the current diversity bandwagon, but I believe that if that bandwagon is a good cause requiring more attention, bloomin' do the right thing and jump on it!   Throughout my time on Trail Running magazine (2010-2017) I made an effort to include a diverse range of real runners, from old to young, fat to thin, black to white and everything in between, just because I thought it was the right thing to do to encourage everyone regardless of what they looked like and their ability level.   Finding people of colour who ran trails was the hardest part of this. There are so many more white people who run trails and therefore more available for photoshoot dates. We managed it hopefully in a few pics each issue, but still my photoshoot volunteers and contacts were white in the majority. And only one cover that I remember featured a person of colour.   Then for my last photoshoot for a trail running brand in Feb 2020 even though I tried to make it not all white, the people I knew and contacted from different ethnic backgrounds could not make the date. So the shoot ended up all white. This shows how easy it is to let this happen, even when you're a person who claims to aim for diversity.   So when the news came about the shocking and shameful death of George Floyd in May 2020, it was a wake up call. To help fight racism I decided I must put a lot more effort in to representing a diverse range of trail runners.   I read "Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race". I joined the Black Trail Runners on Facebook. I reached out via social media and got 20+ more potential photoshoot contacts for the future. That list is open for more if you want to get in touch @WildGingerRuns on Insta.   A few people (including people of colour who already run trails) wrote to me to say my aim is wrong, patronising, damaging even. That positive discrimination isn't the answer. That there aren't barriers to trail running. But having listened to and read about other people of colour's experiences, I understand there are barriers that you might not be able see if you are already a confident trail runner of whatever colour. There are also many who do not have the confidence to try an activity (not just running) if they don't see someone like them doing it first.   So I believe we should show trail running as the welcoming and friendly sport it is by representing as many different types of runners as possible in the media surrounding it. It's great to increase the volume of photos, videos, interviews and podcasts with people of colour as a way to encourage more people from all backgrounds into this super healthy sport.   So that's where I'm at on diversity in trail running. I hope you will join me in welcoming and encouraging anyone from any background, any shape, size, age and ability into this exciting, fantastic sport that is so good for both body & mind.   Claire ---- This film is self-funded.
