Today's fabulous guest, Heather Kinal, is going to fuel our PLAN-UARY mojo!Heather is the organizer of the Rooted Women's Mountain Bike Festival that will be happening in July; she's one half of the super-terrestrial force behind Ride Cosmic Dirt, a new women's mountain biking clothing brand that's launching its Kickstarter any day now; she's the founder of the Instagram community Sisters in Singletrack; and not surprisingly, she's also an all around lovely person who loves connecting women to each other, and to new experiences.Heather and I caught up right before she left her home base in the Buffalo New York area for a cross country traverse to meet up with Ride Cosmic Dirt's co-badass, Ashley Duffus-Jambor. Even before her trip commenced, Heather and I covered a lot of ground - we talk about getting started in mountain biking, building confidence, yelling at the internet, launching an apparel company during a pandemic, and why we need Rooted in our lives.Along with the Ride Cosmic Dirt universe, you should obviously follow Heather in all her other places, she's @heluvaheather, @sistersinsingletrack, and @rootedMTBfest on Instagram. How many times have you put on a piece of athletic or outdoor gear and been totally annoyed at the fit, colors, lack of quality, etc? Probably a bunch, but if you're like me, you yank the waistband up to your boobs and just go on your merry way complaining.... or if you're REALLY like me, you take off the offending garment, grab a snack or a beer (or both), and flop on the couch/bail on whatever the activity was that you were going to be uncomfortable or look like a doofus doing.Thankfully, Kelley Cullenberg and Sarah Doscinski aren't like me. At all. A decade ago, when the track teams Kelley and Sarah were coaching asked for some sassy team tights to run in, they found some options, but each one was worst than the last - the fit would be off, or they would fall apart immediately, or the full-length tights would be like capris on their runners.Instead of just going back to buying the blah black or navy ones that were the norm, these two enterprising women decided to make their own. Never mind that they had basically zero experience designing or stitching garments. And basically zero spare time. That scrappy side hustle is now Spandits, a fun and functional Maine brand that has achieved a national footprint through its devoted brand ambassador evangelists and its internet and social media presence. You can find Spandits online at Spandits.com, as well as at selected retailers. Bravery. Courage. Strength. Vulnerability. Our guest today is Angela Pohl, one of our own Running for Real community members. She shares with us the story of her breast cancer diagnostic and treatment journey as she gets ready for a double mastectomy surgery on June 11. There's so much we can all learn from Angela, starting with her admirable mindset. From her, we learn how we can use our runner's attitude of courage and determination as tools to aid us in some of life's hardest challenges. “I had been chronicling my whole running journey for a couple of years now, and just all of the learnings that I've had through that, the mental training and all the progress that I made through that I decided that I was going to be very open about sharing my breast cancer journey as well because it's a chapter of my running journey or my overall journey.” –Angela Pohl During 2020, Angela ran 55 half marathons, 13 full marathons, and was training for a 100-mile ultra when she got diagnosed with breast cancer. In this episode, she helps us cover… Importance of self-checks and mammograms- even if you believe yourself to be a healthy runner or athlete. Don't put things off. First it was COVID hesitation to not go to the doctor's office, then it was a marathon training cycle putting off doctor's visits until she finally went. There's always something going on, but checkups are important. Don't put them off. “Not everybody who goes through a cancer journey wants to be seen as a fighter or battling or warrior. Some people are on a healing journey. They feel that the cancer is part of their body, so they don't want to fight their own body. They might not want to use that kind of metaphor just because has some kind of violence, you know, associated with it. For me it's kind of a journey. I'm a race addict. And so I thought it would be kind of fun if you can call this fun at all to, you know, pretend that this is a whole race that I'm going through, and it's probably more like a multi-leg ultra marathon.” “That is something that I learned from running about how to stay in the mile that you're in, not, look all the way down at the results will start worrying about that because you just need to take it one mile at a time.” Angela learned that exercise is good while you're going through chemotherapy. Even just going on a walk. Angela co-founded a non-profit, Good Running, in 2016. Each month the group of runners selects a non-profit and donate $20 directly to the organization. They also gather raffle prizes and runners get a raffle ticket for every mile they run or walk. It's all about runners doing good, together. In this