We talk a lot about confidence on this show—what it is, how to build it, and how to hold onto it in a world that's constantly trying to tear it down. And when it comes to raising confident girls? The most powerful thing we can do isn't lecture or list strategies—it's model it. Because confidence is contagious. Especially when it's real. In this episode, I'm joined by Cyndi Roy Gonzalez, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Greater Boston, an organization that's helping thousands of girls build confidence, community, and the kind of inner strength that lasts well beyond the finish line. Since 2010, they've served over 18,000 girls in Eastern Massachusetts—and they're just getting started. Together, we talk about what it actually takes to help young girls grow into confident women, why we need to challenge the limitations society places on them, and how adults can model the kind of authenticity and courage we hope to see in the next generation. Because confidence isn't just something we teach. It's something we live. In This Episode, We Cover: ✅ Why modeling confidence is the most impactful thing adults can do ✅ How Girls on the Run helps girls tap into their strengths and voice ✅ The role of joy, movement, and connection in developing self-trust ✅ Why confidence is more than achievement—it's about authenticity ✅ How to challenge societal messages that limit girls (and us) The world doesn't need more pretty wallflowers or shrinking violets—it needs authentic, confident humans who speak their truth, live with purpose, and run toward the life they want and the things that matter most—to THEM. Send us a textAlright, meet Tara Dower, AKA "Candy Mama” (a trail name born of sugar and love for her trail mates); while she's refined some of those habits… the sweet, sweet nickname still stands.Tara set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Appalachian Trail, powering through 2,189 miles in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. To put that in perspective, that's like running from Calgary to Toronto…while climbing Mt. Everest 16 times. (My feet hurt just thinking about it!)So Who's This Crazy MOFO? Tara is the definition of grit, making it on the news as an endurance phenom. This is not Tara's first stab at the Appalachian Trail, previously accomplishing a thru-hike over the course of 5 months in 2019. Her first attempt in 2017 ended early due to a massive panic attack just 8 days in. If that bit of perseverance isn't enough, Tara shifted her goals and intentions with completing this hike to enjoy the challenge, not just another box to tick!Pit Crew to the Rescue! Tara is a metaphorical race car, fueled by a pit crew swapping out shoes like tires. Along the way, Tara raised over $50,000 for Girls on the Run along the way, mentoring the next gen of fearless female athletes. Her feat is part of a new wave of women pushing limits in endurance running. Even a powerhouse like Tara doesn't celebrate till it's over, claiming that she knew she'd made it when she got close enough that “Even if I fall and break my leg, I'll crawl! ” (Talk about GRIT baby)Whether you're an endurance athlete or you've just got a tough goal, take a note from Candy Mama: set your ego aside, follow your curiosity, and remember—if you don't try, you'll never know. What's Inside:Endurance Runner, Tara Dower's FTK on the Appalachian Trail. The grit, discipline, and team support of an endurance athlete. How shifting goal setting can aid anxiety.Following your curiosity to accomplish even the seemingly impossible! Maybe you're an endurance athlete already in awe of Tara Dower. Or you might be thinking, Oh hell no, Oonagh, you won't catch me on a trail like that... Either way, you probably have a tough goal on the horizon. Take this episode as your permission to go for it and even permission to fail! What's that goal for you? Let me know on Insta!Mentioned In This Episode:Tara Treks - YouTube ⭐️

Girls on the Run is a national organization that empowers and strengthens the social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills for young girls in grades third through eighth. There's more than 175 chapters in the United States and seven in Pennsylvania. Jennifer West is the Executive Director of Girls on the Run Lancaster.  Each year, about 2,000 participants and 600 volunteer coaches come through the program. West brought the organization along with her friend Carrie Jonson to Lancaster in 20009. “At the time, we both had girls in third and fifth grade. Carrie Googled girls' self-esteem and running and thought, my gosh, this is something that Lancaster needs. This is something our girls could benefit from. Let's get it started. So, we went through the process of getting approved to be a council, which took about a year. And in the fall of 2009, we started with 25 girls. Then we grew to about 170 or 90, and then we grew to over 300. And it has just snowballed since. And it's been absolutely amazing how Lancaster and Lebanon have welcomed us.” The overall goal of this program is to build confidence, so they develop vital life skills. During a ten-week season, the girls meet twice a week for about a hour and a half after school. “We talk about healthy habits and teamwork and resilience and conflict resolution, how to be a good friend, because in third grade you're really figuring out what is it like to be a good friend? What qualities do I have that I can give to somebody else? And then what qualities am I looking for in a good friend? And we talk a lot about being unique and being individual because as girls get a little bit older, they tend to look at those around them and think, wow, I, I want to be like her. I want to look like her. I want to dress like her, whatever it is. And we say that you are uniquely you and you are just who you are supposed to be. And let's celebrate that and let's really figure out who that is.