Homesteading is simple. If I had realized this a long time ago, I probably would have started a long time ago. Too often, we think we have to do all the things or we have to pass some kind of test to be able to call ourselves homesteaders. But in reality, there's no standard that determines whether someone is a real homesteader. If you have a mindset of increasing your self-reliance, I'd say you're a homesteader no matter what your methods are. We don't need to compete with each other on being the most hard-core or the most off-grid or the most waste-free. Competition won't get us anywhere. Love and support, however, will. Raising your own meat can be painful at first, but I know that our animals have a better life than they would have on a commercial farm. I KNOW that to be true, so I can take joy in nurturing our livestock and making sure our meat is humanely raised and processed. Visit the blog at www.hardyhousehomestead.wordpress.com | Giles and I were just talking about food storage. I know a lot of people buy the prepper food, like the long-term food storage. You know, the stuff they prepackage so that it will last 25 years in a bucket? Someone enlighten me if I'm missing something… but what do you do when the 25-year food storage runs out? It might be okay in a bucket for 25 years untouched, but once you open it up and start eating it, it's going to be gone and then what do you do? That's why I decided to start homesteading. I wanted a renewable food supply in the form of a flock of chickens and quail, ducks and rabbits, and a big garden. That's how people have lived for hundreds of years. It's only been in the last few decades that we've gotten away from that. But because we were busy having a baby this summer, I didn't do anywhere near the amount of gardening I would have. So we're coming up with a plan for what to stock up on to get us through the winter months if there's a problem getting food in stores. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