episode, we interview Sarah Canney, the Founder of Rise.Run.Retreat and a Bronze medalist in the 2020 World Snowshoe Championships. Sarah is an athlete, coach, writer and mom with a passion for running. After battling an eating disorder for nearly ten years in her teens and early 20's, Sarah found freedom and healing. Running proved a catalyst in her transformation as she learned to rewrite the negative narrative in her head and find a unique strength within herself. As Sarah became more involved in the running community she was inspired by the connections she had made to create Rise.Run.Retreat in 2015. Sarah's mission is to help women gain confidence, find strength and make authentic connections through running. As the host, she creates a place for women to be inspired and experience personal growth through running. Sarah is also a RRCA and USATF Running Coach and since starting running has become a competitive mountain runner and was a member of the 2018 US National Snowshoe Running Team, finishing 9th at the World Snowshoe Championships in 2019. In 2020 Sarah won the Bronze medal at the Snowshoe World Championships. You can find more from Sarah at sarahcanney.com. Questions we ask Sarah include: How did you initially get started in running and/or athletics? In addition to running, you are a world champion in snowshoeing! Tell us more about this sport and how it intertwines with running. You started Rise Run Retreat, an empowering women's running retreat with both virtual and in-person events. What initially led you to start Rise Run? You've spoken quite a bit about imposter syndrome, your experience with an eating disorder, and knowing your worth. Can you share more about your experiences with these topics, and what has helped you with each? COVID-19 has led to many changes, including cancelled races, retreats, and other events. How have you adapted your business, and what were some lessons learned along the way? For the moms (and future parents) out there listening, how do you strike a "balance" between having your own business and taking care of your children (work, play, and family)? What advice would you give to your younger (late teen, early twenties) self? What does being a Strong Runner Chick mean to you? Show NotesSarah Canney lives in New Hampshire with her husband and 3 kids. She is the founder and host of a women’s running retreat called Rise. Run. Retreat. What we talked about What the retreats entail and how creating the retreats stemmed from running a retreat with a women’s relay that left her feeling inspired, encouraged and gave her a confidence boostAfter the experience, she had the idea of wanting to do that again and take the magic of that weekend to recreate it for other women The retreat is a lot less about running and how fast and far you go, but rather how it fits in your life and teaches you that you are strong and helps you gain confidence Retreats are a 4-day experience for 15 people, in beautiful locations with delicious foodRetreat is for all levels - you don’t have to be a certain speed. She encourages everyone to think of themselves as athletes Their first child was a bit of a surprise It was 2008 and their economy had just crashed, her husband was unemployed and they were upside down on their mortgage, but it turned out to be perfect timing Always knew they wanted three kids - the transition from 1-2 was difficult, but 2-3 was okHaving a lot of prenatal anxiety Having a pre-teen and navigating the talks of why they’re feeling sadThe natural progression of starting the running retreats and how it came together between taking care of kidsIt’s been a compilation of little bits of time over the past 10 yearsHer family's decision to do homeschoolReally focus on your kids feeling encouraged and if they’re feeling encouraged they will feel curious and confidentBeing diagnosed with anorexia at 18, but dieting and restrictions had been a part of her life for years At the end of that treatment, her struggle with bulimia started. From the outside she looked better physically, but on the inside the disorder had just morphed into something elseStruggling with bulimia until she was 28 Finding out that she was pregnant with her daughter was really the catalyst for her to change Finding inspiration in entrepreneurial moms who are kicking butt in their business Modern Family episode mentioned in introFollow Sarah on her website, Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. Today I’m bringing you the amazing Sarah Canney, the founder of Rise.Run.Retreat and a member of the US Snowshoe Team.If you enjoyed my conversation with Krista Alderdice back in Episode 17, I think this one will speak to you as well. And not necessarily because Sarah is an avid and accomplished runner. Like Krista, Sarah’s running practice helped move her through a ton of healing and recovery. And while she is definitely focused on improving her speed and achieving new goals on the track and trails, Sarah’s main evangelizing is around mindset, intention and awareness. The Rise.Run.Retreat and Rise + Run Collective membership group aren’t all about PRs and mileage and training plans. Instead, they’re built