In today’s show, another of my old coaching buddies is back to chat about what’s been happening in his coaching world during the last 6 months. David Tilbury Davis is a triathlon coach who works with athletes who have a ”performance mindset”.  Among the athletes he currently works with are Lionel Sanders, Kim Morrison, and Rasmus Svenningsson and we chat about each of them today. I’ve known David for over 20 years during which time his journey has seen him progress from novice to one of the world’s prominent long-distance triathlon coaches via Spain, Texas, Seattle, and now Finland. I love watching my friends develop on their own journeys and David is no different.  It’s a real pleasure to welcome him back onto the show to share some of the knowledge and experience he’s gained in the last two decades.  I just wish that this catch-up could have been over a beer or two at some race venue but that’ll have to wait for another time. For now, listen in as we chat about: The Lionel Sanders 1-hour Canadian record attempt Differences between riding a track bike and a TT bike (TIP: there are way more than you think) Training like a triathlete while aiming to break a cycling record Combining a cycling record attempt with setting a 5k running PB Rasmus Svenningsson solo sub-8 hour Ironman Giving athletes free rein to try something different David’s thoughts on the upcoming PTO Challenge Daytona Pro race Why polarised training for triathletes is not quite as simple as 80/20 To follow David on social media or find out a bit more about him or his athletes please use the following links Website - Tilburydavis.com Instagram - coachtilburs Twitter - @tilburydavis We covered a lot of ground in this conversation so here are the links to some of what we discussed: Books Dark Horse - Achieving success through the pursuit of fulfillment - Todd Rose Peak Performance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, and Thrive with the New Science of Success- Steve Magness Conscious Coaching The Art and Science of Building Buy in - Brett Bartholomew Will It make the Boat Go faster - Ben Hunt-Davis   Lionel Sanders 1-hr record on YouTube Some of Lionel’s training sessions for the 1-hour record Session 1 Session 2 Lionel’s 5k PB attempts Session 5 & 6 And there’s more on this page HERE David mentioned the performance profiling document he uses with new athletes.  It’s based on this research paper: Pelletier, L. G., Fortier, M. S., & Vallerand, R. J. (1995). Toward a new measure of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and motivation in sports: The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS). This week’s podcast has several guests, all top-level coaches working with reasonably large groups of athletes.  First up we have Helsinki-based UK Coach David Tilbury-Davis,  who works with high-level pro and age group long-distance athletes. Next, we have the Smiling Tri Coach coach, Kate Offord, working with a large age group community. In third, we have Mike Ricci, all the way from Boulder, Colorado. Mike runs D3Multisport and has 9 coaches looking after almost 200 athletes. Finally, we have another UK coach, Matt Dixon, based in San Francisco, CA. Matt is the owner of Purple Patch Fitness and has a large group of coaches and athletes to manage. Each of these coaches was gracious enough to share their time and provide insight into how they are currently working to manage their athletes and coaches, as well as their own health and well being. Despite having different bases and athlete numbers, you’ll find that they have all adopted a similar approach during the Coronavirus pandemic. To me, this is unsurprising as they are all high-level coaches and you don’t get to this level without having a certain type of outlook and philosophy.  Each of the conversations follows a similar format as we discuss: How each coach has adapted training for pro and age group athletes Managing expectations How and how often coaches interact with clients and other coaches Who supports the coaches during this stressful time At the end of each chat, our coaches offer tips for athletes and coaches Mark Wahlberg & James Corden morning workout David Tilbury-Davis Kate Offord  - The Smiling Tri Coach Mike Ricci - D3Multisport Matt Dixon - Purple Patch Fitness The Purple Patch Fitness podcast To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE  To comment on this podcast, please visit Simon's Facebook page HERE  Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes  For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com

Today we have Coach David Tilbury Davis on the show to help us on Episode number 4 of the Road to Roth Training series! So for the first time listeners, a bit of a backstory here with the Road to Roth Series – at the beginning of August I announced that I’ll be doing my first full distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in 2020, and since then, I found that a lot of listeners were actually on a similar path; whether it was with Roth or another race; but they too were on their crazy journey to their first full distance triathlon and looking forward to hearing content specific to the full distance! Of course, never having actually done the distance before, I figured everyone could benefit the most in a series where I interview top professional triathletes and coaches that will be able to provide a ton of training tips specific to the full distance as well as give us the motivation and insight we need to help us maximize our performances come race day! Now to introduce David, he has been coaching both professional and age group triathletes since 1995 and has helped his athletes achieve 3 world titles, 11 national titles, multiple regional championship titles and has helped numerous age group triathletes get their qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 & 140.6 world Championships. David is also the Coach of Cody Beals who recently just smashed the IMMT course record which was set last year by Cody himself in his IRONMAN Debut. but this year not only did he crush it but he also set the first ever Sub 8 hour performance at IMMT. Cody will also be doing his KONA debut this October, so him and David have been hard at work fine tuning and getting ready for this race which you’ll hear about in this podcast! In today’s episode, David also talks to us about the pros and cons of age groupers self-coaching versus getting a coach, how to find a coach that best suits your goals and style, and goes over some great training tips and advice, so I hope you guys enjoy this podcast and be sure to take advantage of your long bike sessions by lining up a few episodes to play for constant workout motivation!
