Imagine regaining movement after years of immobility. Julie Graham, OT and therapy development specialist at MicroTransponder, discusses her extensive 20-year career in occupational therapy and her work with Vivistim, a device designed for chronic ischemic stroke survivors. Vivistim pairs vagus nerve stimulation with physical and occupational therapy to enhance neuroplasticity and regain motor functions in the affected upper extremity. Julie explains the role of the vagus nerve in rewiring the brain's connections and how Vivistim is different from e-stim (external electrical stimulation). While the FDA has only approved Vivistim for chronic ischemic survivors, there are multiple studies for all types of brain injury, so Julie hopes access will be expanded soon. She also shares real-life success stories of stroke survivors who have regained significant abilities. Support the showNew episodes drop every other Thursday everywhere you listen to podcasts.
"Wives, submit to your husbands..." Ladies, how do you feel about this command? If you're like us, it may throw you off, or even make you feel a little defiant. We approach life differently than men, but we're still equal—which is probably why we tend to bristle when we read or hear this verse in Ephesians 5. The problem is this that "submitting to your husband" is often misinterpreted as "obey your husband without question," both by our current society and not-so-well-meaning individuals past and present. In this podcast episode, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender share the context around this Bible verse and the real meaning of the word "submit." You'll also learn how to shed the negative connotation around the word with practical ways to honor the command in your own marriage—in a way that also honors you. Quote of the episode: “Submission is not like the obedience of a child. To our shame, some men think of their wives as a sort of first child who should obey them. That's not what the Bible teaches. A wife's submission is voluntary to a man who loves her. Rather than submit, the better word is she should respond to her husband.”—J. Kameron also serves on LIMRA's Retirement Plan Advisory Board and holds a BA in philosophy, politics, and economics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played football. In this episode, Eric, Julie Graham, and Kameron Jones discuss:Setting clear expectations and following a prudent process How live bids differ from blind bids Plan pricing philosophy Factors to consider in structuring a fee Key Takeaways:Engage all stakeholders early, setting clear expectations and timelines. Make decisions with employees' best interests in mind, follow a prudent process, document thoroughly, and avoid conflicts of interest.Conduct live bid RFPs every 3-5 years, sharing full plan details to maximize pricing leverage. Blind bids lack negotiation leverage, leading to less competitive pricing.Plan pricing should match the committee's fairness standards, considering plan size and demographics. Major record keepers sometimes offer blended fees based on account balances.Consider revenue sharing, flat fees, asset-based pricing, ERISA budgets, and DOL guidance for fair fee structures. Leverage economies of scale, negotiate competitive fees, and ensure investment quality through a thorough evaluation.“I think the best practice is to do live bids because when you compare against averages, you don't really have negotiation leverage. When you get live bids, your goal within gathering those is to maximize your negotiation leverage so you can go back to your current provider if you're happy with the services, and negotiate lower fees or enhanced services.” - Kameron JonesConnect with Julie Graham:Email: julie.graham@nfp.com Connect with Kameron Jones:Email: kameron.jones@nfp.com Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. Glynn Perkins asks the question: "Did the pandemic make us mean (and tired, burned out and lonely)?" COVID-19 took a toll on society far beyond its impact on physical health. The pandemic disrupted the global economy, widened all sorts of inequalities, interrupted childrens' education and forever changed how we work, play, live and interact with one another. Ann Rohmer is with Colin Furness (epidemiologist) to discuss as hospitals ease masking policies, where are we now with COVID 19? Ann Rohmer speaks with the Deputy Fire Chief about the steps that firefighters took last week in knocking down that massive blaze (homes under construction) and how they dealt with peripheral issues like keeping the nearby occupied houses (and people) safe. Kevin Frankish speaks with Visual Defence, a company that pivoted from security systems in 2019 to a product that allows Cities/Municipalities to better manage road maintenance. It is called City Rover. Tina Cortese is with the founder of Solify, a company that is making solar simple, smarter & affordable. In this episode, we are in conversation with the architect, writer, and Professor of Architecture at Yale, Keller Easterling. Her books include Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space (Verso, 2014); Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005); and her latest Medium Design: Knowing How to Work on the World, to which we dedicate special attention to in this episode.I think Easterling's project boils down to how architecture and design can actually intervene and/or contribute to the cultural change around social justice and ecological crises; through thinking about, and ‘knowing-how' to work the systems at play. So designing within interplay; rather than the total compliance and submission on behalf of the architectural profession is what she seeks. She redirects our attention to the spatial dimension of how things are arranged, be it politically, financially, or socially. Episode Notes & Linkshttp://kellereasterling.com/ In Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space, Keller Easterling reveals the nexus of emerging governmental and corporate forces buried within the concrete and fiber-optics of our modern habitat. https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/enduring-innocence http://kellereasterling.com/books/extrastatecraft-the-power-of-infrastructure-spaceIn Enduring Innocence, Keller Easterling tells the stories of outlaw "spatial products"—resorts, information technology campuses, retail chains, golf courses, ports, and other hybrid spaces that exist outside normal constituencies and jurisdictions—in difficult political situations around the world. https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/enduring-innocenceMedium Design by Keller Easterling looks not to new technologies for innovation but rather to sophisticated relationships between emergent and incumbent technologies.
