1985: A Novel by Dominic Hoey. Set in Auckland in the mid 80's as the title suggests, this is the story of a young man coming of age in a dysfunctional family in Grey Lynn before it became gentrified, when the area and many of the people who lived in it were rough, not necessarily law abiding and where there seemed sometimes to be no future. Obi and his best friend Al discover a map which they believe leads to treasure, and which they hope will turn their fortunes around. The book is extremely atmospheric of the era, and took me right back. Terrific local fiction. High Heels and Gumboots by Rebecca Hayter. Rebecca is a sailor and a journalist, often combining the two things, who turned her back on Auckland and bought a property in Golden Bay, where she had grown up many years earlier. It's a story about leaving the city and discovering independence and self sufficiency, a strong community to call her own, and finding ways to come to terms with the fractious relationship she had had with her mother, who was something of a legend in the area. People talk – and like-minded Kiwis who love to work hard, play hard started asking questions about how they could get their hands on the infamous caffeine kick. Welcome to Deadly Sin Coffee Co – New Zealand's strongest, smoothest coffee.  Wake up on the wrong side of the bed most mornings? We've got you covered. This week's guest is a real go-getter - the determined, inspiring and hilarious Kath Sheeran. Kath was a finance broker in her 20s and 30s, before reinventing herself in her 40s and becoming Australia's shopping guru. Kath ran a popular blog and online directory, Shopping Confessions, which led to her becoming a regular on our TV screens and in the media, including a column in the Sunday Telegraph. But one reinvention wasn't enough for Kath. At 50 she decided to make a big tree change and buy a farm with her husband Mike. Kath is now a happy flower farmer who owns a shop in Burringbar, and she's also a close girlfriend of Di and Nicola.  In this episode, we hear about Kath's incredible career journey from finance broker, to shopping guru, to flower farmer and why Kath thinks it's essential to always follow your heart and have passion for what you do. She talks about what it was like growing up as the daughter of Greek immigrants and how that contributed to her work ethic and go-getter attitude. Kath shares the funny story of what happened the first time she was asked to appear on live television for The Morning Show, which was such a success that it became a regular shopping segment on the show.  We hear why Kath and her husband Mike decided they needed a change and made the big call to buy a farm in Burringbar, despite having always been city folk. We get an insight into how much life has changed for Kath over the past few years and the steps along the way in her journey to becoming a fake farmer (as she lovingly refers to herself). Kath also opens up about her beautiful relationship with her husband Mike and what she thinks is the key to their happy marriage.  We absolutely loved having Kath in the studio. Her enthusiasm is infectious, she is full of funny stories and we hope you enjoy laughing along with us.  Follow Kath on IG here  Check out Kath's shop here  Kath's Home and Garden: 27 Broadway, Burringbar Follow Nicola and Di on Instagram hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Quality without compromise. It's an underlying theme of this personal finance podcast. Another way to say this is, making the most of what you have. We shouldn't have to sacrifice time or money to have the life we want, but what if we looked at this differently. What if we were unnecessarily spending money? This episode starts with 3 amazing things I have achieved this week: 1. My Best Saving - $5 Gumboots from Kmart (you won't believe how I discovered them) 2. My Best Learning - Done is better than perfect. Yes this is a popular saying, but seriously so true, overcoming this is a game changer. 3. Money Bravery - I share how I have tackled a bad habit of non-confrontation and ended up being better financially for it. PLUS: In this episode I share how the process I went through that changed what I thought about spending money on fashion and in the process saved $4,362!! It's time to wear your gumboots to work!Gumboot Friday is an initiative led by mental health campaigner Mike King, to raise $2 million to help kids get access to the counselling they need. Mike King told Tim Dower the idea's simple. "For people with depression, it's like walking through mud 365 days a year. So for one day, let's all put on our gumboots and walk through mud with them, and signal to people that we do care and we want to do something about it."He said it's about "Kiwi fun" as well as helping to raise money and awareness."How much more Kiwi can you get than putting on your suit and tie and going to work in gumboots?"King said the money will be used to make it easier for kids to access free counselling."The biggest crisis facing our young people at the moment and their parents, is getting them into face to face counselling."He said free care is available but only if you have been diagnosed with a mental health problem by a doctor."This way, you just go along to the counsellor and make the booking yourself and we pay for it."The "staunch" attitude we are teaching our kids has to stop, King said."Our hard and staunch attitude that we have been teaching them is killing them.""Last year 137 young people took their own lives because they didn't feel like they could open up and talk about their issues and something has to be done about that.""We all have problems and we all get up every morning and put on our happy masks and we walk off to work pretending that everything is right with the world and it's a bad example that we are setting for our kids."He said everyone has problems and we need to normalise talking about them.Gumboot Friday events• 9am to noon: Gumboot Friday Dog Walk, Yatton Park, Merivale• Noon to 9pm: Gumboot Golf, Masonic Park, The Strand • Anytime: Donate via the I AM HOPE Givealittle page, in Kiwibank or PostShop branches, at participating stores or direct to account 38 9020 0336055 01.Where to get help:If you are worried about your or someone else's mental health, the best place to get help is your GP or local mental health provider. Dance & Politics: Moving Beyond Boundaries (Manchester University Press, 2017) by Dana Mills, considers dance as a political expression from a number of perspectives, situating the analysis within a framework of contemporary political theory. Mills notes that dance has always been with us, as humans, but that we do not usually think about it as part of our political discourse in the same way that other performative or artistic expressions are integrated into political discussions and political life. Mills’ book argues that dance, as a language or means of communication, should be considered from the dancers’ perspective but also from the audience or the receivers’ experience and understanding, as well as the choreographers’ point of view, and the interactions of the other dancers involved. Mills digs into the overarching question of how can we expand our notion of what is political so that dance is included, trying to also understand why it has often been excluded from the notion of the political. The book elaborates on how and why dance is political, how dance can give voice to subversive discourse, how it can articulate feminist perspectives, and how it can provide opportunity and outlet for those marginalized within society and politics. The scope of the book is global–integrating not only the groundbreaking work of Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham as the building blocks for thinking about dance and politics–but exploring the Gumboots dance and development in South Africa; the One Billion Rising concept and diffusion to western countries, and non-western appropriation of the movement; and the integration of dance into human rights advocacy in Israel and in Palestine. The book concludes with another example of the role of dance within yet another community, the Native American communities in North America. Throughout the book, Mills teases apart the issues of the body as a political entity, while also exploring the conceptual notion of political space where dance is performed, and how the body is part of an understanding of political space. These questions are vital to consider in context of contemporary political theory and what we understand to be political discourse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
