Tune in to learn more about the case and find out how you can support the organizations making a difference. Get involved with Planned Parenthood. If you are interested in partnering with Planned Parenthood as pro bono counsel, please reach out to Cecilia DosSantos, cecilia.dossantos@ppfa.org. Eleanor (Ella) Spottswood is a senior staff attorney in the litigation department at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, where she advocates to protect and expand reproductive freedoms nationwide. She recently won a preliminary injunction that allowed abortion access to resume in Missouri for the first time since Dobbs. Prior to working for Planned Parenthood, Ms. Spottswood served as the Solicitor General for Vermont, focusing on appeals and constitutional litigation. She also served for six years as the Chair of the Vermont Judicial Nominating Board.Ms. Spottswood graduated with high honors from Harvard University and earned her law degree from New York University School of Law, where she served on the board of the Law Review. After law school, she clerked on the Vermont Supreme Court and for Judge Berle Schiller of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Anne Li is co-chair of the firm's Life Sciences and Patents groups. She is a first-chair trial lawyer in intellectual property who focuses on biotech, pharma, life sciences, and medical device industries. She has successfully represented clients using outside-the-box strategies, both in and out of the courtroom. Her goal is always to reach a good business resolution, but when that is not possible, she zealously uses litigation as a tool to get the best outcome for her clients. She represents clients whose groundbreaking products and services raise complex legal questions at the nexus of collaborators and competitors, including those times when one shifts to the other. She has successfully represented companies in bet-the-company litigations, often scoring key wins long before trial, resulting in favorable settlements. Companies rely on Anne to help them navigate the intersection of intellectual property and business because she provides in-house counsel with patent, unfair competition, and trade secret advice that is practical and actionable. She takes time to learn a client's business—from biotech startups to multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies and everything in between—so she can help them develop bespoke strategies that work for their unique situations. Clients also appreciate Anne's ability to match legal strategies with their risk tolerance and business objectives. Her approach is informed by her commitment to developing long-standing relationships with in-house counsel and her knowledge of the industry and related technologies. Furthering Anne's commitment to creating a strong and wide-reaching network across industries and the bar, Anne serves on the Executive Committee of the William C. Conner Inn of Court and is active in the NY Intellectual Property Law Association. She is also a member of Crowell's Pro Bono Committee.
Hey, friend. Hello, Change Makers. In the words of Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown—Hey, Black girl. We often say it takes a village, but let's be clear—villages don't build themselves. They're shaped, sustained, and often revived by Black mothers who know what it means to care, connect, and carry more than their share. Today's guest, Jetaun Woodley, didn't just recognize the gap—she built something from it. As a veteran communications strategist and Senior Director at Planned Parenthood, Jetaun has spent her career making sure messages that matter reach the right people. But it's her work outside the boardroom that's building legacy: creating H.U. Mommies, a thriving community of over 800 Hamptonian mothers who show up for one another, online and in real life. In this episode, we're unpacking how Black motherhood is often the foundation of community organizing, mutual care, and everyday advocacy. From navigating health care systems and education challenges to disaster relief and doula recommendations, these mothers are doing far more than sharing parenting tips—they're reshaping what support looks like. Jetaun joins Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown and me for a conversation that's both grounding and galvanizing. We talk about the power of peer support, the courage it takes to create a space when one doesn't exist, and what it looks like to protect and evolve a community you've built—especially when the work is personal. If you've ever questioned whether your care counts or whether creating something small could really matter, this conversation is your reminder: it already does. Listen now and be sure to grab the National Black Girl Month™ Toolkit for more ways to connect at nationalblackgirlmonth.com. To our Hampton fam—we see you. And if you're a mama looking for your people, you just might find them in H.U. Mommies. Connect with Jetaun Woodly on Instagram Jetaun Woodly is an award winning public relations and brand communications strategist with 20 years of experience. She has an unwavering passion and focus on working with individuals and companies to translate business goals and objectives into strategic communications plans and deliverables. Jetaun started her career as a public relations coordinator for Novartis Pharmaceuticals' philanthropy and community development division. She spent many years working in healthcare managing public relations for brands ranging from prescription drugs and FDA approvals, to eye care and over-the-counter products before moving to the nonprofit sector. Currently, Jetaun serves as Senior Director of Brand Strategy & Projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a reproductive health care nonprofit organization. Prior to joining PPFA, Jetaun served as Director of Network Marketing & Communications for National Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association