So how do you figure out who and what your ideal client is? Well, that's what Mandy Pearce from Funding from Good and Mazarine Treyz from Wild Woman Fundraising share today! Why the Nonprofit World Has a Bias Against Women and How to Break the Bias It's true. Ask any woman who has worked in the nonprofit world if there is a bias against women and you will get head nods. ---------------------------------------- ✨
As part 2 of Collecting Courage, we invited several white leaders in the sector to talk about how to be real and active allies for anti-racism work. On the podcast today are Mazarine Treyz, Fundraising Author and Coach, Chris Conroy, Partner at the Wellspring Group, and Scott Russell, Chief Executive Director at the Alzheimer Society of Toronto. Mazarine, Chris and Scott’ tips on being active allies: Commit to lifelong learning and listening. Allyship and anti-racism work is not a quick fix - it’s a lifelong commitment. Look for resources to help yourself learn and talk to people around you. Stepping Back and Calling Out. When you’re invited to a panel or speaking engagement that includes only white people, do the work to ask questions, call out the organizers, and step back. Acts like participating in all-white panels is perpetuating the system at work that disproportionately supports white voices over other’s. Get comfortable with confronting your own complicity. We are all complicit one way or another in participating in a system that is racist. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable feeling of coming face to face your own complicity. Favourite Quotes from Today’s EpisodePost your favourite quote on social to share with us!“Highlight people of colour and their work. Pay them if you’re inviting them to speak. Ask the questions that people don't want to ask. Like, why is the sector not a safe or good space for a lot of people of colour?” - Mazarine“We have to be willing to go deeper and to look at things with critical eyes and questions. We have to be honest with ourselves that we don't see our bias and complicity very well and see it very clearly.” - Scott“Getting comfortable with getting uncomfortable is about getting comfortable with letting go of your own empowered worldview, which has come at the expense at the oppression of people with different world views and differing identities, which whiteness has itself framed and named and defined for itself.” - ChrisResources from this Episode The Good PartnershipCharityVillageConnect with MazarineConnect with ScottConnect with ChrisFeral Visions PodcastThe Mother of All Questions
You probably intuitively already know this: women make up 70% of the non-profit workforce, yet there are huge inequities in pay and leadership positions for women. And the pandemic has made this even worse. Why? In today's podcast, Richard and Jeff talk with Mazarine Treyz, a successful veteran fundraiser, consultant, author and speaker. They're joined by Karen Kendrick, Veritus Group's Director of Learning – and we'll get their perspectives on why we have this inequity, how it came to be, and what can be done to change it. We think you'll be inspired by these two leaders, and we hope it gives voice to help make changes in the non-profit sector to raise up more women to positions of leadership and equal pay.

Mazarine Treyz is the Founder and CEO of Wild Woman Fundraising, which supports both organizations and individuals to become more successful fundraisers for their work. Mazarine joins host Steve Boland to talk about the long-standing issue of turnover in fund development staff for charities. Some staff may leave a position early for unrelated reasons, but often the high churn in development staff is due to poor expectations, poor communication of those expectations, or poor support to grow tools and staff over time. Mazarine emphasizes her experience with building a pipeline, mentoring newer development staff (and board and others!), and knowing the value of making the right hire and building realistic goals to celebrate. Is having a realistic fundraising plan the number one indicator of success? “Yes!” says Mazarine Treyz, “It’s about making sure you have attainable goals that are not just pie-in-the-sky. “There is a pervasive form of contemporary violence to which the idealist most easily succumbs: activism and overwork. The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to violence. The frenzy of our activism neutralizes our work for peace. It destroys our own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of our own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.” ― Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander
