Reality: There are numerous high-protein plant-based foods like lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, tofu, tempeh, and beans. Athletes can meet their protein needs with a balanced plant-based diet, and protein deficiency is rare in vegan athletes who consume a variety of foods (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-all-athletes-should-eat-plant-based-diets/ ). We can also touch on combining different sources (like rice and beans) to get complete proteins! "Plant-Based Athletes Can't Build Muscle" Myth: Some believe muscle gain and strength building are much harder on a vegan diet due to a lack of animal-based protein. Reality: Studies show that athletes can build and maintain muscle mass effectively on a plant-based diet as long as they consume enough calories and protein (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-gladiator-diet-how-vegetarian-athletes-stack-up/ ). Many successful vegan athletes, like bodybuilders and endurance runners, are living proof of this. Plant-based proteins like tofu, seitan, and protein powders made from pea or rice protein can be just as effective. Fleshing-eating regimens like the Keto Diet have also been shown to be detrimental to the human body https://nutritionfacts.org/video/keto-diets-muscle-growth-and-bone-density/ "You Won't Get Enough Energy or Carbs on a Vegan Diet" Myth: There's a misconception that plant-based diets lack sufficient carbs to fuel long-distance running or endurance sports. Reality: Many plant-based foods are rich in complex carbohydrates, including oats, sweet potatoes, fruits, quinoa, and legumes. Carbs are the primary source of energy for endurance athletes, and plant-based diets actually excel in providing these carbs in a healthy, easily digestible form (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/vegetarian-muscle-power-strength-and-endurance/ ). "Vegan Athletes Are More Prone to Injuries Due to Nutrient Deficiencies" Myth: Some suggest that vegan athletes are more likely to experience injuries due to deficiencies in calcium, iron, or other nutrients. Reality: A well-planned plant-based diet can provide all the necessary nutrients to support strong bones, muscles, and overall recovery (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/reducing-muscle-soreness-with-berries/ ). For example:Calcium: Can be found in fortified plant milks, tofu, leafy greens, and almonds. Iron: Legumes, lentils, chickpeas, and fortified cereals provide plant-based iron, and pairing with vitamin C (e.g., citrus fruits) boosts absorption. "You Need Animal Products for Omega-3s and Joint Health" Myth: People often believe that athletes need fish or fish oil to get enough omega-3 fatty acids for joint health. Reality: Omega-3s can easily be obtained from plant-based sources like flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and algae-based supplements. These options are great for reducing inflammation and supporting joint health without relying on animal products (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/blog/do-flaxseeds-offer-sufficient-omega-3s-for-our-heart/ ). "Plant-Based Athletes Get Tired More Easily Due to Low Iron" Myth: There's a belief that vegans struggle with iron deficiency, which can lead to fatigue. Reality: Plant-based athletes can get plenty of iron from foods like spinach, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals. Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C (like a squeeze of lemon on your spinach) enhances absorption. Iron deficiency is no more common in well-planned vegan diets than in meat-based diets (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-safety-of-heme-vs-non-heme-iron/ ) . "You Can't Recover Properly Without Animal Protein" Myth: Some argue that animal protein is superior for muscle recovery and that vegans can't recover as efficiently. Reality: Plant-based protein sources like tofu, tempeh, legumes, and quinoa provide ample recovery benefits, especially when combined with whole grains. Many plant-based foods also come packed with antioxidants that reduce inflammation and promote faster recovery (worldathletics.org https://nutritionfacts.org/video/foods-to-improve-athletic-performance-and-recovery/ ) .
In 1989, IMG agent Hughes Norton showed up at Earl Woods' front door. Tiger was 12—but Norton could see the future. He would go on to become Tiger's first agent, inking the future legend to record-setting deals with Nike and Titleist before he hit one ball as a pro. But, as you'll hear in Norton's new sit-down with host Tom Coyne, all that fame and fortune came at a heavy price. In this interview, Norton pulls back the curtain to reveal the soaring highs and stomach-churning lows from his 35+ years as one of golf's premier agents. Fleshing out tales from his new memoir, Rainmaker, Norton offers blow-by-blow accounts of previously unseen Tiger moments, sheds new light on Greg Norman's decades-long grudges, offers an inside look at the birth of IMG and reflects on how history may just judge Arnold Palmer as the game's true moral compass. Third declension is Latin's “catch-all” category for nouns. Into it have been put all nouns whose bases end with consonants -- yep, any consonant! That makes third declension very different from first and second declension. First declension, as you'll remember, is dominated by a-stem nouns like femina and cura. Second declension is dominated by o- or u-stem nouns like amicus or oculus. Because of those vowels, we are given a bit of consistency within those declensions… The same is not true of third declension where one form, the nominative singular, is affected by the fact that its ending -s runs into the wide variety of consonants found at the ends of the bases of third-declension nouns, and the collision of those consonants causes irregular forms to appear in the nominative singular. That's the (malus) bad news. The (bonus) good news is that only one case and number is affected by this, the nominative singular. All the other case endings begin with vowels, and consonants-running-into-vowels does not create the same kind of problem that consonants-running-into-consonants does. Thus, after the nominative singular, third-declension forms are regular and predictable.(Yay!) Let's look at some patterns that are useful in helping you memorize irregular third declension nominative singular forms. If a base ends in -g- or -c-, when it's combined with a nominative singular ending -s, normally the nominative singular ending will appear as -x, such as rex, regis, meaning “king” or lex, legis, meaning “law,” pax, pacis, meaning “peace,” vox, vocis, meaning “voice,” dux, ducis, meaning “leader,” and lux, lucis, meaning “light.” If the base ends in -t-, -nt-, or -d- and runs into the -s, most often what will happen is the nominative singular will end in -s, sometimes -ns, such as virtus, virtutis, meaning “courage,” civitas, civitatis, meaning “state,” salus, salutis, meaning “health,” and laus, laudis, meaning “praise.” If the base ends in -on- or -in- and runs into the -s, it will contract down all the way to the letter -o such as: homo, hominis, meaning “human,” virgo, virginis, meaning “girl,” or the name Cicero, Ciceronis, meaning “Cicero,” the great Roman orator. If the base ends in -r-, when -s is added, the nominative singular will be -er, as in pater, patris, meaning “father,” mater, matris, meaning “mother,” and frater, fratris, meaning “brother.” 4 If the base ends in -ar- with -s added, it will remain as -ar, as in Caesar, Caesaris, meaning “Caesar” the Roman general, or exemplar, exemplaris, meaning “example.” If the base ends -or and is a masculine or feminine noun, with -s added it stays as -or, as in labor, laboris, meaning “work,” amor, amoris, meaning “love,” and soror, sororis, meaning "sister.” • If the word is -or or -er and is neuter, with -s added it will change to -us ─ remember there's no ending being added here so it's actually a different contraction from amor or labor ─ such as tempus, temporis, meaning “time,” corpus, corporis, meaning “body,” opus, operis, meaning “work,” and genus, generis, meaning “sort” or “kind.” If the base ends in -it- and -s- is added, the result will be either -es or -ut, as in miles, militis, meaning “soldier,” or caput, capitis, meaning “head.” If the base ends -ul or -ol and -s is added, the result is either -ul or -ol in the nominative singular, such as sol, solis, meaning “sun,” or consul, consulis, meaning “consul,” a high executive officer in Roman government. This should drive home the point that third declension is a “catch-all” category and, if all these irregularities make third declension seem overly complicated, remember that these irregularities involve only the nominative singular. If these patterns do not help you in memorizing, please feel free to ignore them. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/liam-connerly/support