around the idea that running, especially running in community, can be transformational. There are a few things that Sarah DIDN’T humble brag on in this episode that I think she should have:First, not only did she have a chance to go to Myoko, Japan in February as a member of the US Women’s Showshoe team, she was actually the bronze medalist in those world championships (just 4 seconds behind the silver medalist! She is also on the cusp of launching her Runpreneur Academy - a new membership group designed to help people interested in starting or growing a business in the running space. Sarah already shares a ton of resources and tools on her SarahCanney.com site, but through this membership Sarah will be sharing her ‘been there, done that’ entrepreneurial experience and mentorship directly. I’ve dropped a link to this new program here, and on our Guides Gone Wild website, so I hope all of you wanna-be entrepreneurs will head on over and check out Sarah’s Runpreneur Academy. And as for the rest of us, Sarah would probably want to ask, 'what are YOU going to do this week to set yourself up for success'? I hope you’ll let me know what tiny steps you’re taking, or habits you’re committing to, by dropping a comment on the Guides Gone Wild Facebook or Instagram page! You can follow Sarah on Instagram @Sarah.Canney, and dig into her other good stuff here:Runpreneur AcademyRise.Run.RetreatSarahCanney.comWorld Snowshoe Federation (snowshoe racing)Elliptigo bikesSnowshoes with customizable cleats

This weeks guest is Sarah Canney. Sarah is a running coach and the creator of the Rise Run Retreat and has been featured in Runner's World, Trail Runner and Women's Running to name a few publications. I recently virtually attended one of her retreats and it was an amazing experience. She shares so much insight on running on how running taught her to believe in herself and pursue her dreams and passions. Her message from day 1 is that "you belong here" and talks about what that means. She truly inspired me to get out there and run more! In the cast Sarah shares her struggle with an eating disorder and how running was a way to get away from the food chaos. She also shares some training tips and tells us all about her next virtual retreat. The retreat is for ALL levels whether you are just starting your journey or are a seasoned runner. I hope you love this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it! https://sarahcanney.com/ https://www.instagram.com/sarah.canney/
Sarah Canney (a.k.a RunFarGirl) talks with Coach Sarah of the Fitness Protection Program about the role of snowshoe racing, motherhood, and unconditional love in reclaiming her life from the eating disorder she struggled with for years. Founder and host of Rise.Run.Retreat. and author of the popular running blog, RunFarGirl, Sarah Canney has developed a loyal following thanks to her authentic voice and talent for storytelling. Running proved a catalyst in her transformation as she learned to rewrite the negative narrative in her head and find a unique strength within herself. As Sarah became more involved in the running community, she was inspired by the connections she had made to create Rise.Run.Retreat in 2015. Sarah is unapologetically herself, which translates to very candid conversations and meaningful connections with her audience. Sarah's mission is to help women gain confidence, find strength and make authentic connections through running. As the host, she creates a place for women to be inspired and experience personal growth through running. Sarah is also a RRCA and USATF Running Coach and since she began running in 2003 has become a competitive mountain runner and was a member of the 2018 US National Snowshoe Running Team, finish 9th at the World Snowshoe Championships in 2019. That's where her conversation with Coach Sarah of Fitness Protection begins: the way that snowshoe racing, with its uncertain terrain, highly variable weather conditions, and deep roots in the ethos of outdoor adventure helped Sarah move away from constantly monitoring her pace while running on roads. The Sarahs start with the beginnings of body awareness in Sarah Canney's life, the day she became conscious of the fact that the otherness she experienced was a direct result of her body being bigger than that of other kids. She talks about how that awareness led her to a desire to control her body size, and then to the realization that she could in fact control it through restriction. Sarah's high school and college years were marked by the ups and downs of disordered behaviors, seeking help, relapsing into disordered behaviors, and then finding ways to hide them more and more successfully. We're back! Season 2 of the Lane 9 Project kicks off with a topic we couldn't possibly ignore, the way Mary Cain shared her experiences within the Nike Oregon Project. In case you missed it, click the link below. Heather pops in to share our thoughts (which echo much of what has already been said), a few gentle reminders (e.g. Eating Disorders are NOT your fault), and how, unfortunately, more women in coaching (while important!) doesn't solve this problem or culture. Sarah Canney