In this special Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention month episode, host Dr. Christina Madison interviews Emma White, the founder and president of the nonprofit organization Life Is Worth It, who shares her struggles with mental health as a teenager, and how she used her experience to educate others and give back to her community. White is also the Statewide Youth Suicide Prevention Coordinator at Nevada's Department of Education and works under the Office of Suicide Prevention managing Project AWARE, a SAMHSA grant. Key Takeaways: Comprehensive Approach to Suicide Prevention: Emma White, founder of The Life Is Worth It Organization, emphasizes the importance of addressing all dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial—in suicide prevention. Her organization focuses on upstream prevention education, aiming to provide youth with tools and resources to manage their overall well-being to reduce the risk of suicide. Personal Journey and Advocacy: White shares her personal story of surviving a suicide attempt at 15 years of age, emphasizing the lack of mental health education and support that she experienced during her crisis. Her journey from a survivor to an advocate showcases the importance of therapy, community support, and the normalization of discussing mental health struggles. White's work with the state of Nevada and her professional speaking engagements aim to break the stigma and provide vital education on mental health. Breaking Stereotypes and Encouraging Vulnerability: Both White and Dr. Madison discuss the societal misconceptions about who can struggle with mental health issues, and they challenge stereotypes by sharing their experiences of being high-achieving individuals who have also faced mental health challenges. This conversation stresses the need for open discussions about mental health across all communities and the importance of seeking help without shame or stigma. Sending kids back to the classroom is a goal across the country for many reasons. Along with concerns about falling behind academically and parents’ need to have children in school, experts also are concerned about mental and behavioral health needs. Studies indicate children in need of such services are much more likely to receive them at school. Our guests include Craig Wethington with the Minnesota Department of Education. He discusses how his state has used collaborative improvement and innovation networks, or CoIINs, to improve the quality of school mental health services. He also talks about a community survey of students that indicates many kids were struggling with mental health issues even before the pandemic and how the legislature in his state worked to improve mental health programs. Another guest on the show is Rebecca Astorga with the Arizona Department of Education. She discusses programs and resources states can employ to bolster their mental health services and the role that Project AWARE, a federal grant program, has played in expanding the capacity of the state to address mental health issues among young people. We also talk with Noah Cruz, an NCSL policy researcher, who offers some background on the topic. In this episode we discuss Project Aware and the PADI Specialty, Marine Protected Areas, and another installment of Sea Hunt – It's Still Alive It is called Project Aware because it started in 1989 as a project with PADI to support ocean conservation. AWARE stands for Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education. Project Aware focused on 10 ways that divers can protect the underwater environment. These 10 ways have evolved into the 10 tips for divers to protect the ocean planet. In 1992 it officially became a separate entity called the Project Aware Foundation. Listen for more information on Project Aware and the PADI specialty or go to https://www.projectaware.org/ Marine Protected Areas are any area of the marine environment that has been reserved by federal, state, territorial, tribal or local laws or regulations to provide lasting protection for part or all of the natural and cultural resources therein. MPA came into being with Presidential executive order 13158 signed by President Clinton on May 26, 2000. MPA are managed by the Commerce Department under the direction of NOAA. The executive order supports another law called the National Marine Sanctuary Act first passed in 1972. You can read more about marine protected areas on the NOAA site at https://marineprotectedareas.noaa.gov/ A diver find a sunken Japanese submarine with a lethal nerve gas agent seeping out. That is what season 2 episode 15 of Sea Hunt is all about. "Nerve Gas" premiered on April 12, 1959. Mike and his dive buddy Stan – an LAPD police officer who is a judo expert are dispatched to help a diver who started freaking out after finding a submarine. While trying to revive the diver (Leonard Nimoy), Mike also becomes effected. Turns out the problem is nerve gas leaking from a sunken Japanese submarine. Mike and Stan have to seal up the leaking submarine – but not without problems. Listen to hear more about all the action in "Nerve Gas"

Rally & Engage - Online Fundraising & Marketing Insights For Nonprofits
On this episode of Rally & Engage by CauseVox, we talk with Lauren Wiskerson. She is the Fundraising Specialist at Project AWARE, a growing movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet. For two decades Project AWARE’s mission was to educate divers about emerging ocean issues and encourage participation in underwater conservation activities. More than 1000 dive operators and countless dive volunteers committed to marine protection efforts worldwide. Today, Project AWARE is doing more. On World Oceans Day, June 8th 2011, Project AWARE flipped the switch on an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans. We support a movement for divers around the world to combine efforts--online and offline--for positive and long-lasting environmental change. During our conversation, we talk about how movement’s can grow out a small group’s desire to do something bigger than themselves, the challenge of identifying where to focus your time as a fundraiser, especially when your staff and resources are limited, and how our stories are what inspires others to take action.