for Children, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive. Following the birth of her son in 2015, Jetaun started HU Mommies Group - a support group for Hampton University alumnae. The goal of the group is to share advice, empower Black women, and provide a listening ear as Hamptonians embrace and embark on their motherhood journey. With more than 800 members, the group has planned a number of volunteer efforts across the country, vision board meetups, kid-friendly outings, tailgates at homecoming and a host of other activities. For example, when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, Jetaun coordinated a group donation to local organizations that support mothers and children. In 2019, the group collectively donated to Hampton University's marching band, and sent care packages to current students. In an effort to provide unique learning experiences for the children of alumnae during the nationwide shelter-in-place (COVID19), Jetaun created virtual learning classes on a variety of subjects. Jetaun was featured on Essence Magazine Online for her work with the group. In 2020, Jetaun was admitted into Hampton University's Forty Under 40 Alumni Recognition Society. Jetaun served as a volunteer for the I Have a Dream Foundation - a mentor program in partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church and St. Luke's Church in the heart of Atlanta. She is currently a board member of Atlanta Birth Center, a birth center dedicated to empowering families and providing compassionate, individualized birth experiences. A native of New Jersey, Jetaun received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications in 2004. While at Hampton, Jetaun was involved in Student Union Board and served as historian for the National Council of Negro Women. She also holds a Masters in Communication & Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Jetaun resides in Metro Atlanta with her husband, Dr. Shaun Woodly (HU '04), and their two children - Brayden and Brooklynn.
The first birth control clinic in El Paso, Texas, opened in 1937. Since then, Mexican-origin women living in the border cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez have confronted various interest groups determined to control their reproductive lives, including a heavily funded international population control campaign led by Planned Parenthood Federation of America as well as the Catholic Church and Mexican American activists. Uncovering nearly one hundred years of struggle, Lina-Maria Murillo reveals how Mexican-origin women on both sides of the border fought to reclaim autonomy and care for themselves and their communities. Faced with a family planning movement steeped in eugenic ideology, working-class Mexican-origin women strategically demanded additional health services and then formed their own clinics to provide care on their own terms. Along the way, they developed what Murillo calls reproductive care— quotidian acts of community solidarity—as activists organized for better housing, education, wages, as well as access to birth control, abortion, and more. In Fighting for Control: Power, Reproductive Care, and Race in the US-Mexico Borderlands (UNC Press, 2025), Murillo lays bare Mexican-origin women's long battle for human dignity and power in the borderlands as reproductive freedom in Texas once again hangs in the balance. The global gag rule, which prevents non-governmental organizations who receive U.S. global health funding from providing, counseling on, referring for, or advocating for abortion in their own country and using their own, private resources, has been reinstated by President Trump. Lori Adelman, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Global, and Caitlin Horrigan, Senior Director of Global Advocacy at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, sits down to talk with us about what the expanded global gag rule is, what it means for health practitioners and patients abroad, and how it can be repealed. When the global gag rule is in place, there is a deep disrupting in health service delivery, bolstering an anti-human rights agenda globally, undermining trust in medical providers, and weakening civil society allies. Communities have less access to centralized, essential care, which can force people to turn to unsafe methods of abortion. Thankfully, there are policy solutions. The Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights Act (Global HER Act), which was reintroduced this week, would take away presidential power to reinstate the global gag rule. The Midwest is a patchwork of different abortion laws—while some states like Michigan and Minnesota have protected access, others have completely banned care, like Indiana and Missouri. Garnet Henderson, Senior Multiplatform Reporter at Rewire News Group and host and producer of ACCESS: A Podcast About Abortion, sits down to talk with us about abortion access in the Midwest, including how it may be further impacted by recent funding changes to the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.People residing in or near states that have banned abortion often travel to Illinois for care (although some may also travel to states like Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas), which was the state with the single largest increase in its abortion rate after Dobbs due to out-of-state travelers. These states are having to absorb skyrocketing rates of traveling patients on top of in-state patients seeking care. Iowa's abortion restrictions and abysmal access rates to OB/GYN care and maternity care has resulted in maternity care deserts across large swaths of the state, and a shocking 61% of hospitals in rural areas having no labor and delivery service. Simultaneously, the Justice Fund, a financial assistance fund for low-income patients which is shared between PPFA and NAF, has been reduced with less than a month's notice from 50% coverage per patient to 30%. This leaves patients with an even more shrunken lifeline to access.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