LAURA When my son asks if I'll rent the spare bedroom to his new friend from work, I figure, why not? The house is too quiet since my twenty-five-year-old baby moved out. I never thought I'd miss the sounds of video games, but apparently, I do. But that's not the background noise I get when Hudson moves in. Turns out, my son's coworker isn't a like-minded gaming geek. Hudson doesn't play video games. He works out. A lot. Now my house is filled with the masculine grunting of a very fit, very handsome, younger man who owns shirts, but isn't inclined to wear them. Ditto for pants. Everywhere I turn in my tiny house, Hudson is there. Flexing. Smoldering. I can't resist looking at him. Or using him for inspiration while I write my current romance novel. Fantasizing about him when I'm lying in my bed. He's my tenant. My son's coworker. A man fifteen years younger than me. Hudson is fodder for my mind, but that's all he can be… until the night he puts every fantasy I've had to shame. HUDSON House hunting is a slow process, and hotel living sucks, so I jump at the opportunity to temporarily rent a room from my coworker's mother. I'm told the place is clean, and the woman is easy to get along with. Perfect. What the guy across the office doesn't tell me? That his mom is ten-out-of-ten hot. Single. And sexual, if the sounds seeping through the paper-thin wall separating our bedrooms are any indication. I'm not a pushy guy, but a man has his limits. Being perpetually hard around her, hearing her moan every night—it's more than I can take. So I make a move. A big one. And it pays off, in the best ways possible. Our chemistry is red hot. We connect outside the bedroom, too. I'm only supposed to be here temporarily, but every minute I spend with Laura makes me determined never to leave. HOW DOES HE LIVE WHEN HE KNOWS HIS DAYS ARE NUMBERED?Story/Illustration: Israel and the “Land bridge.” SEE MAPS AND GOOGLE EARTHBottom line: Jesus lived his last days well by remembering who he was and what he came to do.OutlineQ. What do I want you to know? A. (21:1-11): King Jesus came to Jerusalem as a one-of-a-kind king to show us that his unique way is the way to true life: The way of genuine, growing faith in his words, ways and works.A. (21:12-17): King Jesus hates hypocrisy, prayerlessness and a lack of compassionate hospitality.Q. Why do I want you to know?A. (21:1-11): To show you that he's worth following and surrendering our whole life to him.A. (21:12-17): Because they are enemies of true fellowship with God for us and others.Q. What do I want you to do? A. (21:1-11): Follow King Jesus. A. (21:12-17): Stop fearing what other people think.Stop doubting God wants to answer your prayers.Stop shutting your doors to compassionate hospitality.Stop pursuing the kingdom without the King. (the blessings w/o the Bless-or)Q. Why do I want you to do this?A. (21:1-11): Because he's the best king ever and he'll satisfy every hunger, thirst and need you'll ever have including your need for forgiveness from your Creator.A. (21:12-17): So that you'll find fruitful living and freedom in Christ…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control…and forgiveness from your Creator. For us and others.21:18-22: Jesus shows us the same thing through a withered fig tree.He hates hypocrisy. He is not pleased with unbelief. (Cf. Hebrews 11:6)ConclusionCompassionate HospitalityA missionary to Africa told someone, “When we want to share the gospel in a village in Africa, we don't send them books. We send them a Christian family.”Why is it better to send the family than some books? It's certainly cheaper. Seems more efficient. But this experienced missionary understood that the Christian life lived like Jesus would demonstrate the love of God through serving others sacrificially—through compassionate hospitality. Therefore, the gospel wouldn't just be taught but caught. It's not about putting God or our church experience into a compartment and then living the rest of our lives without a care for what Jesus did for us. (Hypocrisy; lack of faith) We live out a genuine relationship with our trustworthy creator-redeemer as we practice compassionate hospitality to those who are far from God but close to us (where we live, work and play)Bottom line: Jesus lived his last days well by remembering who he was and what he came to do.Application:So, how DO we follow a king like Jesus Christ? WeSee Christ as the unique King that he is and worship him.Pursue Christ's kingdom AND Christ himself as King.To live for something that's worth dying forTo love people who are living for something that's worth dying for as seen in their sacrificeExpose hypocrisy. Hypocrisy blows up hospitality.Make his house (in us) a house of prayer and compassionate hospitality. So how do we live when our days are