is a creator. A creator of things that bring love, light and empowerment. Like her three amazing children, her Rise Run Retreats and her new book "Renew: Roadmap to a Better Body Image." Sarah Canney is also a defeater; a defeater of things that hold us back. Namely bulimia and negative self-image. It took a long time for her to break free from the grip of eating disorders and negative body image. Now that she is in recovery, she openly shares her journey with the goal of helping others. Sarah has built up an impressive arsenal of tools to help her navigate the crap life throws at us. Today we dig into many of them. Her ultimate mission is to help other women gain confidence and find strength in their own lives. We have a deep, sometimes emotional, sometimes funny conversation about Sarah's path through her struggles into a place of true authenticity. Today we cover: Sarah's background: How her fear of screwing up started young and created a foundation for her future struggles Eating disorders: how anorexia turned into bulimia How running fit into the equation Getting pregnant: How true recovery started nine years later thanks to her daughter The importance of "The Pause" in all aspects of our lives Learning to accept feelings of fullness The freedom in your brain when it no longer has to constantly think about food Giving birth to a baby with a birth defect: helping him recover and heal Rise Run Retreats: How you can get involved Her new book: "Renew: Roadmap to a Better Body Image" We all have a mission. This is Sarah's: I want to help other women gain confidence and find strength." This week’s guest is Sally McRae. Sally is a pro trail runner, mother, wife, coach, speaker and world traveler. Sally uses her platform as a pro athlete to connect with people all across the world, often through sport. We sat down in Woodstock Vermont at Sarah Canney’s Rise Run Retreat, where Sally was a guest and speaker. This was a fun one. As you’ll hear in this interview, I’m a big fan of Sally’s, and not just because of her accomplishments on the trails. If you follow her on social media, you know that she’s one of the most positive people out there, always supporting others and helping people to see the best in themselves. We dug into that and talked about her history which has helped shape her into the person she is today, and about her fears and dreams. This one could have gone on for hours, and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Sally runs for Nike Trail, Spring Energy, Coros, O2 Health Lab, LiquidIV, Igloo, and InsideTracker. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/forthelongrun/support
Full Recovery from Eating Disorders Sarah Canney is a believer of full recoveries—recoveries that give you complete freedom. When she was diagnosed with anorexia and then later bulimia, her belief that she could be free from either gave her the strength to battle for nine challenging years. “I did not believe I was born for an eating-disorder life,” says Sarah, “That’s where the belief for complete recovery came out of.” She says that claiming recovery is part of the recovery process. Knowing that you are working toward that final step of declaring your full recovery is powerful. And once you do, that declaration gives you strength as well. Today Sarah leads running retreats for women while raising three kids and blogging about running, motherhood, and life challenges. Her mantra is to “Embrace the Hill.” Keep reading to see how she has done just that. Group Therapy Isn’t for Everyone Programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have done wonders for people struggling to overcome addictions. Building self-awareness, finding support, and developing communication skills can all help to overcome eating disorders. When we see someone else going through something we are, it helps us internalize and understand ourselves better. Receiving and giving support strengthens us. Be that as it may, everyone has a unique path. While the support of friends and family and the expertise of a professional therapist is crucial, finding the right professional and group of loved ones can take work. Do not give up if the first therapist doesn’t seem to work for you. Look for someone that has the same goals and beliefs as you. For Sarah, having a good therapist was crucial, but group therapy did not help. “When I was in group therapy, it was so easy to fall into the comparison trap” she says, “I felt like it dampened the flame of self-belief.” Seeing people continue to struggle after decades didn’t lift her spirits. If you or a loved one has an eating disorder, remember that each person is unique. While we can’t navigate this world alone, surrounding ourselves with the right people is just as important as having people there for us. Your Overarching Path Whether it’s a challenging eating disorder, a running career, or raising a family, occasionally stepping back to see the big picture can keep us moving forward. One great way to visualize your overall journey is to keep a journal. When you are feeling down you can look back a month or a year to see how far you’ve come. Write down more than just your