This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. With the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) currently scheduled to be operationalised in July and efforts under way to ensure that the Electricity Regulation Act (ERA) Amendment Bill is passed by the current Parliament, work is now advancing on the market code for the future multimarket architecture that will progressively replace the vertically integrated structure that has prevailed for over a century. Eskom transmission MD Segomoco Scheppers will lead the NTCSA once it begins trade after addressing the remaining Companies Act requirements, having already met the key conditions of board independence, licensing and lender consent. He reported that, barring any surprises, the wholly owned Eskom subsidiary would transition towards being the transmission system operator (TSO) envisaged in the amended ERA, which by South African standards had advanced relatively speedily through the Parliamentary process. The ERA is currently being consider by the National Council of Provinces, having been endorsed by the National Assembly, and, if approved, will then be sent to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has previously expressed an eagerness for the legislation to be promulgated as a matter of urgency. Scheppers admitted during a workshop on the draft market code that would govern the transition to a competitive industry, that he was continuously monitoring his emails for any sign of a legal challenge, following the recent issuance of creditor notices, which stipulated that any objection be lodged within 15 days of issuance and take the form of a legal challenge. However, he expressed cautious optimism that, absent any objections, the July timeframe could be met. This, after Eskom failed to meet the April 1 target date, which would have coincided with the start of the 2024/25 financial year. NEXT CHAPTER That said, he also stressed that the start of trade represented but one major milestone in a larger transformation effort, with the "next chapter" to begin once the ERA came into force and the NTCSA began integrating the TSO roles envisaged in the Act, which provides five years for such an evolution. Initially, the role of the NTCSA would be a "plug and play" version of the one performed hitherto by the transmission division. The amended ERA, however, also stipulates the following: The establishment of an independent TSO to manage the national grid, as well as system and market operations; The creation of a competitive electricity market, enabling multiple generators to compete on a level playing field; Ensure that regulation and tariffs are transparent, effective and clearly defined in scope; and Provide certainty to all market participants of their respective roles and responsibility. Speaking from the same platform as Scheppers, the Presidency's Saul Musker also highlighted that the ERA stipulated that a clear process be followed for the development by NTCSA of a market code, outlining qualifying criteria for power market participants, and for that code to be approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). The first draft of such a market code was published on April 19, following initial consultations pursued through the structure of the National Energy Crisis Committee (Necom), which was set up by Ramaphosa in July 2022 in response to the country's intensifying loadshedding crisis. Besides setting short- and medium-term goals to reduce the severity of, and eventually end, loadshedding, Necom was also instructed by Ramaphosa to "fundamentally transform the electricity sector to achieve long-term energy security". Musker said that besides the unbundling of Eskom in line with international trends and establishing the NTCSA, the key next steps related to developing a Nersa-approved market code, setting up a market operator within the NTCSA and imple...

The Little Mermaid is a literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1837 as part of a collection of fairy tales for children. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul. The original story has been a subject of multiple analyses by scholars such as Jacob Bøggild and Pernille Heegaard, as well as the folklorist Maria Tatar. These analyses cover various aspects of the story, from interpreting the themes to discussing why Andersen chose to write a tragic story with a happy ending. It has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre, anime, ballet, opera, and film. There is also a statue portraying the mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the story was written and first published. The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. Featuring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him. The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, earning praise for the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release, and $235 million in total lifetime gross worldwide. Along with the major success of both Disney's 1986 animated film The Great Mouse Detective and the 1988 Disney/Amblin live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after some films produced by Disney were struggling. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea"). We're covering the Disney seafaring animated classic(?) Moana, its themes of ancestry, forgiveness, and restorative justice, where it ranks among other classics when it comes to songs, sidekicks, and more, and discovering that we, too, are Moana. Moana (also known as Vaiana or Oceania in some markets) is a 2016 American computer-animated musical fantasy action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 56th Disney animated feature film, it was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, co-directed by Chris Williams and Don Hall, and produced by Osnat Shurer, from a screenplay written by Jared Bush, and a story by Clements, Musker, Williams, Hall, Pamela Ribon, and the writing team of Aaron and Jordan Kandell. The film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as the voice of Moana and also features the ensemble voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. It features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina, and an orchestral score also composed by Mancina. Set in ancient Polynesia, the film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a coastal village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. The plot is original, but takes inspiration from Polynesian myths.