numbered?Remember who you are. Sons of God the Father and brothers of King Jesus.Remember how your heavenly father taught you to live. To please God (Heb 11:6) and to “Live for the applause of nail-scarred hands” —Mark BattersonRemember who matters most to your heavenly father. Fleshing out compassionate hospitality to the least, the last and the lost of our world as you make disciples of all nations.Remember to expose hypocrisy. The accounts of the early Christian martyrs tell the stories of many followers of Jesus who demonstrated this courageous faith even unto death. One such martyr was Perpetua.Perpetua was twenty-two years old. She was married and the mother of an infant boy whom she nursed from her jail cell. She was in prison for being a Christian. All she had to do was recant her belief in Jesus, offer a simple sacrifice to Caesar, and call him, "Lord." Her father begged her to do this, but she refused time and again. Finally, as she was led out into the Roman Colosseum to be killed by beast or gladiator, she was singing hymns to Jesus. Can you imagine that kind of courage? Twenty-two years old! Her last words, spoken to her brother, also a Christian, were, "Stand in the faith."Last words.Last days. How will you finish?God has given us instructions on how to live out our days. Our last days. How to live out all our days as if they were our last days…because they are.Let's prayNOTESNo other notes this week.MAIN REFERENCES USED“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“Matthew” by RC Sproul“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“The Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)Outline Bible, D WillmingtonNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study Bible (ESVSB)

On today's ID the Future, author and engineer Steve Laufmann delves into the theory of biological design he develops in Your Designed Body, his new book co-authored with physician Howard Glicksman. Laufmann explains how his engineering background has helped him further develop design theory and, with help from Glicksman, apply it to the human body. In exploring the causal capacities of intelligent design, Laufmann spotlights four elements: (1) intentional actions, which in turn require mind, agency, and foresight; (2) adaptive capabilities, which involve, among other things, control systems that employ sensors, logic, and effectors; (3) design properties (e.g., modularity); and (4) degradation prevention. The last of these features is implemented by engineers to get a system to last longer. In Read More › Source

In this episode, we discuss patent law with Bennett C. David, an intellectual property attorney. He is simplifying the patent application process and facilitating patent litigations. Patent law has become increasingly compacted since most modern innovations are merely improvements on previous inventions, which is why it is critical to prove and defend your novel concepts. Anyone can file a patent, regardless if they created it or not, so today Bennett details everything you need to know to protect your ideas from corporations who would appropriate your designs. Owning your patent not only ensures ownership but also increases the valuation of your company allowing you to compete in the arena of big business. Key Takeaways:[4:30] Discerning if your innovation warrants a patent [5:38] What type of patent is suitable to the design or service you've created[6:50] Broadening your protection by building an IP portfolio[8:40] Proving commercial recognizance and creating income through licensing [9:45] Fleshing out your application with proof of your novel concepts and expertise [12:32] Mitigating risk when facing an infringement case [14:44] Filing a provisional application while you make your product commercially viable[17:50] Expedite the patent process with a nominal fee[19:00] Owning your IP is an asset that increases the value of your companyTo learn more about Bennett and patents visit his website at https://davidiplaw.com/ Pre-Order Legalpreneur the book here to receive: Master class with Andrea, Legal Protection Playbook, and a Master Class Series with Experts. https://www.thewrap.com/bob-iger-sell-disney-apple-power-move/ From The Wrap: ”This is the pinnacle deal for the ultimate dealmaker,“ one studio insider says Now that Disney CEO Bob Iger has regained the keys to the Magic Kingdom — less than three years after his chosen successor, Bob Chapek, took over — insiders suspect they know how the beloved executive will find a new way to go out on top during his final two-year stint. “He's going to sell the company,” one Disney insider who has worked for Iger predicted. “This is the pinnacle deal for the ultimate dealmaker.” Landing a deal with Apple (or some other