RIP Medical Debt was founded with the mission of seeking out, buying, and then abolishing unpaid and unpayable medical debt. Two million Americans this year will file for bankruptcy because of medical expenses. A financially toxic cocktail of higher insurance rates and co-pays, loopholes in coverage, escalating medical treatments and prescriptions costs, and incredibly expensive deductibles can submerge people into debt no matter what their financial condition. Through sophisticated data analytics, RIP analyzes its medical debt portfolios to pinpoint those who are most in need of relief and then negotiates to purchase this debt for a significantly reduced amount – rates typically made available only to large organizations in the debt buying industry. Once this debt is purchased – debtors are unburdened of this unpaid item. On this episode of Rally & Engage by CauseVox, we talk with Lauren Wiskerson. She is the Fundraising Specialist at Project AWARE, a growing movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet. For two decades Project AWARE’s mission was to educate divers about emerging ocean issues and encourage participation in underwater conservation activities. More than 1000 dive operators and countless dive volunteers committed to marine protection efforts worldwide. Today, Project AWARE is doing more. On World Oceans Day, June 8th 2011, Project AWARE flipped the switch on an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans. We support a movement for divers around the world to combine efforts--online and offline--for positive and long-lasting environmental change. During our conversation, we talk about how movement’s can grow out a small group’s desire to do something bigger than themselves, the challenge of identifying where to focus your time as a fundraiser, especially when your staff and resources are limited, and how our stories are what inspires others to take action. Nonprofit Board Management, Earned Income Fundraising, & Donor Engagement

On this episode we talk with Devin Race, about the unique challenges board run nonprofits face, how to use an earned income model to fundraise for your cause, and the importance of designing various donor engagement opportunities outside of just giving financially. Devin is the Board President and co-founder of the Texas Debate Collective. Devin debated for Westlake High School (Austin, TX). As a debater, he qualified twice to the Tournament of Champions and reached the semifinal round in the same year that he was champion and top speaker at the TFA State tournament. He placed 11th at NFL Nationals in 2009, and qualified to UIL 5A State as a sophomore, in 2007. He has coached for Stoneman Douglas High School, Marcus High School, and New Trier High School. His students have been in late outrounds of the Glenbrooks, St. Marks, Greenhill, Dowling Catholic, and the Tournament of Champions. Devin has also previously taught at the National Debate Forum (Boston, MA). The Texas Debate Collective (TDC) was created in 2009 to allow low-income students to access the highest levels of competitive debate. Expensive training camps are often where top debaters learn and practice their skills over the summer in preparation for the next season. But, students without significant financial resources are shut out from those opportunities. These financial barriers to participation are also unequally distributed; students of color are more likely than their white peers to be unable to participate in debate for financial reasons. TDC’s mission is to make debate available for everyone. In its first year, TDC had no budget and housed all students and staff in the homes of generous members of the debate community. Since then, TDC has become one of the top debate camps in the country for students at the highest levels of competition while also giving the majority of its students scholarships.