A Herkules című rajzfilm a Disney reneszánszának fontos állomása volt: a hatalmas várakozásokkal övezett film minden eddiginél merészebben ötvözte a 2D-s, hagyományos animációs technikákat a 3D-s digitális megoldásokkal. A mozipénztáraknál azonban alulteljesített fiú mozinézőket is megcélzó hősmítosz: Rácz Viktóriával beszélgettünk a filmről, és megpróbáltuk megfejteni, mi lehetett az oka a sikertelenségének. Kicsoda Ron Musker és John Clements, akiknek a neve egybeforrt a Disney stúdió 90-es évekbeli reneszánszával? Miért készített a rajzfilmgyár egy kimondottan komikus, kevésbé komoly történetet a fajsúlyosabb alkotások (Az oroszlánkirály, Pocahontas, A Notre Dame-i toronyőr) után? Beszélünk arról is, milyen technikákat alkalmaztak a rendezők a film elkészítése során, amelyek kiemelték a Herkulest a kortársai közül. Alaposan végignézzük a szereplőgárdát: együgyü himbo lenne a főhős, vagy árnyaltabb figura ennél? Mi teszi a szerelmét, Megarát, komplexebb karakterré a szokásosnál? Hogyan lett a James Woods által alakított Hádész az egyik legegyedibb Disney-gonosztevő? Miért egyedi a Herkules hősmítosza? Episode SummaryUnlike its eponymous protagonist, Hercules (1997) is more “zero” than “hero.” Erin and Rachel discuss the film's rampant misogyny and obnoxious product placement. Compelling vocal performances and soaring musical numbers–the last of Alan Menken's contributions during the Disney Renaissance–can't rescue this box office disappointment from the River of Death. Much like Achilles, it just doesn't go the distance. Episode BibliographyCallaway, T. (2012, August 1). Susan Egan: Belle, Meg, Glamour and Goop - Part 2. The Mouse Castle. The Presidency's Operation Vulindlela (OV) has made markable process on accelerating implementation of priority structural reforms since its establishment in October 2020. Presidency project management office head Rudi Dicks addressed delegates during the Manufacturing Indaba, held in Sandton on June 21, highlighting that much of the constraints mentioned by the private sector within the manufacturing sector, including load-shedding and freight issues, are within the focus areas of OV. “Although the manufacturing sector led economic growth figures in the first quarter of the year, it was from a low base, with unreliable electricity supply and freight transport remaining binding constraints on industrial growth and manufacturing output,” Dicks acknowledged. OV aims to get strategic sectors working again and is a major driver of the Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan. It follows a government-wide approach, and does not encompass one single entity performing structural reforms, but rather departments working together to effect restructuring, continuously. Presidency private office director Saul Musker explained during the conference that the five desired outcomes of OV comprise stabilised electricity supply, sustainable water supply to meet demand, a visa regime that attracts skills and grows tourism, competitive and efficient freight transportation and increased quality of digital communications. To achieve the desired outcomes, OV has penned 26 specific interventions, of which a number have been completed. These are raising the licencing threshold for embedded generation projects, enabling municipalities to procure power from independent power producers, completing the spectrum action, corporatising Transnet National Ports Authority, finalising the White Paper on National Rail Policy, implementing an e-visa system in 14 countries and publishing a revised Critical Skills list. Musker pointed out that the process of reform is complex and often involves difficult policy and regulatory changes, as well as the establishment of new institutions, or implementing fundamental changes to existing institutions. Five of OV's structural reform interventions are experiencing challenges with implementation, including improving the efficiency of ports, addressing institutional inefficiencies in municipal water distribution and addressing institutional inefficiencies in municipal electricity distribution. This while two interventions are experiencing “critical challenges”, namely the implementation of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and improving Eskom's energy availability factor to more than 70%. Other reform interventions that are in progress and on track with envisioned timelines are procuring new energy generation capacity in terms of the Integrated Resource Plan 2019, the restructuring of Eskom, improved water-use licence approvals, establishing an independent economic regulator for water and a National Water Resource Infrastructure Agency (NWRIA) and implementation of third-party access to the freight rail network. Musker highlighted the key reforms to reach fruition in the remainder of the year are completing the analogue switch-off and enabling spectrum in the 700 MHz and 800 MHz frequencies to be used for mobile telecommunications; the amendment of the Electricity Regulation Act and the Electricity Pricing Policy to enable the emergence of a modern and competitive electricity market; enabling third-party access to the freight rail network, allowing 16 slots for private sector to operate the rail network for the very first time; issuing requests for proposals for private sector investment in container port terminals to enable upgrading and expansion of infrastructure; and establishing the NWRIA. The OV team within the Presidency monitor's progress on all interventions and engages, seeks consensus and determines what needs to be done and by whom, when required to do so. The team also offers...

Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel to the (problematically) imaginary land of Agrabah to discuss Aladdin (1992), debating whether this film can overcome its staggering orientalism to be the diamond in the rough we'd all like it to be. Highlights include Robin Williams, Howard Ashman, and Ottoman Empire fashion. Episode BibliographyAddison, E. (1993). Saving other women from other men: Disney's Aladdin. And I believe this will be something that has endless possiblities for it. Comments are Welcomed Like The Video VENMO: @Brian-Walmer-2 #TheMetalMen #DCComics #WarnerAnimationGroup #WarnerBros #WAG #TheHollywoodReporter From The HR: "Animation legends Ron Clements and John Musker, the acclaimed team that spent decades at Disney making movies such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog, are heading to DC. The duo have teamed up with Celeste Ballard, a writer who worked on Space Jam: A New Legacy, to tackle animated feature The Metal Men. Warner Animation Group is the home of the project, which is based on the longtime DC property. Clements and Musker are producing and have written the treatment for the film, which they are eyeing to direct. Craig Peck is executive producing. Allison Abbate, the former producer (The Iron Giant, The Corpse Bride) and now head of WAG, is shepherding the project for the studio. Based on DC Comics heroes created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru in 1962, the concept revolves around a brilliant scientist, William Magnus, and his creations: six highly advanced robots who have powers and personalities associated with their respective metals — gold, iron, lead, tin, mercury and platinum. The group had its own title in the 1960s and then made frequent appearances throughout the DC Universe in the ensuing decades. The stories have vacillated in tone from comedic to somber, with the group at times being on the run from government agents or even being robot assassins. The group sometimes incorporated a whole periodic table's worth of metal elements as new characters. The heroes made appearances in various animated series in the 1990s and 2000s, with Warners in the aughts trying to develop live-action takes that involved, at various points, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, writer and executive Geoff Johns, and Men in Black filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld. Details of the new take were not revealed, but the medium of animation and Ballard's work on Space Jam may point to a direction. Ballard — repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson — also worked on the TBS comedy Wrecked and MTV's Sweet Vicious, with both featuring whip-snap and irreverent humor. Clements and Musker's vast CVs have seen them act as writers, directors and producers on some of the biggest and most influential Disney movies of all time, some featuring now-iconic princesses and song numbers, including the back-to-back hit of 1989's Little Mermaid and 1992's Aladdin, movies that led to the great Disney comeback in the 1990s. They were also behind 1997's Hercules, 2002's Treasure Planet, 2009's The Princess and the Frog and 2016's Moana. The involvement of the longtime pros is a coup for WAG, which is still in the fledgling stage of its animation output. The Warners unit will be leaning more heavily on the DC brand as it grows and next up has DC League of Super Pets hitting theaters in May 2022." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bwrosas/support
Greenlit during the middle of a regime change as a low-budget excuse to keep the animators busy, The Great Mouse Detective turned out to be one of the best films of the Bronze Era. Ahoy, Matey! Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not a Bomb podcast. On this episode, the gang is once again discussing a sci-fi/animated film, this time in the form of space pirates - Treasure Planet. The film would mark the third time Disney adapted the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Treasure Island ,and is known as one of the biggest bombs in the mouse's history. With a colossal budget of $140,000,000, Treasure Planet is the most expensive hand-drawn animated film of all time. Treasure Planet was created by the powerhouse team of Musker and Clements, who created such films as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules. Of course, all of those films were major successes for Disney. However, when Treasure Planet was released, there was stiff competition from a boy wizard, a British spy, and Tim Allen in a fat suit. Treasure Planet is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brian Murray, Emma Thompson, David Hype Pierce, Michael Wincott, Laurie Metcalf, Martin Short, Roscoe Lee Browne, and Patrick McGoohan. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. Also, if you like what you hear, leave a review on Apple Podcast.Cast: Brad, Troy