megabuyer) would also cement Iger's legacy. “I think he'd welcome it — he'd be the last CEO of Disney,” a former top Disney executive told TheWrap, noting that the two companies have “similar brand identities” and could benefit from a merger. Acquisitions are in Iger's DNA. Under Iger's leadership, Disney went on a nearly $100 billion shopping spree to buy animation giant Pixar in 2006, superhero juggernaut Marvel in 2009, “Star Wars”-powered Lucasfilm in 2012 and Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox in 2019. But there was one acquisition he's publicly lamented as a transformational deal that got away — a combination with the tech powerhouse Apple In Iger's 2019 autobiography “The Ride of a Lifetime,” the executive wrote chapters about his friendship with Steve Jobs. He and his wife, Willow Bay, were close friends with Steve and Laurene Powell Jobs, even spending holidays together and vacationing in Hawaii. He even writes about standing in front of Steve Jobs' grave when the tech visionary's wife uttered: “I asked him if we could trust you. And Steve said, ‘I love that guy.' ” Iger responds: “The feeling was mutual.” Yes, there are caveats — chief among them that Jobs died in 2011. And Disney is a big pill to swallow, with a $180 billion market valuation that would easily soar to a $200 billion premium if the studio were to be acquired. A deal of that size is likely to draw stiff antitrust resistance at a moment when regulators have stepped up efforts to block other recently proposed media megadeals. Paramount Global this week scrapped the $2 billion sale of its Simon & Schuster division to book publishing giant Penguin Random House after a federal judge blocked the deal, while European regulators have launched a probe of Microsoft's $69 million offer to purchase gaming giant Activision Blizzard. Apple CEO Tim Cook, known to be a safe player with relatively few acquisitions under his leadership, might have given Wall Street a big hint in April. During a call with investors, Cook said he would not rule out acquiring a large company, and that the main drive was to secure strong intellectual property and big names. Hello, Disney? “We are always looking at companies to buy, we acquire a lot of smaller companies and we'll continue to do that for IP and to incorporate talent,” Cook said. “We don't discount something larger if the opportunity presents itself. I'm not going to go through my list with you on this call, but we're always looking.” Apple, which has been tinkering with a grab in the streaming space with hits like “Ted Lasso,” certainly has the financial firepower to pull off an acquisition of this size. Even as borrowing costs get more expensive with rising interest rates, the Cupertino-based company is sitting on top of a $48.3 billion cash stockpile. Fleshing that out to both cash and investments, the total surges to about $200 billion. That's 7.4% of all the mad money held by every member of the broad Standard & Poor's 500 index. Not to mention that Apple shares have skyrocketed since Iger and Jobs first did business together. Disney bought the Jobs-run Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion, which put the animation studio's CEO on the entertainment company's 10-member board. On the day the deal was announced, Apple was trading at about $3 a share and Disney at $25. Apple is now trading at $150, up 238% in the pa --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bwrosas/support
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: "Cars and Elephants": a handwavy argument/analogy against mechanistic interpretability, published by David Scott Krueger on October 31, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. TL;DR: If we can build competitive AI systems that are interpretable, then I argue via analogy that trying to extract them from messy deep learning systems seems less promising than directly engineering them. Preliminaries: Distinguish weak and strong tractability of (mechanistic) interpretability as follows: Weak tractability: AGI-level systems are interpretable in principle, i.e. humans have the capacity to fully understand their workings in practice given the right instructions and tools. This would be false if intelligence involves irreducible complexity, e.g. because it involves concepts that are not "crisp", modular, or decomposable; for instance, there might not a crisp conceptual core to various aspects of perception or abstract concepts such as "fairness". Strong tractability: We can build interpretable AGI-level systems without sacrificing too much competitiveness. The claim:If strong tractability is true, then mechanistic interpretability is likely not the best way to engineer competitive AGI-level systems. The analogy:1) Suppose we have a broken down car with some bad parts and we want to have a car that is safe to drive. We could try to fix the car and update the parts. 