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Just this year, 2024, Sarah Pardus realized a goal that she'd been aiming toward for a decade: she ran the Boston Marathon. While her road to that finish line was full of twists and turns, it was also a full-circle moment. It both begins and ends with the terrific organization Girls on the Run (GOTR). Sarah's first organized run training came at a young age, through being a part of GOTR. Throughout high school and into college, Sarah was a highly competitive swimmer, and running helped her stay fit. And when an injury ultimately ended her swimming career part-way through college, Sarah returned to running. Intertwined in her athletic journey, Sarah developed an eating disorder. Over the years, as she mindfully surrounded herself with healthy role models and a strong support system, Sarah was able to establish a healthy relationship with her nutrition. As part of her adult running life, Sarah reignited her involvement with GOTR, now as a volunteer. For her own running goals, Sarah found great joy in running longer distances on the road and set her sights on qualifying to run the Boston Marathon. Sarah both qualified for Boston and ran to support GOTR, the organization that first got her into the sport. Hear the whole story of how it all came together in this episode. On episode 103 we welcome Yuki Chorney (00:13:04) to the On The Runs Podcast. Yuki, a passionate runner and costume enthusiast, shares her running journey and experiences in this episode. She started running races in 1996 and has since completed in 500 races, including marathons and ultra marathons. Yuki's love for running was influenced by her parents, who were avid runners themselves. She recalls her first big race, the Apple Fest half marathon, where her father planted the seed for her to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Yuki's dedication and training paid off, and she qualified for Boston in her first marathon. She shares her experiences of running races with her husband, Eric, and the challenges she faced along the way. Yuki shares her experiences running the Boston Marathon with her dad and her passion for creating elaborate costumes for races. She started running with her dad in the 1998 Boston Marathon and was inspired by the atmosphere and the challenge of the race. She took a break from marathons when she had children but eventually got back into running and started dressing up in costumes. Her costume design started with Girls on the Run, where she wanted to make running fun for the kids. She gradually started wearing costumes for other races as well, putting in a lot of time and effort to create elaborate and functional designs. Yuki's costumes often involve rhinestones and glitter, which can be time-consuming and messy to work with. She also spends a lot of time on makeup and face gems to complete her looks. Despite the challenges, Yuki's costumes have become a signature part of her running identity. The 1977 theme song for a film about Mohammed Ali, "The Greatest Love of All," was written and composed by Michael Masser, with lyrics by Linda Creed, and sung by George Benson. The beginning lyrics lay the perfect introduction to this week's Frankly Speaking radio show discussion, Were it Not for Those Who Care. "I believe that children are our future    Teach them well and let them lead the way        Show them all the beauty they possess inside                                                                     Give them a sense of pride to make it easier                                                                         Let the children's laughter remind us of how we used to be." This is the ideal life we would like all of our children to experience, However, The World Health Organization reports that an estimated 1 Billion children between the ages of 2-17 in the world have experienced physical, mental, and sexual abuse in the last year. What time is it on the clock for our children's safety, achievement, and happiness? How can we reach, teach, and love those children who are left out, left behind, and leftover that what happens to them is different than who they were created to be? How can we help them discover and walk in their worthiness? This week, we learned about a national non-profit[1] organization, that is doing just that. Girls on the Run (GOTR) designs programming that strengthens third to eighth-grade girls' social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills to navigate life experiences successfully. The program's intentional curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. The life skills curriculum is delivered by caring and competent coaches who are trained to teach lessons as intended. Ashleigh Conrad, GOTR Northern Virginia Program Engagement Manager, gets us excited about the secret sauce of the girls, their coaches, the annual 5K, and the proven positive impact that is changing life's clock on the happiness of the girls in the program. Hey Zachary, I can feel a change in the air…can you?  If you don't have your Halloween decorations up and a PSL in hand, it's time to get with the program. We're going to talk about a unique perspective today, running—yes, if you know me, you know I like to run with my kids, if I can keep up. We're going to be specifically talking about Girls on the Run, a program that at its heart empowers girls through running. Children today are exposed to long standing gender stereotypes, societal obstacles and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health. Girls on the Run helps girls recognize their potential and rise above limiting gender expectations. This program is really about so much more than running – it makes an impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity decline. There are so many benefits to this program, we thought we'd have Cate Willis on to tell you more. Learn more about Girls on the Run South Louisiana at their website:https://www.girlsontherunsola.org/Support the show

We need to slow down, and slowing down actually just means having some boundaries. –Amy MangueiraRecovering chaser of busy Amy Mangueira lost hearing in one ear before she slowed down enough to realize something was wrong. We talk about burnout, our need to slow down, and how to stop chasing busy (even if we want to be a great mom, make money, and follow our fitness goals.)You can still be driven and have boundaries. It means not letting clients run all over you, not letting them expect (or expecting yourself) to answer messages at all hours. You can go hard, but you also need space to slow down and rest or recover. The time doesn't have to even out, but the energy does.Sometimes we lose our identity and our confidence. We get so focused, so invested in some part of ourselves … mothering, our business … that we lose balance. We lose sight of our core values. We can have an epiphany about what's wrong or what's missing, but we need the actionable step. We talk through ways to make that change. We talk about: Taking time to assess what we really want and who we are nowGetting used to a slower pace and using joy as a metricLearning not to replace busy in one part of your life with busy in another part of your lifeMaking a list when you are stressed, seeing the patterns, and choosing an actionSetting boundaries to put yourself back in the driver's seat of your own lifeUsing delegation to be leaders to ourselvesBIORecently recognized by the NYC Journal as a Top Life Coach to watch out for in 2022, Amy Mangueira helps people all over the world live burnout-free by bringing clarity, direction, and positive habits into their lives by filling the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
