In this episode, Word&Way President Brian Kaylor talks with Martha Bardwell, pastor of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on how faith communities are responding to ICE violence in the Twin Cities and the ICE killing of Renee Good. In this fun, laugh-filled and genuinely eye-opening episode, Michelle Ford sits down with women's health nutritionist Emma Bardwell to tackle one of the most underrated pillars of midlife wellbeing: fibre - the true unsung hero of women's health. Between giggles over “poophoria” (yes, it's a thing!) and some serious myth-busting, Michelle and Emma unpack why getting enough fibre and protein is essential - especially if you're using GLP-1 weight-loss injections like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro. As Emma explains, these medications slow digestion, making fibre even more important for gut motility, nutrient absorption and long-term health.Forget fibre's dusty, boring reputation - this episode gives it a full glow-up. Through perimenopause and menopause, when hormones fluctuate and the gut becomes increasingly linked to mood, energy and resilience, fibre becomes a midlife powerhouse. Michelle and Emma explore how nourishing your gut supports immunity, mental wellbeing, metabolism and overall vitality, and why our midlife microbiome deserves centre stage. With Emma's straight-talking, practical approach, you'll learn simple, everyday ways to boost your fibre intake - no chia-seed obsession required.By the end, you'll never look at your plate (or your bowel movements!) the same way again.

On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, puts his overalls on for a chat with Lance Irving from the Sand County Foundation about some of the great things private land managers are doing in Kentucky! Three finalists have been selected for the 2023 Kentucky Leopold Conservation Award®. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the prestigious award recognizes farmers, ranchers, and forestland owners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working lands. In Kentucky, the $10,000 award is presented annually by Sand County Foundation, American Farmland Trust, Kentucky Agricultural Council, and the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts. This year's recipient will be recognized at the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts' Annual Convention on July 11 in Bowling Green. This year's finalists are: • Steve and Melanie Kelley of Bardwell in Carlisle County: The Kelleys utilize no-till practices and plant cover crops to conserve soil and moisture. Their farm features 48 acres of filter strips, and 17 acres of grassed waterways and rock chutes to slow water runoff. Solar panels produce electricity and provide the farm with another source of income. Wildlife and pollinator-friendly habitat has been established on 800 acres. • Donald Veatch of Campbellsville in Marion County: At Donald Veatch's beef cattle and grain farm, establishing buffer strips, and crop rotations, no-till practices and cover crops have reduced soil erosion and improved water quality. Selective harvesting and thinning overgrowth promote the quality of timber in the farm's 125 acres of forests. Planting trees and native grasses has created habitat for wildlife and insect pollinators. • Michael W. Wilson of Lawrenceburg in Anderson County: Michael Wilson's Whispering Hills Farm implements conservation practices to reduce soil erosion caused by beef cattle production. Rotational grazing his cattle prevents overgrazing, recycles nutrients, and increases plant regrowth and biodiversity. By equipping soil with greater organic matter, he's making it more resilient to drought and extreme rainfall events. Last year's award recipient was Reddick Farms of Bardwell in Carlisle County. There's now no doubt that good bacteria that reside in our digestive tract are inextricably linked to wellbeing and good health. But what influence does the gut have on perimenopause symptoms? This week I'm joined by registered nutritionist and health writer Emma Bardwell to find out. Emma specialises in women's health and has a particular interest in menopause and perimenopause and is a member of the British Menopause Society. Her evidence-based, no nonsense approach has made her one of the go-to names in women's health. In this episode we also talk about the sensitive subject of fat loss at perimenopause, something I've felt nervous talking about because for me, body positivity comes first. However, fat loss is a subject both Emma and I get asked about all the time so it needs to be discussed! As well as her one-to-one clinic in London, Emma also runs Menopause In The Workplace sessions. She has also co-authored the book The Perimenopause Solution which brings together her own specialist expertise alongside that of medical doctor Dr Shahzadi Harper. “The essence of family literacy is that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children.” Family Literacy is the idea that long after diapers and baby steps, our children have so much to learn by watching, observing, and collaborating with trusted adults at home, particularly when it comes to building a strong foundation for reading with confidence. On this episode, we dive deeper into this idea and share the how and why of building and sustain robust family literacy practices. Joining us on this journey are Lauren Bardwell, Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning Solutions at NWEA, and Shiji Mathew, Senior ELA Content Specialist at NWEA.

My guest today is Cynthia Bardwell, a dear friend I met over 30 years ago. Cynthia had a successful career as a buyer in the fashion industry and, after her 3 sons were all school age, switched careers and became an elementary school teacher and later a principal. And although we drifted apart for 20 years, I am delighted to have her back in my life. Cynthia has invited me into her current journey of accepting and facing the insidious spread of cancer throughout her body. Cynthia sees she has a choice everyday on how to view her circumstances. Her honesty, vulnerability, gratitude, laughter, and humility are refreshing. It is a joy to be in Cynthia's presence; I am moved and deeply appreciative for all that Cynthia is teaching me about living with intention and integrity, while gracing the dying process with gratitude and dignity.