2) But we also have a perfectly functioning elephant. So instead, we could try and tinker with the elephant to understand how it works and make its behavior more safe and predictable.I claim (2) is roughly analogous to mechanistic interpretability, and (1) to pursuing something more like what Stuart Russell seems to be aiming for: a neurosymbolic approach to AI safety based on modularity, probabilistic programming, and formal methods.Fleshing out the argument a bit more:To the extent that strong tractability is true, there must be simple principles we can recognize underlying intelligent behavior. If there are not such simple principles, then we shouldn't expect mechanistic interpretability methods to yield safe, competitive systems. We already have many ideas about what some of those principles might be (from GOFAI and other areas). Why would we expect it is easier to recognize and extract these principles from neural networks than to deliberately incorporate them into the way we engineer systems? Epistemic status: I seem to be the biggest interpretability hater/skeptic I've encountered in the AI x-safety community. This is an argument I came up with a few days ago that seems to capture some of my intuitions, although it is hand-wavy. I haven't thought about it much, and spent ~1hr writing this, but am publishing it anyways because I don't express my opinions publicly as often as I'd like due to limited bandwidth.Caveats: I made no effort to anticipate and respond to counter-arguments (e.g. "those methods aren't actually more interpretable"). There are lots of different ways that interpretability might be useful for AI x-safety. It makes sense as part of a portfolio approach. It makes sense as an extra "danger detector" that might produce some true positives (even if there are a lot of false negatives) or one of many hacks that might be stacked. I'm not arguing that Stuart Russell's approach is clearly superior to mechanistic interpretability. But it seems like roughly the entire AI existential safety community is very excited about mechanistic interpretability and entirely dismissive of Stuart Russell's approach, and this seems bizarre.Unrelated bonus reason to be skeptical of interpretability (hopefully many more to come!): when you to deploy a reasonably advanced system in the real world, it will likely recruit resources outside itself in various ways (e.g. The way people write things down on paper as a way of augmenting...

Now it's time to get into the real analysis of fintech as laid out by Saule Omarova's work. We walk through the dominant regulatory approach to financial markets that came from the New Deal; how the 1980s is the true origin of the fintech revolution; how the secondary financial markets have taken over the whole system; how new technologies focused on making micro-level transactions faster, easier, cheaper have led to making macro-level systems more unstable, unrestrained, and untethered from reality. This is an awesome episode! "Facio" is such a present root word within our English language... In fact, there are more than 260 words in the dictionary devoted to words that derive themselves from "facio." "Plico" is also fascinating as although the meaning is rather vague, the cognates and derivatives that accompany said root word are exponential and vast! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/liam-connerly/support
Sometimes editors and writers use these phrases that make sense and yet don't make sense. Maybe you understand the concept of fleshing out a chracter, but how exactly do you do it? List their favorite snacks or their favorite movies? Describe in detail how they look? The story is in how the chracter reacts to things going on around him/her, therefore fleshing out your character is more than just knowing what books they like. Let's talk more about that today. Beatrice Adler-Bolton (@realLandsEnd) of the Death Panel podcast joins cohosts Will Beaman (@agoingaccount), Natalie Smith (@orangeasm) & Maxximilian Seijo (@MaxSeijo) to discuss a recent article about pandemic politics published by Adler-Bolton and her cohost Artie Vierkant in The New Inquiry. Titled "The Beyblade Strategy" or: How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Focused Protection," the essay uncovers eugenic ideas and assumptions embedded in mainstream liberal responses to COVID-19. Fleshing out Adler-Bolton and Vierkant's claims, this episode advances a non eugenic media practice that stakes a claim for the social rights of the medically vulnerable in the name of fully inclusive public provisioning.