What constitutes sexual education and the grade in which it's taught varies greatly in America, and 2024 is shaping up to set a record for legislative proposals mostly aimed at restricting the subject in schools. Sara Flowers, vice president of education at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, joins Ali Rogin to discuss the increasingly complicated nature of sex education. With the 2024 election on the horizon, Morgan DeBaun is sitting down with Alexis McGill Johnson, the current President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, for an eye-opening conversation about the fight for reproductive rights and freedom. Through the episode, Alexis shares insights into the strategic erosion of women's rights by the government, and she reveals the harsh reality facing doctors and patients since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Alexis also explains how countries can slide into authoritarianism, and how the current political landscape in the United States mirrors those trends. But it's not all about the grim potential for the future of the United States, as Morgan and Alexis discuss how individuals and social impact businesses can be a part of the change. They explore the responsibilities and challenges of small businesses when it comes to navigating healthcare policies, especially in light of restrictive and draconian rules. Alexis also shares the power of storytelling to foster empathy and gain support in the fight to protect reproductive rights. While this episode is far from light-hearted, it's an important one! Margaret Sanger, the controversial founder of the PPFA held the beliefs of Eugenics. A set of beliefs and practices that aim to improve the genetic quality of a human population also called scientific racism. The Eugenics movement later became associated with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. The Eugenics Movement in the United States was more about preserving the position of the dominant groups in the population. The people that found themselves to be the targets of the eugenics movement were those who were seen as unfit for society- the poor, the disabled, the mentally ill, and specific communities of color and a disproportionate number of those who fell victim to eugenicists' sterilization initiatives were women who were identified as African American, Asian American, or Native American. Now let's talk about Planned Parenthood...

Women's right to choose has been in question throughout history… getting to choose who and if you marry, what you wear, what's appropriate and not, whether or not you can work, what you can do for a living, the right to open your own bank account, to vote, to consent, and if and when you give birth. I am very aware I'm going to piss some people off, and this is too big, too important for me to worry about that. We're going to talk about the necessity of women's right to CHOOSE. I've invited Jacqueline AIyers, senior vice president of policy, organizing, and campaigns at Planned Parenthood Federation of America to join us. She leads the strategic direction of the federation's legislative affairs, global advocacy, and federal and state policy teams. Previously, she has served as legislative director for the National Urban League, was a legislative aide in the U.S. House of Representatives covering health, education, and judiciary issues, and is licensed to practice law in the state of Indiana. All that to say this: we're covering this topic with someone who can bring knowledge, experience, and real information to the table. CHOICE. If that's not the hill we're willing to die on, I don't know what is. And I don't care how you do it, I just care that you stand for it. Not just YOUR choices, or the choices you like, but the right for each woman, for each person to have agency and ownership of the one thing we should always have COMPLETE control over: our bodies. In which John Heilemann talks with Cecile Richards, co-chair of the Democratic super PAC American Bridge 21st Century, co-founder of the women's rights advocacy group Supermajority, and, from 2006 to 2018, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Heilemann and Richards discuss Roe v Wade's uncertain future in the wake of the recent Supreme Court arguments around restrictive abortion laws in Mississippi and Texas, and the effects that Roe's potential demise might have on women and politics in America; how Richards's mother, Ann, the former governor of Texas, propelled her towards a lifetime of activism; and how her broader agenda in favor of "women's equity" is faring in the Biden era. Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines as the midterm elections approach this evening. Plus, they're joined by Amjad Iraqi, editor at 972 Magazine, to give us the state of play of what happened with the Israeli elections. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Donald Trump's buildup to another presidential run, midterm early voter suppression attempts and the efforts to fight back, and early talk of potential Zelensky-Russia negotiations, before diving deeper into Tucker's recent expert coverage on why John Fetterman must die. Amjad Iraqi then joins as he gets right into assessing the recent election of perhaps both the furthest right and most stable government in Israeli history, before he steps back a few years to discuss the developments in Israeli politics that led us here, walking through the last decade of affiliation being defined around one's support of Netanyahu, despite rampant conservative beliefs even among the anti-Bibi coalition. After tackling the fermentation and growth of far-right Israeli politics – across the spectrum of Zionists –during the Bibi years, they parse through the fracturing of the Joint List alliance of the four Arab-majority parties and the role liberal Zionists played in the issue, as well as assessing the state of the labor and left parties in Israel. Jumping further back, they tackle the lasting reactionary impulses in the wake of the Second Intifada and the bolstered Islamophobia of the aughts and how it set the stage for Bibi's right to rise, and wrap up by exploring the central role of the Israeli judiciary in the current political moment. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Democratic funding of Don Bolduc, Matt Walsh appears on Joe Rogan to show off his expertise (it is neither in queer psychology nor counting), and JR Majewski challenges Tim Ryan and Nancy Pelosi. James from Fort Worth discusses the employment of teachers ON election day, Sam from Youngstown grapples with his pessimism regarding tonight, Hunter from Atlanta discusses felon disenfranchisement, and Mike and Daniel from NY and Austin expand on midterm discussions, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Nicole Hemmer, professor of History at Vanderbilt University, to discuss her recent book Partisans: The Conservative Revolutionaries Who Remade American Politics in the 1990's. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Twitter's Terms of Service strict Elon Musk-enforced parody laws, Biden's talks with Russia, the drying Colorado River, and early voting backlash heading into the midterms. Professor Hemmer then joins as she dives right into a quick overview of the arc of her book, beginning with the Reagan Era's birth of neoliberalism and working through the extreme neoconservative polarization in the '90s and 2000s, before she jumps back to the divide between Reagan's regime and the George H.W. Bush administration, both in terms of geopolitics – with the end of the Cold War – and on the domestic side – with the emergence of conservative political activists. Diving deeper into this reactionary revolution, Sam, Emma, and Nicole look to the shift from Reagan's oddly optimistic spin on conservatism to the party of Gingrich in the 1990s that behaved with the frenetic urgency of minoritarian rule, obstructing government in any way they could while their radicalism was bolstered by the rise of talk radio paranoia and a Democratic party that was chasing them to the right. After briefly tackling the rise of conservative talk radio and its ability to zero in on a particular brand of anger and agreement, Hemmer parses through this ‘90s reactionarianism as a response to a growing mainstream progressive movement that supported people of color and women in leadership roles and (occasionally) took sexual assault and bigotry seriously. The professor then looks to the George W. Bush regime as the end of the true Reagan republicanism, seeing it as a clear bipartisan failure by his departure from office, and leaving the party open for the new right groups (be they Tea Party or Alt-Right) to take hold. Wrapping up, they explore the future of the far-right attempts to normalize their own extremism, looking to right-wing legislatures already attempting to codify their right to the electoral votes. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss how Donald Trump is winning big big big for the Republican nomination for President in 2024, also touching on his DeSantis nickname soft launch before talking with Will from VA about the historical prevalence of Russian imperialism. They also parse through the absolute hilarity of Elon's first week behind the desk at Twit HQ, and Dave Rubin hosting proof-of-COVID Tina Forte ahead of her election against AOC. Tulsi Gabbard continues to be a hollow nationalist, and Chuck from Kentucky asks some questions about US support in Ukraine, plus, your calls and IMs! Photo: In the decades after World War II, the term "eugenics" took on a negative connotation and became increasingly unpopular within academic science. Many organizations and journals that had their origins in the eugenics movement began to distance themselves from the philosophy, as when Eugenics Quarterly became Social Biology in 1969. Margaret Higgins Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She is widely considered to have been a eugenicist and proponent of abortion. "We hold that children should be (1) Conceived in love; (2) Born of the mother's conscious desire; (3) And only begotten under conditions which render possible the heritage of health. Therefore we hold that every woman must possess the power and freedom to prevent conception except when these conditions can be satisfied." 3/4 The Orphans of Davenport: Eugenics, the Great Depression, and the War over Children's Intelligence, by Marilyn Brookwood @MarilynBrookwo1 @wwnorton. https://www.amazon.com/Orphans-Davenport-Depression-Childrens-Intelligence/dp/1631494686 The fascinating―and eerily timely―tale of the forgotten, Depression-era psychologists who launched the modern science of childhood development. “Doomed from birth” was how the psychologist Harold Skeels described two toddler girls at the Iowa Soldiers' Orphans' Home in Davenport, Iowa, in 1934. Their IQ scores, added together, totaled just 81. Following prevailing eugenic beliefs of the times, Skeels and his colleague Marie Skodak assumed that the girls had inherited their parents' low intelligence and were therefore unfit for adoption. The girls were sent to an institution for the “feebleminded” to be cared for by “moron” women. To Skeels and Skodak's astonishment, under the women's care, the children's IQ scores became normal. Now considered one of the most important scientific findings of the twentieth century, the discovery that environment shapes children's intelligence was also one of the most fiercely contested―and its origin story has never been told. In The Orphans of Davenport, the psychologist and esteemed historian Marilyn Brookwood chronicles how a band of young psychologists in 1930s Iowa shattered the nature-versus-nurture debate and overthrew long-accepted racist and classist views of childhood development
