Tina Muir is a former elite marathoner who is now the Founder and CEO of Running For Real, host of an award-winning podcast of the same name, author of multiple books, and environmental activist. As an elite athlete, she ran a personal best of 2:36 in the marathon and represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2016 World Half Marathon Championships where she placed 49th. After retiring from pro running, she started Running For Real, a business designed to use running as a vehicle for social change and encourage people to be vulnerable and courageous about the things that matter. The accompanying Running For Real Podcast, which was voted best fitness podcast at the sports podcast awards in 2021, creates space to have conversations about running, social justice, and the climate emergency. Alongside her work with Running For Real, she is also implementing a sustainability plan for the 2025 World Road Running Championships in San Diego and has worked with other major road race organizers and even the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs.   In this conversation from December 2023, Olivia sits down with Tina to discuss the many ways that individual runners and running event organizations can make meaningful changes to help preserve the environment. For the 7th installment of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia sat down with Deena Kastor, the NY Times bestselling author of Let Your Mind Run. Deena is an Olympic distance runner, coach, commentator, and author. Throughout her illustrious pro racing career, she has won 24 national championships and represented the United States on 19 national teams, including 3 Olympic teams. At the 2004 Games in Athens, she won a bronze medal in the marathon and then went on to win the 2005 Chicago and 2006 London major marathons. She has held American records in every distance from 5k to marathon and currently holds the master's American record in the marathon having run 2:27.47 in 2015. As an author, alongside co-writer Michelle Hamilton, her memoir, Let Your Mind Run won the American Society of Journalists and Authors' award for Outstanding Memoir/Autobiography book in 2019. In the fifth episode of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia Baker sits down with Abdi Abdirahman, author of the July 2022 book: Abdi's World. Abdi Abdirahman is a 5-time Olympian in the 10,000m and marathon. Born in Somalia, he fled the country along with his parents and 4 siblings in the midst of a civil war at just 13 years old. After spending several years in a refugee camp in Mombasa, Kenya, he immigrated to the United States through a program for Somali refugees. It wasn't until his freshman year at Pima Community College that he would set foot on his first track but it was immediately clear that he was very talented. In the fourth episode of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Ronnel Blackmon and Olivia Baker sit down with Alexi Pappas, author of the June 2022 book: Bravey. Alexi Pappas is an Olympic runner and award-winning actor and writer. In 2016, she raced at the Olympics in Rio at 10,000m, setting the still-standing Greek national record of 31:36. Since then, she has put her degree in English from Dartmouth and Masters from University of Oregon to good use co-creating two feature films: TRACKTOWN in 2016 which she also co-directed, and OLYMPIC DREAMS in 2019 in which she also starred. In the third episode of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Ronnel Blackmon and Olivia Baker sit down with Meb Keflezighi, author of the April 2022 book: 26 Marathons: What I learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career. Simply put, Meb is one of the greatest marathoners of all time. He is a 4-time Olympian competing at the Olympics in both the 10k and marathon throughout his career. He is also the first person to win both the Boston Marathon and New York Marathon in addition to having an Olympic marathon medal. A beacon of consistency, he ended his career with nine sub-2:10 marathons, the most of any American. Since retiring from professional marathoning in 2017, Meb has created the MEB Foundation through which he engages communities in promoting youth health, education, and fitness among other things.   In this episode, we spend time discussing the mental and physical grind of the marathon and how the same mindsets that pull one through a marathon can be applied to life. In the second episode of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Ronnel Blackmon and Olivia Baker sit down with Lopez Lomong to discuss his book Running For My Life: One Lost Boy's Journey From The Killing Fields Of Sudan To The Olympic Games. Lopez Lomong is currently a professional runner with Nike's Bowerman Track Club. He is a 6-time US Champion with wins in the 1500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m and a 2-time US Olympian (2008 and 2012) and opening ceremony flag bearer at the 2008 Olympics. However, his story is so much larger than his accomplishments on the track. At age 6, he was kidnapped from church and taken to a war camp which he escaped with the help of three boys from his village. He then spent 10 years in Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in the US via the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Program. He finished high school and then attended Norfolk State University and Northern Arizona University before turning pro to train for the 2008 Olympics. After the Olympics, he finished college at NAU and started a foundation, 4 South Sudan designed to provide people in South Sudan with access to clean water, education, better farming tools, and improved healthcare. This pod dives into Lopez's story in his own words as we walk through some of the most moving parts of his incredible story. Through it all he talks about what it took mentally, physically, and spiritually to get to where he is today, tells us how we can all learn from his story, and discusses how we can give back to ensure that other lost children get the same opportunities that he did.