day-to-day activities and record your feelings and thoughts of the day to create a more meaningful memory. Every journey to success has small failures. While we may only see a positively curated world on social media platforms, between every flawless photo there are dozens of imperfect moments. It’s great to focus on the positives, but also be willing to share real life experiences and know that others are going through similar things. Sarah’s Social Media Rules Sarah has two simple rules when it comes to following others on social media. First, follow joy and positivity. This doesn’t mean you should only follow those that put on airs of perfection. In fact, quite the opposite. Follow people that share real life events, whether easy or hard, in a positive light. Second, if Sarah begins to compare herself to others, she changes her social media habits. Sometimes this means unfollowing someone and other times it just means taking a break from social media. Social media fast can be extremely healthy, and you don’t need to announce it to the world to do it. Big Goals AND Family Life Overcoming an eating disorder, leading others, running competitively and raising three kids takes careful prioritization. “I like to think of it not so much as a balance but as an ebb and flow,” says Sarah. “Sometimes my running and personal goals are a higher priority and sometimes I’m just all in focused on my family.” She tells listeners to give yourself grace. Be flexible and don’t work on perfectly balancing everything you are doing, rather give things priority when they need it. What are your takeaways from this podcast? Will you take time to see the big picture in your journey or maybe try following more positivity on social media? Find something that applies to you and give it a shot. Give yourself grace and embrace the hill. Resources: Sarah’s Instagram Sarah’s Twitter Sarah’s Facebook Sarah’s Website Rise.Run.Retreat. Sarah Canney is a runner, a coach, a blogger and founder of the Rise Run Retreat, a women's running retreat focused on the idea that running, at its core, is a transformative act which leads to exponential growth. Which is exactly the effect running has had on Sarah. Sarah came into running later in life after being inspired by a Runner World magazine and a distant relative she was exposed to on a family vacation. That moment in time was enough to spark something inside of her which had Sarah adding "Run a Marathon" to her bucket list. Sarah is also a member of the US Snowshoe Running team and competed in the World Snowshoe Champs in Italy in December 2018. Which is kinda funny given Sarah used to hate winter and actively moved across the US to warmer climates to avoid it. That was before she discovered a way to turn something she disliked into something she loved. But Sarah's journey hasn't been without it's struggles. For 9 years Sarah battled anorexia then bulimia which had a impact on how she viewed herself, which Sarah shares in today's episode. Sarah also talks about the unfailing belief she has in herself and how that's lead to her pushing the boundaries of how far she can go. And she discussed her mental biggest challenge right now and how she's overcoming it. We dive into self-talk within the context of eating disorders and sports, and how your inside narrative is key to your success. Sarah shares how she changed her narrative from one that wasn't serving her to one that does. But also why negative thoughts and doubts aren't always a bad thing if channeled correctly. Today's interview is the tip of the iceberg when it come getting to know Sarah and her mental strength adventures. So sit back and enjoy today's show.
Last week, I had the pleasure of spending an hour talking to Sarah Canney. She's a Road Runners Club of America and USA Track and Field certified running coach in addition to being a competitive mountain runner and member of the 2018 US National Snowshoe Running Team. In fact, she recently placed 9th at the World Championships in Val di Non, Italy on January 5th. Now, I've never gone snowshoe running. I don't own any snowshoes. Frankly, I don't even like the cold. But after hearing Sarah speak more about the sport and how fun it can be, it's something I'm dying to try (and you can't get a better snowshoe running venue than Colorado's Front Range!) And while snowshoe running might be a lot of fun, it can also be an extraordinarily helpful method of cross-training: There's less impact running slower on snow (and less injury risk) It's incredibly specific to running (in fact, it is running) Because it's more difficult than running on the road, less time is needed for a great workout The more and more I think about this sport, the more that I think runners need to try it! In this episode, we talk everything snowshoe running: How it's very similar to cross country The gear and equipment required for success The training: how is it different from running? What you need to know before getting started How difficult it can be and how that relates to pace and effort We also discuss her running retreat Rise. Run. Retreat. for women and how she's making a big impact in the world of women's running.