We're back!! Farfisa Dave is an incredible guest and such a good sport; we are so excited about this one! Dave was the keyboard/piano player on the TVP's dark classic LP The Painted Word, as well as hired hand on basically all of the early Creation singles. Griffin and David are finally doing it! They are CONSIDERING THE COCONUT! In addition to the coconut they also have an in-depth conversation about Musker and Clements’ final (and best?) film together, 2016's Moana. A departure from their typical 2D animation style, and a shift from Disney’s typical Princess / Prince structure, their first fully CG film delves into a Polynesian mythology AND makes everyone cry. They are joined this week by Lenika Cruz (The Atlantic) and discuss heavy topics like parental relationships and leaving home, as well as topics on the lighter side such as; what is the best use of The Rock, and will we be over Lin Manuel Miranda again this coming year. Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" - this film follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. TriviaThe name of the ship, "R.L.S. Legacy", is a reference to the book's ("Treasure Island") author, Robert Louis Stevenson.B.E.N. sings a few bars from "Pirates of the Carribean", a pirate-themed attraction at the Disney's Magic Kingdom. As of 2011, this was Disney's biggest financial loss. Total cost: $180 million (including $40 million for advertising). Total worldwide gross: $101 million. Total loss: $79 million. This movie was pitched to Disney by John Musker and Ron Clements several times: (1) In 1985, during production on The Black Cauldron (1985), but they ended up assigned to direct The Great Mouse Detective (1986). (2) After directing The Little Mermaid (1989), but they ended up assigned to direct Aladdin (1992). (3) After directing Aladdin (1992), but the studio wanted them to direct Hercules (1997). Musker and Clements agreed to direct that movie only if they were allowed to make this movie right after it.The animators visited a Benihana restaurant to take notes for the scene where John Silver chops shrimp.Amelia, in the original design, was going to have tentacles for hair that would move and hold objects.Jim's clothes become lighter as this movie progresses, symbolizing his transformation from "bad boy" to "hero". Near the beginning, he wears a black t-shirt. During his adventure towards and on Treasure Planet, he wears a tan shirt. In the final scene, he wears a white military uniform.A planned sequel was cancelled due to this movie's failure at the box office, and when John Lasseter was appointed CEO of Walt Disney Animation Studios, his first task was to cancel all sequels and television shows. In the proposed treatment, Jim Hawkins and Kate, his love interest and classmate at the Royal Interstellar Academy, must team with Long John Silver to stop the villainous Ironbeard from freeing the inmates of Botany Bay Prison Asteroid. Willem Dafoe was set to voice Ironbeard. To enhance his "bad boy" reputation, the producers added a dark "mask" over Jim's eyes and gave him a black jacket, which he wears in most scenes for the first half of this movie. However, in the second half, he is no longer seen wearing the jacket and by the final scene, the "mask' is gone.On the planet in B.E.N.'s cave, Dr. Doppler says the phrase "Dangit Jim, I'm not a doctor. I mean I am, but it's a doctorate, it's not the same thing." This is a reference to Star Trek (1966), where Dr. Leonard H. Their legendary careers have included the animated classics The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog – and this year’s Oscar nominated Moana. Directors Ron Clements, John Musker and producer Osnat Shurer of Moana join us this week live in Stockholm to share their excitement of being nominated and journey they have taken to bring the story to the screen. Musker and Clements started their partnership early and their collective CV is like a map of our Disney movie childhood – starting with The Great Mouse Detective. When Disney merged with Pixar it ushered in a new era and Shurer shares with us how the culture shifted for both companies. Moana, or Vaiana, as it is named in many European countries, is already a huge box office success in the US for its incredible visuals and inspiring female protagonist who sets out on a mythical adventure across a series of islands in the South Pacific to find the shape shifting Demi-god Maui. Another reason the film is so popular? It’s wonderful soundtrack! One of it’s composers is Lin-Manuel Miranda started working with the film nearly three years ago before his rise to total stardom with Hamilton. Now he is Oscar nominated for ‘How Far I’ll Go’, which is one of the films hits. On this episode we hear how all three were involved in the research for the film, including their travels through the South Pacific, the challenges of creating their first CG feature film together and the excitement of being Oscar nominated!
Vicky, Nolan and Jill emerged from their podcast cave this week to watch the latest Disney offering in theatres. With the generally steadfast team of Musker and Clements (Treasure Planet aside) handling directing and current musical darling Lin-Manuel Miranda making his Disney debut as a composer, the hype was high for Disney's return to an animated South Pacific among our hosts. Listen to our spoiler-free first half of the episode to hear our thoughts, and keep listening for a more spoiler-laden discussion of MOANA's swole characters, stupid sidekicks, and sailing songs.
